As someone who has always loved Little Women, this was right up my street. Some of the recipes were more accessible than others, but if you want to feel nostalgic for the Marches and you like spending time in the kitchen, you need this.
I think fans of Little Women, both the book and movie, will enjoy this cookbook. I wish more obscure recipes had been included or perhaps more about food and cooking then versus now?
An excellent cookbook, updated to work with today's ingredients and availability. Perfect for old and new fans of The Little Women.
This was a fabulous cookbook, beautiful illustrations and of course created around one of my favourite childhood books.
A wonderful gift for a literary loving cook.
I have such a big fan of Little Women I just had to check out this cookbook. A couple of years ago we toured Orchard House where Louisa May Alcott lived and now I can picture the family making some of these recipes in their family home. These comfort dishes will quickly become family favorites very soon. Imagine making some Roast Beef Tenderloin along with some plum pudding and Amy's lemonade for a family movie night. What a fun way to spend time with your family and enjoy a classic, just like the Marches.
A great tie in for those who enjoy cooking or who love the book series. Filled with lovely images, the book could be made as a coffee table book or dive into the easy to follow recipes chocked full of flavor, and factoids about the author and characters that you might not have known.
Has some charming antidotes and a few recipes that I would call keepers. The intro to each section has some good advice.
Cute and a good companion book if you are already a fan of Little Women. It's not reinventing the wheel, and you're not going to get historical accurate recipes since they are modernized and simplified. It reads young, but that is not a fault.
My Thoughts
If you love Little Women like I do, you will want this book regardless if you cook or not. This series of books is simply bookummylicious to say the least. While I am vegetarian and there are quite a few recipes which are not, there are more than enough recipes that I can try out and that makes this book a worthwhile addition to my bookshelf.
This book is parts cookbook, parts history lesson, and of course, parts a Little Women refresher. I love the authenticity of the recipes (with modern twists to make it easier for us readers in the 21st century), and the inclusion of quotes and anecdotes from Little Women as well as other related facts scattered like extra treats across the pages!
The recipes are organized into breakfast, family gatherings, dinners & suppers, and sweet treats, desserts & drinks; and include an amazing number of dishes you can use to take trips down Little Women memory lane, from buckwheat pancakes for breakfast to Hannah’s pounded potatoes for dinner and of course, Amy’s “pickled limes” playfully included as part of a sugar cookie recipe! While many recipes are from foods the Marches ate, others are from the time frame and included based on research done as well as the resources the March family would have had.
And last but not least, the photographs and illustrations included add to the list of reasons you must-have this book.
In Summary
A perfect gift for all Little Women fans (whether it is you or someone else you know)!! And if they already love cooking, even better (if they don’t, then this is a cool way to get started)
Disclaimer: Thank you to NetGalley, and the publishers for the eARC of the book; these are my honest opinions after reading this book.

Everyone loves the March family from the classic book, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. And anyone who is a foodie, most likely has wondered just what their favorite characters in the book would have eaten during both the good and bad times in the novel. The March family had their financial problems, and so most of the recipes in the Little Women Cookbook were easy on the budget, using foods that were most likely cheap during the later 1800s in New England, when Little Women was written (two volumes – one in 1868 and one in 1869). Wini Moranville, a noted food writer has captured the ambience of the time period while at the same time presenting easy, doable recipes that were most likely served by the Marches and their friends.
This cookbook is fun, since it has quotes from the original book, and readers can imagine their favorite characters living in that time and eating foods that were popular. Picnics were always something everyone loved, and the Roast Beef Picnic Sandwiches are delicious, as well as Amy’s Lemonade to go with them. Other dishes from the period, but that have been modernized, are Baked New England Cod (a new favorite), Apple Orchard Chicken, and Apple Slump. Because Hannah most likely immigrated from somewhere in the UK, some of the dishes like Hannah’s Cottage Pie and Fruit and Nut Trifle have English or British roots.
Although there aren’t pictures of every dish, there are mouthwatering photographs of many of the dishes featured in the book. And while there aren’t all that many recipes, the ones that are included are for dishes that most people will want to try and especially want to eat.
It’s no wonder that this delightful cookbook was a finalist by Good Reads for cookbook of the year in 2019. Owning the cookbook will inspire readers and cooks to go back and re-read the novel; it will be just as enjoyable, or maybe more so that reading it for the first time. Highly recommended.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
love this book for the recipes and the little women fan material! The photos are beautiful, all the recipes are exciting and accessible and overall it is well written and constructed.
I re-read Little Women, this time with my daughter, as we made some (not all) of the recipes in this book. Making the old-timey recipes helped connect her with the book, I think, and was tasty as well as fun!
I am a huge fan of Louisa May Alcott and of the era in which she wrote her classic books, including Little Women. I also own a Bed and Breakfast so I’m always on the hunt for great recipes – new and old. This cookbook was a dream come true. So often books refer to the food the characters are enjoying and, yet, in older classics it can difficult to find a corresponding recipe. With The Little Women Cookbook, we get to enjoy the flavors of that time but with modern era ingredients and, of course, cooking appliances.
I prepared multiple recipes from the book, from main dishes to desserts, and I haven’t found one yet that I didn’t love. Admittedly, this time of year my favorites included the Gingerbread and Apple Dumpling recipes, both of which were better than my own grandmother’s. If you like to cook/bake and adore cookbooks as much as I do, then this is a must-have addition to your kitchen. Bake up something wonderful and enjoy the new movie based on Alcott’s timeless classic, Little Women.
Thanks so much to the #QuartoGroup who keeps me on my toes in the kitchen and to #Netgalleyfor my copy of this gem.
If you're a fan of Little Woman, you'll really enjoy this adorable cookbook. Makes a great gift too!
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
I use to listen to the music mentioned in the books I read, but it never occurred to me I could also cook something I read about the way the characters would do it. That's why I found it so genious someone had that idea, especially when the book in question is "The Little Women", a classic everyone should read. Well done!
This was such a cute idea for a cookbook. I love new takes on old recipes. I can't wait to try some of these and impress the boyfriend.
This was a truly lovely cookbook that will take you back into the classic read Little Women. Filled with homey feeling recipes directly from the classic any true fan will be transported into the book and come out the other side excited about cooking some tasty food. It was a great celebration of Little Women and will have you picking it up again just so you can find the recipes mentioned throughout. The author did a.beauty job and even included fabulous illustrations, and quotes from the stories. It is a well rounded cookbook and the recipes are easy to make. I gave the Gingerbread cake a try and it turned out beautifully. I'll be making it again for the upcoming holiday season. I look forward to trying more recipes and to returning to the classic, it is definitely a.favored read!!!
An adorable book for lovers of Little Women. While some recipes are mentioned in the book, others are inspired by the time period. The illustrations are beautiful.
I found the illustrations and the notes interesting and loved the way the recipes tied into the book with the relevant part at the start of the recipes.
The information about food in the past was also a great addition.
The recipes were interesting and easy to follow with everyday ingredients.
A lovely book for foodie fans as well as Little Women fans.
A charming book. Part cookbook, part American history, this will be a delight for fans of the Little Women books, as well as anyone interested in historical recipes or mid-19th century American life. Organized roughly by meal type (breakfast, picnic, etc.), you can read cover to cover or just page through for something that catches your eye.
(Note: This is one of two Little Women cookbooks coming out this fall to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the novel's publication. Both, of course, are called The Little Women Cookbook. I haven't seen or reviewed the other, but this one seems like a good choice for fans or library collections.)
