I am a minor Little Women fan. While I don’t go out of my way to absorb everything Little Women , if it jumps in front of me, I do tend to read or watch it. So, obviously, when given the opportunity to read and review Wini Moranville’s The Little Women Cookbook I enthusiastically accepted.
Mind you, I didn’t really expect much more than a novelty, but The Little Women Cookbook proves to be more than that. It’s like taking a tour of 1800’s cooking, how things were accomplished, what ingredients were used, and what foods were eaten.
I always presumed that macaroni and cheese was a recent recipe. Nope. It’s included in this cookbook as one of the dishes that people would have enjoyed. Amazingly enough, in the original recipe, one would have been instructed to put a shovel (yep, you’ve read that right) into a hot fire to place it across the mac and cheese to brown the top!
Also, since cooks didn’t have convenient gelatin in a box, they had to do it from scratch with cow hooves. (Yep, if you thought the gelatin was vegetarian, it ain’t so.) Fortunately, the author refrains from providing that particular part of the blancmange recipe and substitutes unflavored gelatin.
One of the other interesting things (there are many!) that I learned was that Louisa May Alcott’s father was vegetarian and started a community called Fruitlands, which ultimately didn’t succeed. Knowing how people have reacted (and still do) to vegetarians in the States, I imagine that must have seemed like a crazy thing at the time!
I found the recipes to be interesting and some look yummy judging from the beautiful photographs. While I may review a lot of vegan and vegetarian cookbooks, this is not one of them. There are many meat and fish recipes incorporated as a normal household would have eaten during the time that Little Women take place.
The Little Women Cookbook would make a wonderful gift for the Little Women fan in your life…or maybe even yourself.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Great recipes! I loved Little Women growing up. I’m inspired to reread the book now! Perfect timing with the new movie coming out also.
I love this book. It is so lovely.
It was written with little anecdotes about the March Family, with illustrations and recipes.
I felt very sentimental reading it. I haven't tried the recipes yet but plan to.
I also plan to re-read Little Women again.
Moranville provides such a vast collection of recipes inspired by Louisa May Alcott's "The Little Women." Her recipes are straightforward and easy to follow, and the background tidbits are perfect. This cookbook will be an excellent accompaniment for anyone reading "The Little Women" for the first time.
I loved this book.
It's full of yummy recipes, references to the characters and historical time of Little Women.
I appreciated the style of writing and the pictures.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
A treasure trove of food and recipes from and suitable for Louisa May Alcott's Little woman.
A perfect gift for any fan of Little Women.or 19th century food historians.
5 Stars - I recommend if you enjoy Little Women and cooking. This would make an excellent gift.
A cookbook with recipes and tibits from the time period of Little Women. Moranville has spent time researching the foods mentioned in the book, and cookbooks written during the time period to share similar recipes to the ones Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy would have made and enjoyed. Some are updated versions for modern cooks, while others are fairly true to their 1800s recipes.
The cover drew me to this cookbook. The illustrations are absolutely darling, and made me want to dive back into the world of the March women. I love that the author of this book did a lot of research related to not only which dishes were mentioned in the book Little Women, but also into recipes from cookbooks written in that time period. While some of the recipes are updated for modern cooks and palates, some are also fairly true to their 1800s versions. I loved learning more about the world during the time of the book through tidbits of history and every day life that were shared in these pages. The excerpts from Little Women containing the particular dishes were also so sweet and brought a lot of nostalgia to the cookbook. I think that flipping through this lovely book will definitely inspire readers to have a boating party picnic or apple orchard picnic of their own. From recipes for apple turnovers, to chicken salads, roasted meats, and vegetable pot pies this book has many tempting recipes. I will definitely be picking up a copy of this for my own shelves after it publishes on 10/1.
Loved this cookbook full of recipe lovely illustrations character mentions.Perfect for any Little Women fans of which I know many & will be surprising them with this book.#netgalley#quartobooks.
I loved this so much, full of gorgeous illustrations, great recipes, quotes from the book, it’s such an attractive and adorable addition to the world of Little Women. I am going to have to buy in hardback now because it was so beautiful (kindle version to be used for recipes as to far too gorgeous to cause me to accidentally soil-which I would) An absolutely beautiful cookbook.
A magnificent book, richly and beautifully illustrated which encapsulates the atmosphere of the original reference book! I LOVED it and highly recommend it! I loved the recipes, the explanations, which are clear and the texts which go with them, the links with the book.
Thank you so much for sharing this book with me!
The Little Women Cookbook by Wini Moranville is delightful. If you are a fan of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, you must give this book a read. Ms. Moranville has done extensive research regarding what the March sisters ate during the famed story. When the book alluded to food, Ms. Moranville research the food of the period through heirloom recipes and included those recipes as well.
Many of the recipes seem to be taste tempting. There are a few that I would personally pass on and a few that are simple and basic that I was surprised that they were included. However that being said it is the recipes of Little Women and such all the recipes are included. There is a sum total of 50 recipes.
Delightful idea and well done. The photos and graphics are clear and colorful.
I would like to thank the Publisher, Author and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The perfect gift for any Little Women fan - throughout the book there are lots of character references which add a lovely touch. The book is full of recipes that are easy to prepare. I like that the recipes are beautifully set out and easy to follow. With recipes for breakfasts, lunches, dinners and desserts there is plenty of choices. I can't wait to try to recreate vanilla butter cookies Jo's Gingerbread.
Sehr liebevoll gestaltetes Buch, nicht nur für Fans der Little Women. Die Zitate und Anekdoten machen das Kochbuch zu einem echten Highlight.
Zum selbst erfreuen und verschenken.
This would make an amazing gift for any fan of the book. It’s a beautiful cookbook full of quotes and illustrations as well as a look at the history of some of the dishes that feature in the book. I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to try out some of these dishes but I’m still not going to be sold on blac-mange lol
I thought many of the recipes were clever. The “Vanilla Cookies with Mr. Bhaer’s Chocolate Drops.” were a fun nod to Mr. Bhaer bringing candy to Meg's children. That said, there wasn't a ton of references to food or cooking in the show and lot of recipes are just modernized versions of recipes of the era. I feel like the cookbook was a bit of a stretch, content-wise.
A collection of homely recipes inspired by Little Women, which was written in New England by Louisa May Alcott in 1868.
The author's aim is that we capture the spirit and joy of the food in Little Women. She picks up on clues in the book and refers to recipe books of the period to present modern recipes to either create similar dishes, or ones that she thinks the characters would have enjoyed. An example of the former is Jo's Much Improved Asparagus - with a greatly reduced cooking time. An example of the latter is Orchard Chicken, keying into Jo's love of apples and the Alcott's orchard.
Sections are:
Hannah's Breakfasts
Gatherings with Family and Friends
March Family Dinners and Suppers
Sweet Treats, Desserts, and Drinks
The recipes are well written, and the whole thing is rather fun. In fact the whole book has a certain charm.
The book is American of course but there are metric conversions. Some of the ingredients are American though, e.g. saltine crackers, and the author references corned beef with a spice pack, here in the UK we'd need brisket and the unspecified spices.
Importantly for some, there are good photos of some, though not all, of the finished dishes.
Period recipe books are referenced in the text though there's no bibliography.
What a delightful book! I loved the beautiful photographs throughout. I cannot wait to cook these recipes with my two daughters! This book made me want to sit down and first read Little Women to them for the very first time! Thank you for the memories that I know will endure because of these recipes!
I got hungry almost as soon as I opened this cookbook. The pictures are stunning! So are the descriptions. Every recipy has a connection to Little Women, a book that I simply love and have re-read several times. I not only got hungry, I now also want to read that book again. The recipies all have clear instructions, and seem to be easy to make. Okay, enough reading about food commenced, I now simply have to make not only the lemonade, but those other things as well!
This book is adorable. Each page is beautiful crafted. The recipes are more traditional and really follows the time era of Little Women. I really enjoy the simplicity of the recipes and the pictures. I can't wait to make some of these.
I collect cookbooks, especially bookish ones. I love Louisa Mae Alcott's book about the March family. It's been one of my favorite classics ever since I first read it as a child. Reading through the recipes and quotes in this cookbook make me want to re-read the novel! I added it to my TBR list! :)
This cookbook is filled with quotes from the book, many color photographs and wholesome recipes. I think Marmee would be proud of all the yummy food in its pages. She would gladly have served every one of these dishes to her girls, and Laurie, too! There are more than 50 dishes ranging from desserts and breakfasts to dinner and party fare. The ingredients are simple and the instructions are concise. A book lover does not have to be a gourmet cook to enjoy making any of these recipes! The dishes would be fun to make for a book club night, or just for a weeknight dinner.
The front cover art is attractive. It definitely caught my eye and made me want to peruse the recipes in this book. The page layout is easy to read. The photographs complement the recipes, rather than crowding the page. The font is easy to read. Definitely a nicely laid out cookbook! There is a full index to all recipes in the back of the book. The recipes are indexed by main ingredient, making things simple to find!
I am definitely getting a copy of this book for my cookbook shelf! My two favorite recipes are the Spice-Trade Deviled Eggs and Hannah's Cottage Pie. Can't wait to try making them, and just about every other dish in the book!
**I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book from Quarto Publishing via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**
Wonderful recipes with introductions into their historical roots and intersection with Louisa May Alcott and Little Women. This cookbook is a delight. Delicious food, adorable illustrations and beautiful photography abound. I am sure to purchase a copy for myself for Christmas.
As a long time fan of Little Women I was super excited to this cookbook! What a lovely, unique and creative idea. The book is full of rustic and traditional recipes. I love the historical information that is provided with each recipe. I learned so much! Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press for an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Little Woman Cookbook by Wini Moranville; Louisa May Alcott is an amazing little book, filled with wonderfully rustic and traditional recipes. A must for any fan.
Thank you to NetGalley for a Kindle ARC of The Little Women Cookbook.
I was stoked when my request was approved. I'm a big fan of Little Women, especially Jo, since I'm so much like her.
This cookbook was so much fun to read. There are beautiful illustrations, photos, quotes from the novel, and fascinating anecdotes about the Alcotts'. That was my favorite part. I love reading the factoids!
The author does a great job providing historical details and setting the time and place in which the Alcotts' lived and the traditional meals they would have eaten.
Also, as some readers noted, I didn't realize mac and cheese is not a modern recipe but old school.
Who knew?
Some of the recipes are odd, but that's expected considering the time period and the ingredients they had to work with but still interesting to learn about.
This is a great book for fans of Little Women or any one interested in recipes from this particular era.
This book was super cute. All the factoids and illustrations were just so dang cute. The recipes seemed to fall into two categories. They either looked genuinely tasty or like a novelty that I would never eat. Just learning about the history of the weirder ones made it worth them being in the book though. If you are a fan of vintage recipes or Little Women I definitely recommend it.
This is a completely charming cookbook! It ties in with perhaps every scene where food is mentioned. The illustrations are lovely, and the recipes are not too hard for a young reader to attempt. This would make a lovely gift for a young person, an Alcott fan, or even a teacher or homeschool parent to help visualize the world in which the books took place.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for a digital ARC!
The Little Women Cookbook by Wini Moranville is a delightful cookbook perfect for any reader who loves the book Little Women. Moranville has modernized many of the older recipes found in the book Little Women. She writes the food history and offers menu suggestions based on how people ate during the time Little Women was written. She also writes some of the recipes were inspired by events found in the book Little Women. A good example of this is how Amy loved pickled limes and shared them with her school friends. The author took a bit of artistic license by creating "Pickled Lime" Sugar Cookies.
You will find menu suggestions and explanations of how meal patterns have changed from the 1800s to how eat today. Moraniville explains how dinner was the main meal of the day while supper eaten in the evening had lighter fare.
Some of the recipes you'll find in her cookbook include:
"Indian Meal" Griddle Cakes
Hannah's Cottage Pie
Meg's Macaroni and Cheese
Creamed Ham on Toast
Chicken Salad with Grapes and Almonds
Classic Roast Beef Tenderloin
Apple Slump
Pink and White Ice Cream Dessert
Recommend.

This book is perfect for the Little Women lover in your life. My favorite thing about this cookbook is that with each recipe the author talks about a little historical tidbit that connects with the recipe. Bringing the historical facts and the yummy food together make for a fun time in the kitchen. It is also a great reminder that many of the foods we enjoy regularly at home and in restaurants have a long history in our country. Many of the recipes are those I have eaten variations of throughout my lifetime, but connecting them back to the Little Women time frame shows how a good recipe can last for generations.
This cookbook is utterly charming! It pays tribute to Louisa May Alcott with quotes and background, including a very informative introductory essay. Food plays an important part in the novel as readers of the book know and as the author of this cookbook knows as well. There are so many fpasssages about food as the Little Women grow. There are Amy who has issues with her limes, Meg who has trouble with her jam, breakfasts given to those in greater need and much more. Reference to all are made and give the reader the opportunity to enjoy memories of reading Little Women.
The recipes themselves are easy to follow. They are organized into four chapters:
-Hannah's Breakfasts
-Gatherings with Family and Friends
-March Family Dinners and Suppers and
-Sweet Treats, Desserts and Drinks
A few of the featured recipes include:
Buckwheat Pancakes, A better Omelet for Marmee and Milk Toast in the breakfast section.
Roast Beef Picnic Sandwiches, Jo's Much Improved Corned Beef and Spice Trade DEviled Eggs in the Gatherings section and of course more as you move through the additional chapters. The recipes are clearly delineated and look easy enough for those who are not kitchen stars.
The illustrations throughout are delightful. They definitely enhance the text. There are also some photos, including one of the Orchards, the Alcott home.
I thoroughly enjoyed this cookbook both for the recipes and for the joy of browsing through the book itself. Last year, I read Little Women for the second time. It was more substantive than I had recalled. Read it while your food is cooking and while you wait for the newest version of the movie to be released this December. Enjoy!
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a. beautifully presented book. I love that it is inspired by little women and that the recipes have been researched. I am looking forward to trying some of the dinner recipes and the trifle recipe sounds delicious. I would also think about buying a paper copy of this book. I love to flick backwards and forwards easily in cookery books. I also think that this book would make a great Christmas present.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
This has some really yummy looking recipes in it!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ebook copy in exchange for an honest review.
Little Women fans will love this cookbook. Wini Moranville presents passages from the book and creates similar recipes for you to enjoy. The authors describe recipes from the time period but update them a little bit for a modern audience. It's these bits of history that makes it truly unique. There are even menus for particular days such as picnics or tea events so you can create your own.
This is a cue, fun, and yummy book for any Little Women fan.
***Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***
Little Women is a classic and this was a fun way to give the audience a more in-depth look into that world. Wonderful-looking recipes that I will actually try (I'm not the best cook out there!) and a beautifully crafted book that brings together scenes and quotes from Little Women.
For one hundred and fifty years readers have identified with the March sisters. Louisa May Alcott drew from her family members and life, making Little Women a beloved story with relatable characters.
Set during the Civil War, with Mr. March at war far from home, the March sisters and their mother struggle to obtain their basic needs. Food insecurity impacts their home and the community. The novel begins with the preparation of a Christmas breakfast feast which the girls valiantly donate to an immigrant family. The women content themselves with a meal of bread and milk. The book ends with a meal as well, a picnic supper.
Wini Moranville, "writer, cookbook author, and lover of historic and heirloom recipes," was asked to write The Little Women Cook Book in conjunction with the 2019 Little Women movie.
With charming illustrations and quotations from the novel, it is a delight. I enjoyed revisiting the novel through the lens of communal meals. Well-chosen quotations from Little Women keep our attention on the inspiration source for the recipes.
Wini researched American cookbooks from the mid 19th c. Some foods from the novel, like the pickled limes traded between schoolgirls, would not appeal today, so Wini gives us "Pickled Lime" Sugar Cookies.
Milk-Toast was a simple meal of warm milk poured over buttered toasted bread, perhaps seasoned with salt or sugar and cinnamon. I recall my grandfather, born in 1905, enjoying it as a dessert from his country childhood.
From the passage, "The omelet was scorched, and the biscuits speckled with saleratus", Wini gives two recipes, omelets and Maple-Cornmeal Drop Biscuits, and a history of baking powder.
Other recipes from the past include:
"Meg was already covering the buckwheats..."~Buckwheat Pancakes
"It was too bad to laugh at the poor little jelly pots."~ Meg's Currant Jelly Sauce
"We'll have lettuce and make a salad."~ Jo's Lettuce Salad
"...and Amy made lemonade..."~Amy's Lemonade
Also appearing are Mr. Bhaer's Chocolate drops; Bonbons and mottoes, candies wrapped in papers printed with riddles and sayings; Jo's Gingerbread; the apple turnovers from the picnic; and Meg's Plum Pudding.
Where the novel is silent on specifics, Wini turns to recipes popular during the time period.
Newlywed Meg uses a popular cookbook, The Young Housekeeper's Friend. Indian meal--cornmeal--was popularly used in many dishes. Wini offers us Indian Meal Griddle Cakes, with a version with blueberries that caught my attention.
Meg also has Mrs. Corneliu's Receipt Book and Wini shares Meg's Macaroni and Cheese from that book. It is very like the recipe I have used all my life.
The recipes are tempting!
I was given access to a free ebook by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for a fair and unbiased review
I am so excited to be receiving this for review. I love Little Women. I remember reading it a couple of times when I was a little girl. This cookbook brightens my day and my moms.
Some of the recipes in this cookbook were, interesting. I think as a companion book for lovers of “Little Women” this is a great book. I enjoyed the tie ins with the book. I don’t see myself making many of these recipes. Some were too different for me.
It was beautifully illustrated. And healthy. A great cookbook for literature lovers.
So excited to get this in hand when it's published - as a long time fan of Little Women, I was curious how the cookbook would be done. I love the photos, and the history that is given in addition to the recipes. Will definitely be an excellent addition to a shelf, and looking forward to recommending it for a "What I'm Giving" table at our store!
Little Women is one of my favorite books of all time. I have loved it since I was a kid. I also love the movie version from the 90's and I am super excited about the upcoming movie adaptation that is coming out for Christmas this year. I love this beautiful cookbook. The gorgeous cover caught my eye first with all of the pretty colors and fun cartoon portraits of the sisters. I thought the recipes were wonderful and that the passages from the book to go along with each picture really added to the overall nostalgic feel of the book. I also love the fun illustrations in the cookbook. I have intentions of talking my book club into reading Little Women (and then going to see the new movie together) for our December meeting and having this excellent cookbook would be a great addition to a fun Little Women themed December. I can't wait!
This cookbook is perfect for fans of Louisa May Alcott's work. The connection to the book, Little Women, is well done throughout the cookbook. The quotes and texts relate well to the recipes and make it a delightful read. I think this would make a great library program -- celebrate Louisa May Alcott and make recipes from this book!
Such a lovely and cute book!
Taking inspiration from the family scenes of ‘Little Women’,this little book contains creative yet easy-to-follow recipes, quotations from the novel and amazing coloured illustrations. You could find inspiration for breakfast, lunch, party ideas and dinner. It is definitely not your average cookbook as recipes have a little ‘twist’ as they all have a link to the ‘Little Women’s life.
As a fan of Louisa May Alcott, this cookbook made me so happy and I would definitely recommend it as a cute gift for a friend.
Thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange of an honest review.
A fun and fantastic cookbook for Little Women fans! From delicious recipes that apply to the book, to facts about Louisa May Alcott, to snippets from the book...this cookbook has a little something to appeal to every reader! It’s beautifully put together with spectacular illustrations and quotes. A fun and nostalgic cookbook that I thoroughly enjoyed!
Ohhhh this is such a charming little book. I think anyone who enjoyed the adventures of the March sisters would love to have this book even if they never cooked one recipe. If you want to try the recipes, most of them look very simple to follow, even by a young teen.
Every recipe has a section that tells how in the story of The Little Women it is referenced, and gives some information about where the recipe originated. I love that the dishes are a bit unusual but not weird, so that most young readers would not be afraid to try one. In fact, their interest in the story might push them to try something new on their plates. A cheese, butter & celery sandwich might be turned down if simply offered, but a young Louisa May Alcott reader would likely love to try it.
The dinners sound delicious, but the winning section is probably the desserts. Any young reader would love to throw a tea party or luncheon, and there are the most darling little sweets to try.
Overall the book deserves 5 stars for accomplishing what it attempted. This is a must have for any Alcott lover.
Many thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. I adore the book and think it would make an excellent gift for a book lover.
Absolutely adorable. I loved the book quotes relating to the recipes, the backstories and the cute illustrations. The recipes look simple and delicious. So excited to cook them up!
This is a cookbook for Little Women fans. The author provided 50 recipes based on foods mentioned in the book and using cookbooks from the 1800s. She's updated the recipes so you use modern equipment and for modern tastes, but she included information about how the foods were made at the time along with quotes from the book. The recipes usually were "from scratch" but sometimes used store-bought puff pastry dough and such. These recipes do not cater to gluten or allergy concerns (which I didn't expect) and weren't what I'd call "healthy," but that's not really the point of this cookbook.
The book contained 7 breakfast recipes, 10 gathering/picnic recipes (sandwiches, salads, etc.), 13 dinner and supper recipes, 18 treat and desert recipes, and 2 drink recipes. Along with some interesting historical cooking and meal information. There were some full-color pictures of the recipes, but not a picture of every recipe. The instructions seemed clear and simple (not complicated or a huge number of steps).

This is a must have for all Louisa May Alcott fans! It is vibrantly illustrated and organized into four chapters: breakfast, family gatherings, dinner and desserts. The author also includes some history about Louisa May Alcott and the author's fascination with historic and heirloom recipes.
Food is the kind of love you can see.
It begins with a delightful travel back to the March family and the lessons of generosity learned. Episodes from the story are revisited as they demonstrate how certain foods played an intricate role in their daily lives. The author has done extensive research and where no specific dish was identified she found recipes around 1850-1880 taking into account the March family resources and food popular at that time.
A popular breakfast of Milk-Toast is a reminder of simple times. Of course, the meals changed with the seasons and available crops. It would not be uncommon for one to serve a breakfast of cornbread, fried liver, boiled eggs and fried potatoes. They tended to eat a heartier and more varied breakfast than generally served in America today.
Gatherings with friends and family were not complete without favorite meals over picnics or Sunday roast. Evening suppers were quite light since their hearty meal was at breakfast. Sandwiches and salads were quite popular with rather peculiar ingredients amongst the upper-class including pigeon pie, duck, tongue, blanc-mange, cheese and biscuits. Back in the day, celery was considered a delicacy and displayed proudly in a vessel on the dinner table. An interesting recipe in this book is called Cheese, Butter and Celery Sandwiches. Again, what seems like a humble meal today was deemed a special treat as celery was expensive. Interesting since living in New England at the time, lobsters were plentiful! Salads would often display their flavor a through the greens available than the dressings applied. In addition to milder lettuce, they often had mustard greens, sorrel and watercress.
Family dinners consisted of inexpensive readily available ingredients such as fish and lobster, potatoes, biscuits and pot pies. Some interesting recipes are Creamed Ham on Toast, Hannah's Cottage Pie, Maple Cornmeal Drop Biscuits and Garden Pot Pie.
Sweet treats and desserts are always a favorite. As today, cookies of all sorts used everyday pantry essentials such as flour, sugar, eggs, milk and fruit. You will find a variety of dishes which have been adapted for today's convenience.
I enjoyed this cookbook for its recipes as well as its trip down memory lane.
With over 50 recipes, every food event in Louisa Mae Alcott’s Little Women is replicated using modern ingredients and cooking methods in the Little Women Cookbook.
From simple lemonade and hot chocolate to fruit trifles and Jo’s corned beef, the book has recipes for all skill levels. Many of the recipes are vegetarian like the garden pot pie. There are breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack recipes but the emphasis is on desserts. Or that just may be me . Many are little remembered now like apple slump and jellyroll cake.
I enjoyed the Little Women Cookbook. It was fun to see recipes that I had read about but had no idea how they were made. This a fun gift for the reader in your life. The only downside is there no nutritional information provided. 4 stars!
Thanks to Harvard Common Press and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. The recipes were simple, down home and comforting. I will definitely be making some of these, maybe while I drink some tea and read a book in my chair. I really enjoyed the excerpts and articles on what the food was like when little women was set in.
#littlewomencookbook #Netgalley
The book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is a beloved favorite to many. With the movie coming out in December of this year, it is perfect timing for a Little Women-themed cookbook. The Little Women Cookbook is full of recipes either eaten by the March family in the book, or themed to the time frame. It includes pictures, adorable drawings, and passages from the book to describe where in the story the item would have been eaten. If you've always wanted to try the omelette made for their mother, or the once fashionable buckwheat cakes, you are in luck. As with most cookbooks, the book is divided into sections like main courses and desserts.
If you're a big fan of Little Women or curious about cooking around the time of the American Civil War, you'll be delighted by this new book.
The Little Women Cookbook by Winni Moranville is available from Harvard Quarto Press October 1st, 2019.
The March sister - Meg, Jo, Beth and even little Amy - have long been my favorite sisters. I jumped at the chance to view/read this cookbook - celebrating the sisters and their creator, Louisa May Alcott.
Recipes are cute and of the time - however, the draw of this book is the beautiful illustrations that are included.
This is a lovely book that will be a beautiful addition to any March sisters fan.
This is a short and sweet cookbook that references Louisa May Alcott's classic book beautifully, complete with small blurbs and illustrations. The photos are also well staged, I just wish that there are more of them! It is obvious that the author is a fan and as a fellow fan I was completely taken in. For dietary reasons a lot of these things I can't make as is but I certainly plan to adapt some for my own use. I am certain as well that I will turn some out for the benefit of others, like the fruit and nut trifle or my personal favourite, gingerbread.
I'm a collector of cookbooks. I have so many that any new ones have to unique and full of recipes that I'm willing try. This is not just a cookbook, it's a conversation starter for many of my friends and me. We all grew up with Little Women and have read many, many books based on or featuring the characters from this classic. The recipes definitely have the feel of the family's table and everyone of us loved the results. So, the book is great, the recipes are great and the Little Women feel is there. What does that add up to? 5 stars!
An interesting read as well as containing a good range of recipes inspired by or taken from Little Women. The author updates the recipes to reflect modern ingredients and equipment but provides plenty of background and fascinating historical details.
What a wonderfully superb cookbook. It encompasses not only a classic story but also history lessons along with cooking lessons thrown in! There is nothing like enjoying food when you understand the past. This would make a marvelous addition to any young person’s home library but also something a parent can use as a family activity. Besides which it would also work as a great after school library program.
I received an advanced reader copy from NetGalley in exchange for my volunteer review.
This was such a fun and interesting cookbook. It's almost like a mini-tour of 1800's cooking, with beautiful photographs to illustrate. It also contains random trivia, which made it more interesting.
If one knows of a Little Woman fan, this could work great as a gift.
It’s been many years since I read Little Women, but seeing this cookbook brought back the warm feelings that I had for the March family. While I don’t remember the foods mentioned, I can see that the recipes in this cookbook were surely similar to ones they might have enjoyed.
The recipes are a nice mix of the kinds of foods I would think of as mostly comfort meals. There aren’t any strange ingredients, so I think everyone would find something to enjoy; although I did see a recipe with sriracha sauce , which might have been a tad difficult to come across when this book was written.
Here are a few of the ones that can be found: Buckwheat pancakes; Amy’s “Christmas Day” muffins; A better omelet for Marmee; Roast beef picnic sandwiches; Classic roast beef tenderloin; Apple orchard chicken; New England fish chowder; Garden pot pie; Hannah’s cottage pie; Bonbons and mottoes; and Dessert Crepes.
There are also quotes from the book and additional information scattered throughout. Overall, this is a very nice book for Little Women fans.
This is a cute book and a yummy one too. Specially designed and delicately curated for lovers of the book. With each recipe, one can find excerpts from the book and it's a pleasant way to live the experience of eating with the sisters
The foreword starts all with all the occasions of food in the Little Women Cookbook.
saleratus then and baking soda now.
The recipes have the context from the book of whats happening. Not all of the attempts in the original book are successful, which makes it poetic justice that this cookbook fixes them with foolproof recipes.
There's a bill of fare i.e menu for different meals like Picnic and Luncheon party.
Mottoes from the march family. I quite agree with Jo's "Something more than energy and goodwill is necessary to make a cook".
This charming little cookbook is full of recipes that one could imagine Marmee or Hanna preparing for Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth .For example, there’s a recipe for milk toast with an excerpt about how the March girls gave away their Christmas breakfast and returned home to bread and milk. The recipes are easy to make and really yummy. Amy’s Frothy French Drinking Chocolate is a particular favorite. I highly recommend getting in the kitchen with one of your favorite little women (or men) and trying these great recipes out.
Thank you Netgalley for a free e-copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is a great book for any fan of the beloved classic! I love how the recipes incorporate the characters' tastes and how easy they were to prepare. This is a great book for mother/daughter bonding!
This is a wonderful cookbook for fans of Little Women. The author details her research and modification of recipes to adapt them for modern cooking techniques. I love old cook books with old-time recipes, and I really enjoy those older recipes with the needed changes built in.
These recipes do call for things like purchased cookie mixes, cake mixes, frosting, puff pastry, etc. (They are modernized to a degree that not everything is completely made from scratch). I personally like that because I don't always have time to bake all day. For others they may be disappointed in the modernized time savers.
There are some from-scratch recipes, such as a wonderful lemonade. There are color photos of many of the dishes and lots of fun quotes from the books which are a nice added touch.
Note: To anyone on special diets-- these recipes are heavy on wheat and meat so if you have dietary restrictions these recipes would need to be modified to fit your needs (which would be typical for many cookbooks not specific to certain diets).
This is a great cookbook for fans of the Little Women books. This is not just a cookbook, filled with quotes, and references to Little women. Many of the recipes are delicious. The pictures are well taken and make the food look amazing. I plan to buy several copies as gifts. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
This is a sweet little cookbook for fans of Little Women. The author explains at the start that she researched recipes of the time but adapted most of them for modern times. I collect historic cookbooks and love cooking old-time recipes, so was hoping for more authenticity. These recipes tend to call for things like purchased cookie mixes, cake mixes, frosting, puff pastry, etc. while I prefer to cook from scratch and would prefer more of that sort. There are some from-scratch recipes, such as for lemonade (although she offers a fancier version than they probably made, with orange and cloves and such added). There are color photos of many of the dishes and lots of sweet quotes from the books. She also gives some information about how things would have been made back then (with a kind of "aren't you glad you don't have to eat that gross stuff" tone) and lots of interesting tidbits.
Note to folks on special diets-- these recipes are heavy on wheat and meat. There is a vegetarian pot pie recipe that mentions Alcott's father was a vegan but it includes dairy. Folks who are vegetarian or gluten free may not find many recipes that will work for their needs. (Vegetarians who want to try authentic historic recipes should look for Henrietta Dwight's 1898 cookbook "The Golden Age Cook Book," which is vegetarian and praises the benefits of a "bloodless diet." You can download digital copies free from many sources and it is a very interesting historic read.)
This will be a great book for fans of the books, not necessarily for those who want to cook authentic dishes from the time.
First, lets talk about that cover. How adorable is that?! A cute cookbook which is also an enjoyable read. It has been a long time since I read Little Woman and it was lovely to go back and have dinner with them. The book includes some great recipes and interesting historical facts about foods in the 1800's.
This book would make a great gift for any fan of Little Woman. I will definitely be purchasing a copy for my sister.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an advance copy of this title in exchange for an unbiased review.
I have to say I love cookbooks that accompany or support books.
This is not just a cook book, filled with quotes, references to Little women, an the time it was set in, historical facts, and recipes.
The pictures are wonderfully mouthwatering.
I am intrigued with the spice trade deviled eggs, and the beef stew with molasses and apple cider vinegar.
More than anything though I will be trying the hot milk sponge cake,
All in all a lovely book that would make a lovely gift.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I love cookbooks. I love trying new recipes or learning new ways to cook foods I already love to make. I loved this cookbook. I loved Little Women. It's one of my favorite books so getting this cookbook was a no brainer. I loved how they took things from the book to mix with fun recipes to try. It was a great find. I love buying cookbooks in paperback or hardcover and I would definitely order a copy of this to add to my collection
I have read several books lately that combine books and food, and I say bravo to this trend. I love Little Women, and have read it over and over again. Not only does each recipe look delicious, but each also evokes nostalgic memories of this timeless story. I have also tired a couple of the recipes, and they were delicious. I am planning to order a couple copies, because what would be a better gift for someone who loves the book?
First of all, I love cookbooks with a literary theme and I found The Little Women Cookbook by Wini Moranville to be charming, interesting, and just plain fun. The recipes reflect the March household, the foods they ate, and the world they lived in. There is a variety of recipes, with clear instructions and outstanding photographs. The illustrations add to the overall charm of the cookbook, the photographs are simply beautiful, and the various quotes from the novel as well as the short blurbs about Louisa May Alcott make this cookbook a complete package.
This cookbook would be a wonderful gift for anyone who likes Little Women. It’s a peek into the lives of the March sisters and how they grew up – something a Little Women fan would enjoy.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
From breakfast to dinners, to picnic fare, all the recipes spoken about in Little Women, are here! From the Cheese and Jam Turnovers (above) that are a neat take on a cheese scone, to Cheese, Butter and Celery Sandwiches (who knew Celery was 'fancy food' in Alcott's time?), to Apple Orchard Chicken, to the history of Macaroni and Cheese, and how to host a proper Victorian era meal, this is a book that is part cookbook, part literary fandom, and part history! And sure to please everyone! We can vouch for the Hannah's Smoked Sausage and Potato Mess- it was quite "Yummy!:" this past week!
Especially with the movie coming out, this book is just what you need to some fun Fall and Christmas parties! You may want to give one with the Alcott book as hostess gifts this holiday season! It would be fun to cook your way through the book! I can see quite a few high schoolers loving the book more this way! LOL. In any event, it's a fun cookbook and not one to be missed for its simple English cooking!
The photos of the recipes with quotes from the book that either relate to the recipe or explain how the author came up with the idea for the recipe were a nice touch. This is a great book for anyone who loves Little Women or loves to cook recipes that relate to the books they are reading.
The Little Women Cookbook
Tempting Recipes from the March Sisters and Their Friends and Family
by Wini Moranville; Louisa May Alcott
Little Women is a classic even today. It has been made into movies and lives on long past the time it was first published. Food is integral to life and it was also part of the March family’s life, too. In this book the author has presented recipes based on information in Little Women and also from information she gleaned from cookbooks of the era. She has modernized the recipes for today’s cooks and yet...if you really think about it...cooking methods and ingredients may change a bit over time while still maintaining the comfort and history they have provided through the ages.
I am a cookbook collector and remember the books Louisa May Alcott wrote. I loved Joe perhaps best of all and remembers of the family so enjoyed her book, too, when I found it. Louisa May Alcott was more than the writer of Little Women and this book provides you with what more she was. There is a photograph of the house she wrote in, mention of her life and books and homes and orchards.
This book has information with and within each chapter that is educational and interesting. Illustrations are beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed looking through and imagining creating the recipes. That said, I also have eaten many of the recipes mentioned growing up in the Midwest (I am 67) and remembered as I read the milk toast my mother served...especially when I was sick and the oatmeal I ate then and still make today and then others like buckwheat pancakes, griddle cakes, sandwiches, pot pies, macaroni and cheese and cookies. The fun bits added were how they browned macaroni and cheese long ago since there were no broilers and why blanc mange is not made the same now because we have easier ways to do it.
Anyway, this was a fun book to read and I can see families having it to cook from if they watch Little Women or read it together. I can also see teachers who might use the book in classes also having integrated cooking lessons using this cookbook.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I recommend it? Yes
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press for the ARC – This is my honest review
5 Stars
I thought that this was a wonderful cookbook for any fan of Little Women to have and enjoy but I also thought it would be a welcome addition to any cookbook collection. This cookbook offers a good range of recipes. Some are based off the book, while others merely pertain to the era. There are breakfast, lunch, dinner, beverages, desserts and some party/special occasion recipes included. I feel that these recipes require a variety of cooking skill levels from very basic to moderately advanced. This cookbook has charming graphics, delightful quotes and attractive photographs. If you are a true devotee of Little Woman or are looking for another addition to your collection, I highly recommend this entertaining and beautiful book.
This was an adorable, enjoyable cookbook and I noted down a few of the recipes for future baking/cooking! Makes me want to re-read the book, which I just read for the first time this year or re-watch the 1994 movie!
Delightful! Filled with quotes and passages from "Little Women" as well as delicious recipes inspired by the book. The author consulted many cookbooks from that time period in order to come up with authentic recipes but they have also been updated to make them suitable for modern day cooking. I received an e-version of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review but happened upon it in my local indie bookstore and bought a hard copy as well. My children and I are very much looking forward to eating like Little Women and Little Men!
Thank you to #NetGalley and Harvard Common Press. All opinions are my own.
A wonderful little book of fifty recipes all relating to things baked, cooked or created in the book "Little Women'. There is a good variety of savoury and sweet in the collection and many have photos of the finished article. There are March family mottoes from the book throughout, and it is beautifully illustrated. A particularly brilliant gift for any fans of Louisa May Alcott but just a lovely recipe book for anyone who loves cooking. Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher, Harvard Common Press for an ARC.
I included this title in a new fall cookbooks review post and will send the link and the details to the publisher in the next round of this process.
I love cookbooks! I love reading cookbooks and marking pages of recipes to try. I wasn't sure what to expect with The Little Women Cookbook assuming it would be primarily a novelty related to the Louisa Alcott book. I was pleasantly surprised to learn how things were made in the 1800's- ingredients used as well as what foods were eaten.
This cookbook would be a great gift for a cookbook collector, a history buff that likes to cook or any Little Women fan.
Thanks to Wini Moranville and Harvard Common Press for the chance to review this book.
Such a sweet little cookbook, lovely homey recipies with the Little Women theme running all the way through.
A great accompaniment to the novel, or the upcoming film.
Cute cookbook. Some recipes have historical value perhaps, while others are modern takes off of what is in the book. Most recipes are things I would actually make. In fact, the chicken salad with pasta goes on the menu this week!
Great recipes and easy to follow. I loved Little Women as a teenager so to now have a cook book in the same vein is great.
Thank you to both NetGalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my review
This cookbook is so much fun! Recipes have passages from Little Women accompanying them. I tried a few of the recipes. My favorite is the French Chocolate - heavenly hot chocolate made with heavy cream. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to cook, or who cherishes Little Women like I do.
Thank you to NetGalley and QuartoPublishing Group - Harvard Common Press for The Little Women Cookbook by Wini Moranville. This is a book full of recipes inspired by the book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. The recipes are divided into four chapters – 1: Hannah’s Breakfasts, 2: Gatherings with Family and Friends, 3: March Family Dinners and Suppers, and 4: Sweet Treats, Desserts, and Drinks.
The recipes I enjoyed the most were: Oatmeal Porridge with Apples, Cinnamon, and Maple Syrup; Roast Beef Picnic Sandwiches (but I left out the pickles); Spice-Trade Deviled Eggs; Apple Orchard Chicken; Beef Stew with Molasses and Apple Cider Vinegar; and Dessert Crepes.
This cookbook is sprinkled through with quotes from Little Women that help explain why each recipe was chosen. I would like to have seen more pictures of the recipes; the pictures that were included were beautiful. The index is great and lists recipes by ingredient which I think is the best kind of index in a cookbook.
This is a short, little cookbook with some unique recipes. It would be great for any lovers of Little Women, but for those who do not love the story, it would disappoint.
Really sweet idea. I specifically requested this book with a friend in mind, hoping that this would make the perfect gift. I absolutely adore the cover, the added quotes and the illustrations are gorgeous, I wish there were more! Most of the recipes didn't have a picture to accompany them, which I'm personally not a fan of. It's usually the visual, seeing what you can create, that makes me want to actually try it. This book is a modern take on olden day dishes. It is short but sweet.
Food plays a big role in Little Women. It features on occasions of love and affection, such as family gatherings and friendly picnics, and it is also there to help provide sympathy and comfort. Food is also used on different occasions in the book, such as when poor Amy submits to peer pressure, and takes pickled limes to school - the latest trend.
The authors have researched historical recipes, and combined them with modern ones with attractive, mouth-watering pictures. Imagine that you are Jo on a family picnic with roast beef sandwiches or Amy eating richer French recipes! Most of the recipes look fairly easy, even for those who are not good cooks.
This book is enchanting, and I look forward to trying some of the recipes.
I received this free ebook from www.netgalley.com in return for an honest review.
Pretty cool cookbook if you ask me, loved looking at the recipes but I couldn't make anything because the kitchen is not mine, sorry wanted to *frown* maybe later!
A charming book. Part cookbook, part American history, this will be a delight for fans of the Little Women books, as well as anyone interested in historical recipes or mid-19th century American life. Organized roughly by meal type (breakfast, picnic, etc.), you can read cover to cover or just page through for something that catches your eye.
(Note: This is one of two Little Women cookbooks coming out this fall to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the novel's publication. Both, of course, are called The Little Women Cookbook. I haven't seen or reviewed the other, but this one seems like a good choice for fans or library collections.)
Wini Moranville’s The Little Women Cookbook features yummy and approachable recipes from the March sisters and their friends. With charming illustrations and quotations from the novel, it is a delight. I enjoyed revisiting the novel through the lens of communal meals. Well-chosen quotations from Little Women keep our attention on the inspiration source for the recipes.
The Little Women Cookbook is my favorite cookbook I’ve read recently. What a charming little book! I have a deep nostalgic love for both Little Women and for heirloom recipes (even though I can’t eat many of them due to dietary restrictions), and this book offered plenty of both, presented in an absolutely beautifully designed and formatted cookbook, full of fascinating culinary history, biographical tidbits about Alcott and her family and home, and lovely artwork.
This is honestly one of the best tie-in cookbooks I’ve even read. The recipes as presented sound delicious and accessible to the modern reader, without sounding anachronistic to the historical period of the book they honor. Due to being dishes typical to their era, there really is almost no dish that my vegan-preferring, gluten intolerant self can hope to eat, but for those without similar dietary restrictions, the dishes sound delicious as well as nostalgic, updated with modern conveniences, ingredients, and measurements that surely all the Marches, particularly the kitchen-challenged Jo, would have loved.
Each recipe is presented in a charmingly beautiful book, complete with lovely color food photography, and short but fascinating and relevant information about each recipe, not only how it ties in to the Marchs’ story, but also historical context for the dish, and even reasons and methods of updating the recipes to make them more accessible to contemporary readers. No longer must cooks heat a shovel over open flame and apply it to the top of mac and cheese in order to brown it, for instance. We have much better ovens than cooks of their day did, and can trust those ovens to evenly bake and brown such dishes. The author is clearly passionate about the topics of both Little Women and of food and cookbooks, and has clearly done due diligence with researching both topics. I learned so much from reading this, and enjoyed every minute of it.
I hadn’t remembered just how much food figures into the Marchs’ story, so the inclusion of quotations from Little Women throughout the book, and references to culinary facts and trends of their era, such as the contents of the actual cookbook Meg uses when she’s first married, are fascinating and charming. I’ll admit that there’s some repetition of quotations and stories. Many of the food passages in the story feature multiple dishes, that are spread throughout this cookbook, and so stories, quotations, and historical facts can be repeated several times by the end of the book. But that small fact is the closest thing I’d have to a complaint about this book.
I’m so grateful that #Netgalley and Harvard Commons Press/ Quarto let me read an advance copy of #TheLittleWomenCookbook in exchange for an honest review. I loved every minute of it, and highly recommend it to cookbook lovers and fans of Little Women alike, especially if you have a conventional diet that permits enjoying all the recipes featured here. Even if you cannot, or do not wish to, cook the recipes, the book is lovely enough to be a fun coffee table book or addition to a cookbook library.
I'm sorry but I could not ever get this downloaded appropriately on my blue fire reader. Just by the title and the reviews of others, I for sure plan to search it out at my local bookstore as would bet a few of my home-cooking, Little Women loving friends would enjoy.
The Little Women Cookbook consists of multiple recipes based off the beloved classic novel Little Women. All of the recipes are so good and fun to make! My favorite was the buckwheat pancakes!
I highly recommend this book! It is the perfect book to relive those times of reading Little Women. I can't wait to add the hard copy of this book to my self!
A great addition for any fan of Little Women! I was sold on this book the second I saw the cover, and the recipes did not disappoint. There's a great variety of foods - a few that I'm hesitant about, but SO many that I can't wait to try. From breakfast foods, to snacks, to desserts, this book has it all, with a tale that ties it to the beloved novel by Louisa May Alcott.
What a lovely treasure for those of us that have long loved Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. With a new movie being released near Christmastime 2019, I've been rereading Little Women. I was very happy to find this cookbook, full of recipes mentioned or inspired by the stories in the book. It is obvious that the author did a lot of research for recipes from the time, but she has also updated her recipes to make them more palatable to the modern palate (and the modern cook!). The book itself is a fun read. Each recipe features a quote from Little Women, and notes from the author that give the recipe context in the Little Women story and/or time period. Most recipes feature full color pictures of the intended result, and there are many pages that feature additional information about a particular activity or type of dish in the context of the March family and the lives they lived. The book is colorful, well organized, and features recipes that with detailed but simple instructions. I've only tried one recipe so far: Hannah's Cottage Pie, but I loved it and had a very old version of Little Women playing on my Ipad as I cooked. It was fun, tasty, and had the added benefit of nostalgia and warm memories! I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 stars.
I'm kinda new to reading seriously since it's just been 2 years for me so I haven't explored the classics just yet nor do I know much. So it was nice to have a bit of introduction to Little Women (even if it was a cookbook) which made me also want to read it!
Anyways, as for the recipes, a lot of them sounded tasty especially the meat dishes which were a lot so a plus for me! The photography was really good and the doodles were adorable.
The reason why I deducted 0.5 from my rating is because there weren't a lot of food pics and I love seeing those.
Thank you Netgalley for providing me with the digital copy for an honest review.
Loved this! If you are a Little Women fan, you must read this. If you are a foodie and enjoy coocking, you must read it. Warming, charming, delicious.
The Little Women Cookbook by Wini Moranville is a must-have for fans of the classic Louisa May Alcott series. The book contains simple recipes that are inspired by the food in the books. Also, there are some cute illustrations and quotes from the stories to accompany the instructions.
One of my favourite classics, Little Women, is a story that celebrates families and sisters. The Little Women Cookbook carries on this theme with some straightforward recipes that will bring you back to the world of the March family. Recipes, such as Jo’s Much Improved Asparagus and Amy’s “Pickled Lime” Sugar Cookies, will evoke strong memories of the books and its characters.
❀ WHIMSICAL IMAGES
This cookbook not only features recipes that are influenced by Alcott’s books, it also contains some whimsical images and photographs. In addition, the author shares quotes from the stories and some history about the era the book was written in. These little tidbits make the book much more than a collection of recipes, but a companion for fans of the original stories.
Mr. Bhaer’s chocolate drops are represented in this book, and the Vanilla Butter Cookies that are included in the cookbook are quick, easy, and delicious. They were definitely gobbled up pretty fast at my house, as I imagine Meg’s children would have in Little Women.
❀ GREAT GIFT IDEA
If you have a Little Women fan in your life, this book would make a great gift. It is a pretty cookbook that will be a great addition to any shelf. It makes the wait for the new movie a little bit easier, for sure!
Many wonderful memories. As soon as I started reading the book I decided I need to read little women again. (And cry again and laugh again). As a book is beautiful, the designs are adorable and the pictures are crisp and clear. The recipes old fashion with a twist, well written.
I think it would be very good present pairing it with the novel.
What a cute and adorable cookbook! Whether you love the March sisters or not this cookbook is surely one you’ll enjoy.
Charming illustrations and quotes from the novel are well done and a great inspirational source for the recipes.
Thank you Netgalley for an advance copy for my honest review.
This is the perfect gift for the little women fan in your life. The recipes are helpful broken down into sections for all the different types of meals. The recipes are simple and easy to follow but also seem delicious.
Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to review this book for my honest opinion. What a cute little cookbook that was well researched for The Little Women empire. This cookbook has recipes that would have been made in Louisa May Alcott's time but modified to be appetizing to us as well. I could see someone taking this cookbook and hosting a themed tea time or themed meal.
Wini Moranville’s The Little Women Cookbook features yummy and approachable recipes from the March sisters and their friends. I enjoyed this literary cookbook but I wish it was a little better designed and had more interesting photos.
This charming cookbook has clearly detailed recipes that are simple and easy to follow. I particularly like that the ingredients are familiar and accessible. I also love that Moranville includes set menus for dinner parties and picnics so you can dine just like the characters.
The book is divided into four chapters filled with delicious recipes: Hannah’s Breakfasts, Gatherings with Family and Friends, March Family Dinners and Suppers; and Sweet Treats, Desserts, and Drinks. There are familiar recipes like mac and cheese and fish chowder alongside unusual dishes like Jo’s Shellfish Relish and Meg’s Currant Jelly Sauce. I cannot wait to make Maple-Cornmeal Drop Biscuits or Amy’s Frothy French Drinking Chocolate!
Moranville’s dedication to history truly makes this book unique. She includes information on traditional nineteenth century cooking, mentions popular cookbooks of that era and gives examples of traditional meals from the March sisters’ time. I love learning about the food history in this fun and approachable way!
I feel like I reread the novel through this cookbook! At the beginning of each recipe, there are quotes from the book that neatly tie into the recipes. There are also fun anecdotes about Louisa May Alcott. Did you know that she referred to her house as “Orchard Slump” and that her father was vegan?
The cookbook features some bright full-colour pictures and a cute page design. I love the adorable illustrations of the March sisters. However, I wish the illustrations carried throughout to make the book’s design livelier. I also wish there were much more pictures and that the pictures were more interesting and relevant to the book. They are good pictures but they could have belonged to any cookbook and they didn’t particularly reflect Little Women.
The Little Women Cookbook is an excellent literary cookbook. Although, I wanted a more interesting design and more specific photos, this is a wonderful collection. This is perfect for those who love literary cookbooks, food history, and, of course, Little Women fans. I love literary cookbooks and this will be a fun addition to my collection!
👩👩👩👩 little women out of 5!
This was a truly lovely cookbook that will take you back into the classic read Little Women. Filled with homey feeling recipes directly from the classic any true fan will be transported into the book and come out the other side excited about cooking some tasty food. It was a great celebration of Little Women and will have you picking it up again just so you can find the recipes mentioned throughout. The author did a.beauty job and even included fabulous illustrations, and quotes from the stories. It is a well rounded cookbook and the recipes are easy to make. I gave the Gingerbread cake a try and it turned out beautifully. I'll be making it again for the upcoming holiday season. I look forward to trying more recipes and to returning to the classic, it is definitely a.favored read!!!
An adorable book for lovers of Little Women. While some recipes are mentioned in the book, others are inspired by the time period. The illustrations are beautiful.
I found the illustrations and the notes interesting and loved the way the recipes tied into the book with the relevant part at the start of the recipes.
The information about food in the past was also a great addition.
The recipes were interesting and easy to follow with everyday ingredients.
A lovely book for foodie fans as well as Little Women fans.
Everyone loves the March family from the classic book, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. And anyone who is a foodie, most likely has wondered just what their favorite characters in the book would have eaten during both the good and bad times in the novel. The March family had their financial problems, and so most of the recipes in the Little Women Cookbook were easy on the budget, using foods that were most likely cheap during the later 1800s in New England, when Little Women was written (two volumes – one in 1868 and one in 1869). Wini Moranville, a noted food writer has captured the ambience of the time period while at the same time presenting easy, doable recipes that were most likely served by the Marches and their friends.
This cookbook is fun, since it has quotes from the original book, and readers can imagine their favorite characters living in that time and eating foods that were popular. Picnics were always something everyone loved, and the Roast Beef Picnic Sandwiches are delicious, as well as Amy’s Lemonade to go with them. Other dishes from the period, but that have been modernized, are Baked New England Cod (a new favorite), Apple Orchard Chicken, and Apple Slump. Because Hannah most likely immigrated from somewhere in the UK, some of the dishes like Hannah’s Cottage Pie and Fruit and Nut Trifle have English or British roots.
Although there aren’t pictures of every dish, there are mouthwatering photographs of many of the dishes featured in the book. And while there aren’t all that many recipes, the ones that are included are for dishes that most people will want to try and especially want to eat.
It’s no wonder that this delightful cookbook was a finalist by Good Reads for cookbook of the year in 2019. Owning the cookbook will inspire readers and cooks to go back and re-read the novel; it will be just as enjoyable, or maybe more so that reading it for the first time. Highly recommended.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
love this book for the recipes and the little women fan material! The photos are beautiful, all the recipes are exciting and accessible and overall it is well written and constructed.
I re-read Little Women, this time with my daughter, as we made some (not all) of the recipes in this book. Making the old-timey recipes helped connect her with the book, I think, and was tasty as well as fun!
I am a huge fan of Louisa May Alcott and of the era in which she wrote her classic books, including Little Women. I also own a Bed and Breakfast so I’m always on the hunt for great recipes – new and old. This cookbook was a dream come true. So often books refer to the food the characters are enjoying and, yet, in older classics it can difficult to find a corresponding recipe. With The Little Women Cookbook, we get to enjoy the flavors of that time but with modern era ingredients and, of course, cooking appliances.
I prepared multiple recipes from the book, from main dishes to desserts, and I haven’t found one yet that I didn’t love. Admittedly, this time of year my favorites included the Gingerbread and Apple Dumpling recipes, both of which were better than my own grandmother’s. If you like to cook/bake and adore cookbooks as much as I do, then this is a must-have addition to your kitchen. Bake up something wonderful and enjoy the new movie based on Alcott’s timeless classic, Little Women.
Thanks so much to the #QuartoGroup who keeps me on my toes in the kitchen and to #Netgalleyfor my copy of this gem.
If you're a fan of Little Woman, you'll really enjoy this adorable cookbook. Makes a great gift too!
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
I use to listen to the music mentioned in the books I read, but it never occurred to me I could also cook something I read about the way the characters would do it. That's why I found it so genious someone had that idea, especially when the book in question is "The Little Women", a classic everyone should read. Well done!
