What a wonderfully superb cookbook. It encompasses not only a classic story but also history lessons along with cooking lessons thrown in! There is nothing like enjoying food when you understand the past. This would make a marvelous addition to any young person’s home library but also something a parent can use as a family activity. Besides which it would also work as a great after school library program.
I received an advanced reader copy from NetGalley in exchange for my volunteer review.
It’s been many years since I read Little Women, but seeing this cookbook brought back the warm feelings that I had for the March family. While I don’t remember the foods mentioned, I can see that the recipes in this cookbook were surely similar to ones they might have enjoyed.
The recipes are a nice mix of the kinds of foods I would think of as mostly comfort meals. There aren’t any strange ingredients, so I think everyone would find something to enjoy; although I did see a recipe with sriracha sauce , which might have been a tad difficult to come across when this book was written.
Here are a few of the ones that can be found: Buckwheat pancakes; Amy’s “Christmas Day” muffins; A better omelet for Marmee; Roast beef picnic sandwiches; Classic roast beef tenderloin; Apple orchard chicken; New England fish chowder; Garden pot pie; Hannah’s cottage pie; Bonbons and mottoes; and Dessert Crepes.
There are also quotes from the book and additional information scattered throughout. Overall, this is a very nice book for Little Women fans.
This was such a fun and interesting cookbook. It's almost like a mini-tour of 1800's cooking, with beautiful photographs to illustrate. It also contains random trivia, which made it more interesting.
If one knows of a Little Woman fan, this could work great as a gift.
This charming little cookbook is full of recipes that one could imagine Marmee or Hanna preparing for Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth .For example, there’s a recipe for milk toast with an excerpt about how the March girls gave away their Christmas breakfast and returned home to bread and milk. The recipes are easy to make and really yummy. Amy’s Frothy French Drinking Chocolate is a particular favorite. I highly recommend getting in the kitchen with one of your favorite little women (or men) and trying these great recipes out.
Thank you Netgalley for a free e-copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
The foreword starts all with all the occasions of food in the Little Women Cookbook.
saleratus then and baking soda now.
The recipes have the context from the book of whats happening. Not all of the attempts in the original book are successful, which makes it poetic justice that this cookbook fixes them with foolproof recipes.
There's a bill of fare i.e menu for different meals like Picnic and Luncheon party.
Mottoes from the march family. I quite agree with Jo's "Something more than energy and goodwill is necessary to make a cook".
This is a cute book and a yummy one too. Specially designed and delicately curated for lovers of the book. With each recipe, one can find excerpts from the book and it's a pleasant way to live the experience of eating with the sisters

This is a must have for all Louisa May Alcott fans! It is vibrantly illustrated and organized into four chapters: breakfast, family gatherings, dinner and desserts. The author also includes some history about Louisa May Alcott and the author's fascination with historic and heirloom recipes.
Food is the kind of love you can see.
It begins with a delightful travel back to the March family and the lessons of generosity learned. Episodes from the story are revisited as they demonstrate how certain foods played an intricate role in their daily lives. The author has done extensive research and where no specific dish was identified she found recipes around 1850-1880 taking into account the March family resources and food popular at that time.
A popular breakfast of Milk-Toast is a reminder of simple times. Of course, the meals changed with the seasons and available crops. It would not be uncommon for one to serve a breakfast of cornbread, fried liver, boiled eggs and fried potatoes. They tended to eat a heartier and more varied breakfast than generally served in America today.
Gatherings with friends and family were not complete without favorite meals over picnics or Sunday roast. Evening suppers were quite light since their hearty meal was at breakfast. Sandwiches and salads were quite popular with rather peculiar ingredients amongst the upper-class including pigeon pie, duck, tongue, blanc-mange, cheese and biscuits. Back in the day, celery was considered a delicacy and displayed proudly in a vessel on the dinner table. An interesting recipe in this book is called Cheese, Butter and Celery Sandwiches. Again, what seems like a humble meal today was deemed a special treat as celery was expensive. Interesting since living in New England at the time, lobsters were plentiful! Salads would often display their flavor a through the greens available than the dressings applied. In addition to milder lettuce, they often had mustard greens, sorrel and watercress.
Family dinners consisted of inexpensive readily available ingredients such as fish and lobster, potatoes, biscuits and pot pies. Some interesting recipes are Creamed Ham on Toast, Hannah's Cottage Pie, Maple Cornmeal Drop Biscuits and Garden Pot Pie.
Sweet treats and desserts are always a favorite. As today, cookies of all sorts used everyday pantry essentials such as flour, sugar, eggs, milk and fruit. You will find a variety of dishes which have been adapted for today's convenience.
I enjoyed this cookbook for its recipes as well as its trip down memory lane.
This is a cookbook for Little Women fans. The author provided 50 recipes based on foods mentioned in the book and using cookbooks from the 1800s. She's updated the recipes so you use modern equipment and for modern tastes, but she included information about how the foods were made at the time along with quotes from the book. The recipes usually were "from scratch" but sometimes used store-bought puff pastry dough and such. These recipes do not cater to gluten or allergy concerns (which I didn't expect) and weren't what I'd call "healthy," but that's not really the point of this cookbook.
The book contained 7 breakfast recipes, 10 gathering/picnic recipes (sandwiches, salads, etc.), 13 dinner and supper recipes, 18 treat and desert recipes, and 2 drink recipes. Along with some interesting historical cooking and meal information. There were some full-color pictures of the recipes, but not a picture of every recipe. The instructions seemed clear and simple (not complicated or a huge number of steps).
With over 50 recipes, every food event in Louisa Mae Alcott’s Little Women is replicated using modern ingredients and cooking methods in the Little Women Cookbook.
From simple lemonade and hot chocolate to fruit trifles and Jo’s corned beef, the book has recipes for all skill levels. Many of the recipes are vegetarian like the garden pot pie. There are breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack recipes but the emphasis is on desserts. Or that just may be me . Many are little remembered now like apple slump and jellyroll cake.
I enjoyed the Little Women Cookbook. It was fun to see recipes that I had read about but had no idea how they were made. This a fun gift for the reader in your life. The only downside is there no nutritional information provided. 4 stars!
Thanks to Harvard Common Press and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

**OMG! I cannot believe that these reviews haven't been done! I am so sorry they are so late!!!**
I really enjoyed this book. The recipes were simple, down home and comforting. I will definitely be making some of these, maybe while I drink some tea and read a book in my chair. I really enjoyed the excerpts and articles on what the food was like when little women was set in.

The book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is a beloved favorite to many. With the movie coming out in December of this year, it is perfect timing for a Little Women-themed cookbook. The Little Women Cookbook is full of recipes either eaten by the March family in the book, or themed to the time frame. It includes pictures, adorable drawings, and passages from the book to describe where in the story the item would have been eaten. If you've always wanted to try the omelette made for their mother, or the once fashionable buckwheat cakes, you are in luck. As with most cookbooks, the book is divided into sections like main courses and desserts.
If you're a big fan of Little Women or curious about cooking around the time of the American Civil War, you'll be delighted by this new book.
The Little Women Cookbook by Winni Moranville is available from Harvard Quarto Press October 1st, 2019.
The March sister - Meg, Jo, Beth and even little Amy - have long been my favorite sisters. I jumped at the chance to view/read this cookbook - celebrating the sisters and their creator, Louisa May Alcott.
Recipes are cute and of the time - however, the draw of this book is the beautiful illustrations that are included.
This is a lovely book that will be a beautiful addition to any March sisters fan.
This is a short and sweet cookbook that references Louisa May Alcott's classic book beautifully, complete with small blurbs and illustrations. The photos are also well staged, I just wish that there are more of them! It is obvious that the author is a fan and as a fellow fan I was completely taken in. For dietary reasons a lot of these things I can't make as is but I certainly plan to adapt some for my own use. I am certain as well that I will turn some out for the benefit of others, like the fruit and nut trifle or my personal favourite, gingerbread.
I'm a collector of cookbooks. I have so many that any new ones have to unique and full of recipes that I'm willing try. This is not just a cookbook, it's a conversation starter for many of my friends and me. We all grew up with Little Women and have read many, many books based on or featuring the characters from this classic. The recipes definitely have the feel of the family's table and everyone of us loved the results. So, the book is great, the recipes are great and the Little Women feel is there. What does that add up to? 5 stars!
An interesting read as well as containing a good range of recipes inspired by or taken from Little Women. The author updates the recipes to reflect modern ingredients and equipment but provides plenty of background and fascinating historical details.
Some of the recipes in this cookbook were, interesting. I think as a companion book for lovers of “Little Women” this is a great book. I enjoyed the tie ins with the book. I don’t see myself making many of these recipes. Some were too different for me.
It was beautifully illustrated. And healthy. A great cookbook for literature lovers.
Little Women is one of my favorite books of all time. I have loved it since I was a kid. I also love the movie version from the 90's and I am super excited about the upcoming movie adaptation that is coming out for Christmas this year. I love this beautiful cookbook. The gorgeous cover caught my eye first with all of the pretty colors and fun cartoon portraits of the sisters. I thought the recipes were wonderful and that the passages from the book to go along with each picture really added to the overall nostalgic feel of the book. I also love the fun illustrations in the cookbook. I have intentions of talking my book club into reading Little Women (and then going to see the new movie together) for our December meeting and having this excellent cookbook would be a great addition to a fun Little Women themed December. I can't wait!
So excited to get this in hand when it's published - as a long time fan of Little Women, I was curious how the cookbook would be done. I love the photos, and the history that is given in addition to the recipes. Will definitely be an excellent addition to a shelf, and looking forward to recommending it for a "What I'm Giving" table at our store!
This cookbook is perfect for fans of Louisa May Alcott's work. The connection to the book, Little Women, is well done throughout the cookbook. The quotes and texts relate well to the recipes and make it a delightful read. I think this would make a great library program -- celebrate Louisa May Alcott and make recipes from this book!
