"Baby: A Soppy Love Story" by Philippa Rice is an adorable and heartfelt collection of comics that perfectly captures the joys and challenges of parenthood. The charming illustrations and relatable storytelling beautifully depict the journey from pregnancy to raising a newborn. It's a delightful read, especially for new or expectant parents, and a wonderful gift to cherish during this special time in life.
'Baby: A Soppy Story’ with words and art by Philippa Rice is a collection of comics about an expectant couple.
In this sequel to Soppy: A Love Story, we follow the same couple as they go through pregnancy, birth and life with a newborn. There are humorous moments as well as poignant ones. Anyone who has gone through this will recognize the anxiety that this situation brings.
I enjoy Philippa Rice’s work and this one feels more personal. The tone is less self-deprecating and more sweet, just as the previous volume was.
Philippa Rice's comics are so sweet. She illustrates relatable slices of life in such an unoffensive adorable way. I prefer reading them as she posts on social media, but only because I zip through these books too quick to really appreciate each panel. I love the simple contrasted art style. This would make a good gift for new parents.
The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was very cute and an accurate representation of being pregnant and being a new parent. I love Philippa's humour and art style. She used both to show the many challenges that new mothers and fathers face including not sleeping. non stop laundry, nursing challenges, and feeling like you are the only one who can correctly care for you baby.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait to see what Philipps releases next.
I would like to thank NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this ebook.
Such a heartwarming and relatable book! Having had a baby myself the past year, I was delightfully surprised by how accurately the author captured the essence of bringing up this new being and the chaos that surrounds it. I loved the colour palette of this book. I would high;y recommend this book!
I loved this!! What a sweet and adorable graphic novel. I read Soppy a couple of years ago and fell in love. Baby was a great continuation on their story.
A relatable and adorable collection of the moments that make up new parenthood. A wonderful gift for any parents in your life.
I've loved everything I've read bu this illustrator, The art is so heartwarming. I was a bit hesitant of this one, but I loved it a lot. I've had some of her art from the previous book printed and using them as art, and I'm definitely thinking of buying this one and hanging some of the art in it.
I loved this just as much as I enjoyed soppy! This was really cute and I don't have much to add as this isn't a graphic novel with dialogue, it focuses entirely on telling the story through graphics, which I think she did well in this. The color combo is so satisfying and just makes this nice to look at! I'd read more soppy stories in the future for sure.
Philippa Rice follows up her love story Soppy with a new chapter chronicling the couple’s first foray into parenthood in Baby. The volume reads like a collection of newspaper dailies, with minimalist but vibrant art. The pages break down the experience of being a new parent into snapshots of moments. The structure is something more natural than forcing a single overarching narrative. These are memories made manifest in the way we recall them from our own minds. The moments when Rice chooses to exaggerate the visuals for emotional impact are great representations of how fraught these moments can be. Baby is s a delightful volume that paints a vivid picture of the ups and downs of a life-changing experience.

'Baby: A Soppy Story' portrays a young couple through their lives as they find out they are expecting their first child, the trials and joys of pregnancy, and what life is like when your little bundle comes home.
I have to preface this by saying that I have not read any of the other 'Soppy' works, but after reading this one, I would definitely Iove to. I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel! I loved the storyline and how true their emotions felt. As a mother of two myself, I found myself chuckling a few times while reading, connecting with the thoughts and feelings of the new parents. This graphic novel is cute, sweet, honest and a definite read for expecting parents or those looking for a little nostalgia over the baby years.
4/5 * Would highly recommend!
It is a graphic novel tracking journey of a young couple from their conception to their life after birth of their first kid.
It is funny and touches every aspect of a pregnancy.
Artwork is simple. Just adequate to be enjoyed in a graphic novel.
Cozy relationship of couple and their mutual cooperation is heart warming to read.
It is less about baby and more about parents who struggle a lot to help propogate their family and to care for newborn.
Admirable part is focus on positive moments of pregnancy and simplicity of details.
Thanks netgalley and publisher for review copy.
Really cute look at a family from conception to childbirth and all the awesome postpartum craziness.
This was a very quick read and so precious. Mcmeel does a great job of showcasing the simple everyday moments throughout a couple's pregnancy journey. I love how there's scenes which compare what the woman goes through versus the man. I've never been pregnant so I can't relate to much of what's in this book but it was very sweet to read. It seemed to me like this book put more of a lighthearted spin on the pregnancy journey but there were still some emotional moments. The artwork was very well done as well. One part I thought was funny was the evolution of the mom's sleeping style with her sleeping with more and more pillows. Overall a very cute and emotional read.
I admit, I may not be the target demographic for this book. I am a Millennial, and I do live with my partner, but we are not considering a child at this point, and we definitely have not had a child at this point, so while I can nod at these comics and say, "That sure seems like a thing that would happen if I had a baby," I lack the actual life experience to fully appreciate these comics. That said, I know of several people, close friends, who are new parents who would appreciate these comics, and I intend to purchase a copy of the book for them for their birthday, because even though it's not my cup of tea right now, Philippa Rice still has a true talent for capturing so-called "soppy" moments with simple, cosy artwork, and the book is very good.
There is a loose narrative running through the tri-color illustrations as Rice and her partner find a home, Rice discovers her pregnancy, goes through it, has a surprise induced labor, and then the baby happens and grows a bit. The trials of pregnancy and early infancy are portrayed with gentle but knowing humor, and usually followed by illustrations that remind the reader of the loveliness of having a child, despite the hard parts. I imagine these are more relatable to parents, but even as a non-parent I was able to appreciate the sentiments encompassed in Rice's comics.
This is the sort of book which would make a fine gift for a baby shower or a first Christmas, or basically any time in early parenthood when the horrors of non-sleeping infants are still fresh in the mind, or looming on the horizon. It is also probably not the sort of book a person needs to read more than once, unless to share favorite comics with someone else, so if you need to save money and the library has a copy, read that. But, I mean, this is a young artist who just had a baby, so maybe a buy a copy if you can? Because it's a good little book.
"Mom: Big Burpo!
Dad: Did you call me
Mom: Only if you identify as 'big burpo'."
I have become quite a fan of works published by Andrews Mcmeel! I cannot think of a book published by them that has got me down as a reader! I am always excited about whatever they have in store. This one was such a relaxing read for me! It gives an insight into becoming parents for the first time: all the baby shopping, lessons and everything a parent does to ensure themselves ready when the baby comes. It also shows the sleepless nights, constant feeding and how it takes a toll on new parents and how every tiny thing that happens is cherished. It captures parenthood so perfectly! The adorable comics speaks so many volumes for moms and dads! Everything about this book is picture-perfect!
Recommended: The perfect read to anyone who is expecting or has a baby and you can also read it for fun as I did!
A sequel to Soppy!!! I'm so pleased I liked this just as much as the first one. As someone who has never had a baby, I still managed to enjoy this and see my sister in laws in this character. Soppy is such a feel good comic about love and the family you choose - about the little things in life that are special. This would make a nice little present for a couple ready to start a family.
this was such a cute story, with an adorable art style. I definitely feel like checking the authors other works.
Thank you to Netgalley and Phillipa Rice for early access to "Baby"!
★★★★★
This was so Relatable! I loved every single page. I thought Phillipa Rice was able to create something that showcased the good, bad, weird and wonderful of having a new baby and the art is just so charming. I had a great time reading it and found myself smiling and connecting with the feelings of joy, insecurity and frustration that the two parents faced.
Phillips Rice is a favorite and this just adds to that feeling. Absolutely recommend and will be looking for my own finish copy!
