Cute, but true to the bone, of getting pregnant and having a baby, and all the joys and exhaustion alone the way, but with the humor that Phillippa has shown in her past cartoons.
<img src="https://g2comm.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/baby.png" alt="" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5458" />
The humor plays on how baby changes everything, but also Philipp's love for her husband, no matter what. and for the baby as well.
Perfect for new moms, and others who still remember what the early months are like.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
This comic was so relatable. I laughed and had flashbacks to everytime I felt these emotions or these things happened in our life. Great comic and it was impressive to be so relatable and emotional with few words.
For the beginning of your relationship to the first few months of baby’s life this is a wonderful book to enjoy.
The bold red, black, white color scheme was eye catching.
This is so cute! It is a perfect book for mummies or mum-to-be. I am a little boy's mum and I can tell this is 100% accurate. It was like going back to my pregnancy days having the same problems. And then with the baby, it almost made me cry. I thought I am the only one with these kind of moments and thoughts. I am relieved that I am not crazy.
This book is for every mummies and daddies to remember how was when you met for the first time your little ones. And if you're thinking to have a baby then you should read this book to know what you'll expect.
I love Philippa Rice's work so much that I immediately started reading this book right after Andrews McMeel Publishing approved my advance copy request. I couldn't think of doing anything else!!
And I wasn't disappointed at all. "Baby" is hilarious!!
I love when she tells him "Stop asking me about every tiny thing. Figure it out for yourself!" and then literally comes back on the next page telling him to use cream, to do this, this, this and that. Omg, all moms are really the same.
The struggle is so real. hahaha
I don't have kids yet, but from what I've seen from people close to me all these moments are so very relatable. Great read!!
This book was so sweet! I think it perfectly captures parenthood: the anticipation and fears that people feel when they discover they are expecting a baby and also what happens in their life when that baby finally comes. Parenthood definitely is a whirlwind of emotions and these comics show it so well and in such a nice and cute way. I love how the author fully represented the everyday life with a baby in the house. I truly recommend this book!
This was very cute. I loved the illustrations. This was pretty spot on when it comes to new baby things.
Thanks Netgalley for the ARC
As a mother, I loved this so much. I cannot wait to pick up a finished copy for myself to read multiple times. The drawings were adorable and I couldn’t stop smiling as I relived my own excitement over finding out I was going to be a mother.
A simple illustrated book written for future mommy's and daddy's.
Where the illustrations aren't the most appealing for readers and maybe not what you would expect.
At the same time this book is AMAZING!!!
Why?
The answer is very sipmle.
This book isn't showing a make-up pretend story about how beautiful it is.
Because becoming a parent is so much more than being on a pink cloud.
Breasfeeding, not enough sleep - it realy is major leaug sport.
And this are just a couple of the things about parenthood what this book is so truthfull about!
I love this book! If you are pregnant or know someone who is, this would make a great gift, for yourself of them. This is a comic/graphic novel that shows a heterosexual couple falling in love, establishing a life together, experiencing a pregnancy and becoming parents with all of the ups and downs that this entails. The illustrations are sooo adorable and emotive. This is a sweet yet honest look at an important stage in life. Highly recommended! I give it five stars.
Thanks to NetGalley and AndrewsMcMeel publishing for this book in exchange for an honest review.
I adored Soppy, so I had high expectations for this one and I was not disappointed!
Whereas in the first comic we had a relationship being developed, in here we have this couple in a steady relationship and finding out they're expecting.
Even though I'm not a mother, it was very easy to relate to all the steps between expecting and actually having a newborn at home. It was funny, cute and down to earth. I highly recommend it if you enjoyed the first one :)
4.90 stars ⭐
aaaaaaahh!! this is so cute!!! i love her art style so much!!! such a fun and real way to depict parenthood.
there's only one bad thing.... it left me wanting more :C
a must for Soppy fans!
I loved Philippa Rice's first Soppy graphic novel, so when I saw this new book I HAD to read it! It was just as adorable as expected!

Like Soppy (which is all about everyday moments in a loving relationship), Baby is also about everyday life. It is not so much a story as it is a family album of snapshots of Philippa & Luke's life. It gives a look into the cute, ordinary, and sometimes emotionally difficult, everyday real moments involved during a relationship pre-baby, during-baby-growing and post-baby-popping-out. Like Soppy, the main feel of this book is relatable and very sweet. And often funny too! This bit was my favourite!

Oh and the artwork is lovely too!
I recommend this book to anyone who is about to have a baby, who has just had a baby, or to anyone who loves cute things and cartoons like me! I read it all in one sitting - couldn't put it down - I loved it!

Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of this book. I've never clicked so fast to read a book!
Review to come in December on blog/Goodreads.
I received this comic from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
I absolutely adored the first book by this author/illustrator and so I was out of my mind excited when I spotted this book on Netgalley. Of course I had to request it, of course I had to read it. And read I did. As soon as I got the book I went to reading.
This one still focuses on Phillipa Rice and her boyfriend and their life together, however this time there is a new addition to the family, a tiny little baby. Her name is Robin and throughout the book we see how the author/illustrator goes through pregnancy and then birth and then we see the tiny little baby grow up. It was immensely adorable and fun, but we also see that it is a lot of work to care for such a little one.
I had such a big laugh when she looked at her kid sideways and thought her face was wrong but found she was looking at her ear. :P
As with the previous book this one has 3 main colours, red, white, and black. I still love that those colours were selected as it brought out the story more.
So I had tons of fun reading this one, it was really sweet. I hope the author/illustrator will bring out more books about her life as she writes them in a funny/interesting way that just makes you want to know more (I hope this doesn't sound too creepy, I don't mean it in a creepy way).
All in all, recommended!
This was such a cute collection of comics! It was so interesting to see the depiction of home life and romance for this author and their significant other, plus the added drama of adding in a baby into the mix. This was such an adorable comic collection with amazing art that made up for the lack of words at times. The art style was very unique and said a lot when words were not there. The dialogue itself was amazing too. It wasn't too rough or too dense, it was perfect for the comic. This was such an easy and quick read that was super enjoyable.
I received a copy of this comic in return for an honest review.
'Baby' is a short comic book that depicts the highs and lows of pregnancy life, along with the authors own experiences regarding parenthood.
Firstly, I would just like to say that as my first comic book from Philippa Rice, she has completely won my heart over with her adorable drawings and I will definitely be reading all of her future works ✨
I really enjoyed seeing how the author could depict wonderfully illustrated and detailed comics whilst only sticking to 3 main colours (red, white and black). I think that it helped to add a really cozy effect to the whole story, and it genuinely made me feel warm inside 🤗
I was sad to see the comic finish, but I think the ending successfully portrayed the message of "we're embarking on a new journey".
Definitely recommend this if you're looking for a short & sweet read!
Overall rating: 4.2 / 5
Just like her first graphic novel, the story and the art are simple but so cute. Definitely a feel good graphic novel. Even though I don’t have children, I think that everyone can relate to what the main character is going through when she discovers what is motherhood
I have already read the old book by Philippa Rice so I was delighted to keep on reading about her story and the coming of the little girl. I hope she will keep on drawing because I finde her stories delightful!
Avendo giá letto il libro precedente, sono stata molto contenta di sapere che una delle mie coppie virtuali preferite ha avuto una bambina! Ogni volta che apro Philippa Rice mi si scalda il cuore!
THANKS NETGALLEY FOR THE PREVIEW!
A worthy successor to one of all-time favorite series. Rice has a way of bringing you into her red, black, and red world and you simply never want to leave.

I needed something to clear my head, and Baby was exactly what I needed! I knew it was going to be something fun and entertaining to read. First of all, I want to say that it's so cute!!! I loved how the emotions are described and lived. The reader manages to feel what Soppy and Luke are going through during this important part of their life.
I liked the illustrations and the colors which characterize the work of Philippa Rice.
The story is real, hilarious and cute! Glad to had the opportunity to read it!
Like Philippa's previous work, Baby features the same adorable comic style with a red and black palette. I really like these series and I find them highly relatable!
I would like to thank the publisher for giving me a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved Phillippa Rice’s first graphic novel, Soppy, so I was excited to pick up her second, Baby: A Soppy Story. If you’ve read Soppy and loved the art style and minimal text you will likely enjoy Baby as well. Rice has a gift of conveying emotion in her drawings so that additional text is not needed to understand the story she is telling.
In Baby, we follow Rice and her partner through their experience of deciding to have a baby and subsequently having a baby. We get a glimpse into the small intimate moments of being pregnant and of being a new parent. This little gem would make the perfect gift for an expecting parent or new parent.
My daughter just turned one and this book left me feeling nostalgic about my pregnancy and her first year of life. The panel depicting her adding pillows while she sleeps as her stomach grows larger made me laugh out loud. The artwork in this little quaint graphic novel is simple and employs a narrow range of colors. It feels consistent, charming, and not overly complicated. I can see this being a good gift for art lovers expecting a baby or trying to survive their first year of parenthood.
Let me preface this by saying I haven't read Soppy. It has been on my radar though, and when I saw Baby on Netgalley I thought I'd give it a shot to see if I'd enjoy it. And I absolutely loved it! The art style is amazing, simple but meaningful. And the story and art combined make for such a soft, sweet read. Very wholesome. I thought this worked very well as a standalone as well.
A sweet, poetic journey of a couple through the pregnancy and delivery of their first baby. “Baby” is a charming collection of everyday moments and a celebration of life with baby.
I loved this book. I have a 15 month old and so many of the illustrations were spot on for things I felt or went through when pregnant or right after having him. This would be a great gift for new moms.
The beginning was so-so, but when it came to the pregnancy and baby, oh so relatable! From the constant need to pee, the uncomfortable positions when trying to sit or sleep, to the excitement of having the first baby and shopping for her! I enjoyed it.
The part where the husband lamented he can have some lie-in like the wife and she gave him an earful of what it was like to be her - this part I had a loud chuckle because it was so real and that it had had happened! From then on, my husband never said a word about it ever again lolol
Also the part where the baby showing preference to the dad made laugh too because it was so real! I am a mother of two now. It happened with my first one and now my second too! You'd think the baby would definitely prefer the mom to the dad, having spent more time with you, but nooooo that doesn't happen! Why? Can someone enlighten me please! Lol
Overall, a sweet, pleasant read. I'm going to get this book for my niece who's a first time mom! I'm sure she'd enjoy it!
I love the artwork. Rice's classic red, white, and black is just so striking and is enjoyable to read. Having recently had a baby, I commiserate with Rice and her struggles as a new mom. This was really beautiful.
Copy provided by NetGalley.
It was really cute too read, I love the style but I hope it would go deeper. I love that the only color is red!
Aww...my husband and I related a little too well to Phillippa Rice's first book, Soppy, so I was super excited to read Baby! My "baby" is now 3, but again I feel like Phillippa and I are truly living the same life LOL A wonderful graphic novel depicted day to day life of pregnancy and with a baby with her trusty partner by her side :-) <3
Baby is a sweet, yet real, take on pregnancy and having a new baby. The author reminds the reader of the challenges that exist for new parents without glossing over them. While I may not be a parent or an expecting parent, I've been around enough to be able to see my friends and family in the characters. I thought I might get tired of the same use of color, but I didn't. It helped to draw me in further. This is a cute, easy one-sitting read.
This was an ARC recommended via NetGalley.
I adore how the book was not about only the good and sweet moments but also about the tiresome things that comes with being a parent. The excessive thoughts and random outbursts. I loved the artwork as well. It was very clean and enjoyable.
Cute graphic novel ! I love Philippa Rice's art style, and this graphic novel was really entertaining to read since it shows eveything a couple goes through when having a baby. I found it really cute and interesting.
Very cute and realistic comics about life as new parents. Hope there is a next installment from Rice soon!
Thank you to Netgalley and Phillipa Rice for early access to "Baby"!
★★★★★
This was so Relatable! I loved every single page. I thought Phillipa Rice was able to create something that showcased the good, bad, weird and wonderful of having a new baby and the art is just so charming. I had a great time reading it and found myself smiling and connecting with the feelings of joy, insecurity and frustration that the two parents faced.
Phillips Rice is a favorite and this just adds to that feeling. Absolutely recommend and will be looking for my own finish copy!
A sequel to Soppy!!! I'm so pleased I liked this just as much as the first one. As someone who has never had a baby, I still managed to enjoy this and see my sister in laws in this character. Soppy is such a feel good comic about love and the family you choose - about the little things in life that are special. This would make a nice little present for a couple ready to start a family.
this was such a cute story, with an adorable art style. I definitely feel like checking the authors other works.
I admit, I may not be the target demographic for this book. I am a Millennial, and I do live with my partner, but we are not considering a child at this point, and we definitely have not had a child at this point, so while I can nod at these comics and say, "That sure seems like a thing that would happen if I had a baby," I lack the actual life experience to fully appreciate these comics. That said, I know of several people, close friends, who are new parents who would appreciate these comics, and I intend to purchase a copy of the book for them for their birthday, because even though it's not my cup of tea right now, Philippa Rice still has a true talent for capturing so-called "soppy" moments with simple, cosy artwork, and the book is very good.
There is a loose narrative running through the tri-color illustrations as Rice and her partner find a home, Rice discovers her pregnancy, goes through it, has a surprise induced labor, and then the baby happens and grows a bit. The trials of pregnancy and early infancy are portrayed with gentle but knowing humor, and usually followed by illustrations that remind the reader of the loveliness of having a child, despite the hard parts. I imagine these are more relatable to parents, but even as a non-parent I was able to appreciate the sentiments encompassed in Rice's comics.
This is the sort of book which would make a fine gift for a baby shower or a first Christmas, or basically any time in early parenthood when the horrors of non-sleeping infants are still fresh in the mind, or looming on the horizon. It is also probably not the sort of book a person needs to read more than once, unless to share favorite comics with someone else, so if you need to save money and the library has a copy, read that. But, I mean, this is a young artist who just had a baby, so maybe a buy a copy if you can? Because it's a good little book.
"Mom: Big Burpo!
Dad: Did you call me
Mom: Only if you identify as 'big burpo'."
I have become quite a fan of works published by Andrews Mcmeel! I cannot think of a book published by them that has got me down as a reader! I am always excited about whatever they have in store. This one was such a relaxing read for me! It gives an insight into becoming parents for the first time: all the baby shopping, lessons and everything a parent does to ensure themselves ready when the baby comes. It also shows the sleepless nights, constant feeding and how it takes a toll on new parents and how every tiny thing that happens is cherished. It captures parenthood so perfectly! The adorable comics speaks so many volumes for moms and dads! Everything about this book is picture-perfect!
Recommended: The perfect read to anyone who is expecting or has a baby and you can also read it for fun as I did!
This was a very quick read and so precious. Mcmeel does a great job of showcasing the simple everyday moments throughout a couple's pregnancy journey. I love how there's scenes which compare what the woman goes through versus the man. I've never been pregnant so I can't relate to much of what's in this book but it was very sweet to read. It seemed to me like this book put more of a lighthearted spin on the pregnancy journey but there were still some emotional moments. The artwork was very well done as well. One part I thought was funny was the evolution of the mom's sleeping style with her sleeping with more and more pillows. Overall a very cute and emotional read.
Really cute look at a family from conception to childbirth and all the awesome postpartum craziness.
It is a graphic novel tracking journey of a young couple from their conception to their life after birth of their first kid.
It is funny and touches every aspect of a pregnancy.
Artwork is simple. Just adequate to be enjoyed in a graphic novel.
Cozy relationship of couple and their mutual cooperation is heart warming to read.
It is less about baby and more about parents who struggle a lot to help propogate their family and to care for newborn.
Admirable part is focus on positive moments of pregnancy and simplicity of details.
Thanks netgalley and publisher for review copy.
*I received an eARC by the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
'Baby: A Soppy Story' portrays a young couple through their lives as they find out they are expecting their first child, the trials and joys of pregnancy, and what life is like when your little bundle comes home.
I have to preface this by saying that I have not read any of the other 'Soppy' works, but after reading this one, I would definitely Iove to. I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel! I loved the storyline and how true their emotions felt. As a mother of two myself, I found myself chuckling a few times while reading, connecting with the thoughts and feelings of the new parents. This graphic novel is cute, sweet, honest and a definite read for expecting parents or those looking for a little nostalgia over the baby years.
4/5 * Would highly recommend!
Philippa Rice follows up her love story Soppy with a new chapter chronicling the couple’s first foray into parenthood in Baby. The volume reads like a collection of newspaper dailies, with minimalist but vibrant art. The pages break down the experience of being a new parent into snapshots of moments. The structure is something more natural than forcing a single overarching narrative. These are memories made manifest in the way we recall them from our own minds. The moments when Rice chooses to exaggerate the visuals for emotional impact are great representations of how fraught these moments can be. Baby is s a delightful volume that paints a vivid picture of the ups and downs of a life-changing experience.
I loved this just as much as I enjoyed soppy! This was really cute and I don't have much to add as this isn't a graphic novel with dialogue, it focuses entirely on telling the story through graphics, which I think she did well in this. The color combo is so satisfying and just makes this nice to look at! I'd read more soppy stories in the future for sure.
I've loved everything I've read bu this illustrator, The art is so heartwarming. I was a bit hesitant of this one, but I loved it a lot. I've had some of her art from the previous book printed and using them as art, and I'm definitely thinking of buying this one and hanging some of the art in it.
A relatable and adorable collection of the moments that make up new parenthood. A wonderful gift for any parents in your life.
I loved this!! What a sweet and adorable graphic novel. I read Soppy a couple of years ago and fell in love. Baby was a great continuation on their story.
