This book was super cute! And the covers has got to be one of my favorite contemporary covers around. I loved the cultural and intellectual references, absolutely loved the writing, and found this book so easy to follow and get through. My main problem with this book (not even a very big one) is the "insta" love but other than that, definitely recommend.
Music is a huge part of my life so More Than Maybe immediately appealed to me because of its big focus on music. And it didn’t disappoint! Lots of songs and artists are given out throughout the whole book making it perfect for any fans of discovering new stuff like myself - and seeing one of my faves mentioned made me squeal just a tiny bit.
Moreover, this book depicts teenage troubles like trying to get out after high school and trying to deal with family troubles pretty well. I especially liked seeing Luke dealing with his family and going against everything his father wants him to do. But what I really enjoyed about More Than Maybe was the romance because it was absolutely adorable.
I didn’t give this book a higher rating simply because it was good but nothing out of this world or that I’ll want to re-read. It is still really good and I would def recommend though!
I was excited to read this book because the author is writing about Ann Arbor (which is the city next to mine) and she is from Michigan (where I am from). Also, because this was about two teens in love and on the cusp of going away to college and it is set around to music.
I came out enjoying the book but unable to give it any more than 3 stars.
What I think this book excels in is giving you two characters that are wanting something more than what they have. Each feeling the outsiders in their own family - both having father issues. Both using music to cope.
The story was ... well, it was really, really loose. Like all we got going for us is that we know these two people like one another but if they just would have opened up to one another about their feelings would we really need to sit through the rest of the book when it could have been resolved halfway?
Of course, you mention Ann Arbor and famous Michigan bands (Sponge!) you're gonna want to give it all the praise in the world. When you mention place that are real blended in with those that are fiction that's another nice added surprise.
Ann Arbor IS a really popular venue, and bands DO like coming to it - one of the more lowkey locations with some great places (The Ark, State, Michigan Theater). ... but having her being some blogger whose work is that great that she gets accepted for Rolling Stone? What? I was having a much harder time accepting that than the guy's father being from a retired band and ending up in Ann Arbor.
Overall, it's a cute story with an adorable set of characters but a plot that honestly doesn't go anywhere and just kind of lingers. :/
I was going to write a nice, long review of this one, but I think sometimes short and sweet is better. I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book as part of my participation in the blog tour and I loved it just as much as You’d Be Mine.
I think my favorite thing about Hahn’s books is the way she can just casually insert a ton of music references, but it never feels over-the-top. Vada and Luke dropped a lot of song titles in this book and I loved every minute of it. I was particularly happy to see a bunch of my favorites make an appearance!
A brief selection of some of my favorite songs and bands mentioned in this book:
* I Want You by Savage Garden
* Car Radio by Twenty One Pilots
* Something Corporate
* Judah & the Lion
* Green Light by Lorde
In short: I loved Vada and her blog, I loved Luke and his podcast, I loved Phil and his club, and I loved this book. I can’t wait for Never Saw You Coming.
I read the book while listening to the book's playlist at the Spotify app, and enjoyed the experience even more.
Vada & Luke are very mature youth that is passionate for they are doing, but at the same time, like keep personal things for themselves only, not everyone has to know about it.
All the characters, main and secondary, are well written, they have so many layers that get untangled bit by bit.
More Than Maybe it is a book with strong friendships and family relationships. What I like about the contemporary story is that the problems are manageable and not exaggerated. I also like that there is a representation of the LGBTQ+ community, as Luke's brother, Cullen & Zack, Luke's best friend, are in a relationship. I would love to have a book about Zack & Cullen.
Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.
This book was such a delightful little gem. I have such a soft spot for YA books that feature characters that have a passion and love for music. When I was in high school, music was my everything. It was my ultimate passion and what I lived for day to day. Reading this book was really nostalgic for me. I really felt every moment of this book so ardently.
These characters were truly something special. To say that they spoke to me would be a bit of an understatement. I was so wrapped up in these characters and I loved them so much. I loved that these characters had plenty of depth. They have so many layers and the author really brings out their complexity. I loved that the main characters had such tremendous growth in the story. This book also has an array of secondary characters that really made things interesting. I adored all the friendships and relationships in this book.
The romance in the story was very touching to me because the two main characters were so obviously perfect for each other. The romantic gesture in this book by one of the characters is just so damn romantic that it makes my heart want to burst. The two main characters are very attuned to one another. They have such beautiful chemistry and the reader can't help but root for them.
The plot of the story really came together nicely. All the ducks were lined up nicely and everything was executed perfectly in the story. The story was very addicting. I was so entranced that I read the entire book in a single sitting. I couldn't get enough. The storytelling was such a pleasure to read. I love the writing style and the author's voice.
Overall, this is an atmospheric story that was a pleasure to get lost in. I was very much impressed with this book and I cannot wait to read more from this author!
Luke and Vada? May the Force be with us.
OK, that's out of the way. I loved this book. It had a little bit of everything - 90s nostalgia, poking fun at aging rockers as well as modern hipsters, earnest yet sardonic teen journalists, and young love. I had so many vibes of things like Almost Famous and High Fidelity, just to name a couple. But what I think I liked best about this novel is how Luke and Vada, for the most part, were just allowed to LIKE each other. There were relatively few obstacles, or wacky YA novel misunderstandings/third act "we need a speedbump" conflict jolts. Instead, we just get to see each character talk about how cute and wonderful they think the other is. Sometimes, that's just what the doctor ordered.
More Than Maybe centers on two very different teens in the music world finding their way to each other. I had a lot of trouble connecting with these characters, they just didn't seem like teenagers. The writing made them see a lot more mature than I would expect them to act. I loved the plot of this book but felt that it would have worked better with older characters. I wanted to love this one but I just couldn't connect.
An overall fun read. Loved the writing style and the story line. Characters were all up to par. I enjoyed this one just as much as I have Erin Hahn's other books. I definitely recommend it to teens looking for a quick romance to read.
Such a cute romance! Building a romance through music isn't a new concept but it was well-done. If you've ever appreciated dive bar culture, you will feel at home in these pages. Many romances tend to focus 90% of the plot on the protagonists, but More Than Maybe had a great host of characters with plenty of development, even for the less-involved friends and coworkers. Vada is my absolute favorite, but really I want to be friends with the whole crew! I also loved the sub-plots involving Luke's and Vada's parents. There was some cheesiness, but it is a YA romance after all and honestly, that's why I'm here, but it was also a quality story with great characters.Thank you NetGalley, Erin Hahn, and publisher for the ARC. I really enjoyed this read, and can't wait to go buy a copy of Hahn's previous book, You'd Be Mine.
This was a really cute YA novel! I loved the blend of growing up, romance and music! Vada and Luke were adorable characters with really developed stories. The writing was great and the story flowed wonderfully. I'm excited to read more from this author.
I like that More than Maybe had developed protagonists, for the most part. I liked Vada, she was a strong character, Luke could have been fleshed out a little bit more but both overall were fairly likeable characters. I would've liked a little more conflict between the two, rather than an immediate connection, and maybe because there wasn't more conflict I felt like it went on a bit too long. I get that the focus was elsewhere, but the rest of the story's conflict didn't hold my interest for as long as it went on for. The ending was sweet and I think my favorite part.
I received an E-ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I thought that this book was so adorable. Like oh my fucking god. I couldn't get over how realistic it was when it came to their relationship of both liking each other and not knowing that the other liked them too. I loved the two main characters and the family dynamics taht are featured in this book. This book is more then just a cute contemporary, it shows different family issues and how the characters dealt with them. It was a fun read and a learning experience in a way as well. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
All I can say is wow! I devoured this book in a day and I just wanted it to keep going. This is a story about love, self exploration, forgiveness, sacrifice, and a seemingly endless playlist.
Honestly, Luke and Cullen's relationship made this book for me. I did find it hard to really understand why they were in Michigan, but overall that part had little bearing on the story. Vada is possibly the coolest female character I've read in a while. She was so grounded throughout the story both with her struggles, her hopes and dreams for her future, and her real life obstacles to making those dreams come true.
Luke and Vada are swoonworthy for sure, and I felt myself hoping for more of their relationship outside of their mutal love of music, but the music aspect was so good. I am disappointed I cannot hear some of these songs.
Overall, this was a icredibly enjoyable and adorable read.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange of an honest review.
Luke Greenly is introvert, a bit shy and definitely wants nothing to do with fame, after growing up with his punk rocker dad's celebrity. He prefers doing his podcast with his extrovert, outgoing, meddling twin brother and secretly writing and composing songs, without anyone knowing it. He loves writing, being in his own world and creating and he keeps secrets close to his heart, like composing and the crush he has for the music blogger Vada.
Vada has a five years plan. She managed to work at the Local Lizard (a bar) owned by the local legend Phil (her mother's boyfriend), she now run his music blog and she's been accepted to a prestigious music journalism program in California. And she has a huge crush for Luke, even though, until they decided to pair up for a school project, they rarely speak to each other, to shy and embarassed to do it. Slowly becoming friends and getting to know one other, both of them have to decide what to do about their feelings, wishes and desires.
More than maybe is such a cute and sweet book. Luke and Vada are amazing, funny and so awkward when they are around each other.
One of my favourite quote is:"Smooth, we are not", that pretty much summarise their relationship. They are dorky and I like their relationship very much, because they connect through music, songs, composition. I liked a lot when they text each other songs to seize their feelings or that moment. Vada has an awful relationship with her absentee father and Luke is pressured by his own, so they found a friend (and then more than a friend) in one other, being able to talk freely.
I liked a lot the side characters. Phil, the bar owner and Vada's "stepfather" (kinda) is funny and so supportive. What I loved the most are Cullen and Zack, because they are so amazing and THE relationship goal, to be honest.
They are so sweet together and I liked a lot the relationship they have with each other and with Luke. Luke and Vada are unbelievably cute and sweet and their story is really funny and cute to read.
This book is about love, first love and long love, friendship, family, desires and so much music.
This is such a cute book! I love this so much! Vada and Luke are the cutest, and I need more of them! This book is a beautiful story about these two teens who want to follow their dreams but also find love. This book felt a little like Fangirl and Radio Silence but so different! Erin Hahn did a fantastic job with this book! I love getting two POVs and getting so many details. The complexity of the characters really made me want to continue reading, as well. If you want an easy, cute, fun book to be ready, I would suggest this book!
I ended up loving this book way more than I thought I would at first glance! I was anticipating a story of music and first love but I got so much more out of it. In particular I was drawn to Vada’s relationship with her father and Phil. It left me in puddles of tears because I related to it so much!
Friends, family, fellow readers, & reviewers I am in love.
Now, now I know what you're thinking "Belle you are a serial romantic, it's just a phase." FALSE. This is the truest love guys the truest. Let me start by saying this book had me at the blurb, that's why I asked for it at NetGalley. Music is my life and I'm not just saying that. My father was a musician, I grew up at bars and band rehearsals. Melodies pump through my veins, not blood. So I connected with this book on an incredibly deep and intimate level.
Vada, can we be the best of friends? She's strong but doesn't constantly throw it in your face, it's not a showy strength but genuine. I like that she's not insanely girlie but still appreciates and good dress and can swoon over hot musicians. (what a mood right?) The author wrote her really well rounded and that's something that's hard to find in YA.
Luke, Jesus I really do love you. Like the amount of times I highlighted his parts and put into my notes about how much I loved him is insane. He had AMAZING development but still stayed true to who he really was. Him and his brother made me laugh and cry at times as well.
I loved these characters, truly all of them, even Marcus. Because they all played roles that needed to be played. They were so well written, each one was critical and well appreciated.
There is so much I want to say about this book, but truly I do not want to ramble on. So let me just say this. I loved this book because my heart connected to it in ways I haven't connected to a book in a long time. It made me miss my dad and appreciate all he did for my life in music. It wasn't some incredibly deep book but it made me feel deep emotions.
the first part of the book was a little slow for me, just ok but somehow the characters snuck in and i got behind the story and it even had me shedding a few happy tears. music, self acceptance, risk and fighting for who we are and who we want to be and who we love
