Another beautiful book from Charlotte Milner. We have already read and loved both The Bee Book and The Sea Book in our homeschool, so when I saw she had a new book coming out, I just couldn't wait to read it. The illustrations are lovely, it's full of interesting facts presented in an appropriate way for an elementary child, there was even new things that I didn't know - but none were written in such a way that my 6 year old wouldn't understand them. This was a little longer and drier as far as picture book non-fiction can go, so I would use it for a unit study doing a few pages a day and not plan to sit and read it all in one go.
Really cute bats decorate easy to digest bat facts in the style I expect from DK books. At 34, I still get a warm feeling from DK books, knowing there will be cool pictures and I would have to hunt around to make sure I read every single fact and not miss some little detail (and inevitably you would miss something, making rereading a lot of fun). It's nice to see that you can still get what you expect with kid's nonfiction and DK.
This is a bit above my 4 year old's level (the art is lovely, but the information is dense for her attention span), so I read this on my own and liked it. I also feel like I learned a lot, it's simple bits of info but never talking down to kids. I love bats and know most of this stuff but I loved things like the diagram of the wing, showing how it is their hand and that's why they are more dextrous flyers than birds. There's a lot of art of plants and fruit that are just gorgeous, used to show how bats spread seeds and pollen, so many spreads would make lovely prints.
Would definitely recommend for any child interested in bats or conservation, and for science classrooms/projects. It would be awesome for a class to make the included recipe of seed balls at the end of a lesson on bats.
I read an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley, but my opinions and review are my own.
The Bat Book is a new science based book about bats by Charlotte Milner. Due out 4th Feb 2020 from Penguin Random House on their DK imprint, it's 48 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
This is a sweet and appealing short book aimed at younger readers (k-3) with science based accessible information and illustrations about bats. The introductory sections discuss the physiology and classification of bats, along with interesting facts about behavior, socialization, ecological niche, habitats and more. The writing style is simple and positive and shows bats as fascinating creatures with a positive benefit to nature.
The book includes important information about the threats to bat habitats and why some species are in decline (and what we can do to make a difference). The art is beautifully simple and appealing. This would make a great read-along or library/classroom group activity, helping make seed balls or pollinator friendly green spaces to help the bats.
The book includes a very simple index of species pictured in the book. There are no additional links or resources included.
Beautifully made and worthwhile. Four stars.
I was given a copy of this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Bat Book is very sweet. It's organized well. The illustrations are good and it delivers the facts with a bit of light humor. For the creative and conscientious reader, there are instructions for how to make seed pods to feed bats that my son enjoyed especially.
Perfect for young zoologists.
Very informative, kid-friendly book about bats. My kids learned a lot and so did I! The format was engaging. I would add this to our home school library!
This book is absolutely outstanding. The illustrations are amazing, and there are lots of really interesting bat facts, but the author does a great job keeping the information digestible. It's simple enough for kids to read and understand, but has enough depth that almost any adult reading it will learn a lot as well. Definitely recommend this book!!
I wanted to review this book because DK was a big part of my children's education for many years in elementary and middle school.
This book lives up to the wonderful illustrations I came to expect with DK books as well as loaded in factual information for children to learn.....from where bats live, what they eat, myths about them, to how we can help them repopulate.
Excellent book!
This was such a cute and informative book. It was filled with information and facts about different kinds of bats, why they are endangered, and ways to help them. The artwork was beautiful and really helped portray how cute and important these animals are.
I will be buying this book for my Nieces when it comes out. They love bats and I think they will really like this book.
*ARC provided by Netgalley for an honest review.*
I found this to be a wonderfully informative book about bats and their importance. Younger readers will need some help reading it, as it contains a lot of words. Recommended!
The Bat Book was everything I wanted out of a children's book teaching about bats. The illustrations were eye-catching and accurate. The layout was easy to follow for my kids. The information in it was thorough without being overwhelming. Both my sons loved it.
I had absolutely no idea how crucial a part bats play in the natural world. Pest control, seed spreader, pollinator... they have some pretty important roles to play and it’s important for us to change our views on Bats and give them a hand.
We are working hard to save the turtles, save the bees, save the rainforest... I think we need to add save the bats to that ever growing list!
This is a great book. Informative and interesting without being long and boring. Kids information books can get wordy and hard to follow. The pictures and word bubbles helped this one flow nicely.
