When I started this book I was not sure I was going to be able to handle it. It starts out quite violently. A young college girl getting beaten and raped in a stairwell outside a frat party. It was horrific. But it was the beginning of a book that will give you a lot to think about.
This book sure touches on quite a few subjects. College football players getting away and even encouraged to rape young freshman girls. The girls being told it’s their fault and subsequently being forced out of the college. The sad thing is this is actually happening in colleges all across this nation and they are getting away with it. The corruption that goes into choosing players. Paying them off to come to each college. The promise of drugs and girls. I sure hope all colleges do not do this but am willing to bet almost all of them do. It definitely needs to be stopped.
Also the drug manufacturers and what is going on there. It’s a huge money making racket that some very high up people are getting rich from at the expense of us as humans who may depend on said drugs to live. Money being paid to officials to keep quiet about the side effects of dangerous drugs. It’s all for the profit not the health of the people.
Combine these two things and you have a story of a woman who was brutally raped and then years later having to face that rapist as her boss. That alone would be more than I could handle but Emma is a very strong woman. She’s already been through a lot in her life. She’s happily married and has a daughter who will soon be leaving for college. She also suffered numerous miscarriages that ripped her and her husbands hearts into. It’s a sad story in many ways but also a happy one in that they have such a strong marriage that they can endure almost anything. Aidan, Emma’s husband does not know for a long time why Emma hates Richard so much and so deeply. But when he does find out he is beside her through everything. He supports her no matter what. As he should. It took Emma a long time to face what happened after being made to feel she did something wrong and was the cause of the attack.
This book will give you many feelings. Some of hatred. Some of loss and a lot of anger. It made me cry in so many places to think about what Emma went through as a young girl starting out. She had already lost so much. But she does have a happy life twenty one years later and that is so wonderful. You will root for her and Aidan to make it. To be strong and be there for each other. For their daughter Sophie too. She plays a very important part in this story as does Emma’s roommate in college.
Most of the characters in this book are very likable. Lovable actually. But a few you will totally detest and wish bad things on so be warned. When a person is that evil you just want to see them hurting.
Thank you to #NetGalley, #ElenaMikalsen and #WildRosePress for the eARC of this book. This is my own true review of this story.
I gave it a star and a very high recommendation.. You have to read this one to believe it.
Emma was raped at college by Richard but no one believed her, including her boyfriend Jeff, so she dropped out.
Years later, happily married with a teenage daughter Sophie, she meets Richard - his company has just bought the Pharma company where she and her husband Aidan work.
Emma is distraught and tries to get her husband to leave the company but doesn’t tell him the reason why.
She becomes determined to seek revenge and drags her daughter into it which I found disturbing and a little unrealistic.
Emma finds out she is pregnant but is still hellbent on revenge.
I understood this but lost empathy for her when she didn’t seem to care at times who she dragged into her schemes.
Fast paced and well written but was a bit disappointed with the ending.
I really enjoyed this face paced read!!! Great story ... a real page turner! Thus is the second book by this author and enjoy her books immensely! Highly recommend!
I received an ARC of Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. I was quickly pulled into this story and it's characters. This thriller had me turning pages until the end.
***Spoiler alert***
I did not like how Emma involved her daughter with illegal actions and trapping Ben and this wasn't believable with the rest of the Emma's character.
Overall I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good thriller.
This is author Elena Mikalsen’s third book, and with each her prose has tightened. Here, she draws upon her experience as a psychologist. Her protagonist, college student Emma, has been raped, beaten, and left for dead by a football player. She is forced from school and spends years trying to block out the attack. Eventually she moves on, finds a loving husband, and has a high-school-aged daughter. Emma works in marketing for a pharmaceutical company. When her company is bought out by another, she learns that her new boss is her rapist. All her old feelings of despair and anger return. She vows revenge.
This emotion-packed thriller is particularly apt in light of the current #MeToo movement. Emma’s rape kit was destroyed before it could be tested. The people who were supposed to help her (her counselors, the dean, even the police) instead sweep her rape under the carpet—all so the school could build a sports complex.
Adding to the drama are Emma’s infertility and the fact that she’s never told her husband, Aidan, that she was raped. Emma’s desire for revenge endangers not only herself, but her family, and often approaches illegal methods.
Mikalsen also provides an intimate look into the world of the pharmaceutical industry. Like many of the mega-industries in American, Big Pharma is full of graft and corruption with profits made at the cost of people’s lives. As a physician myself, I found these elements accurate and they gave a sense of verisimilitude to the novel.
This book reads as a near-documentary of many of America’s current flaws.
“All the Silent Voices” was a gripping thriller that had me engaged from the beginning. I enjoyed Elena Mikalsen’s writing style and the characters that she brought to life.
This is a powerful book dealing with unpunished rape and FDA approval of dangerous drugs. The author clearly did a lot of research to write this book. I can’t begin to imagine the horror of coming face-to-face with the man who raped you 20 years ago. He will now be her boss, and wants her help to force a new drug through the FDA process, even though there are known deadly side effects. With help from friends, she both exposes the college they both attended and the drug company for their fraudulent actions. This a very suspenseful novel, and has quite a few unexpected plot twists. While this book is fiction, it is a very good perception of our society today. I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.
Another fast paced read by Elena Mikalsen. Emma has tried to rebuild her life after being raped and beaten in college. What she doesn’t expect is her assailant to reappear as her boss in the life her and her husband Aidan have built, Aidan also has zero clue about her past. This is a book I could not put down. Definitely a 5 s Star ⭐️ read!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is the story of a woman who was raped in college, by the football star. She tries to get justice, but everyone is seems is against her, and she gets blamed for the rape. And is forced to leave the school. Then, 20 years later, she’s married with a teenage daughter. Her and her husband work for a pharmaceutical company. And she soon learns that her rapist is not her boss.
This book.. it had the promise of a good story. But I just couldn’t get into it. There were parts that kept my attention and I couldn’t put it down, but then, through most of it, I had to force myself to read it. The story seemed to be all over the place. And I couldn’t get into all the pharmaceutical talk. You did feel sorry for the main character, though she makes some bad choices in her quest for revenge. And I really did enjoy the ending. It was certainly a surprise.
Emma was taped in college and nothing was done. The football player gets away with it and she is made to feel all the blame.
Twenty years later, happily married with an almost grown daughter, her life is changed. The rapist is now her boss. What lengths will Emma go to, in order for revenge/justice?
There are tons of twists and turns in this story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It matches well with reality and how some over entitled people get away with anything. The ending was spot on and very good. Thanks to Netgalley and The Wild Rose Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This was a good book. Kept my interest for the most part. Lost me a little when it got too much into the pharmaceutical world but I still stuck with it.
This is a captivating read. Thank you to net galley for the arc. It is thought provoking and has very real issues in this day and time
Rape and deception from pharmaceutical companies is only part of the story. The courage to overcome her past and to get long delayed justice is the rest of the story. I found myself pulling for Emma and all the others who have been silenced. A good story for today's world. Everyone should read this and take heed.
Wow what a fantastic book!! A victim and her rapist go toe to toe. Who will win? A woman's revenge against her rapist has her spinning out of control and putting lives in danger. This book had everything! It is suspenseful, chilling, and heartbreaking at times.
This was the first book that I have read from this author and it won't be the last.
It's a little different than other thrillers as we know what the crime is and who is the victim. W hat we don't know are details that change opinions on the characters. I went in thinking I knew the basics of the plot and how it was going to end and was prepared to really be disappointed. However the author does a great job spinning things around and changing it up!
This will not be the last book that I read by this author.
This was a fast paced, chat turn the pages fast enough kind of book
Emma was raped in college. Although no one believed her. After many years she is able to put the past behind her. She reinvents herself, marries and is living a life, until her rapist reappears and buys the company she works for.
What a wild ride and I highly recommend this book
This book was excellent. I just have discovered this offer when I saw her speaking about her book in a group on Facebook. I enjoyed her posts and decided to request the book. I'm so glad I did! This book kept me on the edge of my seat while cheering for Emma to get her own justice! Definitely can't wait to pick up another book by this author!
Thank you #netgalley for an advanced copy for review!
Katie went to a party with her good friend Shannon. Shannon introduced her to Richard and from that point on her night was a living nightmare.
Twenty some years later Katie is now known as Emma. Emma is married with a daughter who is getting ready to go off to college herself.
Emma and her husband Aiden work in the same company which is being bought out from another company and when Emma sees that the CEO is Richard she comes up with a plan to make sure Richard does not succeed in making all the money he intended to make.
There are a lot of twists you won't see coming in All the Silent Voices. Strong characters and just a all around great read. Can't wait to read more by Elena Mikalsen!
Great read! Fast paced and suspenseful. From a college rape to a drug company corruption; I couldn’t read fast enough. This authors books seem to get better with each one I read! Highly recommend if you like suspense.
All the Silent Voices was a thought provoking, topical read. The idea of someone who had such such a huge impact on Emma's life turning up as her boss was very interesting to me as a reader, and would be gut wrenching if this happened in real life.
The way the story unfolded was something that really kept me turning pages, wanting to find out what happened. I did enjoy the character of Emma and found her reactions and emotions to be very realistic.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys women's fiction and has had interest in the #MeToo movement. Thank you to the author, Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC at my request. All thoughts in this review are my own.
This fast paced thriller is quite a timely story in light of the Me Too Movement. There is much to think about here. Not only rape and assault on women but about the power of drug companies. It is BIG business and tremendous money makers. When there is that much money involved there is bound to be corruption. And this kind of corruption can be life threatening.
What if your rapist of many years ago suddenly appeared as your new boss in your workplace?
Husband and wife, Emma and Aidan Shephard are both worried about their jobs. They work for Davis & Parsons, a pharmaceutical company, and the owner is planning to sell. The buyer is Avias Global, which is set to merge with D&P. And guess what? The president of the company is Richard Stoker, Emma’s rapist, who left her suffering and dying in a cold stairwell. There is no doubt in Emma’s mind that this is the football hero who brutally attacked her at Westview, more than two decades earlier.
All she had to do was report it. After all, she had a rape kit, severe bruising and cuts as evidence. But, the powers at Westview, including the dean, dismissed Emma’s assault claims back then. She didn’t even have the support of the police force. If the football star’s reputation was damaged it would endanger the building of a multimillion dollar sports arena. That is much more important.
Not surprisingly, Emma has never shared this information with her husband, Aidan. The physical scars are gone but the mental hurt has never faded.
Now is Emma’s chance to get revenge. Emma focuses her clever plan on the new drug called Parozex, an antipsychotic drug Richard wants fast-tracked to FDA approval despite potentially fatal side effects. The side effects can easily be buried in the fine print. Who reads that stuff anyway?!
Emma looks for dirt on the new boss and uncovers a surprising link to her former college roomie, Shannon, as well as Emma’s boyfriend at Westview, Jeff.
Richard’s scheme to get Parozex fast tracked to the market is definitely unethical, but with employees scared of losing their jobs and Aidan getting chummy with Richard, convincing others won’t be easy for Emma.
Emma’s Westview story is heartbreaking. She often blames herself for Richard’s vicious assault and is psychologically incapable of using stairs, as the attack took place in a stairwell. Yet Emma is strong and she does persevere even as she stumbles. So, is it wrong when she involves her teen daughter, Sophie, for her hacking skills to dredge up info on Richard? That’s a biggie because now her daughter is in grave danger.
There’s compelling suspense, especially near the end, and surprising plot twists.
The book does highlight Emma’s triumphs, such as the support she receives from and provides for another rape survivor.
A work of fiction that reads like an all true story in our society.
