The perfect book for boredom. I love drawing and learning new ways so I loved this book and found it very helpful

A great step by step guide to drawing the cutest Manga characters and animals. I love this book as a gift for creative kids, teens or adults. You are able to design your own characters, learn about perspective, expression, positioning and more.

It is fun to use and can help you get artistic and put pencil to paper and start drawing Japanese inspired comic art.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I loved the way this book provided instructions and illustrations to follow.
This is not a step by step guide, but if you are already drawing the characters, it can help.
I am not an artist, but love to draw.
This book helped me improve my facial expressions and the symmetry of the characters.
I gave it 4 stars because it may be hard to follow for younger children, or someone not already drawing the characters.

The final two how-to-draw books ended up being by far my least favorite of the bunch. You Can Draw Manga Chibi Characters, Critters & Scenes and You Can Draw Manga Chibis are guides to drawing manga-style cartoon characters and creatures, but they are not traditional how-to-draw books in the way the others are. There are no real guides to be found here, no grids, tracing paper, or even step by step guides. Instead, you are given a few very basic images of figures with some initial guiding lines left in and not much more.

The books are filled with reference images to copy that include clothes, hairstyles, and facial expressions. The You Can Draw Manga Chibi Characters, Critters & Scenes book focuses on humans while the Chibis book includes various animals both real and imaginary, plus a section on objects such as chibi-style food and furniture. It’s all adorable, but there are no instructions on how to actually draw these things yourself, so you’re expected to simply copy.

I used these books to draw a few chibi-fied characters of my own, attempting to base them on Mulder and Scully, and while the results were OK, I felt that they could have been much better with some improved guidance.

The one big plus to these two books is that they’re available as ebooks on the Amazon Kindle store, so you won’t need to wait for delivery before you get started. If you already have some confidence in drawing then these could help you start learning a new style, but I wouldn’t recommend them for beginners.

My kids loved spending time drawing characters out of this book. Very cute characters and very easy instructions.

This was an easy to use and read book about drawing some very cute critters. My 9 year old and 15 year old had a fun time doing these step by step drawings. And of course with practice you can even make them your own! Great for the beginner and moderate drawler

When I saw this book offered up on Netgalley, I knew I needed to take a chance on it. I've wanted to learn how to draw for quite some time. The Chibi style is one of my favorite styles. I LOVE anything chibi, so I figured this one would be great to help me explore if this is a style I would enjoy drawing in.

The book itself is outlined well, but I do wish it had more instructions. The body instructions were helpful, but I would have loved to have more detailed instructions on drawing the outfits & expressions. I felt like there was a disservice to readers by showing the types of outfits & not how to draw the outfit. The same can be said with the eyes. I found that I struggled a lot with drawing the eyes. A detailed how-to would have been extremely helpful.

All in all, this book helped learn some of the basics of drawing Chibi style characters & critters. I would have loved to have more instructions on the outfits & expressions, but I did find it useful.

You Can Draw Manga Chibi Characters, Critters & Scenes is a tutorial style book for manga chibi characters, animals, and scenes. Due out 3rd March 2020 from Quarto on their Walter Foster Jr imprint, it's 96 pages and will be available in paperback format.
I love to draw and doodle. Despite not being super advanced and skillful yet, I find drawing very relaxing most of the time. This is an accessible guide full of techniques and cheerful upbeat advice. The drawing style itself is completely adorable (chibi ちび translates to 'little'). They're big eyed and round faced with tiny hands.

This guide has an accessible and appealing format. A short introduction is followed by tools and supplies, basic techniques, some color theory, and then the individual drawing tutorials. The authors do a good job of explaining (and showing) proportions for different ages, positions, action and movement, etc. The authors have also included a number of templates at the end of the book which can be photocopied and used to improve consistency in drawing and proportion.

Great selection for a gift for a young artist, perhaps with some added sketch pads and pencils. This would also make a superlative classroom or library book.I would also recommend this book to babysitters, grandparents, parents, and basically anyone who spends a fair bit of time with small kids in order to up their 'draw with me' game. I really enjoyed this. I will use these to decorate journals and notes for friends. I see some chibi style science stuff in my future (chibi microscope, chibi lab, chibi test tubes)!

Four stars. Fun collection.

I really enjoyed this book. The authors break everything down so that anyone who wants to draw feels like they have the power to do so. The author discuss basic techniques and info about tools and colors. Then you are walked through drawing the characters as well as cute chibi creatures. The authors also talk you through details just as accessories, props, and backgrounds leading you through a wholistic drawing process.
I would recommend anyone who is interested in drawing chibis.

While I'm not sure you can really call this step by step, it is a delightful, fun, entertaining way to pass time and learn to draw Chibi!! I love Chibi and everything to do with chibi. This goes beyond just chibi characters which is really nice and includes furniture, pets, clothing, props, scenes, and templates so you can make your own chibi. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I requested and received an advanced reading copy of this book from NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

I would not call this a step-by-step guide for learning to draw manga chibi characters, as most drawings only had a few steps. Even though it was not step-by-step, I did find this book helpful. I like the explanation of “what makes it a chibi”, they are basic instructions, but it gives you a good idea of how to turn any character into a chibi.

I really like the templates provided at the back of the book; you can photocopy them and practice adding facial expressions and completing the images. It also gives you the opportunity to practice drawing the basic shapes using a light box and tracing. I think with a lot of practice (my skill level is pretty low) this book would enable me to draw chibi characters.

At the same time I got this book, I got another by the authors (You Can Daw Manga Chibis). I would rate them both 4 stars but this one is more like 4 1/2 stars while the other book is a low 4.

This book is far more useful as it contains the basic info in that other book + info for chibi animals too. Neither is what I would call step by step, as the projects tend to have 2-4 steps for the whole figures and those tend to be the only things in the book with step-by-step instructions. Most of the figures and additions items have a sentence explaining the basics. It definitely helps to have some basic drawing skill before tacking this one. There are a lot of templates for assisting you with the figure shapes. Everything in the book is super cute!

I already own a few of books in that depratment of chibi drawing and this is another one I'd add to my collection. I know it's intended for kids but if you're new to drawing this sort of thing, this book would be perfect for you. It's simple and easy steps, with templates to trace or copy and try for yourself and it has a lot of extra features like clothes, props, food and all that stuff and it shows you chibi versions of different ages from babies to grandparents. You also get the extra section of animals to try out and that's always a plus. I like the simplicity of chibis and I will probably definitely buy this book to add to my collection and to try out again. I could just draw a simple character or animal for my bullet journal and try to improve from there on. What this book also gives you what I haven't seen in other ones I own, is that in the beginning you'll get a bit of colour study and what colours you get if you mix them and all that and I find this a very crucual feat to have when you get into art.

So, with that said, if you are new to drawing or if you have children who like to get into it, this book would be perfect for that. It's simple, easy and quick and you could draw those chibi characters in no time if you keep on practicing it.

This is such a great book for those (like myself) that want to draw Chibi characters. There is a TON of inspiration, ideas, and techniques. There are a few step by step characters but I found they didn't have enough steps and jumped over too much between steps. I wish there were a few more steps so I could really see what was changing and I would have loved to have even more characters to follow and practice. I love they not only included people but animals and props as well. They gave the basics for people but then gave inspiration for clothing so you can really make the characters your own.

I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

I enjoyed this one I have looked at and tried to follow a lot of different art books before none were as easy to follow as this one. I love how all of the different components are broken down and shown even the different emotions. The beginning of the book also goes over some materials and drawing basics which I think is very useful. I can’t wait to draw more of these cute chibi characters and settings.

My daughter is very into learning how to draw. She asked me to request the Chibi You Can Draw Books. I thought the book really broke things down for children who are learning how to draw. The technique is more complicated, and I would not recommend this You Can Draw Book for younger children.

The best-fit age group for this You Can Draw Series would be upper elementary and middle school. The characters are complex, and the instructions require a lot of investigation/inferencing. There are many steps between each picture that the drawers are going to have to notice and apply independently.

Absolutely fantastic book if you love Manga characters you will love the Chibi characters. They are absolutely so cute everything that makes a Manga character awesome is even more amazing as a Chibi. This insightful book is very detailed and informative as well as having beautiful artwork. I can’t say enough about it. This is a must have book for anyone who enjoys Manga art. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
