Absolutely fantastic book if you love Manga characters you will love the Chibi characters. They are absolutely so cute everything that makes a Manga character awesome is even more amazing as a Chibi. This insightful book is very detailed and informative as well as having beautiful artwork. I can’t say enough about it. This is a must have book for anyone who enjoys Manga art. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
My daughter is very into learning how to draw. She asked me to request the Chibi You Can Draw Books. I thought the book really broke things down for children who are learning how to draw. The technique is more complicated, and I would not recommend this You Can Draw Book for younger children.
The best-fit age group for this You Can Draw Series would be upper elementary and middle school. The characters are complex, and the instructions require a lot of investigation/inferencing. There are many steps between each picture that the drawers are going to have to notice and apply independently.
I requested and received an advanced reading copy of this book from NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
I would not call this a step-by-step guide for learning to draw manga chibi characters, as most drawings only had a few steps. Even though it was not step-by-step, I did find this book helpful. I like the explanation of “what makes it a chibi”, they are basic instructions, but it gives you a good idea of how to turn any character into a chibi.
I really like the templates provided at the back of the book; you can photocopy them and practice adding facial expressions and completing the images. It also gives you the opportunity to practice drawing the basic shapes using a light box and tracing. I think with a lot of practice (my skill level is pretty low) this book would enable me to draw chibi characters.

At the same time I got this book, I got another by the authors (You Can Daw Manga Chibis). I would rate them both 4 stars but this one is more like 4 1/2 stars while the other book is a low 4.
This book is far more useful as it contains the basic info in that other book + info for chibi animals too. Neither is what I would call step by step, as the projects tend to have 2-4 steps for the whole figures and those tend to be the only things in the book with step-by-step instructions. Most of the figures and additions items have a sentence explaining the basics. It definitely helps to have some basic drawing skill before tacking this one. There are a lot of templates for assisting you with the figure shapes. Everything in the book is super cute!
I already own a few of books in that depratment of chibi drawing and this is another one I'd add to my collection. I know it's intended for kids but if you're new to drawing this sort of thing, this book would be perfect for you. It's simple and easy steps, with templates to trace or copy and try for yourself and it has a lot of extra features like clothes, props, food and all that stuff and it shows you chibi versions of different ages from babies to grandparents. You also get the extra section of animals to try out and that's always a plus. I like the simplicity of chibis and I will probably definitely buy this book to add to my collection and to try out again. I could just draw a simple character or animal for my bullet journal and try to improve from there on. What this book also gives you what I haven't seen in other ones I own, is that in the beginning you'll get a bit of colour study and what colours you get if you mix them and all that and I find this a very crucual feat to have when you get into art.
So, with that said, if you are new to drawing or if you have children who like to get into it, this book would be perfect for that. It's simple, easy and quick and you could draw those chibi characters in no time if you keep on practicing it.
This is such a great book for those (like myself) that want to draw Chibi characters. There is a TON of inspiration, ideas, and techniques. There are a few step by step characters but I found they didn't have enough steps and jumped over too much between steps. I wish there were a few more steps so I could really see what was changing and I would have loved to have even more characters to follow and practice. I love they not only included people but animals and props as well. They gave the basics for people but then gave inspiration for clothing so you can really make the characters your own.
I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed this one I have looked at and tried to follow a lot of different art books before none were as easy to follow as this one. I love how all of the different components are broken down and shown even the different emotions. The beginning of the book also goes over some materials and drawing basics which I think is very useful. I can’t wait to draw more of these cute chibi characters and settings.
