4.5 Stars!! I loved this book! I loved the chemistry between Emmy Danvers & Alex Harland! I highly recommend this book and this series! The banter between the 2 main characters had me smiling the whole time while reading! Loved it!
*I received this book at no charge from the publisher and I voluntarily left a review.*
I loved this book.i enjoyed the twist on the typical regency romance with the heroine being involved in the Thea very underworld. Added some action I definitely appreciated to an already wonderful story that was excellently written.
Verity an illegitimate daughter of an earl has taken care of her little sister for almost 20 years and when she loses her job she desperately goes into the sewers of London to find the lost Earl. But he finds her instead and saves her. He wants to be left alone, she wants his story so she can get her job back. But things backfire for Verity and she not only angers Malcom the earl but also piques his interest. As she entwined herself into his life it seems he dislikes her but there is a fine line between love and hate and the tightrope they walk is dangerous but oh so tantalizing. Voluntary review of complimentary copy.
The publisher and Netgalley provided me with an ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review.
Emmeline Danvers is not the sort of girl to make an entrance. Her obscurity is a shield against her secret identity, and she keeps it wrapped around her. A masquerade ball offers her the perfect opportunity to claim a kiss from the man she has always wanted.
But the magical kiss in the moonlit garden quickly escalates. And Alex Harland and Emmy Danvers are unexpectedly drawn together by forces beyond their control. But Emmy has an assignation and Alex leaves for the battlefield.
Four years later they meet again. The memories of that kiss have filled their dreams. Alex is desperate to find the woman that ensnared him, and finally realizes that the elusive, beguiling woman from the garden is Emmy.
But they are no longer star-crossed strangers in a garden. Now they are bitter enemies, on opposing sides of a criminal divide. As the stakes become higher, their passion becomes undeniable.
I adored this enemies to lovers story. The dialogue was rapid-fire, whip-smart and infused with fire. The plot was original, fully fleshed out and believable. The characters were mature, unique and realistic. And most importantly the love story unfolded with exquisite detail. It was tender, triumphant and unforgettable.
I didn't really like this book, first of all because it was, in my opinion, way to similar to the other book by kate Bateman whose title is To Steal a Heart (Secrets and Spies, #1), furthermore I found Alex and Emmy totally boring. I was looking for the pieces of the Story where Sally and the Granny were involved to have a little bit of fun. Pity, because I liked the first one in this series.....
THANKS NETGALLEY FOR THE PREVIEW!
I received an ARC from the publisher, but this review is my own. I really enjoyed this story. I recommend reading the first in the series as it sets up the world and (importantly) the three main characters in this series.
"The daughter of a thief, Emmy learned long ago how to keep her secrets safeguarded—and, as the notorious Nightjar, her love for Alex Harland is one of them. With the determined earl hot on her trail—and making her hot under the collar—Emmy has no choice but to keep her distance. But when a moment’s danger threatens Emmy’s life as well as her name, will Alex finally discover that he’s followed every clue…to true love?"
I really liked the various twists and turns that this story took - and the conflict that Alex deals with throughout the story. I highly recommend this story.
Good fun story with twists ,turns, suspense ,mystery, and romance
Like Alex and Emma great emotions and tension between them.
Enjoyed reading.

This was a very entertaining story, a bit of enemies to friends vibe since he was an officer of the law and she was a thief. The story has an interesting back story which makes her activities seem a bit justified but he is a straight laced officer of the law .... at least is was until he met her which is giving him some serious inner turmoil.
The story has a couple of twists and some funny moments but the real thrust of the story is the struggle between the two of them to try not to like the other. It is done well and I have to say I read the premise and thought I was not really going to care for this book but it fell just barely short of a 5 Star rating but I will be awaiting the next (last?) book in this series since it has the usual "I am never getting married" hero .
Bottom Line: A really good book for a weekend you can kick back and enjoy
What a wonderful addition to the BowStreet Bachelors series! I thoroughly enjoyed the witty banter between Alex and Emmy as he pursues the Nightjar and she taunts him on his failure to outwit the thief. Their chemistry is fiery and their battle of words and whits entertaining. I was intrigued as I watched the struggle of morality vs. emotions unfold in each of them. I certainly hope that the third bachelor, Seb, gets to tell his story soon.
This is my honest review of this advance reader copy and I have not been compensated in any way
Historical romance, a little different from the run of the mill, but still very predictable. A handsome hero, beautiful heroine and love that doesn't run smoothly.
This was a solid 4 star read for me. At the beginning of the story, I had a moment of 'meh' when I read the heroine's motivation for picking up her father's mantle. My logical brain was like, 'you aren't accountable for your Dad's mess. Report the threat and live happily ever after.' But, I decided to roll with it and I'm so glad I did. The story is wonderful. I devoured it in one day. Bateman does a brilliant job of wrapping atmospheric elements into the story, her gem history is dead-on and sprinkled throughout just enough to be fascinating without reading like an un-asked-for history lesson.
This is one I'll be recommending to people.
Couldn’t get into it, seemed very obvious from the beginning and lacked nuance. Told rather than showed.
To Catch an Earl is a great addition to the Bow Street Bachelor series! Emmy and Alex play a great game of cat and mouse throughout. I loved that they were so attuned to each other. Their hearts seemed to trust each other even when their minds said not to. I loved these two. They may be two of my favorite characters. Both have dreamed and yearned for the other for years.
Emmy unwillingly took over the role of Nightjar thief due to being blackmailed. Alex as a Bow Street investigator is looking to apprehend Nightjar. One of the parts that was so endearing was scent issue that adds that romantic touch missing in a lot of romances. This may be Bateman’s best so far!
One of my 2020 reading resolutions was to read less historical romance books because I was tired of reading the same story over and over again. But when I read the premise of this book I couldn't help myself and requested it and now I'm really glad I did.
So this is a enemies to lovers/second chance romance and I enjoyed it immensely. I loved it, I'm not going to lie I skimmed some parts and the plot was a bit unrealistic at times but the romance and THE CHEMISTRY between the main leads were so good that I couldn't care less.
"He loved her strength, her bravery, her quick wit. He loved catching her eye in a shared joke across the room, the way they seemed able to engage in silent communication. He appreciated her humor, and even the quiet moments, holding her in the darkness, just standing next to her without speaking. She engaged his mind. His heart."
I loved it, Emmy and Harlan, their banter and witty comments, the sexy times but most of all I loved the tenderness of their interactions. You can feel their love and how the GET the other and it's definitely more than just lust, it's love.
Harlan was you know romance heroes when they're in love but they don't want to admit it so they search for a completely logical explanation for why they want to marry the heroine? he was like that, and I loved the bromance he had with his friends and how they always told him if he was being an idiot (which he was most of the time) BUT he was an endearing idiot. I loved him.
And Emmy, my sweet girl, I loved her!. She was a good girl (and a virgin) but without being too naive.
If you love enemies to lovers, grumpy heroes and sunshine heroines, this book is for you. A must read for "enemies to lovers" LOVERS!
The premise is wonderful. A thief and the Earl. Yet somehow Alex and Emmy don't have the necessary spark to take this story to the next level. There is a phrase used around the sense of inevitability but I didn't feel it myself. It felt more "paint by numbers" if you will. However this could just be my inability to connect to the characters.
Entertaining and creative storyline that draws you in and keeps you there. The characters are engaging and captivating you almost feel the you are there in the middle of their story. If you like Historical fiction you’ll love this book. This is a new to me author and alls I can say is I’m hooked can’t wait to read what they write next.
A member of the Tricorn Club, Alex Harland is working for Bow Street investigating the robberies of jewelry in London. The thief known as Nightjar always leaves a black feather and is leading him on a mad chase. The scent of a specific perfume on the feathers, leads Alex to Emmy Danvers. A cat and mouse game ensues between Alex and Emmy, until she reveals that it's a blackmailer who is forcing her to commit the robberies. When Alex realizes that he must protect Emmy at any cost, he can think of only one solution. An engaging, sexually charged game in pursuit of a thief. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Loved it. Absolutely loved it.
Great plot and great heroine; and my experience with HRs has taught me that it's way more difficult to find a very well characterised heroine than a hero. So very well done with this one.
I have a soft spot for heroines who are very strong, independent, intelligent and brave, and yes, I know the independent part can be anachronistic, but I frankly don't care that much about that when I read HRs. On top of that, if you give me a story where the heroine outsmarts the hero then, I am sold;
I mean, the note that Nightjar left on a meteorite for the hero (who at that point was still investigating the thief's identity) following another succesful theft was hilarious:
<i>"Specimen: Meltonium Harlandii
Locale: London and its environs.
Defining characteristics: Inert. Dull in appearance. Particularly dense. No practical uses. Almost worthless."</i>
Oh of course I also liked the hero, a lot. But I especially liked his interactions and feelings for the heroine. This romance is HOT by the way.
I really enjoyed this book. Although a romance with the inevitable conclusion, the tale was told in a very unusual and entertaining way. Well written and with good strong characters, I’d recommend this book for any lover of regency romance.
I thought this was a fun read....after all, how many heroines do you know that can steal royal jewels from places that are deemed non-penetrable?! She's a jewel thief and he's a Bow Street agent so be prepared for the exciting cat and mouse game they play with each other!
I loved Emmy's character, she's so daring and loving. Even though she has no wish to be a jewel thief like her father was, she's forced into it by a blackmailer. Find the rest of the royal jewels from France or her family will suffer. Alex, on the job to find the thief, doesn't take long to realize who the thief is and that's when his problems really start! Protect Emmy or turn her in....
