Using the trope enemies to lovers, or adversaries to partners, Bateman crafts a story about a jewel thief and the Bow Street runner assigned to capture her. A light-hearted pursuit ensues to the frustrated delight of both who have memories of a passionate meeting at a masquerade ball four years earlier. If you’ve had a moment with a predatory law enforcement officer during an arrest, fair warning that some scenes may disturb you. Still, the pursuit results in an HEA as the couple wed at the end. If you’re one of the many millions of fans of romance, you should delight in this steamy and original tale.
To Catch an Earl is part Cinderella but mostly the Scarlet Pimpernel. However I could not get past an initial problem. During their first dance we see only the very beginning and then the scene is cut to the end of the dance. The middle of the dance should have been where their witty repartee showed her off and made us believe they they could fall in love with each other at fiords the glance. Subsequently I found other dropped scenes. I could never identify with either character - they just never seemed real to me. I was disappointed by this book and would not recommend this book to my patrons.
Oh, how I enjoyed this book...a thief not of her making...and the man who is determined to track her down. It was delicious
To Catch An Earl is a magnificent historical romance by Kate Bateman. Ms. Bateman has once again amazed me with this spectacular, well-written book. Folks, you're going to love these characters! Emmy is a thief, trained by her father, the Nightjar. After her father's death her family is now being forced to steal the missing gems of the French crown jewels. Alex is a former soldier, now titled and doing work for Bow Street and his new assignment is to find the thief. Alex and Emmy's story is loaded with drama, humor, sexy bits, action and suspense. Once started I couldn't put this book down. I loved it and can't wait for my next book by Kate Bateman. To Catch An Earl is book 2 of the Bow Street Bachelors but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed This Earl of Mine and the characters Kate Bateman created in her Bow Street Bachelors series. Book two, To Catch an Earl, is also a compelling and well written story with fully developed characters. I especially liked Alex’s camaraderie with Seb and Emmy’s bonds with her family. These elements seemed genuine and real.
Emmy is being coerced to take up her father’s goal of collecting the jewels that were stolen from a French crown. His intention was to be patriotic and restore them to the French people. But her creative heists put Emmy directly in the crosshairs of Bow Street agent Alex Harland who has been tasked with finding the jewel thief known as the Nightjar (a nocturnal bird).
Trying to outwit each other and stay one step ahead creates witty exchanges as a cat and mouse game ensues. That is until someone commits murder in the name of the Nightjar, then all bets are off.
Adding to the dynamic between Alex and Emmy is a meeting between the two prior to Alex leaving for war four years earlier. He was captivated by a woman at a masked ball. She is “the one who got away” and he is still searching for this masked woman whose fragrance continues to linger in his heart.
I cannot wait for Seb’s book. I am eager to meet the woman who forces him to reconsider his no marriage vow, as he makes it clear that no woman is worth the aggravation.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC
I received an ARC of "To Catch an Earl" from Netgalley. This is the second book in Kate Bateman's new series of the Bow Street Bachelors. Alex Harland, Earl of Melton, works for the Bow Street Runners and is co-owner of the Tricorn Club. Emmy Danvers is a smart, sweet young lady, and the lady of his dreams, but she is also a thief, who Alex is looking for and who is known as the Nightjar. He learns of her deception and is caught between duty and love. His frustration is viable. Their attraction is inevitable. Kate Bateman brought me to tears towards the end....a sign that she truly had me completely engaged with the characters. Spectacular!
I really enjoyed this one - and the premise was so much fun. Emmy a jewel thief and Alex a Bow Street Runner aren't an ideal couple for a million reasons, the most apparent being that she is his number one most wanted. I thought Bowman created some amazing chemistry between Alex and Emmy and I really loved the back and forth/cat and mouse game that was happening throughout.
I'm very excited for the next in the series from Bowman!
Definitely a must-read author for me.
Thank you for the early copy in exchange for my thoughts!
To Catch An Earl is the second standalone in Kate Bateman's Bow Street Bachelors series, and it was an intriguing read.
Emmy Danvers and Alex Harland were such a fun couple. They shared excellent banter and knew just how to challenge each other and push each other's buttons. They were seemingly adversaries, but they sensed such rightness and content in the other person's presence, and I was curious to find out how they would resolve everything between them.
Their chemistry was definitely heated and I enjoyed the build up. I also enjoyed the secondary characters in the book, especially Emmy's family and Seb. I can't wait to see what's going to happen with the final member of the bachelor trio.

"Don't cry. Just stay yes. Say yes because you love me. As much as I love you."
A notorious jewel thief and a member of the Bow Street Bachelors proves to be an unlikely pair. But, after a masked dance and a kiss in the moonlight years before, neither one of them has been able to shake the feeling that their perfect match is out there somewhere. Once her true identity is discovered, will their lust turned to love be enough to bridge the gap of them being on opposite sides of the law?
I enjoyed the storyline of the jewel thief and the lawman. However, I would not categorize this as a Regency-era love story. If you are looking for a thrilling sort of adventure loosely based in a Regency world, this could be a great choice. There was lots of adventure and twists and turns throughout the story. I found it to be quick and easy to read if you are looking for a fast-paced romance without much Regency flair.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's press for the advance reader copy of To Catch An Earl. All opinions are my own.
Just loved it! Emmy is a strong, smart woman, stuck stealing to protect her family. Alex is a war hero, gambling hell owner and Bow Street Runner. Their adventure is fast, fun and furious!
Kate Bateman knows how to grab your attention from the start and keep it through the whole book. Intrigue, mystery, romance, humor, and family honor combine to make a fast moving story with delightful characters.
A fair second book in the series. The writing is great... The romance and heat were on fire. My problem with this is the ethical relationship. She's a thief... He's a Bow Street agent. Because of this, it started very slow for me because I kept trying to figure out how the author would make it work. She did but I was still bothered by it. However I will still look for the next one in this series.
Thank you to the author and publisher for providing my copy via Netgalley.
Similar to the first book in the series, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of substance there was for being a Regency romance. Emmy has principles and reasons for why she’s stealing the jewels and why she was unwilling to give it all up. I don’t read too many romances even though I enjoy the Regency era, mostly mysteries, usually because I find the actual plot super boring or totally unbelievable but I really did enjoy this!
This was a fun, fast read. Both main characters were clever and interesting. There was a great mix of romance and adventure. I really enjoyed the story!
I loved the chemistry between Alex and Emmy! She’s a bold jewel thief who is always one step ahead of Alex. They both struggle with choosing between honor and love. I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.
I am not sure why but through most of this book I kept thinking of The Thomas Crown Affair... maybe I was wishing for a little bit more of it.
The story about a heroine being a master thief and our hero out to get her was pretty intriguing at the beginning, I was pretty excited to start reading Alex and Emmy’s story. Their first meeting at the masquerade was interesting, their chemistry was pretty good. I had really high hopes and then somewhere along the way I’m not sure what happened.
I think our hero discovering right away that she was the thief he was after took some of the excitement out. Their chemistry lost some of its spark. The supporting actors where not as fun as the previous book. It wasn’t a horrible read, it just lacked some excitement and the thrill of a new blooming romance.
I was pretty impressed by Emmy’s skills as a thief. I had to give her extra points for being able to hide inside a sarcophagus. That’s enough to freak anyone out, but she managed really well.
It wasn’t entirely a bad story, it was just missing something that made you want to sigh and keep wanting to turn the page.
I did not know what to expect from this book when I first started reading it. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. This book has steamy romance and you can feel the chemistry between Alex and Emmy from their first encounter. This book had romance, passion and adventure. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves romance!
Emmy is in love with Alex, Earl of Melton, but her criminal back ground forbids her to come forward with her love. She steals a kiss at a masquerade ball, and during his following years at war he can not forget the mysterious stranger.
Back in London we works as a bow street runner, and his new assignment is to catch the Nightjar, a jewel thief. Who is no other than Emmy, and he is coming dangerously close to the truth while he reluctantly falls in love with her.
Fabulous, just fabulous! Funny in places and steamy in others. Lots to love in this one. I had a hard time putting it down. I just had to know what happened next. Loved it!
This book is delightful. I was rather unproductive until I finished it. The characters are fun and have great chemistry. There is an honorable thief and an equally honorable Bow Street Runner/Earl. This books is both steamy and sweet and well worth your time.
