Wide selection of recipes catering to many different diets, but nothing really unique about the book itself. It's a good basis for young cooks who don't really know what they (and their friends) like, but if you already know what you like pick a book on that instead.

This book is an essential purchase as a gift for anyone going off to college/university or even moving into their first home and being uncertain in the kitchen.

The chapter divisions are so practical and flow into each other.
I especially liked the fact that the author gets down to basics and explains everything plainly and simply.
The chapter on meals for dates and special occasions brought a smile to my face.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me the chance to read this book.

Made with easy to get ingredients and instructions on how to make in tight college confines, this book is a must for all the students who want to skip the dining hall mess.

Although I’m neither a novice cook nor a college student I thought this was a great cookbook. It’s definitely geared toward someone on their own for the first time, with plenty of helpful hints on tools, pantry staples and methods. The directions were clear and concise and had some great advice.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this cookbook. My son is going to college in the fall and has recently been learning to cook a little more. The recipes are simple and yet come off looking a little higher end than you’d expect for a college kid. With simple instructions and colourful pictures I can absolutely say that this would be a great addition to any care package you’re sending to your teen.

As a college student The Everything College Cookbook was exactly what I need on my book shelf. It has so many recipes that are cheap, quick, and easy to make. Although I won't be returning to campus in the fall, I look forward to preparing my arsenal of easy meals to make!

The Everything College Cookbook, 2nd Edition is a reformat and update of the first edition by Emma Lumsford. Originally published in 2005, the 2nd Ed. is due out 4th Aug 2020 from Simon & Schuster on their Adams Media imprint as part of the Everything series. It's 304 pages (print edition) and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

The recipes are arranged thematically, an introduction with general directions for prep-work and the challenges of working in a small space with limited tools is followed by chapters for breakfast, lunch, snacks, recipes utilizing special equipment (Instant Pot, microwave, air fryer, slow cooker), bowls, party food, vegan, date food, parent visits, and desserts. There's also a chapter with tips for leftovers. Each of the recipes includes an introductory description, ingredients listed in a bullet point sidebar (US measurements only, no metric equivalents), and step by step instructions. Nutritional info is included in a text box. Variations and alternatives are provided in sidebars at the end of the recipes. There is a metric conversion table at the back of the book.

Most of the ingredients should be available at any well stocked grocery store although some might need to be sourced at specialist (vegan/gourmet) grocers.

My main quibble with the book is that the recipes are mostly not photographed. There are some photos, and they're clear and attractive, but they only represent about 5% of the recipes included in the book. It is, however, a very well written book full of budget friendly (mostly) healthy foods in a wide variety of styles.

Four and a half stars. I've rounded up for the quality of the writing and the distinctly high quality of the recipes themselves (tasty!) and the mission of the book: high quality food with a budget friendly price tag. Good food shouldn't be ruinously expensive or difficult.
Although aimed at college students, this would also make a superlative choice for a young person living alone for the first time to provide a real and healthy alternative to takeaway and fast food.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

This is a great cookbook for any new cook or even a seasoned one. The first chapter goes over some of the basics for cooking such as common cooking supplies, different types of cooking (oven vs. stove top), kitchen staples, and useful cooking tips. The recipes are organized by breakfast, lunch, snacks, recipes that need special devices, leftovers, bowl meals, party food and more. Recipes are denoted to inform us whether the recipes are vegetarian, vegan, ketogenic diet, gluten-free, dairy-free, or paleo diet. All recipes come with nutritional information. I wish there were more pictures of the recipes, but otherwise I loved this cookbook.

I'll be cooking for myself for the first time this coming year and this cookbook is certainly going to come in handy! There are so many amazing recipes that I'm looking forward to trying (especially breakfast recipes as I'm typically not a breakfast person). Learning to cook is intimidating but Lunsford offers so much helpful information on the basics of cooking and being in the kitchen that anyone can learn to make something from the cookbook!!

This is THE cookbook for college students! There are so many possibilities and I was very impressed. I'm not in college anymore but I'm always looking for some quick and easy to make recipes and I found this book very helpful. I could really make 85% of the recipes in this book, and trust me, there are lots and lots of great ones! The book is organized by when you would want to make those recipes, for example: Breakfast, Lunch, snacks on the go, party food, recipes for when the parents come over or when your date comes over. There are also some vegetarian and vegan options and some desserts at the end. Great book!

I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review

This cookbook has a wide variety of recipes that college students and anyone who wants quick and easy recipes should appreciate. I like that some recipes are 1 serving, which is all you really want sometimes, but others are 2 or more for sharing or when you'd like leftovers. There's everything from breakfast, solo meals, date meals, party food, and loads more. I wish there were more pictures but overall a good collection of recipes geared towards college students.

Emma Lunsford has created a very straightforward set of recipes that really do cover EVERYTHING. Whichever student ends up with a copy will not only be able to feed themselves, but will also be able to host a dinner party or rule a movie night. There were a few recipes I adored, like the Keto Egg Quiches and the simple Pancake and Crepes recipes.

The recipes are very simple, with the ingredient list often longer than the directions. A lo of the recipes are also geared towards being vegan or suitable for a Keto diet, which may be useful for some students. Lunsford's writing is clear and her first chapter on kitchen requirements, prepping etc. are also useful. I would have liked a few more photos of the finished products, but as many of the recipes are straightforward this isn't always necessary.

I did struggle with the measurements in cups, simply because the conversion is more difficult for me than it should be. However, I will definitely save a few of these recipes for the future, even if I'm no longer a student.

Many college students have little or no experience in the kitchen, and need a good primer to help them through. The Everything College Cookbook, 2nd Edition: 300 Easy and Budget-Friendly Recipes for Beginner Cooks, by Emma Lunsford, is a great cookbook filled with not only easy, cheap recipes, but also cooking basics that everyone who spends time in the kitchen should be familiar with. Everyone knows college students who live on ramen, mac and cheese, and other unhealthy and unsavory foods, and that diet certainly doesn’t help them do well in school.

One early chapter in this cookbook, Stocking the kitchen, is excellent. It gives not only lists of kitchen gadgets and pans needed, but also basic ingredients such as flour, sugar, and spices that belong on the shelf. Any college student that follows Lunsford’s advice will easily have a well-stocked kitchen with everything needed to make foods that are easy, yet satisfying and taste good.

This cookbook teaches basics: eggs, cereals, and basic sandwiches such as grilled cheese and BLT. There is a good hummus recipe, and a recipe for baked pita chips, which is trendy and healthy. Also included are baked regular and sweet potatoes, lots of salads and sandwiches, and soups which seem to be the foods of choice for college students. The recipes are appetizing and appealing for everyone, actually, from beginning cooks to busy cooks, to older kids home after school. The recipes aren’t fancy or gourmet, just foods that appeal to the younger set and those who like to eat simply. There is an excellent chapter on snacks, which will certainly appeal to studying college students, and the dinner options are popular dishes like spaghetti, chicken tenders, fried rice, and quick pasta. This cookbook even has Keto options as well as gluten-free and dairy-free, and a chapter using trendy appliances like slow cookers, Instant Pots, air fryers, and the microwave. Bowl dinners are trendy, and this book has a dozen or so. There is a chapter on party food and a chapter on vegetarian. You just can’t go wrong.

The only thing missing is photographs. While there are a few, there aren’t photos of every recipe, Most beginning (and seasoned) cooks like to know what the dish they are making should look like.

Lunsford has done an excellent job on this book. There are dozens of recipes that are appealing, and almost everyone will find something in this book that not only teaches them skills, but gets them fed.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

I haven't had the pleasure to read the first of this cookbook, but I'm very glad to have had access to this 2nd edition. This cookbook has everything one can need when moving out. I don't think this only applies to college, but for all the youngsters out there who's leaving the nest, so to speak. I know I would have definitely have benefited from a detailed cookbook such as this.
It has easy and cheap recipes, good step-by-step instructions, great advice and descriptions and some very useful charts.
Very useful cookbook, all in all!
