I’m not a college student, and if you are one or not, I’d recommend this cook book.
I found that cookbooks for that group always have good, easy and cheap meal ideas! So that’s why I read them.
And this one had many delicious ones! The recipes were easy and clear in their directions. From breakfast to dessert, there’s something for everyone.
"The Everything College Cookbook" offers a lot of easy to cook recipes that I'm definitely going to try. The ingredients are all easy to get and the meals look easy and quick enough to prepare.
This book contains not only a lot of good information, but bright pictures and delicious recipes. There are specialty recipes for those who are gluten free, paleo, vegetarian, and more. The recipes are easy to follow and with ingredients you can find in most grocery stores. There are even recipes specifically for microwave, InstaPot, slow cookers, air fryers, etc.
What I liked: I especially liked the front section with descriptions of the tools you need to cook with. I’d like to have seen a few pictures here as some raw beginners have no clue what a “whisk” is and a picture might have helped. And the glossary of cooking terms at the end is clear and informative. Overall, nicely done.
Recommendation: I’d definitely pick this up for anyone going off on their own for the first time—whether to college or something else. Some of the recipes looked so inviting, I might even add it to my collection and I’ve been cooking a very long time.
I received this from Netgalley.
This is the perfect first cookbook for young adults both within and outwit college. As well as the expected recipes which are simple to follow and tasty it starts with a lot of key information required such as the key ingredients and techniques. Further, this section also includes a basic list of utensils required which is key as there is nothing worse getting partway through a recipe and being unable to continue as you don't have the required tool. Perfect and simple!
I did like the book for a beginner or college student. The book gives plenty of easy recipes and good tips of what to and what not to do.
Easy read!!
I haven't had the pleasure to read the first of this cookbook, but I'm very glad to have had access to this 2nd edition. This cookbook has everything one can need when moving out. I don't think this only applies to college, but for all the youngsters out there who's leaving the nest, so to speak. I know I would have definitely have benefited from a detailed cookbook such as this.
It has easy and cheap recipes, good step-by-step instructions, great advice and descriptions and some very useful charts.
Very useful cookbook, all in all!
This cookbook was amazing and easy to use! I definitely ordering a physical copy. Can not wait to try all the recipes!!

Review written after downloading a galley from NetGalley.
Emma Lunsford has created a very straightforward set of recipes that really do cover EVERYTHING. Whichever student ends up with a copy will not only be able to feed themselves, but will also be able to host a dinner party or rule a movie night. There were a few recipes I adored, like the Keto Egg Quiches and the simple Pancake and Crepes recipes.
The recipes are very simple, with the ingredient list often longer than the directions. A lo of the recipes are also geared towards being vegan or suitable for a Keto diet, which may be useful for some students. Lunsford's writing is clear and her first chapter on kitchen requirements, prepping etc. are also useful. I would have liked a few more photos of the finished products, but as many of the recipes are straightforward this isn't always necessary.
I did struggle with the measurements in cups, simply because the conversion is more difficult for me than it should be. However, I will definitely save a few of these recipes for the future, even if I'm no longer a student.
This is THE cookbook for college students! There are so many possibilities and I was very impressed. I'm not in college anymore but I'm always looking for some quick and easy to make recipes and I found this book very helpful. I could really make 85% of the recipes in this book, and trust me, there are lots and lots of great ones! The book is organized by when you would want to make those recipes, for example: Breakfast, Lunch, snacks on the go, party food, recipes for when the parents come over or when your date comes over. There are also some vegetarian and vegan options and some desserts at the end. Great book!
I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
I'll be cooking for myself for the first time this coming year and this cookbook is certainly going to come in handy! There are so many amazing recipes that I'm looking forward to trying (especially breakfast recipes as I'm typically not a breakfast person). Learning to cook is intimidating but Lunsford offers so much helpful information on the basics of cooking and being in the kitchen that anyone can learn to make something from the cookbook!!
This is a great cookbook for any new cook or even a seasoned one. The first chapter goes over some of the basics for cooking such as common cooking supplies, different types of cooking (oven vs. stove top), kitchen staples, and useful cooking tips. The recipes are organized by breakfast, lunch, snacks, recipes that need special devices, leftovers, bowl meals, party food and more. Recipes are denoted to inform us whether the recipes are vegetarian, vegan, ketogenic diet, gluten-free, dairy-free, or paleo diet. All recipes come with nutritional information. I wish there were more pictures of the recipes, but otherwise I loved this cookbook.
As a college student The Everything College Cookbook was exactly what I need on my book shelf. It has so many recipes that are cheap, quick, and easy to make. Although I won't be returning to campus in the fall, I look forward to preparing my arsenal of easy meals to make!
The Everything College Cookbook, 2nd Edition is a reformat and update of the first edition by Emma Lumsford. Originally published in 2005, the 2nd Ed. is due out 4th Aug 2020 from Simon & Schuster on their Adams Media imprint as part of the Everything series. It's 304 pages (print edition) and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.
The recipes are arranged thematically, an introduction with general directions for prep-work and the challenges of working in a small space with limited tools is followed by chapters for breakfast, lunch, snacks, recipes utilizing special equipment (Instant Pot, microwave, air fryer, slow cooker), bowls, party food, vegan, date food, parent visits, and desserts. There's also a chapter with tips for leftovers. Each of the recipes includes an introductory description, ingredients listed in a bullet point sidebar (US measurements only, no metric equivalents), and step by step instructions. Nutritional info is included in a text box. Variations and alternatives are provided in sidebars at the end of the recipes. There is a metric conversion table at the back of the book.
Most of the ingredients should be available at any well stocked grocery store although some might need to be sourced at specialist (vegan/gourmet) grocers.
My main quibble with the book is that the recipes are mostly not photographed. There are some photos, and they're clear and attractive, but they only represent about 5% of the recipes included in the book. It is, however, a very well written book full of budget friendly (mostly) healthy foods in a wide variety of styles.
Four and a half stars. I've rounded up for the quality of the writing and the distinctly high quality of the recipes themselves (tasty!) and the mission of the book: high quality food with a budget friendly price tag. Good food shouldn't be ruinously expensive or difficult.
Although aimed at college students, this would also make a superlative choice for a young person living alone for the first time to provide a real and healthy alternative to takeaway and fast food.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this cookbook. My son is going to college in the fall and has recently been learning to cook a little more. The recipes are simple and yet come off looking a little higher end than you’d expect for a college kid. With simple instructions and colourful pictures I can absolutely say that this would be a great addition to any care package you’re sending to your teen.
This is a great cookbooks for beginners and anyone who enjoys cooking, I love the way the author gives definitions, explanations, suggestions and measurement equivalents. The recipes are simple and easy to follow. I cannot wait to share this book with my rising college freshman, and try some of these myself!
Thank you Adams Media and Netgalley for this ARC.
A terrific first cookbook with delicious, easy recipes. An excellent gift!
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
Although I’m neither a novice cook nor a college student I thought this was a great cookbook. It’s definitely geared toward someone on their own for the first time, with plenty of helpful hints on tools, pantry staples and methods. The directions were clear and concise and had some great advice.
What a great book to help college students not only eat cheap but eat healthily! With over 300 recipes there is bound to be something for even the pickiest eater. Made with easy to get ingredients and instructions on how to make in tight college confines, this book is a must for all the students who want to skip the dining hall mess.
This book is an essential purchase as a gift for anyone going off to college/university or even moving into their first home and being uncertain in the kitchen.
The chapter divisions are so practical and flow into each other.
I especially liked the fact that the author gets down to basics and explains everything plainly and simply.
The chapter on meals for dates and special occasions brought a smile to my face.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me the chance to read this book.
wonderful cookbook with easy recipes to cook and enjoy..... Even a beginner can make delicious recipes......
