Honestly i did not like this book at all. The writing was so simplistic and i hated the way it just constantly cut from one perspective to the next, I like dual perspective books however when each chapter is 2 pages long and one chapter its hawks perspective and the next is the perspective of max it meant that i could not get into any of the characters stories and backgrounds. Some of the chapters could easily have been made into one chapter and explained a bit more. Also the plot of this book was so easy to guess. i have not read anything by this author before and i wont be reading anything else.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC! I haven't read the Maximum Ride series but that in no way affected my review of Hawk as the book works really well as a standalone. I very rarely delve into YA and felt this was really just a simple palate cleanser of an in-between book, no convoluted plot to focus on and quick, easy chapters that were pretty bite-sized as per Patterson's usual writing. I didn't find anything hugely exciting about this book but it was a very fast-paced YA action story that I breezed through with no major problems, just no major hooks to catch me either! I enjoyed the characters well enough (though wished for far more development in some) and didn't mind the slightly cheesy vibe of the writing at times. A nice summer read!
This is quite a YA distopian fantasy adventure following the story of Hawk, an abandoned child on the streets of the City of the Dead.
I was quite disappointed with this overall, but it has some good elements. The opening is quite bad, first scene is quite poor and it takes a long time to get any context at all, but it does improve. The second act is about family and redemption and has great potential, new and interesting characters, but unfortunately that peters out into a very generic action/uprising story with very little character development. I wanted to know about Angel, Izzy, Gasman and the Flock, who they were and where they came from, but instead I got soldiers dropping bombs and constantly wounded main protagonists who are honestly not that likeable.
Significant plot elements left unresolved (mystery broadcasts) doesn't help this feeling. If the editors get to read this, please consider some more character development and fewer action scenes.
I recieved a copy of this book to review from Netgalley. Thank you for the opportunity
This book is an action packed rollercoaster. I was a fan of the Maximum Ride series and was excited to read more about that world. I was a bit apprehensive about reading this book as I hoped the author would do justice to the previous books but he definitely did. This book is great, Hawk being the feisty, strong heroine we all need right now. The writing was fluid and sharp, giving the book a edge and so preventing it from being your typical YA book.
Hawk was a bit teenage angsty at times but she is a teenager and I feel like this book would appeal greatly to teens and YA readers.
I would recommend this book.
I hadn't realised that this was related to a previous series when I started reading it but it didn't matter as it worked very well as a standalone. It is set in a dystopian post-apocolyptic world ruled by a dictator and dominated by ruthless gangs and violence. Hawk starts the story waiting on the street corner her parents left her on, a corner dominated by gangs and Opes. Gradually we see that she is the caregiver for another group of abandoned children who live in a derelict children's home next to a prison. These children are failed experiments and even Hawk herself, with her wings, are the result of an experiment. These wings need to be kept secret but when they are revealed her world ill never be the same again.
Certainly fast paced and having some great characters. Yes, at times, Hawk becomes the angst ridden teenager she is but as this is a YA novel the general reader should relate to this. There's violence and cruel adults but overall the message is that family is who or what you choose it to be.
Hawk is a fast paced sequel to the Maximum Ride series.
It doesn't disappoint, full of energy, speed and intrigue. A really exciting start to a much anticipated journey!
I started this yesterday morning and read all day until late until the evening this is by far the best book I have read in a long time. It deserves way more than 5 stars I just could not put it down The characters were amazing, honestly like nothing I'd ever read before I am hoping it could be part of a trilogy. Thank you James Patterson for this amazing book and thank you Netgalley for allowing me to review it. 50 stars!!
Hawk by James Patterson is a fast paced dystopian thriller. Giving you a chance to revisit with old characters and meet new ones, this book is full of adventure.
I Loved this book, took a couple of chapters to be hooked. New characters and strange circumstances take place in the beginning before we meet up with old favourites, Well worth reading, highly recommended. Both my 11 year old and I love the Maximum Ride series, this long awaited return was very welcome
I read Maximum Ride as a child and fell completely in love with it, eagerly awaiting each new book in the series. Until it reached about book 5 and the whole thing just became strange and convoluted and I stopped being interested at all.
When I heard about this book, all my love of the start of the series came flooding back and I actually found myself excited! Now, it's not as good as the first few of the original series, but is infinitely better than the later books!
The cast of characters is good, and I loved revisiting the Flock. The tone of the book reflects the fact that its still written for teenagers so it felt a little young, but I suppose that's so that it can capture a new audience.
This was definitely a middle of the road book for me - I finished it because of nostalgia, but won't be encouraging anybody to read it.
I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This review has been posted to Goodreads and will be submitted to Amazon after release.
I don't know any parts of the maximum Ride series and got to know the bokk only thanks to netgalley, so I can't compare this book to any other titles of the series. I would consider it a new beginning and that's why I didn't have the feeling to miss something or needing more information. Through the protagonist of the book and her life we also start from the beginning so it is a good way to introduce new readers to the story. I liked the protagonist, Hawk, even though she is sometimes a typical teenager, but that ist to be expected when reading a YAnovel. I didn't like the violence desciptions that much, but that is probably also my problem of not being the target group. Overall I liked the descriptions of this dystopic world and consider it to be a good story.
Hawk is part of a series that I have not read. This is however a novel that stands on its own.
I have read a lot of YA. This will appeal.
There is a dystopian society. Hawk lives on the streets after she was abandoned on the streets. She has a gang of other misfit teenagers. But she always waits on the corner every afternoon for her parents to return for her.
But she knows no one else who has wings. She lives at the Children's home, near the prison.
Lots of adventure, rescuing others, learning about themselves. The adults are often harsh. Families are those who have your back.
Good life messages in a fun way!
A fast-paced, exciting and compelling addition to the Maximum Ride series by popular novelist James Patterson.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. You can read this book without having read the Maximum Ride series, which is what I did.
Hawk is a young - but very tough girl - who has been waiting on the same street corner every day for the past 10 years waiting for someone to fetch her.
The book is full of adventure and will thrill readers between 10 and 15.
Loved this book, it was great to revisit the characters from the Maximum Ride series that I had come to know and love previously and a lovely surprise after we thought there would be no more. The story line is good and keeps you wanting to read on and on, fast paced and exciting. Hawk is a new part of the storyline and the setting is now different from the previous we got used to and a number of years later. I think even if you've never read any of the series, this would still be an enjoyable read.
A sincere thank you to the publisher, author and Netgalley for providing me with an ebook copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is not my usual genre, I’m more into crime/thriller books and even psychological thrillers too so I am extremely pleased and grateful to them for opening up my mind to something totally different.
So positives: the characters were interesting. My favourite was Clete and the other kids from the home. They just seemed the most interesting.
This started off with all the foundations of a great book. I found Hawk relatively likeable, through all her struggles she remained strong and despite everything, she had a good heart.
However, midway through she lost that and we went through a lot of teenage angst and self doubt and just negativity. I get it, we’ve all been there but it just seemed so off-character from what we’d already experienced.
Oh and then suddenly, she flipped back.
Likewise, I found the story slow and it wasn’t gripping like I’d hoped. The action didn’t start until midway through and then the ending was super abrupt. It left so many open questions.
I had really high hopes for this one but was left feeling quite disappointed.
Enjoyed this book by James Patterson in the long running teen series. Suitable for readers who are both young and old who like fantasy. Max and Fang and the flock are reunited with their lost daughter. The story takes you on a journey on how together they defeat their evil nemesis, McCullom. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me review this book.
Alone in the City of the Dead, where life is precarious, lives a teenage girl called Hawk and her gang of friends who are trying their best to survive .
Then chaos begins as her friends are imprisoned and she must use her wits to rescue them,. Then in a twist of fate her life is turned upside down as she meets a man who claims to be her father. Soon Hawk comes to realise she isn’t the only one who can fly.
In a whirlwind she meets a group called the flock and is told her parents are alive. They need her help to rescue them and her friends. Can she do it? Can she rescue Maximum Ride and help change the City of the Dead?
This is a welcome return to Maximum Ride and her flock, but the addition of Hawk takes the books to a new level.
For kids or adults this is a book you will devour.
James Patterson truly is at the top his game with this story. No one can produce books of this quality at such a high standard as often as James Patterson seems to.
An absolutely marvellous novel by the best in the business. I loved it!
This is great for people who enjoy dystopian thrillers. I hadn't really realised it was a follow on from a previous series, but it didn’t stop me from really enjoying and engaging with this book. I think people will go back to that series while waiting for more HAWK
