Pugs + potatoes doesn’t seem like a match made in heaven, but it is in Pugtato Finds a Thing! Pugtado has a wonderful adventure while trying to identify a mystery object found in the ground. The illustrations are absolutely adorable!

This book is so funny and unique. Absolutely love Pugtato. I think this will be as fun for parents as it is for the kids.
This is a silly but adorable picture book. I loved the idea of a combination of a pug and a potato and the storyline is light and fun. I read this with my students and they enjoyed the story and the illustrations.
A little half-pug, half-potato (squealing) finds something in the garden. Is it a ball? Is it a chew toy? Maybe his "spuddies" will know! Obviously, I am 27 years old, a whole grown adult, and I got this because I'm obsessed with puns and cute drawings of animals. It was a good, funny book that provides a lot of opportunities for children to interact with the story, with wonderful animal-food hybrid puns such as Brussels Snouts (Brussels sprout pigs), Purrsnip (parsnip cat), and Cowbbage (I don't think I need to explain this one). It's never too early to teach your children to appreciate puns and wordplay.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.
Cute little story for children. Enjoyed the adventure Pugtato went on. The illustrations are adorable too. I think kids will really like the expressions of the different characters Pugtato encounters as well as the personification of the various foods.
This is a cute and fun character.
The thought of a "pugtato" immediately had my daughters laughing.
Fun story. Great return readability
I read this back in July thanks to Netgalley but I forgot to write the review!
In this new picture book there is a combination of vegetables and animals (Pugtato, Tomatoad, etc) when Pugtato finds a thing while digging in the dirt. He travels to all of his friends trying to find out what the thing could be. In the end it is a sweet discovery. It was very cute and was a delightful read.
Combining animals with vegetables is an interesting choice for a picture book. It doesn't server much purpose in the plot, only some subtle puns in the names, but does result in some cute characters I fear the message will be lost on most readers though. It's a bit subtle.
Happy Publication Day! 08-04-2020!
I have a Pug , so I may be partial but this children’s book is absolutely adorable !
Pugtato is digging in the dirt one day and finds a shiny, round; purple object. He isn’t sure what it is or what it could be used for , so he sets off to ask his “Spuddies” what they think. His friends, with their “blended” names :from Unicorn on The Cob to Croccoli and Collieflower are as cute as can be as they put their heads together to try to figure out what “Thing “ is.
5 stars ⭐️. Would recommend to any child that’s an animal-lover!
Thank you to Zondervan/ Zonderkidz , Netgalley and Sophie Corrigan for allowing me to read an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you so much @ZonderKids & @NetGalley for giving me this eARC in exchange for my honest and unbiased review (Release Date | 04 August 2020)
SYNOPSIS | Pugtato (a potato that looks like a pug) is digging in the garden when he comes across a strange shiny purple object. He enlists the help of his best garden "spuddies" to try and learn what the mysterious object is.
WHAT I LIKED:
- absolutely adorable illustrations
- preciously quirky hybrid animal/vegetable characters
- lovely story about the power of friendship told in rhymes
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
- nothing! This was a perfect children's picture book (ages 4 - 8) and I'm going to recommend that my library stocks it so other children can enjoy this magical story too.
Will Pugtato find out what the thing is???
This book is filled with soft nudges of kindness and adorable animations. Each character is a clever play on words complete with fun drawings and unique character traits. I'm looking forward to sharing this book with students and friends alike.
Very Punny
Sometimes it's hard to find truly funny books for children, but I think this is one of them. On top of that, it's absolutely adorable as well. Pugtato is not the only animal/vegetable hybrid in this book. His “spuddies” are also hybrids, with very funny names (Carrat, Tomatoad, Purrsnip) and fantastic shapes. Unicorn on the Cob made me laugh out loud as soon as I saw the name, and I loved the fearsome-looking Croccoli (broccoli/crocodile hybrid). Pugtato discovers a shiny Thing when it's poking around in the dirt. Pugtato has no clue what this is, so goes on a tour of his friends to try to figure it out. Unfortunately, his friends all seem to want to keep the Thing for themselves, and some even want to do destructive things to it. But Pugtato holds onto it and eventually learns what it is. I don't think the message about trusting your instincts really worked in the story, but the witty puns and the great illustrations make it a very fun book despite this flaw. It's just a humorous and creative book.
What a clever book! Pugtato is a potato that looks like a pug. One day he finds a mysterious Thing and he simply must know what it is. He sets off on a quest to found out, traveling through his community to get the opinions of his fellow vegetable-animal hybrid neighbors. This would be a fun read-aloud and a great way to get kids excited to try new vegetables. #PugtatoFindsaThing #NetGalley
this was really cute and i loved it so much wow!!! i would definitely buy this for my little nieces and i could see them loving it as well!!!
I absolutely loved this book. Not only was Pugtato super cute, but all of the other characters were so unique! Every character was part animal/vegetable. Anyways, Pugtato found a super cool 'thing' and wanted to find out what it was. He showed it to his 'spuddies' and each one had a different idea of what it was. Pugtato ended discovering what his 'thing' was in this book!
I really loved this book. Not because it has any deep message but, the wonderful illustrations and the silly antics of all the neighborhood animals. Everyone in the book seems to be named under the genus Pig Latin which will make sense after you read the book.
A great choice for reluctant readers.
This was such a sweet adorable book. I asked for this one because it looked like something I would buy my son when I take him on one of my book store adventures.
I really adored the illustrations. As well as the play on words with the animals and veggies. The message isn’t really deep or groundbreaking but simple and easy to understand while still mildly open to interpretation. Perfect for little ones, especially those with the shorter attention spans like my own.
Even though I have a digital copy, I’d still pick this up if I saw it out in the world because it extremely different and I haven’t seen anything like it before. & my little one seemed to enjoy it enough 😇
Thank you Zonderkidz-Books for the ARC via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Pugtato Finds a Thing is a beautifully illustrated and gently written tale about friendship, curiosity, and compassion. Due out 4th August 2020 from Zonderkidz, it's 32 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
The text is positive and upbeat, with sweetly silly rhyming text, and adorable illustrations. The characters are clever vegetable/animal hybrids (Pugtato, Tweetroot, Tomatoad, and others). The story follows Pugtato's adventures after he finds a mysterious thing and consults his friends and neighbors to see if they can help identify it.
With so many varied characters, the potential for silly read-along voices is stellar. The whimsical illustrations are deceptively simple looking but full of small rich details which will provide opportunities for 'hunt-and-find' during laptime or bedtime reading. It might be important to some readers to know that although Zondervan is a Christian publishing house, there is no overt Christian branding or proselytizing included in this book. The messages are of kindness and compassion, following one's dreams and trusting in oneself.
Four stars
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher.
Incredibly adorable, Pugtato is full of silly vegetable and animal mashups (Tomatoad, Tweetroot, etc) and charming rhymes. (Purrsnip's character design killed me. The smallest head and the biggest body.) Pugtato finds a thing in the garden and asks all his friends what it is for, but everyone has a different (and wrong) idea and eventually Pugtato has to decide what it's for.
This book is absolutely adorable! I kept having to show pictures to my husband. Every page of this book made me smile. The Pugtato is so much fun and the other rhyming names were just as cute; Tamatoad, Purrsnip. I love this and cannot wait to be back in the classroom to read this book with my students.
5 stars.
