Description
Enchanting illustrations. Giggle-inducing text. Unique and loveable characters. Join Pugtato and his cute and quirky pack of pals in this heartwarming picture book that celebrates the power of friendship, compassion, and believing in your own unique gifts.
When Pugtato’s simple, quiet life is disrupted after he digs up a strange object in his garden, he enlists his best “spuddies” to help (they are more clever than he is, after all). Tweetroot is certain it’s a new egg for her nest. Tomatoad is quite sure it’s a toy just for him. And Purrsnip simply won’t stop scratching it! Luckily, Pugtato has another very special spuddy to ask …

Advance Praise
Publishers Weekly: Diligence and openheartedness are the themes of this rhyming story by Corrigan (The Not Bad Animals), but its real appeal lies in its eccentric cast: each character is a mash-up of a vegetable and animal species, with a hybrid name that evokes Parentese. The eponymous Pugtato, a roly-poly tuber-puppy who lives in a vegetable patch, discovers the mysterious and seemingly inanimate “Thing”—pearly pink and shaped like a Nautilus shell—and wants to do right by it. But friends like Tweetroot, a beet-red bird, and Carrat, who’s bright orange and toothy, are only interested in Thing for their own purposes (“Carrat thought Thing/ was for gnawing and chewing”). Finally, the wise Unicorn on the Cob advises from a leafy stalk, “you must follow your heart./ For it holds all the answers/ and sets you apart”; thus inspired, Pugtato hugs Thing, and it blossoms into a new friend. While the book’s earnestness is undeniable, its real impact may be in the giggles it inspires when readers next see a salad or produce stand. Ages 4–8.

I cannot get over how adorable the veggie animals are. Pugtato and his journey to follow his heart is beautiful.
This was an adorable read! What a whimsical sense of fun and curiosity wrapped in a precious package of fun drawings. I want this book in every home!
This is adorable. I love Pugtato and all of his friends. Silly concepts are so great in kids books and the art is done wonderfully to portray the silly but still appealing aspect.
Pugtato Finds a Thing is way too adorable! This is the story of Pugtato and his quest to find out what "Thing" is. He asks all of his "spuddies", because he doesn't think he is smart enough to find the answer on his own. In the end, Pugtato not only learns what "Thing" is, but he also learns something very important about himself. This story is great for all children, but especially for those who lack confidence.
I originally decided to read this book because of a 5th grade ELL student of mine. For about three months (before Covid-19), this student blurted out "Potato" at random times, every single day. It was silly, and very endearing. Now, every time I see something with a potato, I have to look at it. This story will always remind me of my sweet, silly student, and left me with a smile on my face.

Favorite children’s book I’ve read in awhile. Cute rhyme schemes, creative vegetable/animal hybrid characters, and an absolutely endearing pugtato, this book teaches about listening to your heart. I really like all of the talking points this book provides between the reader and the child. Truly excited to share with the kids in my life.
This is such a sweet and funny book. Pugtato finds a shiny thing and goes to all his friends to see if they know what it’s for. This book is full of puns and cute illustrations.
This book was absolutely adorable! I loved the illustrations and the witty puns. Perfect for a read aloud! I hope I can purchase it for my elementary library in the near future.
Brilliant and imaginative!
After digging in the mud, Pugtato discovers a shiny purple object in the ground and can’t figure out what it is. He decides to ask all of his best ‘spuddies’ Tweetroot, Tomatoad, Purrsnip, Carrat, and others just exactly what this Thing could be. Each of them have their own ideas, but Pugtato soon learns that the answer is within him if he’ll only look to his heart.
We fell in love with this book. The rhyming story paired with the charming illustrations will have children captivated. These hybrid animal/veggies are all so clever and have the cutest names too. There isn’t anything we didn’t like about it.
Pugtato Finds a Thing is a beautiful story of friendship, love, and most importantly, believing in yourself. We need more children’s books like this. I highly recommend this for parents, schools and libraries. I’ll certainly be recommending this one to our local librarian.

Ok so I'm a school counselor and I'm always looking for fun stuff to share with my littles. I also love pugs. OMG THIS WAS FANTASTIC and I see there are more! This book was the cutest ever and so perfect for children.
The illustrations were amazing. All the animals were portrayed in plant form which I thought was very unique and clever. The story was sweet and had a moral. I plan on buying these books for my classroom bookshelf. I can't wait to read these after this Corona stuff is over.
Such a cute book! My daughter read this with me and we both laughed out loud a couple of times! The names of the vegetable/animal characters were so creative and we loved finding out what each new one would be named. The illustrations were fabulous, it was full of fun rhyming words, and there was a great lesson in the end. I also love when a book encourages the love of healthy food and this does that for sure! I can't wait to read this book to my first grade students when we go back to school, they will love it!
I am a big fan of Sophie Corrigan's books and here her fabulous Pugtato character has an adventure all of his own!
Pugtato finds a 'Thing' in the ground and he decides to take it to some of his best spuddys to find out if they know what it is. He goes to visit Tomatoad, the three Brussels Snouts and Collieflower (among others!), but it take a chat with the Unicorn on the Cob to make him realise the Thing just needs a little bit of kindness. And that kindness produces some surprising results!
Sophie's veggie characters are sheer genius! Each one made me smile and the whole book is packed full of giggles for little ones and grown ups too. The story is adventurous and fun with a lovely message, and the rhyming is lively and silly and brilliant!
Ah, Pugtato. Once of the best names I've seen in a very long time for a book. The name alone made me pick this book up, but the premise and story kept me hanging on.
Pugtato is a pug who is also a potato. He's cute, adorable and likes to play in the mud. One day he finds a shiny things and decides to show his buddies, er.... spuddies. Many of the animals are also vegetable themed creatures, and all of them get to see the shiny thing pugtato has found!
This book was ridiculously cute and the premise is one of my favourites of the year. It's comedic and fun and everything you want in a children's picture book.
Four out of five stars.

I love Pugtato and his very punny friends! This would be a delightful storytime read, sure to make both kids and adults giggle and smile.
Pugtato finds a thing and wants to find out what to do with it. He asks all of his friends their thoughts but he has a feeling that they aren't quite sure of thing's purpose either. The story is cute, and the illustrations are amazing. I loved seeing all the animal-vegetable hybrids. It is such a unique and creative concept.
The character designs and illustrations alone make this book well worth reading. Every creature is so flipping cute!
Gather all your friends and family, even the grumpy ones. You will all make a new friend with Pugtato (just your normal potato dog!) He lives in a garden with a community of friends that will keep you feeling young at heart as you meet them. After Pugtato makes a special discovery and asks all his friends for help, you will see the power of natural intuition and being true to yourself. This message is light and so needed for kids and adults today. A sweet and pleasant read!
WOW. This book is beyond words adorable and clever!! The illustrations are perfection, as are the characters! My son just loved this and I cannot imagine a child that wouldn't. Pugtato is SO CUTE and I'm glad he followed his heart. Are there more books in this series? If not- there absolutely needs to be! A must purchase for our household.

Oh my goodness! This is just the cutest, most original, fun to read book that I've seen in a while! I found myself eager to turn the page to discover what the mentioned veganimal would look like! While some may have been a bit of a stretch, I enjoyed the imaginative take of combining animals with veggies so much that I just chuckled and enjoyed it! I will enjoy reading this with my kids many more times! It is adorable and has a good lesson; what else can I ask for!
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the chance to read and review this book. I truly enjoyed it!
