I personally have really enjoyed looking at this cookbook. Found multiple recipes I wanted to try even though I don't totally eat a gluten free diet.
For those that are just beginning the gluten-free journey or those that need new ideas or those that don't want recipes that require all kinds of pricey ingredients this is your cookbook. I was slow to review this cookbook because I really wanted to try some actual recipes and I did AND they are GOOD!!! I can actually do gluten-free if I have this cookbook. It's basic, It's simple, it explains things in an easy to understand way but doesn't make you want to run away screaming (or to the nearest fast food restaurant)! The pictures were beautiful and to a foodie that means a lot! To someone who is getting ready to change their food "life-style" it means a lot! I want this cook book!!!
I personally have really enjoyed looking at this cookbook. Within a couple pages, I already had multiple recipes I wanted to try! Just what I was looking for.
Just glancing through the 30-minute Gluten-free Cookbook, it looks like a good choice. However, when I dug deeper, the flaws kept piling up.
First, the positives include flags for other types of allergens and full nutritional information. There is also a great variety of recipes from appetizers to desserts. There are a total of 112 recipes within the book. It can also be read on a kindle so the print can be whatever you size you wish.
The negatives weren’t apparent until I actually tried to cook a few of the recipes. To be fair, I suspected the two that I chose would have issues. The Southern Beans and Rice asks you to cook long-grain white rice for only twelve minutes. It also didn’t say how much water to cook it in, which may be problematic for new cooks. It always takes at least twenty minutes to get rice fully cooked. However, if you work back from the 30-minutes promised in the title, this is all the time it can cook to meet the 30-minute deadline.
The second dish I made was Creamy Pasta with Spinach and Pecans. It had the unusual sauce of feta and cream cheese. The sauce, while rich, was different from the usual white pasta sauce, which was nice. The pecans did add an unusual flavor and crunch to the recipe. However, the author asks you to put a lot of baby spinach (6 ounces) on top of the 12 ounces of pasta and sauce. Then stir it to wilt the spinach. It never wilted. What I usually do is put the spinach in the pasta drainer before adding the pasta on top. That always works so I’m not sure why the author didn’t use that method instead. After those two recipes, I stopped using the cookbook (even though I had bought the ingredients for two more recipes). I didn’t want to take the chance again on wasting food.
For these reasons, I can’t recommend the 30-minute Gluten-free Cookbook. 1 star.
Thanks to Rockridge Press and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
As the title indicates, this book contains gluten-free recipes. But it also includes labeling on the recipes to indicate whether they are vegetarian or vegan, and if they contain any of the top food allergens. The recipes, because they are quick to make, are uncomplicated, usually using fairly standard ingredients. The book contains chapters for breakfasts, soups & salads, snacks & sides, desserts, and multiple chapters for main dishes, separated by vegetarian seafood, poultry, and meat. There are also sample menus, equivalents, and conversions.
This cookbook is an excellent resource for those dealing with food sensitivities or food allergies who do not have excessive time to devote to planning and preparing meals. #NetGalley
Thanks so much to the publisher for an ARC to read and give my honest opinion. This is a gluten free cookbook with a ton of recipes designed to help you eat better! Do not look upon this cookbook though to really help you discern the differences in gluten and non gluten foods, or how to recognize hidden gluten in prepared foods.
What did I like? Most of the recipes were simple and mostly consisted of clean eating. Combinations of spices and whole foods without additives or already prepared items. Any items already prepared ...you must make sure do not contain gluten or gluten byproducts. The book has an array of salsa’s that look yummy from pineapple salsa to regular.
What could use some help? Lack of pictures is always a serious concern for me, although the author has a blog that probably includes more pictures...I feel the book is lacking. Too few pictures make the cookbook harder for me to enjoy.
Would I recommend or buy? If your a salsa lover then this is probably a great addition to your cookbook shelves but newbie gluten sensitive people would probably benefit from a more advanced book. If your just looking for some clean eating recipes and you just like the idea of eating mostly gluten free then I believe this is a great cookbook.
Thoughts for the author? Congratulations on your new release! I enjoyed this cookbook but I have to agree with some other reviewers that more help on discerning gluten products would have been more helpful in the beginning? Four stars otherwise! Kudos for a great healthy cookbook!
GF diets do not have to be a challenge with this new release from Withington. She shows you have to prepare healthy, easy and most importantly tasty meals in no time!
My family all tend to do better on a gluten free diet. I know for me in particular that when I eat foods that contain gluten it causes digestion issues and acid reflux a lot of the time so I definitely try to limit the gluten at our house. I tend to follow a more ketogenic/low carb lifestyle but some gluten free recipes can definitely plug in to those ways of eating and lots of gf recipes for my kids to give a try. We are a pretty busy family between scouts, soccer, and other multiple after school activities between my 3 kids (when we are not on lockdown for a global pandemic, that is) so time saving recipes are my jam for regular weeknights. There are tons of great recipes in this book for all different times of day, and I like that they lean on the healthier side of things because even eating gluten free you can eat in a not so healthy way. Even though the recipes are healthy they sound like they would be delicious, especially the pistachio cranberry energy bites (which would be a big hit around my house with adults and children alike), sheet pan chicken fajitas, pepperjack stuffed chicken, and pressure cooker beef stew. I am also excited to try a few of the desserts, particularly the lemon curd with mixed berries, which sounds like a perfect end to a summer day.
If you’re on the Gluten-Free Bandwagon, it’s always nice to not only read up on new information, but also to add good new recipes to your repertoire. The 30-Minute Gluten-Free Cookbook: 100+ Quick and Simple Recipes For Every Day by Jan Withington, has dozens of mouthwatering recipes that can be served to the whole family and be safe for those who need their food to be gluten-free. This is not a baking cookbook, so the special ingredients needed are those that most of us already have on our shelves, such as gluten-free soy sauce, gluten-free Worcestershire sauce, and gluten-free spice blends. Several of the recipes call for a small amount of gluten-free flour and gluten-free baking powder, too, which is in every grocery store nowadays.
The author has taken regular mainstream recipes that everyone likes and changed them a little so that they can be eaten by everyone and contain no gluten. She includes several stir-fries that turned out delicious. Withington gives cooks dozens of options for different meats and poultry, including ground turkey and chicken, lamb chops, pork, chicken breasts and chicken tenders, as well as seafood such as salmon and tilapia. There is also a chapter with vegetarian and vegan dishes which are quite tempting, even to carnivores. The recipes are easy-to-follow and most have minimal ingredients. Withington has also included some basic spice blends and sauces.
Although there are pancakes, waffles, and other gluten-free breads and desserts, they don’t call for the hard-to-find gluten-free ingredients. Every recipe has turned out well, so far. Unfortunately, there aren’t many photographs; most cooks would like more. However the photographs that are included are beautiful and mouthwatering.
If you must cook gluten-free, this cookbook has enough recipes to keep everyone happy.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
