A great book for a personal library or a religious school. This teaches that we are not the same in a different way. I enjoyed reading this aloud to a group of children.
Let me just start with this: I loved DIFFERENT LIKE ME so much!
This is a simple book. It points out all the differences in the little kids - skin color, hair color, bodies, languages, favorites. All the things that the world insists need to keep us apart. But then, it turns around and points out that underneath the surface, the kids are all the same, yet not.
God made each of us unique. Unique and made in His image. This book shows that being different isn't meant to tear us apart. We can love our neighbors and embrace their differences, a viewpoint the world is sorely lacking right now.
This is a fairly easy book for young readers. My 6-year-old struggled with some of the larger words, but most of it he was able to read on his own. It's definitely one that we'll be buying a hard copy of, as they will enjoy reading it for years to come.
I borrowed this book from the library and my kids and I read it more than a few times. Each time, we came back and talked about how wonderful it was to be different from others, yet all connected. This is such an inspiring book. (and the art was gorgeous, too!)
So I really appreciate what the author set out to do with this book., and I think it's so important to have a wider range of diverse children's books.
That said, my personal issue with this book is God and religion. While this is, of course, perfectly fine for children who are religious, and whose religion also includes just the one God, I wouldn't use it in the classroom. I teach children of different kinds of faiths, and ones without, so I personally find it really important to consider this when choosing a book.
if used for private use only, it's a lovely book.
2.5 stars.
This was a cute little book about how everyone is different, but we all have similarities that we can bond over.
I love this storybook and how it celebrates our differences and how to remind our children that we are all different. And, that's a good thing.;)
A celebration of diversity. Nice bright and colourful. A good stimulus for discussion with young children.
Through the use of illustrations and rhymes, Different Like Me points out not only the ways in which we are unique, but also the many things we have in common. A quick read, this is a story that is sure to be a favourite on a family or classroom bookshelf. I particularly like the inclusivity inherent in the illustrations. The story begins and ends with Bible verses, as well as some follow up questions that would lend themselves well to a Sunday School lesson. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

What I think you should know about this book:
Different Like Me Written by Xochitl Dixon and Illustrated by Bonnie Lui is a Children’s Picture book. It has bright and bold illustrations that are attractive and fun for teachers.
What I think about this book:
This is such a delightful book ! Even before the current social climate I tried to find books that showed diversity. This book has diversity in spades. It features boys and girls, it has multiple skin tones, body types and excitedly for me children who have disabilities! It features a child with a wheelchair, another with a cane and dark glasses and a service dog. Most importantly it shows the children active and engaged in activities. I love that even with their different abilities each child is having fun and shown with friends. The only thing that I would change about the book would have been to have a child with a hearing aid, I just know from personal experience that it is hard to find a child with a hearing aid in books unless it is a book specifically about hearing loss. ( If I got a print copy I would happily draw one on a character for my son!) I also like the repetitive question in the book as it would make for a fun read aloud with a student. I highly recommend this book to any parent, preschool or Sunday School teacher!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
I received an ARC from Our Daily Bread Publishing, via NetGalley. This review is my personal opinion
In this book, Xotchil Dixon, take an important and relevant topic in our society. Inclusion although highly mentioned and discussed still has a long way in my heart this is an important and personal subject as a Special Needs Teacher and aunt of two children with Special Needs. What I like about this book is that goes to the center of all, from the start God created us we are all special, beautiful, and unique. Diversity is all around us, and I believe all children with this book could start to learn what the Bible says about our difference and how they can act before them. I also like the illustrations, I can see myself reading this book to my niece and nephew and sharing with them how beautiful is to be different. Well done to Xotchil Dixon, to Bonnie Liu for her illustrations.
A wonderful story with a powerful message! I really thought this was a great book and my kids enjoyed it as well. This is a book was a wonderful reminder of how beautiful our differences are and that although we are different, we are all beautifully and wonderfully made. This book explores the many possible differences we can have and that we are all different together. I was unaware about the religious perspective when I initially choose the book, but it makes no difference, the message was still wonderful. The illustrations were so well done and the rhyming words really helped the story along. This was easy to read, easy to follow along and my children and I really liked this book for our story time. Would definitely recommend this book for all children.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
Looking for a fun book to talk about how we are all different and unique and made in the image of God? This is it! While there are many books focused on race, this book goes further to discuss how we're all different in so many ways and it's a good thing. The beautiful, colorful, unique pictures are just a bonus.
Great children's book! I love the comprehension questions in the back of the book. The message of this book is so important while we all look different and like different things, we are all the same. I would recommend this book to any parent and child who believe in Christianity, as it does reference the bible and God.
This beautifully illustrated picture book is endearing. Diverse characters find that while they are different (unique!) from each other, they are also alike. Lovely to read with positive and spiritual (Christian) messages.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the opportunity to review an advance reading copy of #DifferentLikeMe
Dixon creates a charming poem that runs through the book, communicating the idea that all children are created by God no matter what they look like, and all are capable of doing beautiful things as part of their God-developed design as human beings. The illustrations also pair well with the story, creating a positive and enjoyable tone to the story.
My daughter and I read this together. She liked the colorful and pretty pictures. The art is top notch. She liked that the story had a poem and rhythm. It is a great way to introduce children to accepting all and seeing similarities instead of differences —all in the context of God’s love. I like that there’s a good list of questions for discussion with your child at the end. This is a carefully crafted book that is well made.
Different Like Me
by Xochitl Dixon
Back of the Book: “Different Like Me is Xochitl Dixon's first children's book. It's based on a story she wrote years ago to explain to her own children the beauty of God's diverse world.
God made each of us unique, but sometimes these differences can leave us feeling like a fish out of water. In Different Like Me, follow a diverse group of children as they work together to help a giant fish balloon toward a surprising conclusion that will delight children. Celebrate our differences and uncover what we have in common on this whimsical journey that reminds readers that no matter how different, all of us are a part of God’s wonderful creation.”
Impressions: This was a really cute book to open the discussion with kids about the differences we all have but also the similarities! I enjoyed the pictures and story as did my boys. I always appreciate when books have questions as this one did at the end to help keep the conversation going.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review shared here.
Different Like Me is a great book to showcase how God made us all different and unique, but we can still have things in common. I love that the book starts and ends with a Bible verse showing how God created us all in his image and that He was thinking of us before we were even born. This book includes kids of so many different races and abilities with great wording and adorable pictures! This is definitely one that I would love to add to my kids book collection!
I loved the message of this book, it’s about embracing differences. I could not recommend it for use in a public school
Setting since it mentions God and has biblical quotes at the beginning and end, but for private use in a Christian home it would be lovely.
Different Like Me by Xochitl dixon is a book that celebrates the differences in people. The book teaches about diversity well, but I would not include this in a classroom library due to the bible verses, unless the text was paired with other religions/verses. The illustrations were beautiful!
Review of eBook
Looking around, a young child observes that there are many other children, all different from me. Different shades, hair, eyes, smiles. Different languages. Different families, friends, homes, names. Different pets, food, games. They like different things and do different things.
We may be different, but we feel things the same. Happy, hurried, scared, sad, grumpy, worried, free, glad.
Perhaps, in our uniqueness, we are more alike than we are different.
This picture book illustrates diversity both in its words and in its pictures as it helps the young reader understand that differences don’t affect the many ways that people are alike. Colorful, eye-catching illustrations accompany the rhyming text.
This book is a perfect springboard for a parent/young child discussion about “different” and “alike” and how every person is unique and special.
Relevant scripture quotes appear prior to the beginning of the story and following the end of the story.
Highly recommended.
