I received an electronic ARC from Our Daily Bread Publishing through NetGalley.
The narrating child tells readers how the children they see are different from them and from each other. Then a realization hits and they start to share how everyone is alike and yet different and special.
Told in rhyme with vividly colorful illustrations.
Simple to follow for younger readers and terrific family read to share about everyone being unique and yet similar in so many ways.
I was blessed with the chance to read and advanced readers copy of "Different Like Me" written by Xochitl Dixon. This is a wonderful book. The premise is to verbalize to children that yes, there are differences between everyone, this is what makes us unique and special. Hand in hand with our differences are the ways in which we are all alike. The illustrations were beautiful and subtly shared all the wonders of different children. I plan to add this book to my collection to share with both my children and my students
I think this book is so well written. The pictures are cute and there is a variety of different children shown. It is a very simple message, but it is conveyed very well. I also appreciate the little questions in the back it makes it a very easy Sunday school lesson. It is a well written story that has good illustrations and a very good message. I can not wait to be able to share it with my students in the future.
If you are of the Christian faith, this one is a good picture book for your kiddos. It begins and ends with a Bible verse and also contains special discussion questions to spark deep conversations with your little ones. In between those quotes, this book teaches kids that different may not be so different after all. We all look different. Some of us move, communicate, and partake in life in different ways, but we all feel the same things. Being different makes us all special, and by looking past some of our differences, we can understan each other a little better.
This one is out in August, so keep an eye out for it. It’s great for bedtime, or a good way to start the day, especially if you want to ask some of those questions to give your kids something to think about throughout the day.
I LOVE the diversity embraced in this book! From service dogs, to ASL, to people with handicaps and all different cultures. This book is beautifully written and illustrated. A great book to spark a conversation with children about people who are "different."
A great story!
Thank you to the publisher for giving me a free copy!
It's stories like this that make a difference in the world! If I ever have a kid I will have my kids read stories like these! Not only is it important to teach your kid that racism is bad in any way, shape or form. It's important that every kid with a dissability, a different ethnicity, different hair, etc etc. Is just a kid like you.
Everyone is equal and everyone should be treated equally. I think this book is such an important book nowadays and I love how it's not just about race in this book but it also includes different dissabilities.
I loved this! It was such a quick read since it's a children's book but that doesn't make me love it less. The art style was also super cute hehe.
Definitely a good one !
"Different Like Me" by Xochitl Dixon is a wonderful story about how every person is different and people should embrace and celebrate that diversity. The story does have religious snippets including a few verses from the bible in the beginning and at the end of the book, but it does not impact the story or how it can be read in non-religious families. The colors and pictures are wonderful and truly complement the beautiful storyline. When we read it to our children, the little ones were engaged and followed along. There are even questions at the end of the book to assist with leading a guided discussion of the content. Overall, this was a wonderful story with a great message for all family members, young and old alike!
As a teacher and mom, I love this book! It shows that although people are different in many ways (skin color, eye color, abilities), we are all the same inside. I love that this book represented diverse groups of children including children with service animals and children in wheelchairs. I will be purchasing this book for my children and for gifts for other families.
Different Like Me was such a good book about the difference between each person. I really think this is a good book for children to read to learn more about their differences and I highly recommend it for children of all ages.
This is a wonderful little book for young children. The story is sweet and engaging. The illustrations are bright, beautiful and every child will find someone in the pages that they identify with. I highly recommend this book for every family library. It will also be a blessing for every kid's church and classroom!
A copy of this book was made available to me through netgalley. These opinions are my honest review.
A lovely book with gorgeous illustrations that features a wide variety of children, including ones with disabilities. Sadly, the religious component limits the scope of the story and ultimately takes away from the message by being untentionally exclusionary. People deserve respect, equality and rights no matter in what god a person believes in or how we came to be. Hinging a person's rights on the fact that a god made us this way is limiting, in my opinion.
Sadly, I think that the religious angle muddles the message and weakens the impact but it might work for other readers.
This book is for pre-school children of (heavily) Christian families.
Cute illustrations, good rhythm, great message! Shows ways kids are different but also the same....all of which leads to special!
In these days when "different" is often reason for discrimination this book shows children that 'different' is actually a reason for celebration.
'
I enjoyed this book because it is a simple story that shows kids that yes, everyone is different, but we also have similarities and are all special! The illustrations are great in this book and I think it would be a perfect bedtime story!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced digital copy of this book!
I received a digital arc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
If you are a religious person, I would definitely recommend this book for your children! I wanted to read and review it because it seemed really cute and the cover art was beautiful, but I didn't realize it went at it from a religious angle. I have no issue with it but it isn't for everyone.
This book is all about how wonderful the differences are and how they should be embraced, but we are all still the same in many ways. I love the emphasis on how our differences should be celebrated and embraced, as this is something many kids have a hard time learning. This book cites Bible verses at the beginning and end and includes a discussion guide for parents and teachers.
The art is definitely my favorite part! It's great to see so much diversity in a children's book.
The illustrations for this book are perfect! I would love to gift this to a family and I can already think of more than one that would treasure reading this picture book to their children. Though we might see the differences between each other, the turning point came with this line: "I look all around me and what do I see? So many kids not so different to me." Honing in on the ways we have been made that are similar to each other, was a beautiful turning moment and I anticipate it will resonate for other readers too.
This is a children's book that is good for Pre-K age kids. I really love children's book that shows kids everyone is different and some kids has disabilities. I will be buying this book to take to my kids EC (Special Needs) Classrooms. I think it will also show them that it is ok to be different. I really love this book. Their is bible sayings in this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher or author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This book is schedule to come out August 4-2020.
A beautiful book celebrating our differences and similarities. The illustrations are bold and stunning and the story has a wonderful message. Though this is labeled as a Christian book, there are only a couple of references to God/religion in the story. At the end, there is a nice guide with questions for parents/teachers to spur discussion with children. As this book is a little repetitive and simple in its message, it would be great for young children.
Thank you NetGalley and Our Daily Bread Publishing for providing this ARC.
What a lovely picture book for young children! The book has a very important message for children that 'we are all different and just as special as each other'. The illustrations were lovely and fun, and the writing was simple and perfect for little children. The book featured two lovely Bible verses, and some great discussion points. This book is perfect for parents and teachers to read to children and discuss afterwards.
Different Like Me is a beautiful children’s book about diversity.
It’s so important to teach kids that being/looking different is okay!
This book definitely does that.
The illustrations are beautiful!
And they go so well with the story.
Thank you Netgalley. I intend to buy a copy when this is out.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This is a lovely rhyming book for young children to help teach them about differences, diversity and being unique.
I loved how the author included pictures of emotions, children with disabilities and different races too.
This book is a great tool for teaching about everyone being different and to embrace who you are as who you are is how God made you to be.
I requested and received an e-ARC of this book from NetGalley and Our Daily Bread Publishing in exchange for my honest opinion.
I really liked that this book talks about all of the differences we may see when we look at each other; but this book also highlights all of the things that make us the same and bring us together like kindness and love. I also like that the illustrator showed children with different abilities and skin tones.
Its a good book telling kids that physical differences does not matter. It is only our feelings make us all the same. Illustrations are good. It begins and ends with a bible verse.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the eARC.
Different Like Me is a cute book about diversity and inclusion. Everyone is unique, but the things that make us the same are just as important as the differences. The book has rich illustrations and the rhyming keeps the listener engaged in the story. The book is written with a Christian perspective and would be best used in a home or in a children’s church environment.
Thank you to Our Daily Bread Publishing and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a really cute book and the illustrations were awesome. I also like that it rhymes and will keep a child's attention to the important message that everyone is different but that we're all special.
Such a cute read for the entire family. This one will be a great addition to our nightly bedtime reads.
Pictures are great too.
This is a very sweet book about how all people are different on the outside but have many of the same feelings and emotions on the inside. Beautifully illustrated, I love the message that this book sends. I received a copy of this book from netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest feedback.
This delightfully-illustrated book follows the efforts of a mixed group of children as they work co-operatively to carry a fish-shaped kite to a festival. The rhyming prose whimsically explores the concept that, while we might look different from each other in a variety of ways, express ourselves differently, and have varying strengths and weaknesses, we all have a role to play in recognising the value in others, being kind and working together. The illustrations feature children representing a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds (also illustrated by their food choices in the picnic scene!), and several differently-abled children. As this is a relatively short picture-book format, the depth into which the book goes is understandably minimal, but there is a useful section for parents and teachers at the end of the book, for use in prompting further discussion about diversity.
Different Like Me is published by Our Daily Bread Publishing, and thus not unexpectedly features opening and closing Old Testament verses (Genesis 1:27 and Psalm 139: 13-14 respectively), which sadly is likely to limit its circulation to audiences who practice either Jewish or Christian faith. While I don't in any way dispute the ethos of Our Daily Bread in including overtly religious content, I feel a little sad that this delightful book, with its universal message is unlikely to bridge the gap into the secularised and multi-faith mainstream. I would love to see a book that celebrates the differences and similarities between children of all faiths (or none), embracing the universal truths that govern us all.
Thank you to author Xochitl Dixon, illustrator Bonnie Lui, Our Daily Bread Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to review an advance copy of this title. #NetGalley

Name: Different Like Me
Author: Xochitl Dixon
Illustrator: Bonnie Liu
Genre: Children Fiction
Age: +3
Review:
This is a children book aimed to teach young readers about the uniqueness and diverse group of people. It teaches how we all are unique in our own way. We are all different in many ways: hair color, skin, hobby, personality, etc but we are all joined by this thread of oneness. God has made us different but one. It is a good book to teach children about acknowledging our differences and accepting everyone's uniqueness. It teaches us the concept of "Vashudeva Kutumbakam" which means the whole world is our family.
It also speaks about acceptance towards physically challenged children, which is w great change for the children. I really appreciate the author's intent on writing this wonderful book.
The book contains bright colourful illustrations, which is another great thing about this book.
Thankyou Netgalley and publisher for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
I had a great time reading this .I strongly urge everyone to give this book a shot!
This book gives us a deep meaning. We all are different yet member of the same world .
I have to begin this review by saying that I was already sold on the idea of the book due to the nature of the issue it was addressing. I truly believe that we need to teach kids about celebrating our differences right from the get-go and this book stands up to that. If we strip ourselves of all judgement, the world would be so much more kinder and compassionate and most of all, we will all flourish as our authentic selves with no fear of being judged, ridiculed or bullied.
The book has amazing illustrations that are very life-like, so plus points for that too! LOVED IT!
A wonderfully illustrated Christian story that helps teach all of us to embrace the beauty of diversity in each of our lives.
This book begins by emphasizing the many ways in which the narrator notices differences among him and his friends -- how they look, how they talk, their likes and dislikes. Then, the book shifts its focus to the uniting factor of feelings -- and just how children share the same emotions and feelings.
I like this book, especially for it's beautiful illustrations. I think that in using it in a classroom of young children the teacher should be explicit about the "differences" that are introduced in the book so as not to promote a colorblind orientation.
absolutely love this book! There are beautiful, thoughtful illustrations and fun, rhyming text that share an important lesson. Different Like Me would be a wonderful gift for the children in your life.
Thank you for Our Daily Bread Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
In the society we live in today, this book is a HUGE REPRESENTATION of it!! Also, this story needs to be heard by all children so they understand that it is okay to be different. I love how the story describes physical appearances as different, but when it comes to feelings and emotions, all children are the same. Everybody has feelings, no matter how they look or where they come from. We all feel happiness, sadness, angry, frustration, and excitement. This really helps children feel more confident about themselves, and understand that it does not matter how they look, because it is the inside that matters more. This really helps people struggling with identity issues and insecurities. It is actually a good story for all age groups. I LOVED THIS STORY!
Though the book is clearly well-intentioned, the bible verse with which it opens immediately and unfortunately sets a tone of trans-exclusiveness.
This is a great book for these times. As a parent with bi racial kids and special needs I cannot recommend this book enough.
This book is appealing for kids with the big colourful illustrations and it rhymes!
Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy.
This is a good tool for parents, schools and even churches to help encourage kids to be their own unique selves and God loves them no matter what.
A sweet book with an important message about how God made us all different. I loved the rhyming text and the inviting illustrations. One to read to the children in your life.
Different Like Me is an awesome book with a great massage that we need right now.. The illustrations are very colorful! I love that they included a discussion guide for parents and teachers to us. I plan to purchase this for my school library so that teachers can share this book with their classes.
This was a very cute book to read, which is one of the reasons why I loved it. But the message of the book was such a good one for times like these. The message of diversity and that everyone is different but unique, was simple enough for young readers but also well presented.
This is a simple but charming little book. I really like seeing the more diverse christian books popping up.
The illustrations are fun and accompanied by simple rhymes and repetition. Repetition is so important in early literacy and is used very well in this picture book. "I look all around me and what do I see? So many kids who are different to me" repeated throughout until the end where it instead says "I look all around me and what do I see? So many kids, not so different from me."
Cute and heartwarming.
A lovely timely book. Very inclusive with lovely illustrations, that show another story beyond the words.
A great conversation starter.
Beautiful, vibrant celebration of diversity and common humanity. Although it is clearly a Christian text with Bible quotes in the beginning and end, this book is really universal and interfaith. I was truly moved by Xochitl Dixon's letter to parents and teachers at the end of the book. The discussion questions are great and I imagine very useful for anyone trying to approach very complicated topics with children.
This is my most favorite kind of kids book. Beautiful illustrations! Fun, easy to read verses! A great message that encourages virtues!
My kids will love this book and I'll be happy to read it to them as many times as they'd like. I'll be buying this for my boys as soon as it is released!
Different Like Me is a book truly needed in today's world. It's a great lesson in celebrating diversity. While this book is christian, it can be read by people of all faiths. Christian, illustrations are gorgeous as well.
Different Like Me is a really sweet story that allows for great conversations with your kids about race, ability and more.
The artwork is absolutely gorgeous, I love the rhyming verses and it’s the perfect length (ie. my kids didn’t get sick of it before it was over). I definitely recommend.
Different Like Me is a children's story that speaks to how, although all of us may look different and feel different things, we are the same at heart, and all loved by God. It covers a range of topics from racial differences, to familial differences, to differences of ability/disability.
Although I am not a little kid anymore, I found that I almost began to cry reading this. The world right now seems to be full of hate, and I feel like a lot of people my age could really benefit from reading a book with this message. I am a firm believer that it is important to educate children at a young age about both how it is ok to feel/be different from others, and how important it is to treat people with kindness, regardless of differences. This book tackles both seamlessly!
Besides the message, the illustrations were cute and colorful (I especially liked the inclusion of the service dog). The story also features little rhymes, and the recurring saying "I look all around me and what do I see? So many kids who are different from me," which I thought was adorable. The last page also has a question list that encourages the discussion of people's differences between child and guardian, which was a nice addition.
The one thing I wished that the book touched upon were same sex relationships, as I think that is also a very important conversation to have. Even if there were just a page that said "some people have two mommies, other two daddies," or something of that nature to show that those differences, are ok too! Overall, though, I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for a way to facilitate conversations with their children about differences, and treating people with kindness (and especially those who want to do so using conversations about God).
Different Like Me is a lovely book that teaches early readers to embrace diversity and differences and also recognize the ways we're all the same on the inside. Xochitl Dixon did a great job presenting this in an engaging way for young audiences, and the illustrations are especially gorgeous. The book has some discussion questions at the end with Bible quotes, but the book itself doesn't talk about religion.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Our Daily Bread Publishing for the advance copy.
The art style is precious, and the whole book reminds me of some board books I used to have as a child. Even the rhythm of the writing reminded me of them a lot. It fills me with so much nostalgia.
Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
"Different Like Me" is a wonderful (and important) book celebrating the beauty and unique qualities of being human! Perfect story for all-ages to embrace and celebrate the things that make each of us different and the same.
Gorgeous and whimsical illustrations charm the reader on every page. Sweet rhyming text unveils a bold Biblical truth: God made each of us beautifully different, and He did so on purpose! I especially like the wonderfully diverse group of children and the service dog, based on the author's own service animal! Bookends of scripture and a parent's guide at the back provide more information for the reader wanting to dig deeper. Such a beautiful book! I highly recommend this story. I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and was not required to provide a positive review. This review is my own reaction to this book.

Content:
“God made each of us unique, but sometimes these differences can leave us feeling like a fish out of water. Celebrate our differences and uncover what we have in common on this whimsical journey that reminds readers that no matter how different, all of us are a part of God’s wonderful creation.”
Opinion:
At first, I definitely have to say that the cover and all other illustrations are so beautiful, and they suit the story so well. Bonnie Lui did a very good job in illustrating this important story. With these illustrations children can also tell their own story, even if they cannot read yet.
The text is also pretty nice. I love the message of it, and it is actually really important, especially in times like these. I think it is important that children learn such things like respecting each other and everyone is wonderful as he or she is.
Conclusion:
This book is an amazing children’s book that is important and that I would highly recommend to every child.
I loved most of the story and the illustrations were wonderful. There is a rhyme that goes throughout the story and really makes it fun to read aloud. I didn't realize that there would be a religion aspect and bible verses that I didn't think fit well. Beginning with, "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27." The book is about being different but the way it lists this verse and "male and female" was off putting. The summary of the books says it will follow diverse children through the story - I think the closed minded approach to diversity is not what we need right now.
Different Like Me is a beautiful, lyrical, faith-based story with a simple message that we all need to remember especially now – “I look around and what do I see? God made every kid different and special like me!” The book celebrates the diversity of all children, pointing out differences of race and special needs, and concludes with defining how we are all the same. Told through the eyes of a child, this story provides a wonderful tool for parents to facilitate conversations with their children about race, abilities and how we are all special.
The lyrical repetition of the story reminded me a bit of Eric Carle’s Brown Bear, Brown Bear, one of my son’s favorite stories, so naturally he gravitated toward this story. Although an adult myself, I found this book very moving, especially in this world filled with so much discrimination and hate toward others not like ourselves. I think this would be a great book for people of all ages and thank the author for this beautiful message.
Thanks to NetGalley, Xochitl Dixon and Our Daily Bread for an advance copy.
I would purchase this book for my school library. It is a titles students in PK- 3rd would enjoy because of its message. Every child has felt different at one point, yet they realize that our similarities. bring us together. Simple verse and rhyme make the story easy to read aloud. The illustrations work wonderfully with the text.
This book was a cute exploration of our differences and how they enhance our lives instead of hinder. It has a good message about celebrating differences and also highlighting the things we have in common. It does reference God as a creator and cites a few Bible verses, so avoid if you do not abide by those beliefs.
Different Like Me is a book which shows kids that God created us all the same, regardless of our differences. It shows kids that although we may differ in our appearances and capabilities, it doesn't make us worth less than everyone else.
This was a very beautiful children's book about diversity and being different. This is definitely a book I want my future children to read.
I really loved this book! While I'm in a public school and probably will not purchase this book for my school's library, it would be a very sweet gift for a young child. It would be perfect for a religious private school. This book has such a lovely rhythm and includes children of different skin colors and abilities. It is also gender neutral, too.
I adored this sweet little children's book. The illustrations were incredibly done; the whole book was bright and cute. I think my favorite part was the representation of kids that don't usually get represented. The message that was being presented was clearly articulated. I think this is a super important book for children to have while growing up, especially right now. It was a super cute and quick read, and I loved it.
This book is releasing at an important time in our culture. With multicultural children working together in peace and harmony, it's a beautiful picture of what our society should strive for. The story will help children realize that in many ways we are the same, but we are also different and need to embrace those differences. Readers will enjoy the lyrical text and colorful illustrations. It's a true celebration of life!
Different Like Me by Xochitl Dixon is a children's storybook from Christian publisher Our Daily Bread. It's told from the perspective of a child who is looking around at all the diverse children around him or her and noting how different they all are, and how much that makes them the same where it counts. It's a very cute story with captivating illustrations. My 2.5 year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed reading through it with me and pointing at all the pictures of the kids and their enormous kites.
The story opens and closes with Bible verses, and follows it up with a set of 9 discussion questions to lead a conversation about diversity and acceptance with your children and students.
The pros: This book does a good job of pointing out the obvious differences kids are likely to see around them, such as skin colour and body type differences, visible disabilities, and differences in language. It aims to normalize these differences, and show that everyone is special and beautiful in their own way.
The cons: This story doesn't do anything substantial to actually discuss race issues, accessibility, or invisible disabilities. It's also deeply and overtly a Christian text, which may not be for everyone.
Different Like Me by Xochitl Dixon is a sweet book that teaches children that despite the differences the see on the outside, they have many similarities with the other children that they meet. The gorgeous illustrations by Bonnie Lui add to the visual impact as you follow from the perspective of a fish kite in the background of each scene. Children can find strong references points in meeting friends, going to school or even having a meal. While the target audience is for preschoolers, older children would find the book equally charming and the illustrations give a lot of items to look for in the background. This would be a great book to give as a gift or to help start a conversation of what it mean to be different and the same..
Note: I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via NetGalley and the publishers.
It is a beautiful book that talks about how even though they are different, children are not really that different.
A book that gives good energy.
I've recommended this book in several mom groups since reading the review copy. It's important for children to see diversity in their books. When reading it together we talked about the child in the wheelchair and the one who "uses a cane to see".
A lovely, divers childrens book with an important message. I particularly enjoyed the rhymes, but the illustrations were nice, too. It won't make the cut for my kids' bookshelf because I don't want the Christian message there, but to anyone who doesn't mind it or is even looking for it I can only recommend.
I like how the author starts and ends the book with a verse from the bible. The illustrations are colorful and bright and would draw in any reader, especially young children. Different like me includes boys, girls, black, white, brown and even children with disabilities. I like the fact that when children see this book they can see a representation of themselves. I love how the author included all things that make us different, but alike in a lot of ways. This book acknowledges the differences and acceptance of everyone uniqueness. It teaches children to love who they are. This is a great book for parents to read to their child to help them identify with loving all people regardless of how different they may look. Thank you to @NetGalley @OurDailyBreadPublishing #XochitlDixon for the advanced copy of #DifferentLikeMe #NetGalley #books #childrenfiction #christian
UGGGHHHH. I like this book, but I also hate this book. Why do you have to bring God into a perfectly great story. This book starts off by talking about kids' differences, and then brings it together in how they are all the same. It has wonderfully colorful illustrations, a great rhyming pattern, but the entire thing is blown to pieces with “god made”. It has now taken a book that I would have loved to read for story time and threw it out of the pile. Such a shame for such a lovely book.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the e-ARC.
It's a children's picture book with little text in verse teaching kids to see that there are different kids, skin color, body shape, disabilities, etc but we are all the same, we are human.
This is a perfect book to teach your child to respect people, especially, different ones, and to treat them with kindness and, when possibly, work in team.
The illustrations are so beautiful and stunning. I recommend this.
This is the cutest rhyming picture book about how everyone is made in God's image no matter your looks, abilities, culture, or preferences. It also highlights how we all have emotions and experiences that can tie us all together. The book depicts a range of children and is such a sweet and beautifully illustrated story. From the range of children to the large and colorful kites, the illustrations make you want to spend longer on each page soaking it all in. The last page of the book is a note to parents and teachers to help guide discussions to help kids appreciate and celebrate the beauty of diversity.
This is a wonderful faith based book about celebrating the uniqueness that makes up humanity. The story explores the ways that children are different, but also how they are the same. There is also a great amount of inclusion of abilities depicted, which I loved. I also really enjoyed that it included that families can also look different. Overall this was a wonderful book!
Read arc via netgalley for honest review.
This book was not for us. We hadn’t realised it was religious. We like the overall diversity message, but really didn’t care for the end, sorry. Great book overall though and lots of people will love it.
Given the time in our nation I was almost moved to tears reading this story. It has such a simple beautiful message -- "I look around and what do I see? God made every kid different and special like me!" This book starts out by pointing out unique differences in all the children. (This story is very inclusive of children of all different races, and even children with special needs.) Then at the end it defines how we are all the same. It is a lovely story written through the eyes of a child. The illustrations are beautiful and it has questions in the back that would guide parents and teachers in discussion.
I can’t wait to get my hands on this book! Beautiful to look at AND to read. Especially loved the suggested discussion questions at the back to facilitate necessary conversations!
A adorable book about embracing the differences in all of us and appreciating everyone. A very cute book for kids! The art style was so cute and charming. This book has a great message and I would highly recommend it for all kids!
A wonderful story of how God made all of us different, and how He made all of us special! A beautiful message of inclusivity with a religious aspect. This book will be perfect for me to share with my preschoolers as I am especially looking for books dealing with inclusivity for this year's curriculum.
The illustrations are beautiful, and I've always enjoyed picture books that are in rhyming verse!
I received an advance copy of this book from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Our Daily Bread Publishing for gifting me an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book has an amazing message for children and it’s done very well. The illustrations are so sweet, and I love the inclusion of different races and disabilities in them. The story itself is simple, yet really drives home the message of how even though we may look different on the outside, we still feel the same things on the inside and we’re actually similar in many ways. It’s a very cute story that reminds us that we’re all special.
This is the prefect book for what is going on in the world right now. Even without all the turmoil, it's perfect. I love the colors, the simplicity, the inclusivity.
This is a children's book I will definitely be purchasing to share with my future children one day. It explores how we all have differences but we are also very similar. It has children of all different walks of life throughout the book along with a bunch of different animal balloons and I thought it was a really good and created way to start conversations with children and a really good book to have.
Book Review—Different Like Me
We’re ALL different. That’s the message of this new picture book.
We’re ALL alike. That’s the message of this new picture book too.
Different Like Me
written by Xochitl Dixon, illustrated by Bonnie Lui
published by Our Daily Bread for Kids (August 2020)
hardcover picture book, 32 pages, 9 x 9 inches
Cultural diversity, check. Physical disabilities, check. Communication differences, check.
But the kids in Different Like Me are also very much alike.
I love for children from different ethnic backgrounds to be able to see themselves in picture books. The bright, exuberant illustrations in this book do that and pair well with the whimsical text.
An opening refrain about differences changes as the diverse group of children works together to wrangle a huge fish balloon to its surprising—and perfect—destination:
“I look all around me, and what do I see?
So many kids, not so different from me.”
It’s what’s inside, our feelings, that make us more alike than different.
And as the book ends, the refrain changes again:
“I look all around me, and what do I see?
God made every kid different …
and special, like me!”
Because there’s more that unites us. We’re all made by God, in His image.
Scriptures from Genesis 1 and Psalm 139 open and close the book, like treasured bookends, to make this point.
The book’s dedication includes “anyone who’s ever felt weird, out of place, or misunderstood.” That’s just about everyone! Different Like Me helps children appreciate everyone’s differences and assures them that we all have a special place in the world.
loved the whole book. It was great, it showed how every kid is different and yet they are all the same. We may look different, act differently, have a disability but we are all the same, we feel the same way, happy, sad, angry, grumpy, joy.
Such a cute book! The story follows the narrator as they point out the differences they have with other children. The soon realize that maybe they aren't so different at all. I love the illustrations. They are bright and colorful. The illustrations show quite a diverse group of children (disabilities, different hair, different ethnicity) which is so important. The book does have religious references so it would be best for at home readings or church groups. In the back of the book there are questions/discussion guides to use with your child. This is definitely a book I would consider adding to my daughters library.
A copy of this book was made available to me through netgalley. These opinions are my honest review.
Such a beautiful book releasing at the right time! Celebrating our differences yet pointing out how we are similar. The rhyming text along with the beautiful illustrations keeps young ears engaged. This would be a wonderful gift for any young child in your life.
I received an electronic ARC from Our Daily Bread Publishing through NetGalley.
I like the message of this book but wish it had a more immediately positive framing. The first half of the book is about differences and doesn't address that differences aren't good or bad. Books like Same, Same, but Different by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw point out differences but immediately explain how differences aren't a bad thing. Children's need see the correlation that we are different but that's okay more quickly to make the association. I love that this is a Hispanic author and a book that shows diverse characters.
Good idea message-wise for the Christian community. Wouldn't use it in my classroom.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a sweet, beautifully-written and -illustrated poem about how we are all different, but that God made us all special and—in many ways—the same.
The poem weaves in and out of illustrations of children who have all kinds of differences, but who work together and help each other. I find the book incredibly timely and relatable, and helps children understand why we are all valuable from a Christian perspective.
This is a lovely picture book with an important message that is simply and sweetly written. The illustrations are very appealing. The book is intended to appeal to children and is not heavy-handed in its messaging, which is much appreciated in the realm of children's books! Thank you for an advanced copy in exchanage for review.
This book is so damn beautiful and very much needed.
It's always better to talk about the issues of race, different people we are going to come across right during the formative years so kids understand what is being meant by we are all human beings and no one race or community shouldn't get mistreated (as kids learn from what they see and observe).
We adults are at a loss for words when it comes to such topics on how to explain in a way that they understand.
This book does justice to this.
The illustration is like a perfect dream.
Everything is perfect!
I need this one as a physical copy when it comes out.
The thing to think is it is difficult to change ourselves as adults when we are brought up in a segregated environment. So why not start from here with such books to change all that?
Thank you NetGalley for this beautiful ARC.
This book is beautiful and so important! The illustrations are beautifully done; they are bright and colorful and engaging for children. And the message is one we adults need to share with our children! It celebrates diversity while showing how we can all relate to other people. I loved this book and am planning on getting a hard copy of it when it releases so I can share it with my children over and over again.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This picture book celebrates differences in children that make them unique and special. The bible scriptures at the the beginning and at the end of the story centers God's handiwork in creating human beings in his image and likeness. The illustrations feature ethnically diverse and differently-abled children who find joy in playtime and interactions with each other at the park. They learn from their mistakes and express gratitude to God for life and living each day to the fullest. The rhythmic lines and catchy phrases create an interplay of language that grabs young readers' attention. This picture book makes a great addition to households and churches. It teaches value in self-acceptance, grace, joy, and love among children.
This picture book starts off as a play group of school-age kids meet up and have a picnic. The group is made up of children who are suppose to represent different races, ethnicities, and abilities. The star of the book is a young girl who brings her Japanese kite shaped like a fish. The fish is animated, so its facial expressions change with the mood of the story. Drama occurs when it gets caught in a cluster of trees. The text of the story has rhyming lines describing the differences and similarities of people in general, and illustrated by the interactions of the kids. The bright images invite the eye to look closer for details. The ending is a little unexpected, so this is a delight, too. The book begins and ends with scripture and a section with questions can be used in churches, homes, and Christian schools.
Thank you to Our Daily Bread and NetGalley for the digital galley. My reviews and opinions are my own.
Different from Me is a very cute book about accept people differences. I think this is a very important subject for children to learn young and Xóchitl Dixon did a great job presenting the topic in a way children will understand. The illustrations are beautiful. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone with children.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What a wonderful story to explain that while we all may look different, we all feel the same emotions!
Right now, I am trying to teach my three year old daughter about emotions and being kind to others. She is having a hard time sharing. While I'm sure she doesn't yet notice the differences between other children and herself, she still needs to learn to be kind. This book is a perfect edition to her growing learning library to explain that other children may look different and come from different backgrounds, but we all still can be hurt and feel love just like "me".
The illustrations in this book are adorable and full of color. Each child in the story looks different however they all still relate and interact with each other beautifully.
This book is Christian based with passages from the Bible as inspiration to further conversations with children.
As an adoptive family with a biracial child, we love finding books to add to our collection that celebrate diversity, acceptance and love from a Christian perspective. This beautiful new children’s book, a first from author Xochitl Dixon, is just perfect for our young daughter’s bookshelf as we explore the various ways God has created us and the people around us. I adore that through the beautiful illustrations in this book, we can discover and celebrate children with different skin tones, body types, disabilities and even likes and dislikes.
For a young child, this book colorfully and simply demonstrates that families or friends don’t have to match and may have different cultural interests and food preferences, but reminds children that inside we still experience the same feelings, fears and joys.
It also reminds children in a soft and gentle way that we are all good at something and have kindness to share with the reminder that God created us all different but special in His own image. The illustrations offer the cutest little journey with a big fish balloon who joins a large group of diverse balloons and is yet another precious reminder of togetherness and community. I enjoyed the scripture at both the beginning and the end of this book and can appreciate how this book will spark excellent conversations about diversity and differences.
A top recommendation from our family to yours for children ages 2+.
This was a great book for children about celebrating diversity! It has a nice Christian intro and Bible verses throughout the book. I also loved the illustrations and the text per page was short enough that kids won’t lose interest.
I love how this book was multicultural and showed how differences need to be celebrated. This is the perfect book to incorporate into all classrooms, no matter what grade or subject level. I will be purchasing a copy right away. I can see how many discussions will be started using this book as a model in classrooms.
I loved this delightful kids story. The illustrations are wonderful! So colorful and full of life. The books starts pointing out all the differences in kids. Then it goes into how they are all the same also. A great story for young kids. I Highly recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley, Xochitl Dixon and Our Daily Bread Publishing for an Arc in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved this children’s book & very much intend in buying a copy for my boys! Not only is it sweet & easy to read but has such an important message written for a way that even the littlest of children will be able to understand. One thing I loved was how inclusive the the book was & how the illustrations really did keep every child in mind, so that when reading they can find a child that they can relate with. Also another note the illustrations are beautiful & I can only imagine how pretty the hard copy would be! This is a perfect book with a great message for children from 1-100!
A short book in length but profound in meaning.
It is a book that promotes understanding and avoidance of judgments. Despite the fact that the primary audience for this book is children, this book holds in it a message that goes beyond all ages and time. That message is that God created us all unique and that our differences should be what bring us together and not apart.
This is a message that must be promoted now especially with the Black Lives Matter movement still very active. Everyone is unique and perfect in their own way despite their looks or language.
Moreover, I enjoyed the writing style, it was rather poetic. As well as the drawings that were so cute and creative.
It creates a beautiful wholesome feeling.
A wonderful kids book expressing the beautiful uniqueness of humans, and how God designed it that way for a plan and purpose. <3
In a time when diversity is on the forefront this is a fantastic book to share with young children. The book starts with showing how we are different and it covers a multitude of differences. The book then shows how even with those differences we are all very similar. I like that it does not just highlight differences and try to make us just be okay with those differences, it also shows why we are so similar and should not treat people differently. so often we tell kids what to do but not necessary why. You can tell a child "yes, he is different than you, but treat him the same you would anyone else, but we do not tell them why. Yes, we should just be nice to all, but this book gives more and helps younger kids understand, The illustrations are very cute and colorful. I am sure if this is being read aloud they will appreciate the pictures when shown. I am a Christian and appreciate the religion aspect of this book, however I am not sure this could be read in public schools which is a shame. The end of the book has information for continued conversation with children some of that is Christian based, some is not. I believe with some creative thinking public school teachers might be able to make this work. I hope so! It is so important to teach our children that while we are different, we are also the same. I am giving this book a solid 5 start review. Thank you to NG, the author, the illustrator, and publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for a honest review.
We are all unique in our differences. We are dark and fair and all colors in between. We follow different religions of faith and speak different languages. We belong to different countries. Some speak with their hands, see with sticks and can move only in a wheelchair. Despite our differences we share the same feelings of hope, despair and yearn to be cared and loved by others.
In this book, a group of diverse children are walking with a balloon to a surprise destination. As they make their journey, they make new friends and explore the differences, similarities and learn how to overcome a hurdle together.
This picturebook touches on the most important concept that even though children look different, we are all human and have to look after one another. I loved the colorful illustrations and the fish balloon is a ‘cool’ character with interesting emotions.
Different Like Me // by Xochitl Dixon // illustrated by Bonnie Lui
Different Like Me focuses all on the differences between us all, whether those are skin color, hair, language, hobbies, abilities, etc. But at the same time, it also shows us how we have many things in common despite those differences, such as our feelings. It teaches us that every person is special in their own way, whether they are similar or different to someone else. While this book starts and ends with a biblical verse, what I enjoyed about it is that it is a great story with a great lesson whether you are Christian or not. This book is very easily adapted to be used without religion in mind if that is something that is needed. The illustrations are beautiful and really enhance the story as well. For those interested in digging deeper into the theme of this book with their children, there are some great questions at the end of the book to encourage further discussions!
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review!
This book has a valuable lesson about the Christian belief of all being made in the image of God - even if we look, act, think, and feel differently, all people are equal in the eyes of God. One of the most valuable parts of this title is the Parent Guide to help begin discussion about this book's lesson.
This was very cute and I adored the art style.
i loved seeing kids of all different skin types and abilities being featured and love the overall theme.
I thought that this was a lovely story and I loved the images used.
The book was easy to follow and the story was easy to understand too.
The book does have some biblical verses in it but I thought it was great and skipped those as I am not religious so this book really can be read by anyone as it has a great point to get over.
The book is set perfectly for the target audience – it is 5 stars from me for this one!
I loved the message this book sends... Noticing everyone's physical differences but by the end realizing that people aren't so different after all. The only criticism I have is the inclusion of God at the very end, as it assumes the reader believes in God and that lost people believe in God, but that kind of goes against the message the author is trying to relay.
When I saw this title as an option to request I could not read it soon enough, this book is just beyond amazing in so many ways. As a momma to a three year old, one of my biggest hopes is that she’ll always strive to BE different, and welcome differences in the others around her. Seeing the beautiful images of these children playing together, and hearing these words along with them spark such joy for us BOTH. A truly wonderful children’s book that can be appreciated by ALL.
Bonnie Lui’s illustrations are perfection, the colors and details are just beautiful. I just don’t have enough words to convey how much I loved the palette used in this title, we will definitely be buying a copy of this must have book.
Most inclusive childrens book that I have ever seen. The title does a great job of showing how everyone is different, startign with us. Great words of wisdom that will make the world more accpetable for everyone and make everyone feel accepted.
What a wonderful and creative book for children (and adults)! The artwork is beautiful. Inspirational and adorable.
Thank you to Our Daily Bread Publishing and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion!
Different Like Me by Xochitl Dixon is a wonderful children's book talking about the physical differences of children, whether it be race, hair type, body type, or ability level. But, it also talks about how, despite those differences, we all have similar feelings of hope, joy, sadness and kindness.
This book includes quotes from the Bible as well as discussion tips of God's creation at the end which may dissuade some people. Despite this, the message is lovely and important in terms of race, gender and ability.
Different Like Me is a stunningly beautiful picture book focusing on the unique qualities of people.
The rhyming scheme is simple yet makes it way more fun to sing along and read the song. I love that the book is diverse and includes many different people in it, which plays right into the message.
There is religious comments in it, so buyer beware if you don't want to see anything about God. It's not preachy though, only suggesting God made everyone different for a reason - to be special. So no harm, no foul.
Three out of five stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and Our Daily Bread Publishing for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
Different Like Me is a wonderful children’s book by Xochitl Dixon. I thought it was a great way to teach children that we all are different and we should embrace each other’s differences. The colorful and vibrant illustrations by Bonnie Lui was a perfect touch. It covers a variety of differences that we may come across. Including: skin color, disabilities, emotions, languages and cultures. I love that it shows that we are all part of God’s creation.
Different Like Me is getting a very well deserved five plus star. I highly recommend it for children and families who want to teach and learn about the differences of everyone and how we are all loved by God. Especially for children who are in the age range of three and six years of age.
I received Different Like Me from the publisher. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
What a wonderful colorful book this was. Perfect for young children or a preschool or kindergarten class.
Wow this book is such a win! Thank you!! I cannot wait to read this with my children. The illustrations were beautiful, the words easily understood, the rhyme and pacing perfect for read aloud time. Great job!
In the midst of what it feels like an overwhelming storm of new books addressing racial inequality and social justice, we encounter Different Like Me by Xochitl Dixon. Xochitl gives us a breather by delivering a Biblical perspective for diversity, focusing on how God created us all and without compromising God given standard for justice, love, and righteousness.
My first fear when seeing the book was that the it would try to sell us identity politics nor so-called Evangelical Liberalism. I am happy that that is not the case.
I am very thankful that the book DOES address what the leftist are neglecting to address in their self-righteous crusade for social justice, and that is those who with special needs.
My only critique to this book would be that the gospel of Jesus Christ as the only one thing that demolishing the dividing wall of hostility between people groups is not present. Yet, I understand that that is not the goal of this book since it only focuses on Creation.
Both parents and children will benefit from reading this book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a taste of what Biblical diversity is.
I would proudly sell it in my store and will definitely buy it for myself to read to my sons.
Different Like Me, written by Xochitl Dixon, is a darling book about what makes children different and the common identities that unite us all. The illustrations in this book were absolutely stunning and my favorite part of the story.
Different Like Me is a great book for the kindergarten, grade 1 level. It shows a myriad of ways kids are different but in an age appropriate level. I love that there are discussion questions at the back to bring the topic further into the children's minds. The pictures were vibrant and you could see differences in the pictures which the children could spot . Very cute book. . #netgalley #ourdailybreadpublishing
Thank you to #NetGalley for the chance to read and review this book. I read it with my daughter and we absolutely LOVED it. It has such an important message, one that is especially needed in the world right now. That while we may all look or act different, we are also similar in many ways, and those are the things that count. It was beautiful to see so many different representations throughout. The illustrations were STUNNING! Highly recommend this one.
I was excited to read this book because it is exactly what we need right now. A positive look at children they may look different but are all the same. The illustrations are beautiful and easy to keep a child's attention. I love the way the story rhymes and is easy fir children to follow along. The message is simple yet the World struggles as different to some mean not as important.
We all hurt, laugh, play and love the same regardless of the color of our skin. Some may have disabilities but they are the same as everyone else. The book is a great tool to use to teach children that we are all the same. I loved how the author includes children wearing glasses, in a wheelchair, or other differences all playing together. Children are innocent and don’t judge others because they may look or act differently.
I would recommend this book to every parent, grandparent, church, daycare and school. I will be purchasing a copy of this book for my grandchild. The author includes questions at the end of the book for parents or teachers to use to discuss the lesson taught in the book. Come experience a group of children having fun together as they make friends and experience the message that God loves us.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Different Like Me is a very timely book. In today’s world which is so full of division we need things to draw us together. Xochitl Dixon does an excellent job in this picture book to point out that everyone is different, yet we are all created in God’s image. Her text brings out many of the ways in which people are different from each other - appearance, abilities, ways of getting around, and more. We are all different in some way.
This would be a great book for a teacher or librarian to read to a class, especially a class where one member is being made fun of for something they have no control over. I appreciate the fact that Xochitl Dixon includes some discussion questions for parents and teachers to use with their kiddos.
I love Bonnie Lui’s illustrations. They go well with the text. They are childlike and will definitely appeal to the children the book is intended for. I can envision little ones sitting and looking at this book on their own once an adult has introduced them to it. Different LIke Me would be a great book to include in a Mock Caldecott unit.
Different Like Me would be an excellent addition to the picture book section of a K-12 Christian School library. Pre-school through lower elementary children will enjoy it.
I want to thank Celebrate Lit for the complimentary copy of Different Like Me. This is my honest review.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Different Like Me is a different kind of kids book because it teaches children that no matter how different they may be, it’s ok. That we are all unique to God, and He still loves us just as we are. Sadly, there is so much division in the world today, it’s easy for kids and adults alike to struggle with this issue. This book is for our world today, and I think it should be in every household, school, daycare, church and anywhere else children may be.
Author Xochitl (So-Cheel) E. Dixon Dixon opens her heart and speaks to each of us through the wonderful and adorable characters in this book. I love each of them and their differences. She includes scripture in the book as well as discussion questions to help kids open up and share their feelings if they want to. Especially anyone who has disabilities or anything different than others.
And I can’t forget Bonnie Lui’s amazing illustrations. They are absolutely adorable and fit with the story so perfectly. I love that she includes about every way a child may be different. And how special is this, when a child can actually see a picture of their different self! Everything in this book is just wonderful in every way! This book is a 5 plus stars all the way!
A special thanks to the author/publisher and netgalley for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
I have to say that everyone is unique. But then, we know this right? We’re all taught this from a young age. But are we really taught to see everyone the same? Are we taught to look at others who aren’t as smart or who have a different skin color than us as different or less than?
In our household, we believe everyone has the opportunity to be something unique and special. Some people might throw away their opportunity to parrot others, but they get that opportunity.
This is a sweet children’s book. It’s going to be staying on our shelves for the foreseeable future. We live in an area that is not very racially diverse. It’s very rural midwest states if that helps you picture what it’s like. But my children have friends of different skin tones and don’t see them in different ways. They’re all their friends.
Cute book. I highly recommend you find a copy and get it on your shelf today! I also encourage you to recommend this book at your library. The more times someone requests a book the more likely it is that a library will get it on their shelves.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
I love this sweet children’s picture book with its endearing, well-written rhyming text and colorful illustrations of a variety of children. The message is beautifully presented and is so needed in our current day. The book is one I would like to give to every child, and grownups will enjoy it too. Based upon truth and biblical principles, it offers inclusive words rather than divisive ones. Hopefully, it can bring joy and will help everyone feel good about themselves as well as model proper attitudes toward others. We see children of various colors and abilities, including one in a wheelchair and a blind boy, enjoying life together in the pictures that accompany the words. And a loving dog adds delight too. You can tell this comes from the author’s heart. And the last page offers advice to adults and questions to discuss with children. Well done, Xochitl Dixon! I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Absolutely adored this cute but important read, showing differences between others in a world that can be hard and unkind. Beautifully written and illustrated
This is such an adorable book that reminds us that we are ALL made in HIS Image. That we are all unique and beautiful. I read this book to my 9 and 7 year old boys. It was the perfect book to read to them while all this chaos is going on. One reminder that I made sure to drive home is: We may all look different on the outside, but God designed us all to have the same set of emotions on the inside.I always tell my children, that God gave you many talents and made you like noone else - you want to embrace that. What you do with your talents is your gift to God. This book is beautifully illustrated, it has amazing pictures.
I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program, all thoughts are my own.
It's so important to make children understand the differences that prevail in organisms. It just makes it easier for them to accept these differences as they grow up.
The book talks about all types of differences in a fun rhyming manner, making it Interesting and Useful for Children. It mentions Biblical quotes to underline that all beings are equal. The book talks about appearing different yet feeling the same things!
I loved the Beautiful illustrations which made the book all the more engaging!
This book will definitely make a great addition to a child's collection!!
This is a cute story to teach children that everyone is different but also the same in the way that they have feelings and that God made each and every one of them. The words had a lyrical movement to them. The illustrations were great. I would recommend this book for kids ages 3-5.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book for my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read it to my kids! This book has a wonderful message and adorable illustrations. I like how the book discusses all kinds of differences- physical differences (including disabilities) and personality differences, and then talks about the way we are all the same.
Great book about people not only looking different but also being differently-abled. I loved that this book included a wheelchair bound child and a blind child. No matter what we look like, we all feel the same - all get worried, happy, etc. Lovely story.
The timing of this books publication is so amazing. As a mother of small children, the message of this book struck a chord and made my heart sing. I love how the author wove scripture into the beginning and end of this book to tie the message together. God has bigger plans than we may ever know and it starts with each of us being individually and wonderfully made. The illustrations and rhythmic tone makes this a wonderful read for kids young and old!
Thank you for the opportunity to review this book. All views are honest and given voluntarily.
Cute illustrations and a diverse range of characters doing normal kid things together. Premise is by no means new or unique, but there is added religious layers including the back section of engaging questions for parents/teachers and children. Illustrations are quite lovely, I always like to see the greenery and modernized versions of cartoonish characters. Overall, just your typical diversity is good book!
We may look different and have different likes and talents, but ultimately we are all the same inside. A poignant lesson for child and adult alike! This book beautifully illustrates how God’s creativity shines through in mankind. Some of us are tall. Some are short. Some have red hair. Some like pizza while others like sushi. Some are artistic while others are athletic. The illustrations masterfully show the rainbow of skin colors and the diversity of what it means to be made in God’s image. And while this book exquisitely explains our differences, it concludes with reminding us that we have more in common than it seems on the outside. Inside we are all the same. When I read this book with my son, he loved the illustrations and connected strongly with the prose. There is an additional “for the parents/teachers” section at the end of the book for extension activities. This is a book every home needs.
This is a great little book about diversity. Explaining how everyone is different from the inside and out. Teaching kids that there are different languages including sign language, skin/eye/hair colour, some use a wheelchair and others have service dogs, kids all have different likes for activities, foods, etc. In the end children all feel the same - happy, hurt, sad, excited etc. God made everyone different and that is okay.
The book starts and ends with a bible verse but isn't necessarily for only Christian families. There is a Question section at the end that would be great for church groups or families home with a Christian background to help teach Bible verses to young children.
I loved the artwork and that this book isn't just about ethnic background. They include children with disabilities and that children like different kids of foods and activities.
I give this a 5 out of 5 stars as a great learning tool.
Different Like Me by Xochitl Dixon is my new favorite children's book for so many reasons. This is a powerful rhyming book for young children to teach diversity, differences, and being unique. The author includes a variety of emotions, abilities, and races all with the similar theme: God made every kid different and special. I love how the author expresses the beauty of differences while showing that there are similarities as well. I definitely would love to add a copy of this book to my kindergarten classroom library as well as my home library. Also, the illustrations are beautiful and connect very well with the content being explained.
Thank you to Netgalley and publishers for providing an advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
Disclaimer: I'm not religious, so I wasn't sure if this was a book "for me" or better suited to someone else. I was pleasantly surprised that this is a universal message, and only the last page is really bible-oriented. It's a simple and lovely story suitable to all people about how we all feel the same things no matter how we are different.
This is a sweet book about being different but also all being made in God's image and having the same feelings and emotions that God has given each of us. I think some of this went over my kids' heads because they didn't know what it even was (like the wheelchair - I don't think they have ever actually been around one to know what it's for) so I had to stop and explain before going on. However, I don't see that as a problem since the book already encourages further discussion at the end anyway. The illustrations were excellent and brightly colored for catching children's eyes.
This is a short story about how every kid is different and yet, perfect.
I loved the illustrations, the way the writing flows and the whole message behind it. I also loved how inclusive it was, mentioning kids from different cultures and kids who have disabilities.
I didn't like however how it opens with a Bible verse and ends with questions about the relationship between children and god (among other questions that are not as bad.)
As a kindergarten teacher, I would suggest skipping the Bible verses and the questions at the end. Celebrating our differences is great, but indoctrination isn't, plus, not everyone believes in the Bible god.
Other than that, yeah, it's lovely and I think kids will love it too.
This book is a beautiful story about teaching children that although we may all look different on the outside, inside we are all the same.
The verses are short, sweet and rhyme which I feel will keep the attention of all children. And not only does the story cover the colours of people's skin, it also covers disabilities and blindness.
The illustrations are very colourful and eye-catching too.
Lovely little story, with an equally lovely message that I think is perfect for all children to read.
Different Like Me by Xochitl Dixon is a children's fiction book about diversity. It is gloriously illustrated with rhyming verses that will teach children that it's okay to be different; that it's okay not to like the same things; and that it's okay to have different hair and skin color.
A wonderful book to read with your child or grandchild at bedtime or story time. I loved this book. Five stars. I'm
definitely adding this book to my gift list.
I received a digital copy of this book from Our Daily Bread Publishing through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
I got this on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!
I absolutely loved this book! The art, the message, the prose, everything! I really think this should be used in school to help cherish individuality and community even though we all are different.
My only wish would be that the blind kid did not have those VERY stereotypical Hollywood black sunglasses. Like, ordinary sunglasses or no sunglasses would have been fine.
A good resource to explain the similarity in lived experiences to children. We might look different in our skin color or where we live, but the basis of underlying experiences are the same. The heart of the book is the shared human experience. There is so much value and dignity of living presented in these stories. Questions at the back of the book help to lead discussion and base activities for kids.
Oh my love! This book is a delight! The diversity, the ability levels, the positive language, it's all here and I am HERE FOR IT! What an incredible picture book for kiddos to see all of God's creations playing together, being equally loved by our Creator. While we look or act different on the outside, Xochitl shares the important message that we're actually NOT that different after all. YES! I love this!
Different Like Me is a children's book that every family needs. With illustrations that pull you right in, the short but heartfelt words make it easy for any child to understand that someone's differences are not to be feared or laughed at, but to be embraced and respected. I love the phrasing of the words and how the illustrations interact with one another! This is definitely a book my youngest nephew would enjoy whole heartedly! 5 out of 5 stars! Thanks Netgalley for access to these motivational books!
This is a super-duper adorable book, particularly for children. Kids need to be educated regarding human values carefully and subtly without injuring their own emotions as well; this book does precisely that. I had a smile throughout while reading it. The pictures are so elegant, vivid, and vibrant, despite being a grown-up, I couldn't help but continue gazing at it. The lyrical and rhyming expressions take it up a notch further.
'I look all around me, and what do I see? / So many kids, not so different from me.' It's the best way that the book could be summed up, everyone so diverse yet so alike. This is my first-ever children's book, and I ain't disappointed a bit. I guess this could clearly be a part of the Pre-KG curriculum to instill moral values. Please do read this one; I am positive you'll enjoy it.
Thank you, NetGalley and Our Daily Bread Publishing, for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange for a review.
Different Like Me is a great book to incorporate into Sunday School or your home library. It tells the story of how all of us were created in God's eyes. He designed us to be different and unique in our own ways. The illustrations are beautiful. There are all types of kids. It is a good story with a great, simple message.
A great book on being made in God’s image and a good reminder to look at others as fellow image bearers. My daughter enjoyed reading this with me!
"Different Like Me" is a fabulous book for small children! I how the book represented so many diverse groups of children including children with health impairments or conditions. It was great that the book's main message is that even though we may be different on the outside we are all the same on the inside. The illustrations were great. I will be purchasing this book for my daughter's collection and for some friend's children as well.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is a wonderful book on how God created us all uniquely and how that we are all different on the outside, but we all experience the same emotions. I loved the illustrations--they are beautiful! I loved that the pictures included pictures kids with disabilities--that is often overlooked in our society. There is also a discussion guide in the back that would be great for family devotion or a classroom setting. Highly recommend! Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book! (I also shared the review on Goodreads)
The book is beautifully illustrated. That said, I had not realised this was a religious text. And while the message is lovely: "we are not all so different", the psalm quote about God on the very first page bothered me for the simple fact that it cuts off people who have different religious beliefs right away. Ironically, it feels culturally insensitive. I know it isn't the goal, this book is aimed at Christian children, so they understand God wants them to be tolerant... but I wish it had been done in a more inclusive way. The quote at the end was sufficient, I thought, because the tolerance message is important to everyone, no matter how they look and think.
I thought this was a great book embracing everyone’s differences. It is well illustrated showing other ethnicities and physical impairments. It teaches others that even if someone looks or acts different, we are all somewhat the same. We all have feelings and we should be mindful of that when interacting with others. My children enjoyed the book because they have a 10 year old cousin who is partially blind and they have a few classmates in wheelchairs. My children are also mixed ethnicities and this book is a great tool for them to learn about others.
Thank you Netgalley and Our Daily Bread Publishing for the opportunity to read a copy.
Five stars. A sweet picture book with rhyming text about the ways children are different and the same, regardless of how they look, regardless of abilities or disabilities, regardless of hobbies or interests, or where they come from.. All children have emotions. All children act silly or get grumpy at times, etc.. Endearing illustrations throughout.
Different Like Me helps children to understand that people are different, but not really. They might look different or sound different, but everyone has the same feelings and fears. I especially appreciated the author included children with disabilities, a group that is often overlooked. Children want to know why someone is different and this book shows love and acceptance of others. Good for elementary and preschool learners as well as people of all ages with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
Different Like Me, written by Xochitl Dixon and illustrated by Bonnie Lui, is a beautiful 32 page book that helps children to learn about other children of all kinds. The story points out children come in different color, shapes and sizes with different hair and smile. They like different foods and activities. Some may even get around differently by using wheel chairs and canes. But some things are the same, we all have the same feeling and do the same things.
I just love this story. It is well written and beautifully illustrated. It helps to explain to young children that God made us all different but special. I especially think this would be a helpful book to help children understand that some children have special needs as well. I also love the pictures in this story. They are bright and colorful filled with children doing many things.
I received an ebook copy of this book from the author and Our Daily Bread Publishing through NetGalley, this is my honest review.
Great rhyming story that highlights our differences and what makes us beautiful. There are Bible verses at the beginning and end, but teachers can easily omit them without interfering with the story.
I have been working as a primary school teacher for 12 years, and believe me it still hurts when I hear: ‘I do not want to play with him, he has a dark skin!’ , or ‘Mommy say I shouldn’t sit next to her, she’s poor and has no branded sneakers. She can’t be my friend, we’re different!’ Children are not born with prejudices, we as parents and as a society make them to become. Stigma often exists because of knowledge built on stereotypes. Lack of information, misconceptions, isolation and segregation perpetuate such stereotypes - so the best way to address stigma is to break stereotypes. But how do we do that?
It should start at an early age and reading books is a fantastic choice. Not only will it reduce prejudice, it will also encourage the child to think and draw their own conclusions. For that very reason ‘Different Like Me’ by Xochitl Dixon is a must read for all families.
Using rhyme and vivid illustrations, the author depicts the world around us in a very interesting way. All children are different, skin color, eye color, appearance. Not everyone wants the same things and activities, not everyone has the same hobby. And the choice of food can be different. But all children are exactly the same in one respect: everyone wants to be loved and accepted by others. What I particularly liked was the way the author very subtly points to true human values, without offending bad habits. Wonderful words encourage children to see the beauty in differences, as well as the fact that this world belongs to all of us. As you read it with your children, you can connect the pictures with real situations, with children and people close to you, stimulate a discussion about friendship. Believe me, this book contains many elements that will allow you to spend a few hours of quality time with your little ones.
I do not have enough words to express how delighted I am with this book. Rhymed verses, portrayed through beautiful illustrations that speak loudly about a world in which all children are loved and accepted, about the beauty in the differences, about the truth in the similarities ... A children’s book that should be part of every family library.
What a great little concept book about inclusion from a Christian perspective! I like seeing faith-based publishers realize the importance of putting out titles that speak to larger societal issues and problems. The illustrations are charming and the text simple, making a great choice as a baby or toddler book.
Xochitl Dixon writes a story that displays the beauty and importance of God’s plan of human diversity. Many kids will see themselves in this book!
The illustrations are beautiful and the story is inspiring. I appreciated that Dixon pointed out the differences between the children and included a child in a wheelchair as well.
Different Like Me by Xochitl Dixon had a beautiful message in its simplest form that everyone is different, The detailed illustrations are engaging and represent the true diversity of skin color, gender, and various differences in outward appearances. As the mother of a child with Cerebral Palsy who uses a walker for mobility I also was pleased to read that differences physically were also examined. The author showed children who are also visually or physically challenged with the appropriate mobility aids of a cane or a wheelchair. Often, my son is left out and this is an excellent social story that can be shared with young children to show that “while we are different....we feel things the same.” Various emotions are detailed and advice is quietly shared on how to truly be a kind individual. The special diversity of all children was celebrated and done in an way that will promote inclusive relationships naturally. I was provided a free copy of this book to review from Net Galley. The opinions shared are my own.
Gorgeous book! The message paired with the illustrations is very strong and it didn’t feel forced at all. As a BIPOC I felt seen and represented and I was so happy to see kids with disabilities were represented as well!
This book is precious and is a must have for every home and library.
Completely in LOVE with this book! My son is very hard to get to sit still and listen to stories, he is very active and has a short attention span. As soon as I started reading this out loud he came up and sat beside me and listened to the story! It really brought tears to my eyes at how beautiful the story was. The illustrations were wonderful and wonderfully done. I would rate this as 100% great reading for any child even if a parent wanted to leave out the God parts and just pass on the lesson that everyone is different and yet the same.
What an adorable story! It is beautifully illustrated, highlighting how children are the same and different. Great for the Pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms, it shows how everyone is special and unique by using rhyming verses. Definitely a helpful tool to start a conversation of diversity and race with young children.
My only dislike is the focus on Christianity and the Bible scriptures. It's there, but it's not preachy like other books. I would not be able to share at storytime at my public library but will definitely add to my collection!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read the e-book in exchange for an honest review.
This is such a wonderful way to teach about diversity. The picture are so wonderful.
I would recommend this to anyone with a Christian faith or if you don't mind seeing scripture in a book. It would be a great resource for Sunday School, VBS, Christian camp, or a Christian school.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has Christian values.
*Recieved from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a children's book about diversity and being different. It covers how people all look different, have different passions and deal with different disabilities that people have. I like how it covers children of different nationalities and handicaps, but in the end they all have the same feelings and enjoy doing the same things.
I would recommend this book to children and families to read together. This is a book that is has a great story and really cute. It will reach children because of the illistrations and story line. Some reviews mentioned that the drawings were scary, I did not see this at all. They also said that children who looked alike were grouped on the pages and not mixed, this is not true.... the children are not grouped they are mixed and I thought this book would be an excellent edition to any childs book library, espically in today's world and how media covers this subject everyday. Great Book!!!
Different like me
Such a joyous, uplifting book celebrating differences and highlighting compassion for the fact we all experience similar feelings.
The illustrations are so lively, bright and beautiful. They really suit the celebratory feel to this book. There are a range of physical differences depicted through the pictures and all are seen playing together.
The first part of the book sees text highlighting ways people may be different to each other, and beautiful illustrations showing some of these differences.
The second half of the book details ways people are similar with some extremely touching moments between people show in the illustrations.
There are references to God at the beginning and end but in a touching and gentle way.
I love this book for its diversity and for saying, ‘Hey we aren’t all the same and we do notice differences about each other, but let’s embrace and celebrate them’. A wonderful diverse and inclusive book that will brighten any day.
A very sweet and positive book that celebrates how all of us are different and similar and special.. It was great to see this message told through a Christian lens and the message that we are all human and all gods children and special just the way we are is a message that we all need to hear.
This book has some religious parts to it, which may prevent it from being used in its entirety in a classroom. I liked how it touches on diversity, differences, disabilities, feelings, and how people are the same even with all those differences.
This book is beautiful illustrated and through its lyrical verses we learn about diversity. I really loved this book! Between the vivid and captivating illustrations and the rhythmic style of verse I could not stop reading this book
Note: This is book is a Christian picture book and does mention God.
Thank you to Netgalley and Our Daily Bread Publishing for the e-ARC!
A sweet book for little children celebrating our differences. So cute! The illustrations are wonderful as well.
Very cute book! My toddlers ( 2 and 3) enjoyed the pictures and the message. I loved the inclusive message as well.
Super cute!
I love the simplicity of this book and most of all its anti-bias theme. This book would be great inside of a early childhood education class but may run into some issues with having God at the end; as a ECE teacher i would personally skip over that or fill it in with a different word to make it completely inclusive
Different Like Me is a wonderfully illustrated children’s book celebrating the differences in people. I will use this book in my classroom. In our discussions about individual differences and diversity. Thanks Our Daily Bread Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC of this title.
Looking for a fun book to talk about how we are all different and unique and made in the image of God? This is it! While there are many books focused on race, this book goes further to discuss how we're all different in so many ways and it's a good thing. The beautiful, colorful, unique pictures are just a bonus.
Great children's book! I love the comprehension questions in the back of the book. The message of this book is so important while we all look different and like different things, we are all the same. I would recommend this book to any parent and child who believe in Christianity, as it does reference the bible and God.
This beautifully illustrated picture book is endearing. Diverse characters find that while they are different (unique!) from each other, they are also alike. Lovely to read with positive and spiritual (Christian) messages.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the opportunity to review an advance reading copy of #DifferentLikeMe
Dixon creates a charming poem that runs through the book, communicating the idea that all children are created by God no matter what they look like, and all are capable of doing beautiful things as part of their God-developed design as human beings. The illustrations also pair well with the story, creating a positive and enjoyable tone to the story.
My daughter and I read this together. She liked the colorful and pretty pictures. The art is top notch. She liked that the story had a poem and rhythm. It is a great way to introduce children to accepting all and seeing similarities instead of differences —all in the context of God’s love. I like that there’s a good list of questions for discussion with your child at the end. This is a carefully crafted book that is well made.
Different Like Me
by Xochitl Dixon
Back of the Book: “Different Like Me is Xochitl Dixon's first children's book. It's based on a story she wrote years ago to explain to her own children the beauty of God's diverse world.
God made each of us unique, but sometimes these differences can leave us feeling like a fish out of water. In Different Like Me, follow a diverse group of children as they work together to help a giant fish balloon toward a surprising conclusion that will delight children. Celebrate our differences and uncover what we have in common on this whimsical journey that reminds readers that no matter how different, all of us are a part of God’s wonderful creation.”
Impressions: This was a really cute book to open the discussion with kids about the differences we all have but also the similarities! I enjoyed the pictures and story as did my boys. I always appreciate when books have questions as this one did at the end to help keep the conversation going.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review shared here.
Different Like Me is a great book to showcase how God made us all different and unique, but we can still have things in common. I love that the book starts and ends with a Bible verse showing how God created us all in his image and that He was thinking of us before we were even born. This book includes kids of so many different races and abilities with great wording and adorable pictures! This is definitely one that I would love to add to my kids book collection!
I loved the message of this book, it’s about embracing differences. I could not recommend it for use in a public school
Setting since it mentions God and has biblical quotes at the beginning and end, but for private use in a Christian home it would be lovely.
Review of eBook
Looking around, a young child observes that there are many other children, all different from me. Different shades, hair, eyes, smiles. Different languages. Different families, friends, homes, names. Different pets, food, games. They like different things and do different things.
We may be different, but we feel things the same. Happy, hurried, scared, sad, grumpy, worried, free, glad.
Perhaps, in our uniqueness, we are more alike than we are different.
This picture book illustrates diversity both in its words and in its pictures as it helps the young reader understand that differences don’t affect the many ways that people are alike. Colorful, eye-catching illustrations accompany the rhyming text.
This book is a perfect springboard for a parent/young child discussion about “different” and “alike” and how every person is unique and special.
Relevant scripture quotes appear prior to the beginning of the story and following the end of the story.
Highly recommended.

Different Like Me by Xochitl dixon is a book that celebrates the differences in people. The book teaches about diversity well, but I would not include this in a classroom library due to the bible verses, unless the text was paired with other religions/verses. The illustrations were beautiful!
Thank you to NetGalley and Our Daily Bread Publishing for the ARC.
LOVED. This was SO cute with the most beautiful illustrations. I loved the lyrical rhyming and the sweet message in this book--that we are all different, and yet, we have so much in common. This book is lovely and sweet and I will absolutely be getting a copy for our library.
A wonderful story with a powerful message! I really thought this was a great book and my kids enjoyed it as well. This is a book was a wonderful reminder of how beautiful our differences are and that although we are different, we are all beautifully and wonderfully made. This book explores the many possible differences we can have and that we are all different together. I was unaware about the religious perspective when I initially choose the book, but it makes no difference, the message was still wonderful. The illustrations were so well done and the rhyming words really helped the story along. This was easy to read, easy to follow along and my children and I really liked this book for our story time. Would definitely recommend this book for all children.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
I received an ARC from Our Daily Bread Publishing, via NetGalley. This review is my personal opinion
In this book, Xotchil Dixon, take an important and relevant topic in our society. Inclusion although highly mentioned and discussed still has a long way in my heart this is an important and personal subject as a Special Needs Teacher and aunt of two children with Special Needs. What I like about this book is that goes to the center of all, from the start God created us we are all special, beautiful, and unique. Diversity is all around us, and I believe all children with this book could start to learn what the Bible says about our difference and how they can act before them. I also like the illustrations, I can see myself reading this book to my niece and nephew and sharing with them how beautiful is to be different. Well done to Xotchil Dixon, to Bonnie Liu for her illustrations.
What I think you should know about this book:
Different Like Me Written by Xochitl Dixon and Illustrated by Bonnie Lui is a Children’s Picture book. It has bright and bold illustrations that are attractive and fun for teachers.
What I think about this book:
This is such a delightful book ! Even before the current social climate I tried to find books that showed diversity. This book has diversity in spades. It features boys and girls, it has multiple skin tones, body types and excitedly for me children who have disabilities! It features a child with a wheelchair, another with a cane and dark glasses and a service dog. Most importantly it shows the children active and engaged in activities. I love that even with their different abilities each child is having fun and shown with friends. The only thing that I would change about the book would have been to have a child with a hearing aid, I just know from personal experience that it is hard to find a child with a hearing aid in books unless it is a book specifically about hearing loss. ( If I got a print copy I would happily draw one on a character for my son!) I also like the repetitive question in the book as it would make for a fun read aloud with a student. I highly recommend this book to any parent, preschool or Sunday School teacher!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Through the use of illustrations and rhymes, Different Like Me points out not only the ways in which we are unique, but also the many things we have in common. A quick read, this is a story that is sure to be a favourite on a family or classroom bookshelf. I particularly like the inclusivity inherent in the illustrations. The story begins and ends with Bible verses, as well as some follow up questions that would lend themselves well to a Sunday School lesson. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

A celebration of diversity. Nice bright and colourful. A good stimulus for discussion with young children.
I love this storybook and how it celebrates our differences and how to remind our children that we are all different. And, that's a good thing.;)
This was a cute little book about how everyone is different, but we all have similarities that we can bond over.
So I really appreciate what the author set out to do with this book., and I think it's so important to have a wider range of diverse children's books.
That said, my personal issue with this book is God and religion. While this is, of course, perfectly fine for children who are religious, and whose religion also includes just the one God, I wouldn't use it in the classroom. I teach children of different kinds of faiths, and ones without, so I personally find it really important to consider this when choosing a book.
if used for private use only, it's a lovely book.
2.5 stars.
Let me just start with this: I loved DIFFERENT LIKE ME so much!
This is a simple book. It points out all the differences in the little kids - skin color, hair color, bodies, languages, favorites. All the things that the world insists need to keep us apart. But then, it turns around and points out that underneath the surface, the kids are all the same, yet not.
God made each of us unique. Unique and made in His image. This book shows that being different isn't meant to tear us apart. We can love our neighbors and embrace their differences, a viewpoint the world is sorely lacking right now.
This is a fairly easy book for young readers. My 6-year-old struggled with some of the larger words, but most of it he was able to read on his own. It's definitely one that we'll be buying a hard copy of, as they will enjoy reading it for years to come.
I borrowed this book from the library and my kids and I read it more than a few times. Each time, we came back and talked about how wonderful it was to be different from others, yet all connected. This is such an inspiring book. (and the art was gorgeous, too!)
