Amazing mystery thriller ! This story is very engaging. Two best friends on a weekend away trying to have fun and leave reality behind. The night gets crazy and I’m the morning with a crude hangover Orla realizes her friend is gone. As the reader you are seeing and thinking the same as Orla. Is she just out for lunch? Is it she’s actually missing ? If so who and why ? So many twists and turns along with a plethora of shady characters. Orla realizes right away you absolutely can not trust anyone. This book hits home in a lot of ways. It makes you wonder and think what in the world would I do if I was in another country and a dear one disappears.
Thank you for allowing me to read this gem.
The Weekend Away by Sarah Alderson caught me from the first chapter and wouldn’t let go. Two friends are off for a weekend trip. . One a new mother looking for a quiet restful weekend, the other a single gal looking to party down. And off they go! There are so many twists and turns, double crosses, and triple crosses. You will not believe the ending! I had to go back and read it twice. This was a book I just couldn’t put down. This is my first book by Sarah Alderson., but definitely not my last. I will be ordering this gem for my library and also recommending It for my book clubs. And Shhh, don’t give away the ending! Thank You to NetGalley, Harper 360 and The Author Sarah Alderson. for allowing me the opportunity to read this advanced digital copy for an honest review.
"The Weekend Away" by Sarah Alderson is a tale of a girls' trip gone awry. Best friends Orla and Kate decide to take a much needed getaway after both experiencing major life events (new baby & messy divorce). What starts out as a fun night out grabbing drinks and meeting handsome men ends the next morning with Orla nursing a massive hangover and Kate missing.
The book is told from Orla's perspective. While the story is engaging enough, I found Orla to be annoying. She was so dramatic, and this is coming from someone who is a bit dramatic herself. The reader goes along the journey with Orla as she navigates piecing together fragments and memories from the night before Kate goes missing.
While the book started off slow going for me, it picked up the pace in the second half. If anyone is considering not finishing early on, I would encourage you to read on.
I received "The Weekend Away" by Sarah Alderson from NetGalley and Harper 360 in exchange for an honest review.
This was such an interesting read. The characters were well-developed and there were many suspicious characters -- it truly kept me guessing until the end as to who knew what / what the events of that night truly were. In the beginning, Orla is a bit annoying -- the story is told from her perspective, so we have a lot of insight into her overactive imagination.... or could it be possible? As the story unfolds and Orla starts uncovering pieces of the night, she becomes much more dynamic and interesting.
There are so many mysterious aspects of this book -- Orla learns much more about Kate and the people in their lives than she had bargained for. The second half of the book was really a page-turner, as Orla began making headway into uncovering what happened that night. Even int he final chapters, I was guessing / second guessing who I suspected had a hand in the occurrences that night and could not put the book down before finding out! This did have an open-ending, but also did give some closure -- it's certainly one I'll be thinking about for awhile!
I really liked this book and didn’t see the end coming, it was definitely a shocker. It had a really different plot line, I know it sound like the usual stuff but trust me...it is a little different. I was hooked from the first page. The only complaint that I have is that this book was so intriguing that I missed out on sleep a couple nights.
I love a good psychological thriller but can usually figure out the the big reveal...Not this time. I won’t say all the twists were a surprise, I figured out some things earlier on but the actual ending was not what I expected. You do have to suspend belief a little bit and I usually hate that but it worked here. (Hence the four stars instead of five.) I would definitely recommend this book and I will gladly watch out for more books written by Sarah Alderson. That's the best compliment I can give an author.
This fast-paced page-turner starts out innocently enough when long time besties, Orla and Kate, embark on a carefree weekend holiday to Lisbon. Circumstances for the women change quickly shortly after arriving in Lisbon, when Kate goes missing and Orla is left to unravel the mystery of her best friend's disappearance. Suddenly finding herself an amateur sleuth, Orla desperately tries to piece together clues while in a foreign city, unable to speak the language and with a police presence that doesn't seem interested in pursuing the case. This tightly written thriller is loaded with shady characters and mysterious clues that kept me guessing up until the very end. Read it in record time because I couldn't put it down. Solid five stars!

This book was a bit predictable and formulaic but it’s very engaging and the characters are like able and fun enough that it keeps you sucked in and turning pages through the plot. Solid 3.
I finished this book in 1 day! What do you do when on a weekend away a d after a night of heavy drinking when you discover your best friend is missing? This is Orla's dilema while on a girls weekend in Lisbon wirh her best friend Kate. A thriller to the end you won't be able to put down! An excellent read
Thank you to Netgalley for a copy for an honest review! This book knocked it out of the park for me! If you are looking for a stay up all night, can't wait to see what happens, and what just happened! This book is for you. Orla a new Mom really just wants to sleep so a weekend away with her best friend Kate is just what she wants or is it? After a first night of using her ex's credit card before he cut her off, Kate wants to party, Orla really doesn't after a booze filled bring two guys home with them kind of night, Kate disappears and Orla has not recollection of what happened. Now the rest of the book, Orla is retracing her steps and put the pieces together of what happened to Kate? The ending, oh the ending. Is WOW. Great book.
Enjoyed the book. Kept changing my mind on "who did it" and was not disappointed I got it totally wrong!
WOW! What a great book. Twists and turns, deception, lies, suspicious characters... it has it all. The adventure begins in the first chapter and does not let up. Great story and the author does an amazing job of developing the characters without dragging it out. I can see this being turned into a screenplay. One of the best books I've read this year.
Wow! I really enjoyed this one. It started of as a innocent get away from your life with your friend - screw the tries to get pregnant or marriage issues- we are going to have fun weekend. Only it was not meant to be so innocent when Orla wakes up and Kate is gone. Orla tries to retrace her steps and tries to piece back together what happened- and why. It all leads one way and then the next and you get lost in the brilliant turns along the way. In the end it was a shocker how this story was tied up and explained!
A really great twisty thriller. I definitely recommend. It was fast-paced and kept me guessing. No spoilers here! The characters were well done and interesting. I really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this book. Character development was good. The plot was very interesting. Not a lot of typos.
I’m so glad I didn’t give up on this book! The first half of the book was a bit boring - Orla and Kate goes on holiday and on the second day, Kate goes missing so you have Orla walking around looking for Kate. That’s pretty much the gist of the first half. I was so bored I was about to DNF it. But things picked up in the second half and that ending, WOW! A twisty thriller if you can make it through the first half.
This had all the premise of being a good lightweight thriller. Two friends that go away on holiday and one of them disappears. I felt throughout the first part of the book that Orla was being overly dramatic about her friend that was at best flaky. Then as the story progressed and more twists were introduced, things became implausible. All the events were too complicated that upon reflection there were many plot holes. When I came to the end of the book I was mad at the way the author manipulated us with one more bloated twist. I won't go into specifics about why there were plot holes as that would spoil the story for others but logistically and timewise, some things were inconceivable. That kept resonating with me and tainted my enjoyment
I was hooked from the first pages.Well written characters lots of twists & turns kept me guessing till the end .I will be recommending to thriller lovers.#netgalley #harper360
I really enjoyed The Weekend Away! Nothing like a girls trip to reconnect two friends who have grown apart due to their lives changing over the years. Lisbon provided a beautiful setting for this novel that kept me on the edge of my seat until the end! So many interesting and unique characters. Once you think you had it all figured out, another twist was thrown at you! Kept me reading until late in the night.
Longtime friends Orla and Kate have a tradition of going away one weekend a year. Although they haven't had the annual trip in a few years, Orla has a new baby, and Kate is recently divorced. They decide they need a get away, a reinstate the tradition and go to Lisbon for the weekend. When Kate wakes up to find Orla has vanished she searches for her friend and uncovers lots of twists, turns and secrets along the way.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I loved reading about Lisbon, and I loved the premise of the book.
The protagonist, Orla, made some silly decisions which did not seem to fit with her character, and other characters conveniently had completely hidden sides to them. There may have been more twists and turns than were completely necessary.
If you like suspense, escapism, twists and turns, you will enjoy this book!
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Kate and Orla (best friends for 20 years) plan a weekend away in Lisbon. Kate plans a special night out at a fancy restaurant and then to a bar for drinks. There they meet 2 men and Katie invites them back to the apartment they were renting for the weekend. From the beginning the story pulls you in and keeps you guessing until the end.
ARC review - The Weekend Away by @sarahalderson
4 stars! I sat down yesterday at 4:00 PM and finished it tonight it was that good! I haven’t read a fast-paced, action-packed thriller in quite some time and this book really filled that void.
The story follows Orla, a 40-year-old woman on a weekend trip to Lisbon with her best friend Kate. After a crazy night out with her friend, Orla wakes up to find Kate missing in her Air BNB. I couldn’t stop reading to find out what happened to Kate. Basically, TRUST NO ONE!
This is my first book by Sarah Alderson, and I am super excited that NetGalley gave me the opportunity to read this version! The paperback won’t be available until April of 2021 but you can read on Kindle (for $3.99) today.
