Publisher: HCI Books
Genre: Cooking, Food & Wine | Health, Mind & Body | Self-Help
Release Date: November 17, 2020

Nourish by Reshma Shah, MD, MPH, & Brenda Davis, RD is a guide for plant-based nutrition and includes tips & recipes. This definitely a great resource to have on hand if considering adding in more, or switching exclusively to, plant-based nutrition.

Part one is titled "Consideration" and covers chapters on health, home and heart.
Part two is titles "Care" and covers chapters such as managing macronutrients and fiber, micronutrients, and what makes a healthy diet.
Part three is titled "Confidence" and includes chapters on principles of feeding, family meal, and raising a veg leaning family.
Part four is called "Connection" and includes chapters on shopping, planning, and prepping, as well as sample menus and recipes.

There is so much information included in this book. It is obvious that this was well researched and is easy to read. I look forward to adding some plant-based options into our menu. I'm looking forward to making the pumpkin muffins for Thanksgiving!

I'm so grateful to Reshma Shah, MD, MPH, & Brenda Davis, RD, HCI Books, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.

This book has a lot of research that goes with it and it showed in the presentation of facts for the readers. As a Nutritionist-Dietitian student, I commend the authors for translating nutrition jargon into layman terms and explaining complex concepts in a more digestible and concise way so that everyone can easily understand. As a research-oriented person, I loved all the citations and tables presented in this book. This is a good start for people who want to start a plant-based diet and/or want to know more about this kind of diet. I still highly recommend and suggest to consult a Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian before doing any kind of diet to ensure that the health of the person will not be compromised, as well as the adequacy of the nutrients their body should be receiving.

This is such a handy book for anyone interested in plant based nutrition. It is filled with useful information, tips and advice. As a vegetarian who is looking to make the move to a plant based diet, I can thoroughly recommend this and will be using it again and again

This is a long and highly comprehensive discussion of the plant based diet,. I got bogged down in the descriptions of scientific studies and could not finish it.

Nourish is a glimpse of food which briefs about various foods, nutrients, diets. The author has explained each and every aspect of nutritional values and also touch bases on the diet for every age right from the infants. If you are looking about something which gives you a full knowledge on food then this could be a great help. In the end you can also find some recipes and how to plan your meals.

Nourish is a very informative book for families who are considering taking the step to becoming vegan. My 5 year old has started questioning meat eating and my 2 year old has never been a fan, meal times are struggles to get her to eat any meat product… so I believe I was the perfect target for this. All the problems we wonder about are tackled in there with complete tables giving a lot of nutritional information in a palatable form.
I was less of a fan of the stories in front of each informative section, like how this and this family discovered benefits they didn’t know about plant based diet, or how surprised a doctor was to see no calcium problems in someone not consuming dairy… it felt manipulative, but that might be because I worked in marketing and recognised the emotional heart string tools of the trade. I know it is only meant to illustrate the point, but I could have done without.
A few chapters were redundant, for example, I did not see the point to explaining why family meals are important. I think people reading that type of book already believe that it is.
The recipe section of the book is rather small but interesting, and my greatest complaint about it is the lack of pictures. I love cooking, but pictures talk to me a lot more than the list of ingredients. I was particularly sad about it as a few times the author points out it is important for dishes to look nice, this helps stop the craving for, well, meat products, but without any example it’s harder to picture and know what to do. I really think this book deserves photos and would be greatly improved by them, without I am less inspired to try it out.

A voluminous book full of information.
I expected this to be less scientific and more bite sized. The information given of course was great but I wasn't able to complete it because it was taking me to long to read.
This book is wonderful for the fact that it is informative and not just another happy book of recipes and facts with little to no research to back it up.
I am not DNF-ing the book I am just going to take my time with it.
The knowledge is timeless.

Wonderful source for plant-based eating. I read it at a time when I was trying to lead a healthier lifestyle, and this book absolutely came in handy. Lots of helpful practical tips and suggestions.

This cover is so beautiful I was expecting a lot of glorious recipes with beautiful photos. To be honest this book is about 75% straight text and learning before you get to any cooking. Different than expected a bit more sciencey than I was hoping for. Would be good for someone wanting to explore and get into plant based, especially with a family.

This book was received as an ARC from HCI Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I have never learned so much in a cookbook before like I had with Nourish. I was familiar on the importance of fruits and veggies healthwise and was familiar with the impact they had on the environment but learning that it goes way beyond protecting your body and the environment really peaked my interest. I also took a look at the recipes in the book too and I can't wait to try all of them but especially the peanut dragon bowl, the apple crisp and the nice cream really caught my eye and I know after I eat them, I will feel fantastic. This also will do very well in our TX collection at our library as well and a potential candidate for our cooking demo.

We will consider adding this title to our TX collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

To say that Nourish is an extensive guide to plant based diets is an understatement. The book covers, in detail, the health reasons for adopting a plant based diet, how our diets affect the climate and our lives, how to maintain balanced health while eating a plant based diet. Nourish answers every single question you would have before transitioning to a plant based diet, and even several questions you didn’t think to ask. There was literally 300+ pages of information before you got to any recipes.

The book was full of tables and graphs to illustrate and help the reader better understand the points that were being made. However, one of the most helpful things included in the book was the shopping list that was included. A lot of times when people begin a new diet, they have no idea where to begin, so including an extensive shopping list was extremely smart and helpful. They also included sample menus, which would be perfect for a person’s first week or two on a plant-based diet.

The recipes that were included were unique and easy to follow. They included alternatives for taco night and burger night and used a good variety of easy to find ingredients.

If you’re thinking about adopting a plant-based diet, I think that Nourish is the only book you’ll need to read!

This book had tons of great information on how to feel your family in a way that is healthy, as well as how to increase the amount of vegetables your family consumes. At the end of the book, there are also a lot of delicious recipes.

Gives great details on what you body need, why and how to obtain it through a primarily plant based diet. It's a great resource for vegans, vegetarians and people who want to incorporate more whole foods into their diet. I apricated how the book talked about the health and environmental benefits of reducing your consumption of meats and highly processed foods. Not extreme or preachy.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

This is a fantastic guide for anyone contemplating a plant based diet and does not know where to start. Or vegans and vegetarians looking for more nutritional advice and wanting more information to validate their decision to those who may question it. This is also perfect for vegans wanting to include small children.

Topics covered are nutrition, environmental impact and compassion for animals. There is a small amount of recipes included. As an established vegan I found the recipes too simple but they are perfect to get a novice off and running with lots of toddler recipes to excite the little ones.

This in-depth nutritional guide was was written by a doctor and a nurse who are both vegan, and the focus is very much on encouraging people to turn to a vegan diet with tools and information to do it in a healthy way. It covers many reasons to switch to a whole foods, plant-based diet from health reasons to ethical ones and more. It then goes into details about every aspect of nutrition from each vitamin to types of fats and much more. Q&A's after each section cover common questions and case histories are scattered throughout. The very end has basic vegan recipes but there are no photos or nutritional information and this is a short, basic section (overnight oats, teething biscuits, no cheese sauce, tofu fingers, etc.).

There is quite a lot of information on how to do a healthy, whole foods, plant-based diet for children and during pregnancy. Sections also include topics like cooking for family members who don't want to go vegan, teens' eating, the importance of a family table and so on.

If you want to go vegan or be convinced, this will be a great tool. I have been vegan at times in my life and turned around some chronic health conditions many years ago by switching to a vegan diet for a time period. I also wholeheartedly support the vegan lifestyle because of issues about animal cruelty and the effect of conventionally raised livestock on the environment. I cook for a large family that includes vegetarian and omnivore members and I tend towards whole foods, plant based recipes myself. There definitely are many benefits to eating at least mostly whole foods, plant-based diets, at least part time. That said, the information at times felt a little skewed to sell veganism. For instance, I recently found out that I'm consuming far less protein than I need now that I'm past 40. Trusted medical authorities (including some vegan authorities) are warning us that we need far more protein at midlife and after. This book lists women and men as just all lumped together at 18+ for protein needs, other than during pregnancy and lactation, saying that any woman over 18 needs 46 grams of protein. It's actually much higher after middle age, and it can be tricky for vegetarians and especially vegans to meet the additional needs at midlife. Just tell the truth here and give tools, don't minimize what we really need. It was the same with the information about some concerns like EPA and B12. I know they want to sell their side, but it's their responsibility to do it with all the information. For the most part, they do this well but there were a few instances like this that felt a little sketchy.

This is a textbook of a book, not a pleasure read. There aren't photos and there aren't mouthwatering recipes. There is a great bit of very good information for vegans or vegan curious folks though, especially parents.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

This book does a very good job of describing why a Plant Based diet is good for you and why processed food is not. It also helps describe why it may or may not be good for children. Don't necessarily go into this expecting all recipes. There is a very thorough explanation, theory, tips, and preparation for the plant based lifestyle. The recipes don't start until about 75% into the book. The recipes are simple, and easy to follow. I can't wait to incorporate this into my routine!

The cover is GORGEOUS. Who wouldn’t want to start a plant-based “diet” from just looking at the cover?

The book is very informative and evidence-based. Unfortunately, we know that evidence alone is not enough for people to completely upend their lives. Reading the book, I felt sort of like a smoker reading about how smoking is bad for you. We know. And we also know that a plant-based family is more healthy.

The section on advice for parents when talking about weight and nutrition with kids was fantastic. The charts throughout the book were helpful.

I haven’t tried any of the recipes yet, but very few of them seemed appetizing. What this book needs is a way to entice readers to follow the nutritional guidelines suggested in the book. Make the recipes and include full-color photos.

The book suggested many times that families could transition into being more plant-based, but didn’t really give a framework for transitioning. And the transitioning part is probably the thing my family and I need the most.

Perhaps the recipes could include transitional suggestions. I’m not ready to go straight to tofu and chickpeas just yet. No matter how good the science is.

If you have a family that you’re trying to provide healthy meals for and family members are calling you crazy, this book will give you a lot of ammunition to fight back against the naysayers. But if you’re not used to eating a plant-based diet yet, this book might not move you over the line.

Nutrition experts continue to emphasize the importance of a plant-centered diet. Plant-based diets focus on consuming plant foods and minimizing the use of animal foods. As the number of people switching to plant-centered meals increases, this book serves as a guide to achieving this goal without becoming nutrient-deficient. The authors present the information in clear and plain language and also provide readers with hints for achieving nutrition goals at all age levels. They also provide recommendations for menu planning, shopping, and preparing meals that are plant-centered. In addition, they have included both ideas for “no recipe“ meals as well as several recipes for those who prefer to use them.

This book would work for personal use or as a gift. Either way, the person using this book is on their way to a healthy way of eating.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book provided by the publisher and Net Galley. However, the thoughts expressed are totally my own.
