Some nice recipes but some tricky ones with hard to find ingredients which spoiled it a little. A mixed bag for me.
I ended up buying a copy for my personal collection. The Caldo des Pollo recipe is simple and tasty, I’m glad to have a good collection of Mexican recipes that give me the confidence to try them at home.
Thank You NetGalley for the eARC. This book came out during the pandemic and i was able to sit home and try a few. My waistband thanks you as do I.
From the gorgeous cover to the love that you can tell went into the contents, this is a great cookbook to have to make home cook meals for any Mexican food lover... which is me! I could make so many things out of this every day and never get tired of it!
I appreciate the publisher allowing me to read this book. I have made several recipes from this cookbook they are great.
Former school teacher turned food blogger Mely Martinez released her new cookbook full of traditional Mexican dishes. This cookbook is beautifully illustrated with easy to follow recipes and notes with tips on making each dish extra special. This covers a wide range of options from fresh salsas, main dishes, desserts and even beverages. I loved the photography of this book each dish looks delectable. I am from Arizona and love Mexican fare and flavors, so I am always looking to expand my repertoire and was excited for this book. However, I was disappointed that all of the recipes, while traditional, were extremely basic and things I have seen many times before.
Really like this book! Lots of wonderful ideas and I can’t wait to work through them! Recommend for anyone who loves trying new recipes
I really enjoyed the recipes in this book. Some ingredients were hard to find during lockdown but I tried a few and they were delicious.
I did not read The Mexican Home Kitchen through the lens of an educator.
However, The Mexican Home Kitchen by Mely Martinez was absolutely fantastic! I loved the authenticity of the cookbook along with Martinez's stories. The recipes were easy to follow, the photographs were beautiful, and the overall cookbook was one that I would absolutely purchase for my home and gift to others.
I love Mexican food although rarely cook it myself. This book helped me to better understand the style of cuisine and the ingredients that make it so special. Mely Martinez makes it easy to recreate these delicious favourites at home with great results!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me access an advance digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
It is a book that I enjoyed from start to finish. Living abroad has caused a certain nostalgia in me. Thanks to this book, I will be able to recreate the delicious foods of Mexico. The recipes are authentic, and I am sure it will be one of my favorite cookbooks. I loved the recipes for enchiladas, tacos, mole, soups, and many others. It was a delighting experience to read this book. It is for sure one of my favorites. I thank NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Rock Point for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review
This is so lovely, it feels like a friend telling you about her family recipes.
Everything looks very tasty. I like Mexican food but don't often cook it u less it's from a recipe kit. This book explains everything clearly though so it feels very easy to achieve.
Mexican food always mesmerize me, because the food I grow up with are also contains multitude of spices and they are so good. So, curious as I am, this book is my very first authentic Mexican food, of course, chosen also for the story behind each food.
Thought I can finish reading it in one go, but no! Finished it in the next day because the book has so many recipes to offer (not only tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, tortilla and empanada) , and bookmarked some to try.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
The Mexican Home Kitchen is a fantastic cookbook for any lovers of Mexican food. Full of authentic, traditional foods, this book is sure to get taste buds tingling and mouths watering.
There are many comfort food recipes within this book that I can't wait to try!
The author explains information about spices at the beginning and the book has a photo to accompany most of the recipes throughout this book.
If your looking for authentic and traditional food and cooking, then this book is a must read!
Mexican food is my absolute favourite so I was very excited to be approved for this book. All of the recipes sound so delicious and not overly complex to make which is a winner for me! Excellent collection of recipes with really great images of the food. It's really helpful that the book has both the UK and US measurements. Really authentic and vibrant, I will definitely be asking for the physical copy for Christmas as it's a cookbook I will use again and again. Would also make an excellent gift for any cooking or Mexican food lovers!
I love cookbooks and this one did not disappoint! Being from Texas, I eat a lot of Mexican food and found these recipes fun and delicious!
Finally a cookbook that features my favorite Mexican dishes with recipes that I can follow that fill me with nostalgia and eagerness to get in the kitchen. The photos that accompany the recipes are gorgeous and serve as confidence boosters to get you to say, 'Yeah, I can whip that up. I can handle that.' I need this book in my cookbook library!
This is a gorgeous cookbook written by a Mexican American chef, especially for fellow Mexicans away from home who miss the foods they grew up with. Martinez goes into lots of details about ingredients and provides recipes for all the standard Mexican dishes, with a special focus on dishes that are comfort foods back home. There are photos for over half of the recipes, but not all. No nutritional information is provided. Most of the recipes rely heavily on meat and cheese, so it won't be a great fit for vegetarians (and definitely not for vegans). There's a pretty high use of ingredients like bread crumbs, spaghetti, corn, rice, etc. that will also make it challenging for paleo, whole-30 or other folks on special diets (forget it if you're keto or low-carb). For those who just want delicious, modern traditional Mexican recipes, this will be a phenomenal tool.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
This is an excellent book to get you started on cooking Mexican food at home for your family.
With an extensive introduction to Mexican Home Cooking, this book is divided into four main chapters .
- Soups
- Main Dishes
- Salsas & Salads
- Desserts & Drinks
The Introduction provides details of the authors background, then moves onto essentials for the food pantry, including vegetables, peppers, herbs & spices, dry ingredients, dairy, tinned foods and fats. Next is a list of equipment and tools that would be required and how to roast some of the vegetables. also in this section are two recipes for tortillas - flour and corn.
The recipes are provided in both imperial and metric measurements but not gas marks for the oven and provides preparation times, cooking times and number of portions. There is an introduction to each recipe and some have handy notes too on leftover or how to ensure the meat does not dry out. The step by step instructions are easy to follow. Most of the recipes have a colour photograph to accompany the dish.
There are the Mexican staples, such as refried beans, guacamole, tacos' but there are plenty of other dishes to choose from too such as Meatball soup, pork stew with squash, Shrimp in a chipotle sauce. Also included is the best way to cook rice, Lots of the desserts look delicious and a must if you have a sweet tooth and enjoy condensed and evaporated milk! The drinks included are non-alcoholic.
I received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.
I really enjoyed this cookbook. I was able to review it for free through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, and I wish I could keep it.
There's a brief description of cooking techniques, ingredients, and equipment in the beginning, which is useful for the home cook. It's just enough information to be helpful, but not so much that it's tedious to get through.
The recipes are the star. I wish I'd had time to try them all. I tried 3. Refried beans (which I made with bacon grease instead of lard) were rather good. Camerones con chipotle (chipotle shrimp) was fast and very easy to make - perfect for a weeknight dinner.
I was thrilled to see a recipe for mole poblano. Mole is a Mexican sauce that's made with small quantities of a lot of different ingredients. It's not found in all Mexican restaurants, and so I get it whenever I see it. So of course I needed to make it. It's made with a variety of dried chiles, seeds, nuts, Mexican chocolate, raisins, and plantains, all fried briefly, then blended with broth. It is time-consuming, but well worth it. And Martinez's recipe is fantastic. I substituted cocoa and cinnamon for Mexican hot chocolate, but even so it turned out perfect. The instructions gave enough detail on how long to cook each item, and caution signs for each. (Although, I do wonder if the broth was the water used to cook the chicken, or something additional.) The sauce was easy (though time-consuming) to make. It was delicious, and made tons.
I've bookmarked several recipes and wish I had time to try them all. They're all very accessible to making at home, with minimal extra ingredients.
