For Mely Martínez, Mexican cooking has always been about family, community, and tradition. Born and raised in Tampico, Mely started helping in the kitchen at a very young age, since she was the oldest daughter of eight children, and spent summers at her grandmother’s farm in the state of Veracruz, where part of the daily activities included helping grind the corn to make masa.

Mely started her popular blog, Mexico in My Kitchen, to share the recipes and memories of her home so that her son can someday recreate and share these dishes with his own family. In the meantime, it has become the go-to source for those looking for authentic home-style Mexican cooking.

I really loved this cookbook full of authentic Mexican recipes. Tex-Mex abounds where I live, but there’s nothing better than authentic Mexican food, and I love how the author assures you that every kitchen is different, and every recipe will be different depending on the cook, and the day. I also love how she puts stories behind each recipe. Presented very well, with beautiful photos and notas of each recipe. Also great explanation of tools and ingredients. I’ve already started trying many of the recipes and I can’t wait to try each one. Many recipes and some complex, but she makes it easier even if you are a beginner cook. Highly recommended cookbook to have in your kitchen.

Yummy yummy that’s all I can say for this book. I love Mexican food but rarely attempt anything other than some burritos so this book has so many delicious suggestions I can’t wait to get started and the corn soup and the Christmas punch are top of my list

That glorious cover drew me in and the delicious recipes and photos made me long for my fave Mexican dishes. Written by the famed blogger Mely Martínez of Mexico in My Kitchen, this stunning cookbook features recipes for traditional home-style dishes from across Mexico, including salsas, mole, enchiladas, carnitas, empanadas, desserts, drinks, and more.

Also includes instructions for pantry stocking, making flour and corn tortillas, easy-to-follow recipes, and compelling stories from Mexico. A triumph!

**I received and voluntarily read an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**

Yes! Yes! YES!!!!!! A fantastic cookbook that I've needed for years.

The recipes are delicious (I've already made two of the salsas and I'm in the middle of prep work for at least two more recipes. 5/5 stars- not only for the great recipes, but also in honor of my favorite restaurant that permanently closed due to the pandemic. These recipes look identical and I can't wait to try them!

Fabulous pictures and great sounding recipes. I can't wait to make them up. There is a shrimp dish that will be my first recipe to try.
This was an ARC copy from netgalley.

This cookbook is filled with a variety of delicious looking Mexican recipes.

The ones I’ve saved to try first are:
Camerones en chipotle (shrimp in chipotle)
Salsa Roja
Salsa verde Cremosa (creamy avocado tomatillo salsa)
Chocolate caliente (Mexican hot chocolate)

I loved that the recipes in this cookbook not only look delicious, they also sound reasonably easy to make and most of the ingredients should be very easy to find.
I live in the middle of nowhere and the only ingredients I personally might have difficulty finding are the peppers.

This cookbook is also filled with high quality pictures of the food and that’s important to me.

I was especially excited to find the salsa recipe. I’ve said on many an occasion how the salsa at Mexican restaurants is so much better than store bought salsa that I hardly ever buy salsa at the store.
When I saw this picture, it looked like the kind of salsa I like. And it looks super easy to make.

5/5 Stars

The Mexican Home Kitchen is the comprehensive cookbook you need for traditional Mexican foods. Not only does Martinez provide amazing recipes, but there is a thorough review of the pantry ingredients needed with explanations for those who may not know what piloncillo or chayotes are. She also provides a list of tools and alternatives for those who don't want to go out and buy a lot of new items.

The Mexican Home kitchen starts with the basics like roasting vegetables or making corn or flour tortillas, before providing delicious recipes for soups, mains, salsas, desserts, and drinks. One thing important to note is that every recipe provides the servings yield, which can sometimes be 8-12 so the reader may want to adjust to fit the size of their family. The photos are gorgeous and really helpful for people like me who need to know what our end product is going to look like when we're attempting a new recipe. I am so excited to finally try a traditional recipe for Mole Poblano and Chiles Rellenos as well as all of the other delicious recipes in this book.

I was excited to get a first look at The Mexican Home Kitchen by Mely Martinez. If you are in the market for a cookbook with authentic Mexican cuisine, then this is definitely the one for you.
The book is beautifully photographed and the recipes are easy to follow for the most part. Some do seem somewhat time consuming. When you don’t live in or near a larger city many ingredients in this book are difficult to find, and unfortunately this was the case for me. I will definitely try to find some of the ingredients online to order, but I probably won’t reach for this cookbook as much as I would have liked.
I’d definitely recommend this one if you are looking authentic Mexican that you can make at home.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book.

They say we eat with our eye's and boy do you do that with this book. I must have put on lbs. Mely Martinez has put together an incredible collection of Mexican food.
Easily laid out with the ingredients and instructions alongside a wonderful colour picture. Lots of fresh produce is in use and I for one was astounded at the range on offer. Usually our local Mexican restaurants have all the same offerings and a lot of it not that healthy. This is what makes this book stand out. The colours of the food. And if you love avocado then you'll love this too. Plus healthy recipes.
This is certainly a book to add to your cookbook staples.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review

Brilliant and vibrant cookbook. The cover and chapter pages of this book are beautiful and refreshing. The food images are impeccable and everything looks delicious.
The recipes are relatively straightforward, easy to follow instructions and ingredients that can be found anywhere although with some you need to do a little digging to find!
My favourite thing about the way the recipes are written is it has both US and UK measures. Being from the UK I hate when recipes use cups or sticks for measuring as I always have to convert on my mobile then get my phone covered in ingredients! But this has both that and gram measures, which is brilliant.
I love the simplicity of these recipes and is not pompous or overly ambitious for home cooking. So authentic and vibrant - really will be a book I use regularly. I already have some recipes selected to try and can't wait to purchase a physical copy when it is published officially.

Awesome to read an authentic Mexican cookbook. I love Mexican food, but I mostly see Tex-mex food around me, instead of the authentic ones. I’ve made my own salsa, Mexican rice, and guacamole for years, and they are simply delicious. After reading this book I’m planning on expand my repertoire with lots of delicious dishes.

I am a vegan, but this book has mostly meat and chicken dishes. It does not bother me, since I’m a wizard at veganizing food. I can do it very easily with most of the dishes in the book. My biggest challenge will be to find just the right ingredients for certain recipes, but I will most definitely try!

I’m excited about the way the author writes about certain recipes coming from different parts of Mexico. Such a huge country will naturally have many different traditions. I also find the small tales interesting, like Mondays being laundry day, and that’s why women cooked one special dish on Mondays, and it’s still a popular dish to be served in restaurants on Mondays.

I know many of these recipes will become a part of my cooking routine. I was also happy to see I’ve been making authentic pico de gallo and guacamole for years! Provecho!

I found this to be a wonderful introduction to Mexican home cooking with many recipes I'd like to try out. The book includes recipes for many common favorites and also for some much lesser known ones. Recipes come from various parts of Mexico and are not specific to any particular region. The text is accompanied by many photographs of the dishes and each recipe includes notes on cooking along with alternative options where applicable under the Notas section. The book is welcoming and helpful all along the way.

It's a 4.5 star cookery book in my eyes and I look forward to seeing a print copy and trying out these recipes

Many thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing for sharing an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

I made my own tocos and tortillas. They turned out ok. Easy to follow and the photos were a big help with understanding the dish.

The Mexican Home Kitchen is written by Mely Martinez, a flood blogger who now lives in the USA. This book is beautifully presented and provides authentic yet easy to follow Mexican recipes. There is a comprehensive introduction that also includes a description of the many ingredients used in the recipes, along with some suggestions of alternatives if you cannot source them.
As well as some of the standard Mexican food, the book also offers many recipes that are less known. It is very meat orientated, so vegetarians like myself will have to adapt them for their own use. A beautiful book with vibrant photographs.

I read this ARC for an honest review
All thoughts and opinions are mine

I frequently go to mexican restaurants - or did before Covid - but have never attempted it myself - reading this has encouraged me to take the plunge

This is a beautifully looking book. the photographs are jut lush

I love the beginning which sets out all the practicalities of what you need - ingredients etc

The author clearly has a huge love for Mexico and his traditions and cultures - love that

Split into chapters, the recipes are easy to follow and irresistible.

Firstly, just visually this is a really beautiful cookbook. It's vibrant and colourful, but still clearly laid out and easy to read. The author writes so fondly and informatively about Mexican cooking and food. The first few chapters cover the core ingredients, tools and techniques of Mexican cooking. As well as the authors background and love of Mexico and Mexican cooking providing a visceral link to home for the diaspora population.

Every recipe is accompanied by a short paragraph about the dish, and then footnoted with substitutions you can make either for your taste, regional variations or if some ingredients aren't available to you.

There are chapters on every aspect of Mexican cooking, including an entire chapter dedicated to the amazing array of drinks in Mexico. It really is encyclopaedic in its depth and breadth. If you enjoy cooking, Mexican cuisine or just beautiful books I really recommend this.

I love Mexican food, but I've only tried mainstream dishes, such as Tacos, Burritos, Chilli etc. Since Lockdown I have tried to be more adventurous with my cooking and discover new recipes. I was attracted to this book by the beautiful cover, as well as the title. Recipes that are cooked in Mexican Homes sounded interesting.
This book has gorgeous photographs in it which show the finished dish, as well as some step by step photographs. There is an extensive list of tools and equipment that are usually used in Mexican kitchens as well as a guide to pantry ingredients.
The Author starts the book with the story of how she has always been interested in food, and learnt to cook at her Grandmother's Farm. Each recipe begins with an introduction of the History of the dish, and ends with extensive notes to help you make the dish.
The ingredients are in both American Cup Sizes as well as grams which makes it a lot easier. There is a good variety of recipes, some of which I am familiar with, others are new to me.
I would recommend this book for someone who already has knowledge of cooking, not a novice as some of the recipes are more complicated.
The only drawback to this book is that in the U.K. I don't think that you would be able to buy some of the ingredients very easily, especially cheeses and the vast range of peppers. They could probably be substituted though, although the resulting dish may not be as authentic or delicious.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC.

Anyone looking for authentic Mexican cuisine will enjoy this book full of recipes and colorful photos. Not only are Mexican entrees recipes included, but there are also recipe for tortillas, soups, rice, dips, desserts, and traditional Mexican beverages. Bold cuts of meat are the star of many of these dishes as well as fresh vegetables and herbs. There are plenty of mainstream favorites included here as well as dishes you're unlikely to find in your average American Mexican restaurant. If you are a fan of Mexican food and know your way around the kitchen then you will find plenty to enjoy in this book.

Mr. Dita is almost perfect but he doesn't like Mexican food. I am married to a guy who actually orders a cheeseburger at Mexican restaurants.

He doesn't even dig into the appetite destroying chips, leaving no one else at the table to blame when the basket is empty, the selfish jerk.

So when he devoured the Tamales de Pollo En Salsa Verde I made for the kids last night you KNOW it was good!

This cookbook is short but jam packed with great recipes and photos. It is 5 stars all day!

If one enjoys Mexican food, The Mexican Home Kitchen is a good cookbook. It has several sections, which makes it easy to find whatever recipe one is looking for, and the recipes themselves are easy to understand. I also really enjoyed all the photos in this book. There's tons of recipes I'd love to try, as I really enjoy eating Mexican food.

I really enjoyed this cookbook. There are wonderful stories, beautiful food pictures and so much more! I loved the pantry staples section telling me key items I would need while making these wonderful recipes. I went out and bought the ingredients for the Chicken Tortilla soup immediately and I can't wait to make it. I loved that the recipes had Mely's own notes as well, including Instant Pot or Crockpot cooking times. It's so convenient to have everything you need in one beautiful cookbook!

Beautifully photographed, authentic recipes for any cook!

This cookbook definitely made me hungry. The recipes are easy to understand with few hard-to-find ingredients. The chapters cover soups, tamales, drinks, desserts, and many main dishes. The author has used authentic ingredients but has made it easy to understand.

Many dishes are not complicated and only use a few ingredients, but the technique is important, which is why the photos and instructions are, thankfully, clear and easy to understand.

This would make a great gift as well, as it is so beautiful and the colors are vibrant.

I received a digital ARC as a reviewer for NetGalley.

This Mexican cookbook is an absolute delight! It is well laid out, and very informative from an introduction about Mexican home cooking and Mely’s life as a child growing up in Mexico to a comprehensive list of Mexican ingredients and utensils.

The recipes are set out very clearly with enticingly delicious looking photographs.
Mely’s “Notas” are very useful for alternative ingredients and cooking processes.

My only criticism ( and it’s not really a criticism, more an observation) is that it is very hard to get some of the ingredients in the UK (eg nopales and tomatillos) at a reasonable price, but they could be substituted for something else, ( maybe okra/ green tomatoes.)

All in all an inspirational cook book for anyone wishing to try cooking Mexican home style food , and a pleasure to read.

The Mexican Home Kitchen is a wonderful cookbook that "captures and memories of Mexico" with its comforting traditional recipes. Mely Martínez has put a lot of thought and care into this book, giving tips and explaining the staple ingredients in Mexican cuisine.
I love that the book teaches you to make your favorite Mexican dishes at home, but also that there are many recipes that may feature new unique foods and combinations for home cooks.
Many thanks to Rock Point Publishers and NetGalley for the advance copy.

How frustrating that this ARC doesn't seem to be made available for reading via Kindle my strong choice equipment.. I'm new to this so any advice welcome as a pdf is zero use to me. Thanks for allowing me nominal access to what seems an interesting read, but any assistance to help my actual access very welcome.

Having a Mexican best friend and Mexican nieces, I thought I was more familiar with Mexican food, however this book showed me that I have more than a few holes in my knowledge of Mexican food. I was so excited to see recipes that are both familiar/unfamiliar, and some that hit me with nostalgia -- Crema de Elote, Flautas, Chiles Rellenos, MOLE POBLANO - YES!). I'm so excited to try them, especially ones that I've had on my list to make, however was never really happy with previous recipes. For the most part, I can find the ingredients in local stores (I live in a very diverse city), the instructions are numbered, the photos are beautiful and the Notas are incredible helpful. Thank you Mely Martinez! #TheMexicanHomeKitchen #NetGalley

I love Mexican cuisine but I haven't previously tried to cook it as I didn't think I could do it justice. However, this book sets out all its recipes so well and explains them so clearly that I'm giving it a shot! All the recipes sound incredible and I cannot wait to give them a go.

Yay! I was so excited to read this book! I love some homemade food and I love trying new recipes at home. I tried Mexican food for the first time 3 year ago and I just can't live without flour tortillas and chips&salsa! I'm Brazilian and we don't really eat Mexican food there even though they are similar. This book has most of the recipes that we crave when going to a Mexican restaurant and more! The photos are very nice, the recipes are easy to follow and well organized. It didn't have a recipe for ACP (arroz con pollo) but it's ok! Great book!! I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This is, quite simply, the perfect cookbook. The layout is simple and intuitive and the photography is stunning. There are dishes that I know I do not like, yet the photos make me want to try them again. I can’t wait to try the salsas. Highly recommended!

This is a lovely cookbook that is full of delicious sounding recipes. The author begins this title with sections on The Mexican Pantry, Tools and Equipment, Roasting Vegetables and both Corn and Flour Tortillas. Then come the many recipes in categories including soups, mains, salsas and sides, and desserts and drinks.

It’s hard to pick just one from each category as there are so many but here is a sampling. There are Pozole Rojo, Picadillo, Salsa Verde Rostizada, Arroz con Leche and Cafe de Olla.

Those who already love or who would like to explore Mexican flavors at home, will enjoy this cookbook. The photographs are gorgeous and the recipes are clear.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

I am obsessed with Mexican food and learning to make it authentically. So when I was able to get my hands on this cookbook I couldn’t wait to dive right in!

The cookbook is beautifully organized, well written and gorgeously photographed. Ingredients were accessible and there were a good variety of recipes to choose from. My husband and I really enjoyed the Tacos de Bistec and loved the Ropa Vieja. I have so many recipes marked for future meals. I am especially looking forward to our next meal of Albondigas en Chipotle.

I would highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who is looking learn authentic Mexican recipes, rather than Tex-mex.

I want to thank NetGalley, the author and publisher for the e-ARC of this cookbook. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.

Finally, what has been missing from my "Mexican" cooking has been realised!!! If I've learnt anything from this, it's that European oregano is no replacement for MEXICAN oregano. Who knew?

Well, this lady. I found these recipes slightly complicated for an Australian shopping list, but we're not completely devoid of culture and ingredients (like Mexican oregano) are available at speciality shops.

I also learnt a lot about tacos. You're all going to laugh, but I had no idea really at all. I thought hard tacos shells were authentic. Luckily, I can make my own tortillas and am even going to try to fry them up and make my strips.

I now follow the author on IG and her blog and look forward to recreating some of the vego meals in here. Totally worth it if you want to cook authentic Mexican food. I'm looking forward to growing some Mexican oregano and Mexican chile (see, i can spell it right now).

Cooking is central to the Hispanic culture and is what brings individuals of a family together. The Mexican Home Kitchen is a gorgeous representation of the traditional foods in Latin America. Martinez simple and straight forward recopies are easy to follow, while the pictures add a richness to each recipe. Each recipe has clear notation on prep time, cook time, and how much it will yield. Giving the reader/cook a realistic expectation of how long it will take to make. The short and sweet origin blurb gives just enough background to acknowledge the culture and not take away from the cookbook dynamic. The Notas are a delightful surprise that will help the cook in their journey through the recipes. Often the recipe will not add extra knowledge that can make or break the dish. By adding these tidbits, the reader/cook can make a special dish the way they were intended. This is a cookbook every kitchen should have.

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC. First impression of this cookbook is that it's just so pretty. Half of me wants to dive in and cook everything, and the other half doesn't want to risk spilling anything on it. There is also just such a warmth to the text, which is very welcoming. Something that's appreciated by someone with minimal experience cooking Mexican food (and who isn't Mexican.) The pantry and tools lists at the beginning also suck you right in and get you wanting to go shopping immediately for what you don't have on hand so you can get started cooking up a storm.

Recipes were clear, had measurements in both metric and imperial, and included little details that I always find handy, especially the first time I make a recipe, like specific signs of "doneness". The gorgeous photos of the food were the icing on the cake, and had me wanting to make everything immediately. As fall and winter approach, I can't wait to warm myself up with some rich stews and smokey peppers.

This is a lovely book. with lots of authentic recipes that I hadn't come across before. It makes it easy to break out of cooking the more well-known Mexican dishes and to try something different.

I enjoyed flicking through the pages of this book, because if you have ever been to Latin America, this will bring back a lot of memories.
Mely Martínez put this book together with family recipes and that’s exactly how it feels. They are not fancy restaurant dishes but rather the traditional staples you see for almuerzo on the corner.
While every country has its own recipes and variations, this is a great book to learn recreate the staples you may have tasted. Just like in Latin America, vegetarians will need to adapt a bit, but luckily there are plenty of flour and lentil and bean-based recipes as well.
So, if you can find all the recipes (in smaller places this may be challenge), this is how to learn how to make true Latin American food.

I have been looking for a Mexican cook book for awhile now so I was happy to be able to read and review this one for NetGalley. This book is full of helpful info and lots of authentic recipes. Easy to read and follow. I am planning to buy the print version as well for my cookbook collection. I haven't had time recently for a lot of home cooking but we tried the Chile Rellenos recipe and they were delicious. Am happy to recommend this cookbook for Mexican food lovers!

The Mexican Home Kitchen by Mely Martinez is a new favourite in our household.

The introduction of Martinez spoke right to me. I always wondered why food tasted differently depending on who was cooking it. So glad I was not alone in that. I appreciated the very well organized and concise list of ingredients at the beginning. There were a lot of familiar recipes with a few new ones thrown in. The layout and design were perfect for this book. The photos made me salivate the whole way through.

I highly recommend this to anyone who loves Mexican cuisine! I will be purchasing a copy for myself and as gifts.

Mely Martinez's new cookbook has long been awaited, especially for those who have closely followed her blog for years. This book encompasses the heart of Mexican cooking beyond what people typically see. These recipes conjure beautiful memories of my mother, tias, and abuelita in the kitchen, stirring rich caldos, atoles, menudo and pozoles, and of course, chopping meats and vegetables for asados like asado de puerco, discada nortena, and carne con papas. Mely's recipes take you on a deep dive into the Mexican food made in our homes and does a fantastic job portraying what is served on our family tables. I wholeheartedly recommend this book and her blog (link in my bio).
