This book is filled with recipes I imagine being passed down from abuelas all over México.
Everything I tried was delicious (the churros were extra delightful!) and easy to follow.
Nearly every recipe has a picture, and it's filled with tips on storage and longevity.
There were a few of my personal favourites missing (Dónde está la receta de galletas de boda?) but I suppose it would be hard to include everyone's favourite recipes from México without making this the biggest cookbook to ever exist.
Much love to NetGalley & Quarto Publishing Group – Rock Point for my DRC.

A wonderful and easy to follow recipes. If you want to make salsa, tortillas or soups and main dishes this is a great resource. Common ingredients and step by step instructions makes this a must for those who want more authentic Mexican dishes. Highly recommend this book.

Based on her years writing her blog, Mexico in My Kitchen, Mely Martinez has brought us The Mexican Home Kitchen. It’s a beautiful book with a nice variety of recipes. I received this as an arc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I grew up in Central Texas with Tex-Mex as my home food. Tex-Mex is an anglicized variant of northern Mexican home cooking. It doesn’t take much effort to find more traditional Mexican fare in and around Austin, but it was our travels in through Mexico that opened my eyes to the differences. I bring this up because many Americans think Tex Mex is Mexican cuisine. It is not. A lot of these recipes are very familiar to me and I would recommend this to someone interested in exploring Mexican food beyond the anglicized border variations. Cheddar cheese and sour cream don’t make the list of ingredients in most of these recipes.

The vast majority of these recipes really are doable in your average home kitchen. Some of them take time and attention (no InstantPot recipes here), but she does utilize the blender in ways that cut prep time down significantly. I laughed (at myself) when I saw her carnitas recipe. It calls for 5 ingredients – pork, lard or vegetable oil, garlic (optional), salt and water. My recipe has an additional 7 ingredients. I will be calling my recipe shredded pork from now on. All of the recipes, even the tamales, feel doable.

The Mexican Home Kitchen is a cozy cookbook. It’s great for omnivores, has some vegetarian recipes and not much for the vegans in your life.

I haven’t cooked that much Mexican food other than the well known dishes we all love, so I was very eager to read this and oh my God, I am so flippin’ happy I did, there is so much inspiration and happiness to be found in this beautiful coook book. Mely draws on family and home cooking and you can tell, you can feel the love food food, home and the recipes in this book. Just reading and going through the book makes you hungry and drool. The few recipes I’ve tried so far have been a great success, easy to follow the recipes and hugely popular with my family. I would highly recommend this is added to anyone’s kitchen library, a wonderful addition to mine that will definitely become a go to recipe book.

Beautiful authentic style Mexican foods cookbook! Recipes vary from main dishes to sides, desserts, and drinks. Mouth watering pictures were delightful and the recipes themselves very detailed. Even a step by step method for corn and flour tortillas that looked amazing.

What did I like? I loved the authentic feel of the cookbook. I have never been to Mexico but have had a few friends from there cook for me so it was a relief to find a lot of similar type pictures. The food they cooked always tasted amazing despite some of the cuts of meats they used and simplicity of the dishes. The fresh ingredients looks like it makes all the difference.

Would I recommend or buy? If your nostalgic like me and love these authentic type recipe books then look no further for some mouth watering Mexican food. I can’t wait to try to make my own salsa, or guacamole recipe listed. The pictures in this book were amazing. The book also offers some really great looking soups as well. I would love a copy of this book.

I received a digitized copy to voluntarily look at and offer an opinion. This was a beautiful cookbook. Kudos to the author for some great recipes. Five stars.

They look so yummy and I love the design of the book. Just visually this is a really beautiful cookbook. It's vibrant and colourful.
A lot of the recipe look easy to make and most of the ingredients should be very easy to find.

This book was received as an ARC from Quarto Publishing Group – Rock Point in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I could not stop reading this cookbook and look at all the photos of the delicious food. This cookbook will definitely make you crave Mexican even if you are not the biggest lover of their food. I am not a huge Mexican lover but after reading this cookbook, I know that there will be some dishes that will convert me and I know one of the recipes I will be trying is the Mexican Meatballs. All look so delicious and this will definitely be a potential candidate for our cooking demos at the library.

We will consider adding this title to our TX Non-Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

If one enjoys Mexican food, The Mexican Home Kitchen is a good cookbook. It has several sections, which makes it easy to find whatever recipe one is looking for, and the recipes themselves are easy to understand. I also really enjoyed all the photos in this book. There's tons of recipes I'd love to try, as I really enjoy eating Mexican food.

I really enjoyed this cookbook. There are wonderful stories, beautiful food pictures and so much more! I loved the pantry staples section telling me key items I would need while making these wonderful recipes. I went out and bought the ingredients for the Chicken Tortilla soup immediately and I can't wait to make it. I loved that the recipes had Mely's own notes as well, including Instant Pot or Crockpot cooking times. It's so convenient to have everything you need in one beautiful cookbook!

Thanks to the author, Quarto Publishing Group-Rock Point, and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are mine.

Beautifully photographed, authentic recipes for any cook!

This cookbook definitely made me hungry. The recipes are easy to understand with few hard-to-find ingredients. The chapters cover soups, tamales, drinks, desserts, and many main dishes. The author has used authentic ingredients but has made it easy to understand.

Many dishes are not complicated and only use a few ingredients, but the technique is important, which is why the photos and instructions are, thankfully, clear and easy to understand.

This would make a great gift as well, as it is so beautiful and the colors are vibrant.

I received a digital ARC as a reviewer for NetGalley.

This Mexican cookbook is an absolute delight! It is well laid out, and very informative from an introduction about Mexican home cooking and Mely’s life as a child growing up in Mexico to a comprehensive list of Mexican ingredients and utensils.

The recipes are set out very clearly with enticingly delicious looking photographs.
Mely’s “Notas” are very useful for alternative ingredients and cooking processes.

My only criticism ( and it’s not really a criticism, more an observation) is that it is very hard to get some of the ingredients in the UK (eg nopales and tomatillos) at a reasonable price, but they could be substituted for something else, ( maybe okra/ green tomatoes.)

All in all an inspirational cook book for anyone wishing to try cooking Mexican home style food , and a pleasure to read.

The Mexican Home Kitchen is a wonderful cookbook that "captures and memories of Mexico" with its comforting traditional recipes. Mely Martínez has put a lot of thought and care into this book, giving tips and explaining the staple ingredients in Mexican cuisine.
I love that the book teaches you to make your favorite Mexican dishes at home, but also that there are many recipes that may feature new unique foods and combinations for home cooks.
Many thanks to Rock Point Publishers and NetGalley for the advance copy.

How frustrating that this ARC doesn't seem to be made available for reading via Kindle my strong choice equipment.. I'm new to this so any advice welcome as a pdf is zero use to me. Thanks for allowing me nominal access to what seems an interesting read, but any assistance to help my actual access very welcome.

I found this to be a wonderful introduction to Mexican home cooking with many recipes I'd like to try out. The book includes recipes for many common favorites and also for some much lesser known ones. Recipes come from various parts of Mexico and are not specific to any particular region. The text is accompanied by many photographs of the dishes and each recipe includes notes on cooking along with alternative options where applicable under the Notas section. The book is welcoming and helpful all along the way.

It's a 4.5 star cookery book in my eyes and I look forward to seeing a print copy and trying out these recipes

Many thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing for sharing an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

I made my own tocos and tortillas. They turned out ok. Easy to follow and the photos were a big help with understanding the dish.

The Mexican Home Kitchen is written by Mely Martinez, a flood blogger who now lives in the USA. This book is beautifully presented and provides authentic yet easy to follow Mexican recipes. There is a comprehensive introduction that also includes a description of the many ingredients used in the recipes, along with some suggestions of alternatives if you cannot source them.
As well as some of the standard Mexican food, the book also offers many recipes that are less known. It is very meat orientated, so vegetarians like myself will have to adapt them for their own use. A beautiful book with vibrant photographs.

Firstly, just visually this is a really beautiful cookbook. It's vibrant and colourful, but still clearly laid out and easy to read. The author writes so fondly and informatively about Mexican cooking and food. The first few chapters cover the core ingredients, tools and techniques of Mexican cooking. As well as the authors background and love of Mexico and Mexican cooking providing a visceral link to home for the diaspora population.

Every recipe is accompanied by a short paragraph about the dish, and then footnoted with substitutions you can make either for your taste, regional variations or if some ingredients aren't available to you.

There are chapters on every aspect of Mexican cooking, including an entire chapter dedicated to the amazing array of drinks in Mexico. It really is encyclopaedic in its depth and breadth. If you enjoy cooking, Mexican cuisine or just beautiful books I really recommend this.
