I love Mexican food, but I've only tried mainstream dishes, such as Tacos, Burritos, Chilli etc. Since Lockdown I have tried to be more adventurous with my cooking and discover new recipes. I was attracted to this book by the beautiful cover, as well as the title. Recipes that are cooked in Mexican Homes sounded interesting.
This book has gorgeous photographs in it which show the finished dish, as well as some step by step photographs. There is an extensive list of tools and equipment that are usually used in Mexican kitchens as well as a guide to pantry ingredients.
The Author starts the book with the story of how she has always been interested in food, and learnt to cook at her Grandmother's Farm. Each recipe begins with an introduction of the History of the dish, and ends with extensive notes to help you make the dish.
The ingredients are in both American Cup Sizes as well as grams which makes it a lot easier. There is a good variety of recipes, some of which I am familiar with, others are new to me.
I would recommend this book for someone who already has knowledge of cooking, not a novice as some of the recipes are more complicated.
The only drawback to this book is that in the U.K. I don't think that you would be able to buy some of the ingredients very easily, especially cheeses and the vast range of peppers. They could probably be substituted though, although the resulting dish may not be as authentic or delicious.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC.

Anyone looking for authentic Mexican cuisine will enjoy this book full of recipes and colorful photos. Not only are Mexican entrees recipes included, but there are also recipe for tortillas, soups, rice, dips, desserts, and traditional Mexican beverages. Bold cuts of meat are the star of many of these dishes as well as fresh vegetables and herbs. There are plenty of mainstream favorites included here as well as dishes you're unlikely to find in your average American Mexican restaurant. If you are a fan of Mexican food and know your way around the kitchen then you will find plenty to enjoy in this book.

I'm giving this one 3.5 stars because it has potential, but it's not for me.
The recipes in this gorgeously covered book are for some of the most traditional and common foods one finds all over Mexico. They're basically the 'fonda' version of what you'd find in most Mexican houses.
Now, I feel like I need to explain what a 'fonda' is because if I tell any Mexican that it's fonda food, they'd immediately understand what I mean. But there really isn't a direct translation into English so bear with me. Imagine fast food if it was made from better ingredients and the taste changed from place to place depending on who is doing the cooking. The food always has a similarity in what's on offer and how it's served, but the taste changes. It's in essence basic, classic dishes made with a few, affordable ingredients.
I made a couple of the recipes and they're well explained and pretty easy to manage. The flavor was good, but it's the kind of food that I would usually go to a good 'fonda' restaurant for and find it even better.
That's why I say that it's fundamentally good, but not for me. If I'm cooking, I'm making more complex dishes, or just using the recipes that I inherited from my mom and older relatives and that are (IMHO) better ^_^.
My one dig at it is that it uses cumin. I have family from all over Mexico. I've eaten all over Mexico. Never have any of the traditional dishes I've tasted used cumin. The most common complaint I hear from people when talking about Mexican food in the US is that there is cumin in it, and that's just not done in traditional Mexican cooking. I'm actually incredibly intrigued by Matinez' use of it.

Happy thanks to NetGalley and Rock Point for the early read.

Mr. Dita is almost perfect but he doesn't like Mexican food. I am married to a guy who actually orders a cheeseburger at Mexican restaurants.

He doesn't even dig into the appetite destroying chips, leaving no one else at the table to blame when the basket is empty, the selfish jerk.

So when he devoured the Tamales de Pollo En Salsa Verde I made for the kids last night you KNOW it was good!

This cookbook is short but jam packed with great recipes and photos. It is 5 stars all day!

Thank you to Quarto Publishing - Rock Point for gifting me a copy through NetGalley. It was my pleasure to write an honest review.

This cookbook is filled with a variety of delicious looking Mexican recipes.

The ones I’ve saved to try first are:
Camerones en chipotle (shrimp in chipotle)
Salsa Roja
Salsa verde Cremosa (creamy avocado tomatillo salsa)
Chocolate caliente (Mexican hot chocolate)

I loved that the recipes in this cookbook not only look delicious, they also sound reasonably easy to make and most of the ingredients should be very easy to find.
I live in the middle of nowhere and the only ingredients I personally might have difficulty finding are the peppers.

This cookbook is also filled with high quality pictures of the food and that’s important to me.

I was especially excited to find the salsa recipe. I’ve said on many an occasion how the salsa at Mexican restaurants is so much better than store bought salsa that I hardly ever buy salsa at the store.
When I saw this picture, it looked like the kind of salsa I like. And it looks super easy to make.

Thank you to Netgalley, Quarto Publishing Group – Rock Point, and Mely Martinez for providing me with an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

5/5 Stars

The Mexican Home Kitchen is the comprehensive cookbook you need for traditional Mexican foods. Not only does Martinez provide amazing recipes, but there is a thorough review of the pantry ingredients needed with explanations for those who may not know what piloncillo or chayotes are. She also provides a list of tools and alternatives for those who don't want to go out and buy a lot of new items.

The Mexican Home kitchen starts with the basics like roasting vegetables or making corn or flour tortillas, before providing delicious recipes for soups, mains, salsas, desserts, and drinks. One thing important to note is that every recipe provides the servings yield, which can sometimes be 8-12 so the reader may want to adjust to fit the size of their family. The photos are gorgeous and really helpful for people like me who need to know what our end product is going to look like when we're attempting a new recipe. I am so excited to finally try a traditional recipe for Mole Poblano and Chiles Rellenos as well as all of the other delicious recipes in this book.

I was excited to get a first look at The Mexican Home Kitchen by Mely Martinez. If you are in the market for a cookbook with authentic Mexican cuisine, then this is definitely the one for you.
The book is beautifully photographed and the recipes are easy to follow for the most part. Some do seem somewhat time consuming. When you don’t live in or near a larger city many ingredients in this book are difficult to find, and unfortunately this was the case for me. I will definitely try to find some of the ingredients online to order, but I probably won’t reach for this cookbook as much as I would have liked.
I’d definitely recommend this one if you are looking authentic Mexican that you can make at home.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book.

They say we eat with our eye's and boy do you do that with this book. I must have put on lbs. Mely Martinez has put together an incredible collection of Mexican food.
Easily laid out with the ingredients and instructions alongside a wonderful colour picture. Lots of fresh produce is in use and I for one was astounded at the range on offer. Usually our local Mexican restaurants have all the same offerings and a lot of it not that healthy. This is what makes this book stand out. The colours of the food. And if you love avocado then you'll love this too. Plus healthy recipes.
This is certainly a book to add to your cookbook staples.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review

Brilliant and vibrant cookbook. The cover and chapter pages of this book are beautiful and refreshing. The food images are impeccable and everything looks delicious.
The recipes are relatively straightforward, easy to follow instructions and ingredients that can be found anywhere although with some you need to do a little digging to find!
My favourite thing about the way the recipes are written is it has both US and UK measures. Being from the UK I hate when recipes use cups or sticks for measuring as I always have to convert on my mobile then get my phone covered in ingredients! But this has both that and gram measures, which is brilliant.
I love the simplicity of these recipes and is not pompous or overly ambitious for home cooking. So authentic and vibrant - really will be a book I use regularly. I already have some recipes selected to try and can't wait to purchase a physical copy when it is published officially.

Awesome to read an authentic Mexican cookbook. I love Mexican food, but I mostly see Tex-mex food around me, instead of the authentic ones. I’ve made my own salsa, Mexican rice, and guacamole for years, and they are simply delicious. After reading this book I’m planning on expand my repertoire with lots of delicious dishes.

I am a vegan, but this book has mostly meat and chicken dishes. It does not bother me, since I’m a wizard at veganizing food. I can do it very easily with most of the dishes in the book. My biggest challenge will be to find just the right ingredients for certain recipes, but I will most definitely try!

I’m excited about the way the author writes about certain recipes coming from different parts of Mexico. Such a huge country will naturally have many different traditions. I also find the small tales interesting, like Mondays being laundry day, and that’s why women cooked one special dish on Mondays, and it’s still a popular dish to be served in restaurants on Mondays.

I know many of these recipes will become a part of my cooking routine. I was also happy to see I’ve been making authentic pico de gallo and guacamole for years! Provecho!

I really loved this cookbook full of authentic Mexican recipes. Tex-Mex abounds where I live, but there’s nothing better than authentic Mexican food, and I love how the author assures you that every kitchen is different, and every recipe will be different depending on the cook, and the day. I also love how she puts stories behind each recipe. Presented very well, with beautiful photos and notas of each recipe. Also great explanation of tools and ingredients. I’ve already started trying many of the recipes and I can’t wait to try each one. Many recipes and some complex, but she makes it easier even if you are a beginner cook. Highly recommended cookbook to have in your kitchen.

Written by the famed blogger Mely Martínez of Mexico in My Kitchen, this stunning cookbook features recipes for traditional home-style dishes from across Mexico, including salsas, mole, enchiladas, carnitas, empanadas, desserts, drinks, and more.

Yes! Yes! YES!!!!!! A fantastic cookbook that I've needed for years.

The recipes are delicious (I've already made two of the salsas and I'm in the middle of prep work for at least two more recipes. 5/5 stars- not only for the great recipes, but also in honor of my favorite restaurant that permanently closed due to the pandemic. These recipes look identical and I can't wait to try them!
