This book is just like others by Cars Hunter. It's unique style has you hooked on from the beginning. The podcast and interview transcripts as well as news reports add to the tension. You are willing everything to turn out ok in the end but doubts creep in, wondering if you really know Adam Fawly after all. An excellent read that I couldn't put down. Full of suspense, twists and turns. Very readable.
This is the second Adam Fawley novel I have read and I felt the characters had a developed in really interesting ways. Seeing Adam in a position of weakness was a really interesting insight into his personality.
This was a great story which many twists and turns along the way, meaning that I was gripped right to the final page.
Another glimpse into the life of DI Adam Fawley and his team. Between the worry over his pregnant wife, the appearance of a very public sexual predator in one of the colleges and the young man bringing the charges DI Fawley is ever so very slightly off his game. Which is why when overwhelming evidence is produced he is knocked sideways.
A superb read that kept me guessing right up to the last page!
Cara hunter is absolutely wonderful writer, all her books have been exceptional and The Whole Truth is no different. It was a fantastic, on the edge of your seat read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it
A few years ago I read Close to Home by Cara Hunter and was so surprised at the end that I had to read the final chapter twice, so I was super excited to read The Whole Truth, and to see whether it was as good as I had remembered Close to Home had been.
The Whole Truth cleverly revolves around two mysteries. One involves an investigation of an alleged rape of a male student by a female professor, and the other the death of a woman, who is feared to have been killed by a serial rapist. Both storylines had me captured as they were full of twists and turns and led to unpredictable endings.
Themes touched upon in this book include sexism, power and gender politics. I thought Cara displayed these themes in a very thought-provoking way as she tied in real life examples such as the #MeToo movement.
Whilst this is book No. 5 in the DI Adam Fawley saga, the story stands alone. As I previously stated, I have read one other book in this series but did not find having not read the others to negatively impact the story. However, if you are still not convinced then the author does kindly include a rundown of all the characters at the start of the book. This is great for not only people who haven’t read the other books in the series, but also for those who may need a little refresher.
Overall, a really gripping read. Cara Hunter really does have a talent for ‘WhoDunIt’ storylines!
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is book number 5 in a series - I only realised that after I started reading it unfortunately, although I don’t think it had a major impact on my appreciation of the story.
The novel goes over multiples cases DI Fowley is picking up: a sexual assault from a female teacher on a male rugby player and a strange murder disguised as a suicide...
Although the story was interesting and well written, the magic didn’t really operate on me, probably because this isn’t my favourite genre. I really like psychological thrillers, horrors, but I’m not a fan of detective stories.
It provided me the same experience and thrill I would get from watching a random episode or NCIS, the Experts or something like that: interesting, at times very gripping... and forgettable.
If this is the type of literature that floats your boat, you will absolutely love it, the story is great, loads of plot twists until the last page, and a real brain-twister.
I tend to prefer fiction with a good dose of futuristic/paranormal when it comes to thriller/horror stories. Detective stories are too... normal..!
Thanks once more to Net Galley for the advanced copy of this book.
Cara Hunter never skirts around a topic or concept and instead, throws herself into it. She tackles issues in her book such as sexism, gender, sexual abuse, post traumatic stress disorder and inequality and she tackles them well. Throughout this book she brings in concepts that many Authors would not necessarily know how to write about.
Cara’s books are twisted, fast paced and devestating. The narrative is told in such a way that when a character doesn’t let you in on something you are devestated. This particularly hit home in this book (and I can’t go into more detail because it would be a spoiler) – but I felt betrayed! I even went backwards to see if I’d somehow missed a revealing chapter. That’s how clever Cara is with her words and her characterisation.
Jane Corry (Author) said this, ‘Cara writes with intelligent vivacity. You can almost hear her characters breathing from the page.’ This is so so true and sums up Cara’s writing style perfectly.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I like this series so this new one was a must read for me.
Adam is a great character, and this book made me like him even more. Cliche as it may sound, it’s absolutely full of twists and for a lot of the book I didn’t have a clue what was happening. I had to just keep reading because I needed to know what had happened.
Highly recommend.
Fast-moving police procedural thriller set in Oxford - surprisingly good.
Surprisingly because I have not read any of the previous novels about DI Adam Fairley. The story involves a student accusing a professor of sexual assault but things develop into a lot more than that as a murder also occurs to occupy the detective team. The plot moves along at a fast pace and all the characters are developed and interesting. We learn as much about them as the accused and victims. I found the book to be very interesting and entertaining and I’ll certainly be looking for others by Cara Hunter. I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
If “Making a murderer” had a book sequel, this would be it! Even though the story appears messy and complicated at first with a lot of background to assimilate, the pain is so worth it. Once you get into the swing of the different timelines and narratives, the story unravels gently and grips you until the last page. A good book which should be forgiven its tedious start.
The greatest twisting, turning plot of 2020. Cara hunter never disappoints, love her books. Order this now, you'll be gripped until the end.

The fact that I didn't enjoy this book has nothing to do with Cara Hunter's writing or plotting, which was as excellent as ever, but was purely down to personal preference. Two storylines I avoid reading at all costs are ones about rape, and ones about people being framed, so I really struggled to read this and in fact had to skip over large chunks of it. As a result, I won't be sharing my review on Goodreads or elsewhere as I don't feel my judgement is reflective of the book itself. I really hope that with this story arc out of the way, the next DI Fawley novel is one I can wholeheartedly enjoy, as I have all the previous books.
A great detective story which investgates two unrelated crimes. It took me a while to get into the story , partly because of the use of transcripts from social media (twitter and whatsapp) not all media was easyto read on an e-reader. It was not until later in the book that the strands came together and at that point the book became unputdownable .
The book has moments when you as reader think, no that is a miscarriage of justice, but is totally believable . I would have liked a little more information about certain people near the end, but I liked the thought provoking aspects of the story and no doubt we will find out more in a future episode. This is part of a series, but works well as a stand alone book too. As a reader you get enough background necessary for the story, but not too much that it was contrived or irritating .
Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.I will definately be reading more from this author
How have I never heard of this author and her amazing thrillers???? The Whole Truth is a fast-paced story with not just one but two excellent, absorbing mysteries! The first mystery involves a police investigation of an alleged assault of a student by a professor with a twist - the accuser is a man, the professor a high-powered woman. One of them is lying but who is it? The second involves a serial rapist in a case that hits too close to home for one of the police detectives. The two mysteries are equally interesting with twists and turns that lead to a great ending. I loved it!!
With clever plotting and an engaging style, I flew through the pages of this one. This is one in a series by this author but it can absolutely be read as a stand-alone - which is what I did. Thanks to Penguin General UK and Netgalley for an advance copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. The Whole Truth is out February 25, 2021. Add this one to your list!
Wow- this wasn’t what I was expecting!
I’ve been a Cara Hunter fan from her first book and this one didn’t fail to deliver. I love her writing style, the characterisation and the way the plot never quite goes where you expect. The Whole Truth was no exception - in fact I’d say the story about the professor and student was almost more of a sub plot to the main event!
This was a page turner in the most literal sense - every time I was going to turn in for the night I’d think ‘ok one more chapter’ - and that’s always a good sign.
The character of Marina was complex and unexpected and I still wasn’t sure quite what to make of her at the end. As the blurb promises, it’s not the usual story about a sleazy professor - but it’s certainly all about power, attraction and gender politics.
My only criticism is that I felt Alex essentially discovering the truth re the Parrie case was a little implausible - somehow for 20 odd years the police and legal team hasn’t worked it out, but an emotionally overwrought policeman’s wife, with what could be described as a vested interest, managed to work it out after listening to a podcast ..:
That said, generally the story was gripping and convincing and although the professor and Parrie stories weren’t really interlinked (risking a sense of the book not holding together well) that didn’t take away from the story; in fact flipping between them probably enabled the author to keep the reader’s interest, as it would have been hard to draw out either plot line on its own for the whole book.
Overall another great contribution from Cara Hunter, cementing her place as one of my top go-to thriller writers!
Thanks to netgalley, Cara Hunter and the publisher for the chance to review the book in exchange for an ARC.
When I found out I received an advance copy of this book, it made my week. In true Cara Hunter style, she did not disappoint...the twists and turns and surprises of a solid thriller.
DI Adam Fawley and his team are investigating a sexual assault. An allegation has been made against an Oxford University professor by a student - but things aren’t all that they seem. Fawley and his wife are awaiting the imminent birth of their daughter. Alex Fawley is getting increasingly anxious as her pregnancy progresses and is convinced that a recently released rapist is stalking her. Part way through the investigation a friend of Alex’s is raped and murdered and the prime suspect is DI Fawley himself.
This series never disappoints. A brilliant read from start to finish.
Thanks to Netgalley, Penguin General UK and Cara Hunter for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
I couldn’t wait for the next addition to Cara Hunter’s DI Adam Fawley series, and The Whole Truth didn’t disappoint!
I was completely gripped from the start to the end, and couldn’t put this book down.
It helps having read the previous books in the series, but you’ll can also enjoy this as a standalone read.
Many thanks to netgalley for an arc of this book which I thoroughly enjoyed. No.5 in the DI Fawley series and it didn’t disappoint. Just when you thought you knew what was going on, you are lead down another path so the intrigue continues! Was slightly frustrated by the ending but you can’t always get the ending you want! Highly recommend!
I'm ashamed to say I never read fictions focussed on police investigation as I tend to stick to thrillers. This is the fifth book following the same investigation team but can easily be read as a stand alone - I actually have the other books either on my kindle or in paperback but I haven't chosen to read them... now, I really wish I had!
Honestly, the plot was so detailed, I couldn't work out WHAT the outcome or ending was going to be.
The author fleshed out the characters so well that I'd really like to know what happens to them next (especially Somer.) There are a LOT of characters in the investigation teams which can make it a little tricky initally to work out who's who, but I picked it up fairly quickly, plus the author has a handy description of each character's personality and background at the front of the book, so if you had a paper copy it would be easy to flick back and check if you needed a reminder.
There are two main storylines, which kept up the pace. Sometimes, I find novels can have quite a slow part in the middle, this book definitely did not suffer from that. It covers sexual assault, abuse of position and males as the victim really well.
I read it in 3 sittings (which is fast when you have a 7 month old!) as there were constantly little cliff hangers left at the end of each section making me want to read on (although the author doesn't make you wait too long before reading the next part, thankfully!)
Can't wait to read the other 4 - 5 stars
