I got this book to help with things at work but then ended up changing positions and not really needing it. I'm sure it would be very helpful for someone who needs the information.

Digital marketing book celebrates its 5 golden rings

Anything in its 5th edition must be good. Right?

Understanding Digital Marketing: A Complete Guide to Engaging Customers and Implementing Successful Digital Campaigns, by Damian Ryan, is celebrating its five gold rings edition with its long-running title re-release.

Interesting point about this book: I got on Amazon to see the reader reviews of the past four editions, and I couldn’t find any.

Hmm. Digital marketing. No reviews. Digital marketing. No reviews.

Well, I guess some readers are far too busy to flood places like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Goodreads with reviews about Understanding Digital Marketing, because they are up to their ear lobes employing the vast collection of skills learned while reading its pages.

Okay, okay.

I did find a giant collection of publisher-presented positive reviews for this book. And that result could be because this book’s reviews were so valuable, the publisher moved all the good stuff from the depths of on-the-ground reader reviews, up closer to the title so interested buyers don’t have to scroll straight down to Hades itself, learn what other people think.

And just before I wrote this review, I finally arrived in online bookseller Hades myself and found the actual reader comments, which were of course, very good.

In reality, Understanding Digital Marketing: A Complete Guide to Engaging Customers and Implementing Successful Digital Campaigns is a book I want and need on my everyday shelf. It makes sense to have five editions of this obviously successful and steadfast title because the face of digital marketing changes every few hours. The skills needed to conquer this imperative facet of sales are critical and often determine success from failure in the digital world.

One thing I love about this book is its ability to find harmony between providing a subject overview, and diving deep into the oceanic subject with commanding confidence.

When I was done with Understanding Digital Marketing: A Complete Guide to Engaging Customers and Implementing Successful Digital Campaigns as an e-book, two things occurred: I had a path to developing my own future digital marketing platform, as well as the decisive assurance that I would buy this book in print to have on my shelves for reference – edition after edition.

This reads like a beginner's guide to marketing, and seems like a textbook for college. As a person in marcom for 20+ years, I didn't glean any new insights unfortunately.

This book is long and boring, considering the audience. For starters, it's all in black and white and the layout (graphics, charts, heads, subheads, type size, typography, etc) is unimpressive. If the goal is to get creative people interested in the content, this is a big fail.

The 10 Ps, introduced at the beginning are relevant, but the rest seems quite basic (marcom 101 level). What is a marketing plan? What is SEO, etc.? What is social media? What is email marketing? How to choose a domain?

Read any of the latest marketing blogs and you can get similar, if not better, information.

I appreciate the digital copy of the ebook from Kogan Page, via Netey, in exchange for my review.

Regardless of the size of a business, it will probably need to consider digital marketing at some point. If you are part of a small business, or especially a business of one, you probably will have to do this yourself. Understanding Digital Marketing gives you a great start in planning and executing a marketing plan.

It covers a wide range of topics that you will encounter, such as creating a website, getting found through searches, and what to do on social media. The book serves as a roadmap to help you develop a workable plan, then keep it going. Whether you are just starting, or need to get out of a rut, this book can give you help.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Understanding Digital Marketing is a solid book if you want to better understand the current landscape in marketing. Not only does the author give readers a historical perspective to understand the background, he also gives readers an in-depth look at how the issue is working in today's marketplace.

Author Damian Ryan takes a somewhat controversial stance in the preface by owning the fact that the marketplace is littered with problems. Consumers are worried about privacy and rightfully so. This has made marketing more difficult because consumers don't to be bothered by companies because so many of them are collected are data like we are mere lab mice. Not surprisingly, Ryan cites the great media theorist Marshall McLuhan as a driving force behind this book.

Despite numerous problems, Ryan is clear: digital marketing isn't dead; in fact, it is stronger than ever. However, in order to stand out, companies have to go the extra mile to garner attention and more importantly, keep customers. As I said, Ryan cites the history, statistics, multiple sources and more to give you a clearer picture. Additionally, he writes in an easy-to-follow style. Overall, this is a worthy edition to one's bookshelf.

This book have a few tips for digital marketing but wasn't one of my favourite Marketing books.

This book starts off with the first two words in the preface as "Donald Trump." My first reaction is that this book is going to be full of politics even though the title is understanding digital marketing. Based on the two beginning words most people will already know if they love or hate the book. For me, this book have a few tips for digital marketing but wasn't one of my favorite Marketing books.

Thanks to Kogan Page Lmtd and NetGalley for a copy to honestly review.

Thanks for the opportunity to review this book. Particularly, thank you for sharing tips and tricks of digital marketing, a skill set that is becoming increasingly more important to hone as trends change over time. I was glad to have the chance to read insights in this area. As someone who runs a blog, I found this book to be quite helpful in some ways. I always wonder about books like these because at the end of the day, media is constantly changing and it’s hard even for instant communication to keep up with it, nonetheless published books. Nonetheless, I think there are some basic tenants of communication that are the backbone of marketing on and offline, so this can be a helpful primer for people who are looking to use the internet in this way
