"Flat World - The Arrival: Part 1" by Ivor Kovac is a readable and enjoyable adventure tale that comfortably feels like a well written modern reimagining of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Barsoom series, where the planet Barsoom is replaced with Flat World in another universe, Confederate veteran John Carter is replaced with U.S. Air Force pilot Roger Strauss, the various sentient and warring species of Barsoom are replaced with the various sentient and warring species of Flat World, and so forth. It is enjoyable to vicariously join Roger Strauss as he learns the complex and interesting world and societies of this new planet while trying to understand what role he is playing while striving to do the right thing.

The illustrations, many of which are by the author, were also a skillful touch that helped the reader gain insight into the author's literal viewpoint.

It should come without surprise that being "Part 1", this book ends in a cliffhanger with a number of unanswered questions. Fortunately, since this was a fun book to read, I look forward to learning how it continues when I read "Part 2".

Well that was different? Still unsure if it is in a good way or bad way.. Definitely had me thinking in the end about other planets and worlds beyond our own galaxy, which was the point of this book. The hero of this book is a space traveler and discovers a new world and other intelligent lifeforms. He is immediately treated as stranger and becomes entangled in a war that could destroy the entire civilization.

I was on the edge of my seat most of this book, but there were some slumps in the pace and action. Definitely an interesting sci-fi read. Highly recommended for the action and the good parts. 4.25 stars.

Thanks to Netgalley, Ivor Kovac and Books Go Social for an ARC in exchange for an review,
