I can see how kids love the Big Nate series books. The comic book style makes it fun and easy to read, especially for those who may not enjoy reading just yet. This book would be great for children in 2nd and third grade as the jokes would be relatable for that age group.
Thank you Net Galley and publisher for a free copy for my honest review.
As always, Peirce delivers a series of strips wherein we get to see Nate interacting with his friends during sports and at school. We see his delusions of grandeur when it comes to all of the above. Of course, he spars with Gina and Mrs. Godfrey (even on the first day of school.) There are a series of strips related to his playing on the soccer team including wanting to get some music to play pre-game and how that quickly fizzles and also believing that he should be scouted (even in middle school) and figuring out that that will mean some extra training with someone he'd rather not spend time with.
It is also Nate's turn to take care of Sherman, the class hamster, and, being Nate, doesn't do it in quite the way one might expect.
I am really enjoying the addition of Dee Dee. I can't remember when she was introduced but she's been appearing in more and more of the series. She is a great character and it's nice to see Nate actually relating to a female in a positive manner (not just as a despised teacher or sibling or, on the other hand, as a love interest.)

Opinions are my own
As an educator and a mom, I find myself with a major conundrum. I know how wildly popular the Big Nate series is and applaud the fact that graphic novels are appealing to many children who would otherwise not enjoy reading. My problem lies in the fact that now that I have read a Big Nate book, I find some of the material questionable for the age group that it is appealing to. The storyline bounced around like a ping pong ball in a small glass room. Additionally, a lot of the humor was found in name-calling, obvious dislike for classmates and undeniable disrespect for most adults, especially teachers. Nate and his friends have some fun times together, but it was hard to swallow Nate's dislike for school and most of the adults in his life. However, I will remain hopeful that graphic novels will help unengaged readers eventually find joy in good book. Thank you NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first time reading anything in the Big Nate series, and I can definitely see how a lot of 2nd to 3rd graders would find much of this humor utterly relatable. There were some genuinely cute moments like playing go-fish with a hamster, tap dancing in an end zone, etc.
But I really didn't like the joke about the Playboy mansion and Nate photoshopping a teacher's head on Leonardo DiCaprio's body to make him out to be a "philandering party animal" - Does this joke have any place in a children's book? No. No it does not.
It was a DNF from me at page 42.
I received this book as an eARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This is going to have to be a two copy order. The kids love Big Nate. After the last book, I was worried that he was growing up too fast and my kids would lose interest. But he seems to be in a nice holding pattern now and the kids will be clammering for this book as well as all the others in the series.
Review to come February 2021 on blog/Goodreads.

A brand-new Big Nate, this time not the picture books, but I picked up one of the comic collections again from Netgalley. I just cannot resist. They are just so funny, and brilliant to cheer up your day. I am writing this in November just a few hours before I have to go to the doctor because my knee isn't healing (I fell of my e-bike just a week ago). So yeah, I could use anything that makes me laugh. And Big Nate did it!
In this one we have tons of sports as he plays more and more soccer. But next to fun sports and him rethinking his decisions on if he should continue going pro or not, there is also detentions, school, Valentine's Day (and can I just say that while Nate's ulterior motive wasn't that good, I still loved that he took time to give a card to all the girls in his school?), we see him try to raise money for the scouts by selling cookies (man, why can't we have that here), hold a surprise party for his teacher (he was kinda roped into it), and there is tons more. Nate definitely doesn't have a boring life, no sirree. Every day brings something for him, be it good or bad (though most of the bad things happen because of his attitude towards things). A bit like karma I guess.
Next to Nate we see his friends (Schroeder makes a toddler cry), Chad woos the ladies and reacts to all things food, DeeDee is dramatic and funny as ever, and Teddy has problems with breaking up with his girlfriend (the ending of this one had me in stitches).
I had tons of fun reading this one and I shared plenty with my hubby as I read.
I would definitely recommend this one to all, Big Nate keeps being funny despite him being so cocky about things. I cannot wait for the next collection/book!
Big Nate is such a fun graphic novel series that so well captures the humor level of its intended audience. This one had all the jokes and characters that I've come to expect. I especially like how large the print is in each text bubble so it doesn't seem as overwhelming to readers with a little less confidence in their skills.
The whole gang is here, and they're all in good form. We get a nice helping of Gina, loads of DeeDee, a worthwhile lesson about Valentine's Day, a short-term job in a comic book store, and lots of general Nateness. This didn't have the strong through-story that you sometimes get in the best Nate books, but it was a fun and engaging collection.
Pointless review time – I doubt there are many people going to jump on board with this series at the, ooh, volume 60 mark or wherever we might actually be, just on my say-so. But hey, perhaps you've lapsed your membership of this fun club to be in and haven't turned to the new books for some time. Amongst the longer, one-shot weekend columns here, we get snappier, four-panel yucks, that spread over a fortnight to mine middle school life for all its worth. So Nate has a heinously awkward goalie training programme en route to becoming a soccer star, his friend finds breaking up with his girlfriend an ordeal, and Nate shrivels in horror at the idea he and his arch-nemesis are alike, before getting stuck in a homage-paying birthday party celebration for the teacher he likes the least. Everything here is present and correct for Big Nate fans, and it's a pretty cool discovery if it is chanced upon by a newbie.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read and review.
Big Nate has long been a popular book in my classrooms. I am excited to add this newest one to the classroom library. The pictures are colourful and help tell the story. I like that the text is big and the content is fairly easy for younger readers to decode and understand.
