Anderson offers a fresh perspective on an ancient classic. I especially appreciate the careful way she sets up her translation.
A beautifully written book and thoughtful translation of an immortal text. I was really taken with the author's fascination and relationship with the Far East and would absolutely have loved to have read more about her time in the various countries and her everyday usage of 'wei wu wei' (that's act without acting). A really important translation, looking forward ot discovering more about this author.
I loved how the author patiently explained her thinking as she was translating the Tao Te Ching from a feminist perspective. I found it fascinating to learn what each character means individually, then how the meaning transforms when characters are paired together. The work of translating on its own is impressive in its intricacy. Her translations give rise to breathlessly beautiful stanzas. There were bits of humor sprinkled throughout that always surprised me into a laugh. Highly recommend!
A lovely translation of the Daodejing. The Chinese characters throughout the text were very interesting as well. I just wish there were more of them!
A skilled copy of the Tao on kindle, which reveals that the book uses feminine words like womb, and mother. I have not considered this aspect of the work before and I am grateful to the author for pointing it out, and to netgalley for giving me an advance review copy of the book. I will use it as a reference.
