this was such a well done biography, it had everything that I wanted from this type of book. A lot of the stories were wonderful and made me laugh.
This book was not for me. I've known girlfriends of comedians and have heard the dark side of being in that relationship (it's not always a barrel of laughs and came with a lot of insecurity), so I thought this would be interesting to read.
I was aware going into the story that it was told via vignettes, but I found that they felt incomplete and I found myself wondering a few times why it was shared, as it had nothing to do with being in a relationship with Cork, or to prep us for a future story about Cork. Even some of the stories about Cork were so everyday-run-of-the-mill things, I just wondered why it was there. The BTS stories of early Vegas life was interesting to read about.
TW for those who respond to emotionally abusive relationships. Because that is what this whole book reads as for me. Other reviews proclaimed how funny it was. I couldn't laugh. All I saw was that he would treat her horribly, she would stay silent and make excuses, and kept score every time he would do something mean, not apologize and move on with life like it never happened. How do I know? Because many of the vignettes say as much. And when she was strong enough to walk away? She always went back.
Unfortunately, it just wasn't for me.
Thank you NetGalley, Carolyn V. Hamilton and BooksGoSocial for the copy of HELP! I Married an Alien a Comedian. This is my personal review.
This is a story told by Carolyn the woman who married a comedian Corky Proctor.
They are two vastly different people who love each other enough to stay married and make their marriage work.
Carolyn tells the story with humor, love, ups and downs and all the adventures they go through together. Their life is one that many could not do but they are made for each other. They spend some time in the Peace Corps. The eventually retire in Ecuador.
The book was an interesting look from the outside of the life of a comedian’s spouse.
