April was a great reading month for me.
My 3 favorites were definitely the conclusion to #thepoppywar series which absolutely lived up to the first 2 books, #postcoloniallovepoem which was beautiful and heartbreaking and #thebreak which was a hard read and I don't know how I feel about the ending but has some of the most brutally real characters I've ever read.
I would definitely recommend all 3 but CW for physical and sexual violence
Read These Now 🤯
The Burning God - R F Kuang 5 ⭐
Post Colonial Love Poem - Natalie Diaz 5 ⭐
The Break - Katherena Vermette 5⭐

Black Wave - Kim Ghattas 4
Pride & Prejudice - Jane Austen 4
Follow Me to Ground - Sue Rainsford 4

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
To millions of Jane Austen lovers, this sentence not only opens her novel “Pride and Prejudice,” it also is a promise of a day of reading that transports the reader to a quieter and more peaceful place.
Those who have read and re-read Jane Austen’s novels, however, know that is just the beginning gift of her novels.
The genius of Jane Austen is her brilliant ability to understand human nature and convey that nature in characters that populate her novels. The haughty, the foolish, the degenerate, the narcissist, the ignorant, the hypochondriac, the innocent, the naive, the sweet, the grief stricken, and the loved and unloved, are all depicted in her novels, and her characterizations are just as true in the 21st century as they were in the 19th.
Accordingly, any illustrations created for Austen’s Pride and Prejudice must be as universal and lively as her writing.
Most of Marjolein Bastin’s illustrations meet this test. Her beautiful flowers are extraordinary and convey not only beauty but also life.
Unfortunately, the other illustrations, while accurately portraying the fashion of the time, lack the vivaciousness of the flowers.
Nonetheless, this is a very lovely book that deserves a place on a classic book shelf.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK.
Funny, smart, interesting conversations it has it all!
No bad words is said about this one!
The works of Jane Austen are simply my go to classics. And Pride and Prejudice is my absolut favourite. I love her beautiful written stories and characters.
These versions are simply beautiful. I love the illustrations, the way everything is layed out and I really, really want to have this one as actual book on my shelf.
A beautifully written classic with a gorgeous cover for this re-release. Pride and Prejudice is a classic everyone needs to read at least once.
This particular edition illustrated by Marjolein Bastin is AMAZING! There are the prettiest little illustrations all throughout the book, especially positioned at the beginning and endings of each chapters, sometimes in between as well. The flowers are just gorgeous! The birds adorable! I can't believe how enhanced that this edition is with all the illustrations. Definitely gift-worthy! If you're getting a copy of Pride and Prejudice for someone, GET THIS ONE!
I love reading classics. I enjoy books written by Jane Austen's contemporaries. However, I didn't quite "take" to storyline of Pride and Prejudice like I thought I would. Still, I'm glad to have read it as this novel is a great classic in the literature world. Perhaps some other time I'll try a different Jane Austen novel.
Note to the discerning reader: One of the young ladies runs off with a man and lives with him for a few days before they marry.
Suitable for: 15 and up - Adults
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

My heart forever belongs to Mr. Darcey!
And this cover was beautiful. i really enjoyed this story.
If like me you love flowers and are completely and utterly in love with Mr. Darcy *cof cof* I mean Pride and Prejudice, this edition is for you.
With gorgeous illustration from Marjolein Bastin bringing cute birds and astonishing flowers.
The art is in no way related to the story but makes a perfect addition to a beautiful book.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. Such a great classic! The cover is beautiful.
Pride and Prejudice has to be my second favorite Jane Austen book after Persuasion! Since Pride and Prejudice is a classic novel that people have recreated and re-imagined in film, tv, and books, I will dedicate this review to the book's artwork. The pages are beautifully drawn and give an artisitc look to the new version. This should be marketed as a collectible edition.
In this review, I'll be reviewing the specific edition rather than the book itself, so don't look here for my thoughts on the story, not that I think anyone's looking for that ha! I'm reviewing the Andrews McMeel publication from the Marjolein Bastin Classics Series. This is a lovely edition, beautiful to look at, and of course Bastin's illustrations are gorgeous and add a nice touch to the text. This would make a fine addition to any collection of Austen's works; I collect different editions of my favorite books, and I know others do too. I did take a star off for the omission of a foreword and notes, as these would be helpful to a new reader, and a welcome addition for gift giving.

This is such a pretty edition of my all time favorite book. I really need to invest in the hardcover, because this is P E R F E C T I O N !
I think this collectible version of the classic Pride and Prejudice is a great addition to any fan's collection. I know I am looking forward to having both physical copies of Pride and Prejudice and Emma. Many of the illustrations are subtle, but I really like the full pages as well. The style fits the time period and it just makes it even more enjoyable to read. The illustrations are so beautiful!
I don't think I need to get into how great P&P is, we already know that right? But I do want to highlight that this is a wonderful new edition with illustrations by Marjolein Bastin. Throughout the book little flowers, birds and butterflies pop up in the corners and bottoms of pages. It is a delight!
Some examples
Pride & Prejudice has remained a favorite of my for years. It's a beloved classic that everyone should read to get glimpse of how women and men's role were pereived and carried out in society. It isn't just about it's namesake, the victorian era has much to be said about how society is in today's world as well. It's also about family and of course love and overcoming fears and childish inclinations that might hamper the reality that we still live in today.
I was privileged enough to recieve 3 advance digital copies from the Marjolein Bastin Classics Series. Her artwork blends perfectly with the books and doesn't overshadow the text. I love floral artwork and am glad that Marjolein chose flowers to be her focus. The books chosen are all time greats, and even though I have copies of them already, I will definitely add the hardcovers to my collection.
i will never get tired of loving this book! and this version? absolutely lovely and a must-have! this book never fails to captivate my heart in any form !
I think it is fair to say that most people aren't coming to this review for my feelings about the novel, but rather how I feel about this particular edition. This is a perfect collectible for an Austen lover, best read in the print format. The illustrations are beautiful and add to the ambiance of reading this classic novel. I highly recommend this edition.
I’ve had Pride and Prejudice on my TBR list for years and was delighted to get the chance to read this copy. Unfortunately I was incredibly disappointed with this one. I took every ounce of will power I had to finish this and not add it to my DNF list. I found it very boring and frustrating. The amount of useless gossip and the overall Whitney tone of the book was enough to drive me insane. I am far from a feminist, however Austen paints the females in this book as helpless, vapid, creatures with nothing better to do than gossip and try to find a husband. The only redeeming quality this book had were the stunning illustrations by Marjolein Bastin.
