I am so gutted that this fell just slightly short for me.
Annie is left at the alter, and her embarrassed ex-in-laws insist she goes on the all-paid-for honeymoon to Australia. Not long before she's set to go, she runs into a former childhood friend, who takes the spare ticket and adventures with her.
The Lucky Escape was my first read of Laura Jane Williams, and whilst it was definitely an enjoyable read, it didn't spark that joy and emotional attachment I now tend to expect from good romances. I found myself loving, and then hating, the main character, who contradicted herself every so often. Patrick was a lovely character and I did get that 'swoon' feeling that is due to the love interest, but his reaction in the last few chapters irritated me and I didn't feel like it was justified.
Overall, something just didn't hit right, and I don't know whether it was me or the book. LJW's other books have been recommended so I might try her again, just in case this was a one off.
I really enjoyed reading this book, it did have me wanting to carry on reading all the way through first after her fiancé leaves her at the alter, to then her going on her honeymoon but I also found it your typical rom com book which is never a bad thing when that is what you want and for me it was. It definitely has its laugh out loud moments and even bits where it can make u want to cry.
The Lucky Escape made me smile. It was a great summer read to get lost in. Everything that happened was expected and typical with a romance read, so don't go into thinking you will be surprised at any point. Just enjoy the ride of two old friends falling in love with each other after shit hits the fan for Annie. I feel like quite a few novels have been set with this type of love story lately, and I have enjoyed every single one. I'm not mad with the whole falling in love while on vacation trope!
A refreshing read about Annie and Patrick who reconnect by chance while both nursing broken hearts.
Annie, who has been jilted at the alter, has a no-expense spared honeymoon booked and paid for by her delightful would-have-been in-laws and they insist she still jets off to Oz
This book details the trip in all its glory. A gorgeous summer read. Thanks to netgalley for the advance copy!
The Lucky Escape is a fabulous read following the aftermath of the worst day of Annie's life, getting dumped at her own wedding!
It is a tale of rediscovering one's self, re-evaluating and essentially rising from the ashes of a devastating relationship blowup, idyllically set largely in Australia. Generally light and easy reading, the excellent escapism value and fabulous armchair travel on offer outweighed any downsides for me.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review The Lucky Escape ARC.
Loved loved loved!!! I could not put this down, i enjoyed this too much, I finished it in 2 days! It eas the first I have read from Laura Jane Williams and I will definitely be reading more from her! A great feel good summer cocktail read
I loved everything about this gorgeous book. When Annie is jilted on her wedding day she feels equally broken and baffled. With her ex fiancé awol she has no answers as to why he dumped her in such a cowardly and heartless fashion.
She tries to ease her mind by throwing herself into regular bootcamp sessions, and it's here that she's reunited with an old friend, Patrick. Someone who reminds her of happier times.
When Annie has the chance to go on what would have been her honeymoon to Australia, she drunkenly invites Patrick to join her. And he drunkenly agrees. And it just might be the best drunken decision they've both ever made.
I laughed out loud many times throughout this book, I fell in love with Australia and I most definitely fell in love with Annie and Patrick. Deeply romantic without being schmaltzy. Full of wisdom and warmth, The Lucky Escape is a story to cherish and curl up with. It will cheer your soul.
Annie is jilted at the altar, she is devastated, who wouldn’t be?! A honeymoon to Australia has been booked and paid for so why shouldn’t she go on it? That’s the least she deserves surely. Bringing Patrick who she has only just rekindled her friendship from many years ago, we know where this will go, or will it?
I really liked both Annie and Patrick’s characters, they were regular people who you could imagine are your friends. Thankfully they got along well or it could have made the most awkward non-honeymoon ever.
There were awkward moments and funny moments.
The Lucky Escape was written beautifully, even though this is not my usual go-to genre, I am so glad I grabbed this one, it was a great rom-com.
This was a fun easy read perfect for summer! It reminded me a bit of the Unhoneymooners. The main character gets broken up with on her wedding day and decided to go on her honeymoon with a childhood friend. You can kind of predict what happens next ;)
This was ok, just a bit meh.. It's very cutesy. The stakes never felt hugely high and there was really no jeopardy. The plot trotted along exactly the way you'd expect. Kinda surprised by the number of top star reviews.
Laura Jane Williams really delivered with this one. It was just the right fun and light read I've been looking for. Honestly, you can't go wrong with a good romantic comedy like this one.
This was not the book for me for some reason... I was expecting something different, but It took me a couple months to find the will to finish it...
I'm not saying it was bad, only really that it did not excite me. It says nothing about the author or her work, only about my current state.
This is an honest review in exchange for the ARC from Netgalley. I thank all the people involved in granting me this copy :) have a great day and read great books
Laura Jane Williams does it again. I picked up one of her other novels (Our Stop) on a cover buy whim and I was pleasantly surprised by Williams' writing style. In The Lucky Escape, the author again does not disappoint. I absolutely loved this, everything about it was all I ever want in a romance book and it was the exact read I needed at that moment in time. I devoured every page and couldn't put it down. The characters were instantly likeable and relatable. To classify this novel as a romance is neglecting all the other wonderful aspects of this book. While yes, the romance is there and made my knees weak and my heart race, there is also these absolutely amazingly cultivated friendships and elements of family dynamic that are just such wonderful additions to this book. The book moved at a comfortable pace, and kept my interest from start to finish. Laura Jane Williams slays again, and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who's looking for a new contemporary romance to binge.
This was a great read for summer! I liked the characters and their relationships and I liked that they went on vacation.. It was a bit like I was on vacation too! So yeah.. solid read for summer :)
The cover of this book and the fact that it’s a romance, made me instantly think it would be perfect for summer. Unfortunately, the book did fall a bit flat for me. While I enjoyed the premise (Annie is a jilted bride, left at the alter), and liked the positive message about finding who you were and are meant to be. However, it felt a bit rushed for her and Patrick. I feel like if a character is going on this transformative journey, they should have the chance to do that free of a romantic pull. Maybe a few months down the road (time jump the story?) it would have felt less rushed/hasty. It wasn’t a bad book, just not the one for me.
Thank you to Net Galley and Avon Books for the e-galley in exchange for an honest review.
Abandoned at the altar when her fiancé changes his mind, Annie Wiig is left devastated. As she tries to put her life back together, she meets Patrick Hummingbird, who she’d last seen at drama camp twenty years earlier. Their friendship rekindles and when her no longer in-laws tell her to take the honeymoon anyway, Patrick seems the best choice for companion. But as they get close in the Australian delights, will their histories cause problems between them?
I enjoyed reading The Lucky Escape. Annie and Patrick were both characters you could love and laugh along with, and if the concept of going half way across the world with somebody you hadn’t seen for twenty years might seem a little unlikely, somehow it worked. The descriptions of the Australian places they visit added depth and enjoyment to the story.
A feel good romance that brightens up the day.
I adored this story. The main character was relatable and her little sister was adorable and hilarious.
The writing was great and made you feel everything the character was going through
This was such an easy ready. Annie does what is expected of her and that means planning to marry her college sweetheart despite her misgivings. Well that was the plan until he pulled the pin moments before the ceremony. Despite her heartbreak, Annie decides to take someone surprising on her honeymoon and start living by her own rules. Has she had a lucky escape or is she just moving on to new problems? Really enjoyable read.
Hooray Annie is getting married! It's her wedding day but where is the groom, the man she has waited so long to marry, Alexander? He's done a runner and she's left to pick up the pieces including their luxury honeymoon.
After spending a substantial amount of time hiding away from the world she joins a local gym where she bumps into an old friend, Patrick. Over a few drinks one night Annie crazily invites Patrick to join her on her honeymoon, and after a first class flight and endless 5 star hotels the inevitable happens but can it last when they are home?
Amazing book, loved it from beginning to end and now want to see the world from a first class, 5 star point of view.
Thanks for allowing me to read, cannot wait to read more from Laura Williams.
I loved how this story really makes you think about living life to the full. Laura Jane Williams sensitively deals with some traumatic issues and at times I was crying big ugly tears. At others I was laughing out loud as we followed Annie in her journey of self discovery. Annie’s friends and young sister were great characters and her relationships with them made the story completely for me.
