The Lucky Escape follows Annie, a bride left at the alter. The first part of the book is her journey of self discovery post being jilted. The next part chronicles her journey to Australia with an old friend from camp. In the last part of the book we see how Annie moves on from the jilting by rediscovering herself, making changes to her life, and possibly entering into a lasting romance. Overall it’s a cute book albeit a little slow to start.
When Annie is left at the alter on her wedding day she is broken hearted. In the end she decides to go on her honeymoon and take Patrick, an old friend she is reacquainted with at the gym. The story is reasonably predictable but not in a bad read. This would be a perfect holiday read.
Going on your bougie honeymoon with a man you didn’t marry - *clutches pearls* How scandalous! Tell me everything.
When I read the synopsis I was pumped for this book, It’s such a juicy concept. There were some real laugh out loud with second hand embarrassment moments. It was cute, however I started to loose motivation around the 3/4 mark.
Annie is going through a lot of emotional upheaval in her life and I liked that she was a bit all over the map with what she wanted for herself. It felt real and relatable.
Patrick had this happy, confident, throw caution to the wind air about him. As we get to know him better you see little cracks in that, making him more approachable. Some of the silliness would have gotten on my nerves in real life though, it took his swoon factor down a bit.
The Australia part was great, I liked their tension and near misses but when they finally ‘get together’ it felt sort of anticlimactic. There wasn’t much heat between them and while I was rooting for Annie to figure her life out, I found myself indifferent to whether her and Patrick made it in the end.
This was a 3 star for me. Cute and entertaining but once I was done it left my mind.

I found The Lucky Escape to be a very cute, light hearted read. If we’re being honest, I think we are all ready for an escape right now, so this book was perfect. If you're looking for a read that is packed with adventure, seeking self-love, a free honeymoon to Australia, and a handsome man that brings out the best side in you, then I recommend this one for you! Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC!
Hilariously entertaining and super enjoyable. This book is the very best brain candy meant to be devoured in one sitting.
Laura Jane Williams never disappoints. Romantic and charming but still real, the best book to disappear into during the pandemic.. a lucky escape.
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams was a bit of a slow start for me. I couldn't really get into it and the story line of the jilted bride left at the alter felt flat and cliche. But when Annie goes on the honeymoon without her husband and learns how to truly be herself - the plot quickly became much more interesting (and romantic!). The rest of the book flew by and I couldn't wait to see what happened to Annie at the end. If you like romantic stories with a HEA, this is a cute story. I would definitely try other books by this author!
Annie is jilted on the day of her wedding when her fiancé Alexander is a no-show. Alexander's parents and sister Annie go on the three-week honeymoon in Australia anyway and take along a companion of her choosing. She agreed to go on the trip, but she takes her childhood friend Patrick she recently reconnected with.
The story is relatively predictable, as most of them are. The heroine will end up with the hero. It was still enjoyable to read, even though there were some inconsistencies. I felt the story was divided into almost three sections
Being left at the altar
Traveling to Australia for a non-honeymoon
Returning home to London after said non-honeymoon
I enjoyed the first two parts of the story more than the last. I thought the third part of the story and his character didn't match the strong woman that she was described as being in the beginning. She felt indecisive and was seriously struggling with self-esteem issues which are understandable being left at the altar.
Overall, the lucky escape was entertaining and light read.

The synopsis was so intriguing to me and I love a good, light, romance! Despite the premise being pretty predictable, I found it a perfect light reading with a decent writing style. The side characters are great, and the honeymoon parts are also quite fun. I do wish there was more of the honeymoon part though.
It's not a serious read, but I also don't think it's meant to be. If that's what you want going into it, then you're going to be disappointed. It's a perfect escapist read for a winter day.
This was a delightful “beach read”. It was the perfect mix of fun and flirty mixed with heartbreak and self discovery.
This was the first book I’ve read by this author. I’ll definitely read more in the future.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for allowing me to read this e-book.
Funny and sarcastic, full of love and friendship, the Split is the book you’ll need on a grey day, believe me. The story is about Ally, she goes to stay with her dad in Sheffield after her girlfriend Emily broke up with her, so she decides that she will take Emily’s cat… Because this is the only way Ally thinks that her ex will talk to her again. But, in Sheffield Ally will reconnect with Jeremy, an old friend who will convince her to make a marathon together to make their exes a little bit jealous. Their friendship will help them to recover from their breakups and see things in a new perspective; and maybe find some new love?
This is a sweet and emotive story, easy to fall in love with the characters and understand Ally’s bitterness. Because in a relationship there are a lot of things that can go wrong, is not something linear and both parts of the couple have their guilt for the break up.
I had some good laughs during this read and I loved that the story is full of LGBT characters, it’s time that we can find good books with all type of characters! Ready for “The Split”?
The premise of this book was very cliché-a story I've read and seen in movies time and time again. Woman gets jilted at the altar and goes on a honeymoon with an old friend; who she falls in love with and she finds herself through her relationship with him and the trip. Honestly, the book read like a not so great lifetime movie. The characters have no depth, they're not likable and the main character has no redeeming qualities. It was difficult to finish this book.
A wonderful romcom telling the story is a jilted bride that decides that instead of moping, she is going to change her life around. Highly recommended!
This book was a really slow start for me (so much so that I put it down and finished another book first). I came back to the story and once I got to the honeymoon part it picked up. I just wish the backstory wasn’t as long, I almost put the book down and did not finish. Overall the second third of the book flew for me and I enjoyed the ending. I would give this book 3 out of 5 stars. Thank you netgalley and publisher for the advanced read.
I haven't read much till I started this book and it's given me the push to read again it's brill and the characters really are set out in this.
Cant wait to read more.
The Lucky Escape had The Unhoneymooners vibes but set on the opposite side of the world.
When we first meet Annie, she's in absolute shock after being left at the altar. Not too long after reconnecting with an old camp friend, Patrick, she's given the opportunity to take her three week honeymoon anyway. Of course, she takes Patrick as her plus one. And the rest is history.
What I liked most about The Lucky Escape was Annie's character development. Over the course of the story, she learns to love herself for who she is and she learns to stand up for herself and what she wants. She learns to advocate for her wants and needs, instead of constantly submitting to everyone around her.
While I liked the relationship between Annie and Patrick, Annie's inner dialogue when they first got together was a bit juvenile. It just didn't seem to fit with the rest of the book.
Overall, though, this was an enjoyable read and my favorite so far by Laura Jane Williams.
THE LUCKY ESCAPE - LAURA JANE WILLIAMS 3.5/5 ⭐️
When the day comes for her to marry her longtime sweetheart, Alexander, Annie gets unexpectedly heartbroken when she is left at the altar with little more than an email sent to the wedding planner by way of explanation.
After reuniting with a friend from long ago, Patrick reminds her of how she used to be: more carefree, less calculated. She makes a vow to herself that she will say yes to every opportunity that comes her way, including her honeymoon. Patrick convinces her to allow him the extra ticket to Australia, where they slowly but surely seek solace in the heartbreak that they have endured.
Could this “yes” be the change Annie has been looking for her whole life, or is she setting herself up to suffer through another broken heart?
It took a while for my attention to be grabbed when I started this book. The first third of the book is mostly Annie discussing her heartbreak with her close friends and sister, the second part is the honeymoon, and the last part is when they return. The first part of the book was pretty boring and repetitive, but when I got to the honeymoon is when things started getting interesting. When they got home from Australia, the book fell really flat unfortunately. The sweet and bubbly relationship that formed between the couple suddenly becomes flighty. I was happy with the ending, besides feeling that it was abrupt and we didn’t really get to see anything bloom.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Avon books, and Laura Jane Williams for an ARC!
I loved loved loved this book! The setting of Australia, Annie finding her. True self, and Patrick learning how to respect his past while moving on in the future just made the story brilliant! I laughed out loud, I felt sad, and most of all I smiled with glee. This will become one of my most recommended rom coms!
3.5 stars.
Having heard mixed to good things about Laura Jane Williams' previous books, I was excited to give this one a read.
Given the current situation that we are in, where we can't travel, this sounded like it was going to transport me somewhere warm and sunny and it did.
But sadly it wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be.
The premise was one that was really interesting and sounded like a great idea for a rom-com-style story. But it just lacked some things for me.
The pacing was off a bit and I feel like the two main characters lacked the sort of chemistry or longing that I look for in these types of books. As a result, them getting together in the end felt quite anticlimactic.
That being said, I am intrigued enough by what I read in this to go back and read her earlier books.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A very light romantic read.
Annie is left at the alter, her future mother-in-law said she should use the honeymoon tickets they had bought for the couple, !st class tickets to Australia.
When Annie meets an old school friend Patrick she invites him to Australia with her.
Patrick is a very loveable character, though Annie can get on your nerves at times.
You know where this story is going so it`s no surprise where it ends up but a good journey on the way.
