This book was mostly slow and frustrating. The main character was uninteresting and her reactions to situations were not believable. The rest of the characters were forgettable. This one is a pass for me.
Something happened at #6 in The Circle, a private community of homes, so the house was empty for a year prior to it finally being SOLD to Leo and Alice for a price that couldn't be beat. When Alice realizes why the house had been empty and cheap, she becomes obsessed with finding out what happened the night Nina, the therapist who occupied the home before them, was murdered. This book will keep you on your toes, suspecting anything and everyone, and at first, I was so interested as the setting and plot was intriguing- I mean an exclusive community in London? It can't get better than that! However, none of the characters in this book were likable, and Alice's questionable decisions made this book not as enjoyable.
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an arc in return for an honest review!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC copy of this novel. From the first page I couldn't put this book down. The characters were all likeable but I knew I couldn't trust all of them. It took me until the end to figure out who was dangerous. A quick, suspenseful read that will leave you waiting for B.A. Paris' next novel!
Paris does it again!!! This one kept me guessing and guessing right along with Alice, I think I had as many suspects as Alice did and figured it out just before Alice did!
When Alice moves in with her boyfriend things seem to be going great they have a beautiful house in a gated community great new neighbors but is there a secret hiding in this idyllic neighborhood? What will Alice do when she finds out the truth about their new house. Obsession grips Alice and she must find out the truth of what happened in her home, so begins this guessing game that may have fatal consequences.
Olivia Dowd & Thomas Judd narration was so well done Dowd did a really good job of bringing the emotions to life.
Another hit from B.A. Paris, the only problem with getting this one early is I have to wait even longer for her next book!
4 Stars
I received this audiobook from Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for a fair and honest review.
Thank you St Martins Press and Netgalley for a ARC of this book for an honest review.
The Therapist by B.A. Paris is about a new couple who decide to move to London so they can see each other move and by a house together. It's not until a private investigator stops at the house and mentions a woman was murdered in that home that Alice decides she can't live anymore. That is when the problems begin with Alice and her relationship, the neighbors and the spookiness of the house.
I found this book moved along well and kept me interested. I felt like you could kind of tell where the book was going.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC of the Therapist by B.A. Paris to review. This new book by B.A. Paris did not disappoint! It was packed with intrigue, suspense, and mystery. There were many characters at play in this book that kept me guessing right until the end. This book was one I did not want to put down and I did not see the twists at the end coming! Highly recommend to any readers of psychological thrillers!
I have read and enjoyed all of B.A. Paris's novels and I have to say I think this is the best one yet. The suspense that Paris built from page one kept me glued to the novel. Every time I thought I was one step ahead of Alice in figuring out what actually happened at Number 6 I was thrown back to square one. I was both surprised and satisfied by the ending of the novel. Paris wove in all of her plot threads beautifully and it is an ending that I will not soon forget!
When Alice and Leo move into an exclusive gated community, The Circle, Leo is thrilled and Alice is... well Alice is trying to make things work. Initially, she can't pinpoint the source of her reticence to be in the house alone, the forbidding aura that she feels emanating from the area, but as she comes to find out that someone in The Circle is keeping secrets she feels her intuition may be the one thing she can trust. Alice falls deeper and deeper into the web of lies, half-truths, and secrets everyone in The Circle seems desperate to keep buried. Alice, however, feels drawn to her home's previous owner and feels determined to find the truth about what exactly happened to Nina.
The Therapist by B.A. Paris is another one of her psychological thrillers. We meet our heroine, Alice at the start, as she is planning to move with her boyfriend, Leo to an exclusive cul-de-sac neighborhood, The Circle. Leo was thrilled to get the house at a great price, since it has been on the market for a year, which enabled him to buy it at a reduced cost. After making renovations on the house, Leo and Alice move in, and are happy to be in a safe gated area.
Alice goes out of her way to meet her neighbors, but in a short period, she learns why Leo got the house so cheap. The woman who lived in her house, was a therapist, who was murdered; to top it off, the woman’s name was Nina, which happens to be Alice’s deceased sisters name, who died years before. Alice is upset about not knowing about the murder, and that Leo kept it a secret, and she is very angry at him, causing him to not be home as much, at least until she gets over it; if she does.
Alice meets a private investigator, who gives her more information about the murder, and she becomes obsessed with finding out the truth. Did Nina’s husband kill her, or was someone else the real killer. Alice spends her free time, asking questions of her neighbors to gather more information, and is convinced the husband did not kill his wife. With Leo mostly away, Alice becomes paranoid, as she suspects someone is coming into her house at night; leading her be suspicious of all of her neighbors.
Though Alice seemed like a nice person, she was way overboard, changing her mind constantly as to who she suspects. Her behavior was off the wall, totally unreliable and frankly as time went on, I was not liking her at all. To paraphrase a friend’s slogan; I thought Alice put herself in danger so many times, that she most definitely was TSTL (too stupid to live).
Despite the heroine being a bit crazy obsessed, the story was a very good thriller mystery. The last half of the book was a wild ride to the climax, that kept me on the edge of my seat. Just when you thought you knew who the killer was, another surprise twist occurs. I will say that from the start, I did suspect who it might be, and even though I was beginning to change my mind, I was right. LOL.
The Therapist was very well written by B.A. Paris, though I would like a smarter, less stressful heroine. If you like a mystery thriller that has your attention from start to finish, I suggest you read The Therapist.
The first few chapters of this book felt a bit slow to me, but I kept going because the I found the main character to be interesting. She has had a tragic past and she is now making a big change in her life, moving with her boyfriend so they can spend more time together. Alice's personality, self-doubt, internal struggles really come through and even when I was just delving into the book, Alice was enough to keep me coming back to the book. Then came the actual move and the first revelations and the book goes from interesting to a page turner I kept coming back to in my breaks from work. I of course kept thinking I had it all figured out, yet I didn't, not the main mystery nor other reveals that happen throughout. The clues are all there, and they don't feel misleading in hindsight, it's all very tight and would make a fantastic movie. My favorite part was how Alice's personality played into how things turned out. Very well done.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love this author. I never know what's going on in her books until she wants me to. I basically suspected everyone in this novel. And so did the protagonist.
Alice moves into a house in a gated community in London with her boyfriend. And after not questioning why it was such a good price, she finds out that the previous owner (a therapist) was murdered in the bedroom upstairs, possibly by her husband. Alice becomes obsessed, tries to find out who actually did it, and starts to believe that the ghost is visiting her at night. Among other things.
I liked it a lot.
B A Paris has another 5 star novel with The Therapist. I was on the edge of my seat while reading this thriller that is filled with so many twists and turns! The characters are multi-dimensional. The plot moves quickly. I did not want to put my kindle down. I don't want to give away any spoilers and you can read the summary on any website. I love Alice, the main character. Was she crazy or was she sane? Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
I could not get past the first several chapters. I am not a fan of European set mysteries, for the most part and should have realized. It is personal preference so I can't effectively evaluate this novel. If that is not a hundred characters, maybe it will be now. I do not want to give a star rating as it would not be fair since I did not complete enough of the novel to be fair.
This was a page turner and I twist I didn’t see happening towards the end. I thought I had it figured out and that wrench thrown in was really good. B.A. Paris never disappoints. Thank you for the read!
This is a good one! I love a good neighborhood suspense story, and this is a superior example. A young couple move into a new home in a gated community, but Alice doesn’t have the full picture. At various points, everyone is a suspect. Read this one in a day!
Thanks to NetGalley for the ebook for my Kindle!
What a surprise! I didn't figure out "who done it" but keep in mind the title of the book as a good hint! A good thriller and suspense story.
BA Paris is a must-read author for me. I always FLY through her books, and The Therapist is no exception. I finished it in a day. This wasn’t her best book in my opinion, but still great.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press, MacMillan Audio and NetGalley for both the ebook and audiobook versions of The Therapist! I really enjoyed both reading and listening!
I haven't read a B.A. Paris novel that I haven't loved and The Therapist is no exception! I typically don't love when a book starts out slow, but with this one, I could tell that every detail was intentional so it easily kept my attention even though there wasn't a lot of action at the beginning.
In this book, Alice and her boyfriend Leo move into a gated community called The Circle. They had been in a long-distance relationship prior to moving in together so they're both excited about a fresh start and becoming friends with their new neighbors. Alice learns a dark secret about the previous owner of their house and becomes obsessed with learning more, eventually getting herself into trouble by trusting the wrong people.
I loved the gated community setting that felt safe and secure, yet secretive and at one point or another I was convinced that each neighbor in The Circle could be a suspect! I loved the pace of this thriller and I was satisfied with how everything wrapped up in the end. I'd definitely recommend this book and author to others!
I love this author! Her books always entertain, and her most recent novel, “The Therapist”, is another nailbiter. And it’s so much fun reading about the lifestyles in other countries; the restaurants, shops, parks, and neighborhoods. This is the closest I’ll ever get to actually living in London.
Alice moves in with her boyfriend in an exclusive neighborhood and almost immediately starts to regret leaving her quaint small town cottage behind. The neighbors are cliquish, nosy, and terribly busy keeping up with each other. Alice wants to fit in, but she keeps feeling like something isn’t quite right. Then she learns her new home is the site of a terrible murder a year earlier. She’s angry with her boyfriend, Leo. How could he withhold that bit of history from her?
As Alice learns more from her neighbors about the previous tenants, the pace of busyness and gossip reaches a fever pitch. It’s confusing to Alice; she doesn’t know who to trust or who to believe.
As she works with a local private investigator, Alice is determined to get to the bottom of what actually happened in this odd little neighborhood, no matter at what cost to her, personally. Another “must-read” from Ms. Paris!
Sincere thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin”s Press for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. The publishing date is July 13, 2021.
When Alice and Leo move into a newly renovated house in The Circle, a gated community of exclusive houses, it is everything they’ve dreamed of. But appearances can be deceptive…
As Alice is getting to know her neighbours, she discovers a devastating secret about her new home, and begins to feel a strong connection with Nina, the therapist who lived there before.
Alice becomes obsessed with trying to piece together what happened two years before. But no one wants to talk about it. Her neighbors are keeping secrets and things are not as perfect as they seem…
My Thoughts:
We are introduced to The Therapist with a narrative from the past involving a therapist having a session with someone.
We begin to believe that the therapist from the past might be the murdered character Nina Maxwell, who lived in the house now occupied by Leo and Alice, but are we wrong about that?
As we follow Alice’s quest to help a P.I. figure out who really murdered Nina, we begin to doubt everyone who lives in The Circle…except the one we should be adding to our list of suspects.
A twisted tale that carries us along to an intense ending that earned 5 stars for me.
***The ARC came from the publisher via NetGalley.
Great new read from B.A. Paris. The Therapist is a powerful read that centres around the secrets that can hide in a house, relationship, and within friends.
When Alice and Leo move into a new house, Alice immediately feels there is something amiss in the house and with the neighbours. When she finds out a woman was Murfreesboro in her house, she struggles to piece together all of the lies and secrets before it is too late.
I simply couldn’t put this book down and enjoyed the twists and turns right up to the end. Highly recommended.
