Not my favourite B.A. Paris--this felt a lot more like a murder mystery/detective novel than a psychological suspense novel, and I'm not a huge detective book person. The dialogue felt quite stilted in a lot of places as well. Still worth the read and easy to fly through, but not quite on bar with some of her other books.
This story kept me guessing, which I do love. However, I felt there were too many characters and I didn’t get to know any of them.
Omg this was so good. Not sure what I expected but I went in blind to and I'm so glad I did.
Thanks for this Arc. Can't wait to read more form this author.
The Therapist by B.A. Paris is a good read! It is a psychological thriller set in London, centering around a gated street with a few families. The newest residents discover that their new home was the location of a murder, which none of the other resident care to speak too much about. Strange happenings further tweak their curiosity and suspicions that all is not as it appears...
The Therapist follows the story of Alice, who along with her partner (boyfriend) Leo, moves into a house in a gated neighborhood. She quickly finds out that the house they move into is the scene of a murder. Clearly she's not comfortable with this and wants more information. She suspects the neighbors and Leo on her way to finding the truth.
YET she stays in the house even though she 100% believes that someone is sneaking in at night and leaving a variety of "calling cards." She does research and comes up with a lot of great clues... but doesn't investigate everything that she should. Alice comes across as not too bright throughout most of the book and her actions are infuriating. Leo is also very unlikeable, but also not too smart.
Overall, the plot was fast-moving and I wanted to find out what happens. I suspected part of the end, but not the whole twist, which was good... but I still never liked Alice. This was a good domestic thriller, but you have to get over the fact that Alice makes a lot of questionable decisions.
I’ve read every B.A. Paris book and none of them have come close to how amazing Behind Closed Doors was… until now. The Therapist feels like B.A. Paris going back to her roots. This is hands down the best book she’s written since Behind Closed Doors and I was absolutely sucked in.
Alice and Leo are a couple who have been mostly long-distance and have now decided to move in together in London. Leo chooses a house within an exclusive gated community named The Circle. What Alice can’t understand is how such a house in such an exclusive neighborhood could be so cheap. As the book progresses, we find out what secrets lay buried within the house and within the neighborhood.
It’s amazing to think that a book with mostly unlikable characters had me flying through the pages. Alice is obsessive, naïve, and a bit dim. Bad vibes fly off Leo from the very start and only get worse throughout the book. The neighbors are pretty terrible people. Somehow it all works though. There isn’t really anyone to root for, but the mystery of it all keeps you reading.
There were parts of the plot that were predictable, but I didn’t see one part of the twist coming at the end. I love a good twist! I don’t want to give too much away though.
If you liked Behind Closed Doors, I personally think you’ll like this one as well.
A big thank you to St. Martin’s Press for sending me an ARC through NetGalley to read and review!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the e-ARC of The Therapist! This was a great, quick thriller that kept me guessing until the end. The main character, Alice, and her partner Leo move into "The Circle" which is a small, tight knit gated community. Right away you learn everything is not as idyllic as it seems and pretty soon you are wrapped up in the lies and secrets these neighbors are holding. Once I got into this book I couldn't put it down and B.A. Paris did a great job of stringing along clues to unraveling a secret that most of this neighborhood seems intent on putting to rest. Definitely recommend for summer reading!
Naive Alice and shifty secretive Leo are a new couple who after a short romance decide to live to together . Alice is a country girl who agrees to sublet her cottage and live with Leo in London in an exclusive neighborhood in a gated community. Leo annoys me because he spends most of the book away from this home he chose . Alice isn’t comfortable with her new surroundings and her “ Desperate Housewives” / “Mad Men “ neighborhood. I don’t blame her , it’s very cliquey . Here’s an example of Alice at 11% “realizing I’m being boring , I decide to stop talking about the man who gate-crashed the party.” Well that gate crasher was in her home shouldn’t she be curious? Alice has a quest . She is determined to find the mystery man. Eventually Alice discovers why the house was a bargain. She’s already afraid to sleep in the bedroom alone, as Leo is never home. Now she isn’t sleeping at all. Sneaky Leo kept that piece of news to himself. Alice discovers that the mystery man is a private investigator. She assists Thomas as he tries to clear his client’s brother name as of the murder of the therapist . In Alice’s mind everyone in the community is a suspect. She’s constantly second guessing herself.
The story isn’t as fast paced as Paris’s other novels. In fact It was a bit slow at times. But at 89% the book took a wild turn. By that time I had a theory about the murderer but not that outcome.
3 stars until 89% and then 4 stars for the ending.
Thank you to St Martin’s Press, NetGalley and B A Paris for the ebook to read and honestly review.
What if you moved into a new house and then discovered a murder had been committed there? Alice is shattered to discover this fact about her own new home, especially when she learns that the murdered woman's name was Nina, the same as Alice's sister, who died in a tragic car accident years before. The author presents an intriguing setup, including a close-knit, circular gated neighborhood in London where everyone can watch one another, which creates a locked-door mystery feel. The cast of characters keeps you guessing, and the twists and turns are as satisfying as they are surprising. Alice comes off as a bit overly dramatic and maybe even obsessive, and the relationship between her and partner Leo is underdeveloped, but the mystery will keep you turning the pages. This is one of the better endings to a thriller I have read recently and I appreciated how the book worked up to a clever and unexpected conclusion.
One of the best books I have read this year!! Alice moves into a new house with a horrible secret. The house is in a gated community with friendly neighbors but you can’t trust a word they say. Separated from her childhood home and still dealing with the loss of her family, Alice doesn’t know who to trust or what to believe. All she wants is to move on with her life and make friends but that proves to be an impossible task. I found this book to be entertaining with nonstop twists and guessing. Highly enjoyable.
Full of the twists you expect from B.A. Paris. Think you’ve got it all figured out? Think again! It’s hard being the new neighbor in the close-knit gated community.
Can a book have too much and not enough? The answer is yes and that’s exactly what’s wrong with this book. Too many not important details, things that keep getting repeated in different words and the suspense didn’t really start to pick up until the end of the book. By that time I was tried of Alice and her back and forth decisions.
Not my favorite of this author’s.
For the most part, I really enjoy Paris’ books. But “The Therapist” just didn’t do it for me. I had a tough time keeping interested in what was going on in the book and Alice, the main character, was a little annoying.
A solid read. It is reminiscent of another book I read a while ago, so I spent some time wondering if I had somehow already read it. Twists and turns were done well enough that I had suspicions, but never could narrow to any one culprit until it was fully revealed. I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them and this book enough to keep an eye out for future publishing.
Another great book by B A Paris! I didn't want to put it down. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy.
Thank you St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for the ARC of BA Paris' newest. The Therapist is a fast read that makes you want to read "just one more chapter". Like the protagonist, I could not figure out whodunnit and my mind went in circles throughout the book trying to figure it out. Did not see the twists at the end and as long as you're able to suspend some belief, is super enjoyable from beginning to end.
Much better than Paris' last book, The Dilemma. Not quite as thrilling as "Behind Closed Doors". Still definitely recommend.
At the beginning of the book, Alice starts talking about just moving to The Circle and how she has only meet 1 neighbor. She meets Maria, as this lady is putting her 3 boys and 2 dogs into a People Carrier. A WHAT? I so had to look that up, while Americans say Minivan, British people say People Carrier. OK! I only say something cause i think its weird but cute at the same time. This book grabbed me from the prologue, and of course i'm nosey for secrets. This book will be hard for anyone to put down. This is my first book by B.A. Paris and i see why everyone raves about her books. This book lives up to the hype. Grab your a copy when it comes out, you won't be disappointed.
Thank You for the ARC #NetGalley #TheTherapist #StMartinsPress.
This is about a woman who moves into a new home with her significant other to start a new life together. The relationship begins to unravel when Alice learns that her lover, Leo, didn't tell her that the former occupant of the house had been murdered. While her attachment to Leo begins to end, Alice becomes obsessed with the murder, A stranger shows up at her housewarming and at first she believes him to be one of the neighbors. He subsequently tells her that he is a detective trying to solve the murder and she becomes swept up with helping to solve the case. The suspense is well done as long as one can ignore the most obvious of suspects.
Another fantastic psychological thriller from B.A. Paris, The Therapist will have you wondering the whole way through. Alice and Leo move in together into a house in a neighborhood known as The Circle. But there is a secret that the people living in The Circle hold. When Alice finds out what it is she panics. She feels someone is watching her. Is it someone who lives in The Circle? Who can she trust? And more importantly, who can't she trust?
As a big fan of B.A. Paris, I was so excited to receive a copy of this book to review. I simply could not put it down. All of the neighbours are suspicious which just adds to the juiciness of the book. I guessed the plot twist about 2/3 of the way through but had no idea how it would manifest itself. A superb thriller that will have you biting your nails until the end.
Thank you to Netgalley, B.A. Paris, and St. Martin's Press for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was fast-paced and easy to read. But man, why did Alice so lacking in intelligence?
**BEWARE OF SPOLERS**
She suspected everyone of murder at some point, except for the murderer, who was some guy who just showed up at her party. And she read into everything anyone said, expect for the glaring contradiction between the elderly woman’s account of how Thomas got in (I buzzed him in) and Thomas’s own account (I followed someone in). And why did she trust Thomas, who she didn’t really know, after how Leo lied to her. It was stated more than once how Alice and Leo jumped into a relationship without knowing each other well enough, yet she was ready to go all in with someone else she barely knew? I did like this book better than the last one by Paris (the hugely unlikable couple whose daughter died in an airliner crash); perhaps it’s because even though Alice was made questionable decisions, she was still relatively likeable in her naivete and I rooted for her to get out of her situation and move on. The middle got a little repetitive with Alice suspecting everyone and with similar thoughts going through her head as she shifted to a new suspect, but I still moved through pretty quickly and it was a decent escape.
