Wow, what a fun read! I kind of knew where it was going, but it was a fun way to get to the end and find out I was right. And, left it open ended enough to leave me to continue to ponder the ending.
This was an amazing retelling, very unique and dark. Its supposes a Cinderella retelling, but can work as an original tale,
Once upon a time Ella has a visit from her fairy godmother, but this is not a fairy, it's a demon, and can great 7 wishes to Ella, in exchange for her soul. She has a hard life, after Mrs Pembroke (her benefactor) dies, goes from being a lady to become a servant, lives in constant fear and knows that she deserves better.
When the fairy godmother offers to grant her 7 wishes, Ella doesn't hesitate to close the deal, she swears not to use the last one and to use the others properly, it. What she did not know is that each wish has a price, one higher than what she would like to pay.
She is an intelligent, ambitious and also noble woman, she not only wants a better life for herself, but also for her friends, but some of her desires can be selfish and that will cause her problems. She will create a domino effect. You can empathize with her, even knowing that she doesn't always make the right decisions, you understand her motives. She is an interesting morally gray character; she can have good intentions but can be selfish too.
This was a great book, very creepy, nice mix between gothic historicals with fantasy. Its set in the Victorian era, woman don't have power, specially woman of the low class, Ella used the resources she had (in her case wishes) to aspire to something better, although it did not always go as she expected, she took her opportunities and dreams for something better.
I have so many thoughts and feelings for this book...
1. The story in itself is FANTASTIC.
2. The characters are well developed and each character I felt like had their own personality.
3. The plot is perfectly creepy ... I was reading at night and I may or may not have flipped my light on once or twice.
BUT
THAT ENDING!
I have never felt more depressed after an ending before.... I don’t always need a happy ending, however, I was literally in shock for a few hours after.
A great book and if you don’t need a happy ending you will really enjoy this book.
Thank you to Netgalley for this arc ebook! I love a retelling, especially when it is a little dark! This book delivered on both things and was a retelling of Cinderella.
Thank you so much for granting me a copy of this book! Eleanor has a chance to change her life forever when she is granted 7 wishes, but they come with a deadly cost. Wow, I was hooked from the very beginning and loved the story.
The Shadow in the Glass is a wickedly delightful and unique retelling of Cinderella that I couldn't put down! It is beautiful, dark, and engaging. This is a phenomenal debut from a promising new author. I look forward to reading more of their work.
*Thank you to Harper360, JJA Harwood and Netgalley for providing me with an E-ARC of "The Shadow in the Glass." In exchange for an honest review. * This was interesting. Definitely an adult fairytale, but one with a relatable heroine. Ella is relatable and I empathize with her.
I loved this book so much! It was the first book I have read by this author and I can't wait to read more! The characters and their story stick with you long after you finish the book.
Thank you for the opportunity to preview this title. I just wasn't my style and I couldn't get into it. I read about 20% and decided I needed to move on. Best wishes and thanks again.
This was FANTASTIC. A retelling of Cinderella, which I love, but with such a creepy twist - and the ending! Dark! Amazing! I loved every page of this excellent book.
