Description
A deliciously gothic story of wishes and curses – a new dark fairy tale set against a Victorian backdrop full of lace and smoke.
Once upon a time Ella had wished for more than her life as a lowly maid.
Now forced to work hard under the unforgiving, lecherous gaze of the man she once called stepfather, Ella’s only refuge is in the books she reads by candlelight, secreted away in the library she isn’t permitted to enter.
One night, among her beloved books of far-off lands, Ella’s wishes are answered. At the stroke of midnight, a fairy godmother makes her an offer that will change her life: seven wishes, hers to make as she pleases. But each wish comes at a price and Ella must decide whether it’s one she’s willing to pay…
A smouldering, terrifying new spin on Cinderella – perfect for fans of Laura Purcell and Erin Morgenstern.

This was FANTASTIC. A retelling of Cinderella, which I love, but with such a creepy twist - and the ending! Dark! Amazing! I loved every page of this excellent book.
I loved this book so much! It was the first book I have read by this author and I can't wait to read more! The characters and their story stick with you long after you finish the book.
The Shadow in the Glass is a wickedly delightful and unique retelling of Cinderella that I couldn't put down! It is beautiful, dark, and engaging. This is a phenomenal debut from a promising new author. I look forward to reading more of their work.
Thank you so much for granting me a copy of this book! Eleanor has a chance to change her life forever when she is granted 7 wishes, but they come with a deadly cost. Wow, I was hooked from the very beginning and loved the story.
The Shadow in the Glass is a wonderful, dark and incredibly rich mystery/thriller novel, so well built and fast paced that I wasn't able to put it down till I reached the end. I was absolutely captivated by the atmosphere, and the characters.
This novel submerges the reader in a landscape so imaginative and detailed that the information of the world building/plot never feels forced, and is never difficult to understand or picture in one's mind
This is a dark Historical Fiction with its roots in ‘Cinderella’ and a touch of magic. This combination will appeal to older, more mature fans of fairy tales. Readers should read the content warnings before diving into this book, as it is the darkest spin on ‘Cinderella’ I have yet to experience.
I adore retellings with a twist so this book was right up my alley. The twist which I sort of knew was coming from the blurbs was still dark and intense that it took me off guard. I can't wait for the publication of this book!
This book is a unique and dark twisted retelling of Cinderella with a bit of mystery and magic, and I loved every page of it.. I would have no idea that this book is the authors debut novel.. It drew me in from the first page and I flew through it.. I just had to know what was going to happen next with Ella, and how she was going to get what she wanted..
Ella is a wonderful character, you could feel how much she wanted her life to change, and how much she wanted to help the other women she worked with.. and how you should always be careful what you wish for..
I can't wait to see what this author writes next!
I always love fairy tale retellings, especially ones with a twist, and The Shadow in the Glass delivers just such a retelling. Just the right amount of creep gothic elements. And the writing style is beautiful!
I've seen and read so many Cinderella retellings and every single time I've always wished for a dark version. Finally, I have found it. I binge read the majority of this book in one afternoon so a lot is a blur for me but damn it was good. I love that the main character, Eleanor isn't a saint. She tries to be nice but she just isn't a good person and her circumstances certainly don't help her out. It was incredibly entertaining to read about and refreshing. For those who have wanted a Villain! Cinderella story I would 10/10 recommend picking this book up.
This book was dark and magical. I loved every minute of it. It had twists that I never saw coming. I definitely recommended this book to anyone who loves magic!
This was a beautifully done dark fairy tale, I loved the story and going on this journey. The author has a great style of the gothic and the dark. I look forward to reading more from the author.
An atmospheric and exciting Cinderella retelling that’s much darker than the original, which is already quite a dark tale.
The world-building was rich and interesting, with a cast of characters just as dynamic as the world. The author slowly builds the tale until the last 1/4 where readers are treated to an unexpected and welcome twist.
All told, a fantastic debut, and one I’ll certainly revisit again in the future. 4 stars.
I am sorry for the inconvenience but I don’t have the time to read this anymore and have lost interest in the concept. I believe that it would benefit your book more if I did not skim your book and write a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for giving me a free advanced copy of this book to read and review.
I'm a dedicated fan of twisted fairy tales and have read many, some good, some not so good. This one, is excellent. JJA Harwood built the story line loosely along the lines of Cinderella, very loosely. She weaves the characters within their true intentions, they will show both sides of the story, taking care of Eleanor then breaking promises. Her only escape, reading books that would be kept from her new position in the household. Then the fairy godmother.....yep, can't have Cinderella without a faory godmother.....appears but she is not goodness and light. She's not here to save Eleanor, she's her to deal. And that is all I'm telling. But the story gets much, much better.
