My first read from this duo and I'm needing to get my hands on more.
I found the alternating POV to be a good mix. Avery was fascinating with her methods of therapy and investigation. Though she's no longer licensed she still has lots of clients looking to learn her patented steps. And Marissa was someone I wasn't sure what her secrets would be in the end. I loved unraveling the details for both women.
Oh, I loved this book! Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are a winning combo for me. I wanted something fun and breezy, while also offering up twists and turns, and this book fit the bill. If you haven't read this book yet, it's the perfect summer read. I was unsure about the storyline at first (I'm not a huge fan of adultery in books), but I'm really glad I stuck with it, because as the story progressed, all the pieces started to come together. I really thought this story was going in an entirely different direction, and it's not often that I'm surprised, but I was. I also loved seeing how the characters' pasts informed their futures.
I recommend The Golden Couple to anyone who likes a side of sociopath with their thrillers (which I happen to love.)
I wasn't even going to read the latest from Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen because I've felt a little disappointed by their books, but I'm so happy I got the galley for The Golden Couple, because it was by far my favorite of theirs.
I was looking for a psychological storyline that wouldn't creep me out too much, and this checked all my boxes: propulsive plot, smart but untrustworthy characters, and plenty of suspense. The authors have clearly put their time in studying psychology and people's behaviors, and it really came out in this book.
My only complaint would be that there might have been just a few too many distractions/red herrings, but that didn't keep me from going along with the ride. I really enjoyed this one, and now I'm excited to see what they come up with next.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for my advance copy. All opinions are my own.
I absolutely loved this book! I found it hard to put down. I highly recommend reading it! You won’t be disappointed.
I loved this! I loved the multiple POVs and the characters. The therapist turned consultant was a nice addition to the book, and how she fit in was so interesting. I kept wondering what secrets the couple had as well as the periphery characters. There was also a background mystery that had me intrigued. I loved the ending of this, and cannot wait to read the authors’ next book!
The Golden Couple is a fascinating, character driven book that is well written and totally engaging. Even though there were some predictable things that occurred, I could not wait to read the ending.
Avery is quick witted and perceptive therapist with investigator tendencies. She is risky and snarky but determined that she can fix your problems in 10 sessions. Avery also no longer has her license to practice but Marissa Bishop is aware of this when she schedules their session. Marissa and Matthew arrive for session 1 which is the confession session. Marissa spills most of her secrets and so it begins. Matthew is devastated by Marissa's secret but Avery is sure that her program will help fix their marriage. Avery is certainly a rogue therapist and you can't skip a session or be late to a session. There are multiple mysteries occurring. There are a lot of characters throughout the book and very well developed. The writing was intriguing and it was simply a fun thriller to read! Everyone keeps secrets! Can you tell what is a lie and what is the truth? What is each person hiding? You must read it to find out!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review this wonderful book.
Imagine if your marriage counselor set up plans/schemes to facilitate situations for future sessions. Now imagine what happens if those unusual methods actually work to find the real danger in the marriage. Much more dangerous than a cheating spouse. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Everyone has a story they don't want getting out...
I was hooked very early on. I wanted to know what secrets were being hidden by the couple that looked like they had it all and how unorthodox the therapist's methods were. It was a psychological thriller that had me wanting those secrets uncovered.
“‘If my clients know what to expect, my process won’t be as effective. I’ll only tell you this: it always starts with The Confession.’”
As we enter the pages our our story, Marissa and Matthew walk into their first session of couple’s counseling. See, Marissa has something to confess, and Avery Chambers appears to be the perfect therapist to oversee this revelation and to course correct the trajectory of their marriage. But is she really? Let’s just say that describing her methods as unorthodox is a massive understatement. Things get all sorts of hinky from this point forward. It’s insane!
I’m going to be completely honest: By page 22, I was setting this book down so I could walk around and take a few deep breaths. So much happens so quickly, and my gosh, it’s all scandalous! I mean, the term “guilty pleasure” was invented for this very book. I did, I received so much pleasure from the madness in this book that I really did feel guilty. But then, I got over it and kept reading.
I promise you that you will be sucked in from the first page, and I promise you that you will not even want to move to blink your eyes until this whole delicious and salacious story is told to its completion.
Read this book, people, READ IT! You, too, need to be as speechless and as dumbstruck as I am right this minute. Wow! 5 dysfunctional stars for this shocker of a thriller!
I want to thank St Martin's Press, NetGalley & Greer Hendricks for this ARC.
Great thriller that was very deceptive .... don't be fooled by the tiles! And dont trust anybody!
It was very slow paced, but still kept me turning the Pages....

Thank you to St Martin's Press and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Marissa and Mathew Bishop seem to be the perfect couple, The Golden Couple, but appearances can sometimes hide the truth. The Bishops have a great life, at least from the outside looking in, but their relationship had it's start amid tragic events and will soon implode after secrets come to light.
Marissa enrolls the couple in therapy with the intention of coming clean to her husband about her secrets hoping that a therapist can put them on the road to healing, Avery, the therapist Marissa has chosen, has recently lost her license due to unconventional treatment plans but is passionate about the results of this path for her clients.
The therapy sessions begin to uncover more than just the secret Marissa wanted to reveal to her husband.
The story unwinds with many twists and turns, some you see coming and others that will leave you gasping in shock.
Great summer read!
Thriller that takes the reader on wild, twisty ride through the inner depths of the marriage between Marissa and Matthew Bishop. Marissa's infidelity leads her to a counselor and the secrets keep tumbling out. Very good read that kept me guessing all the way to the end.
What I loved most about The Golden Couple is the way all the interconnected stories weave in and out so well and twist into the concluding surprises that had me a little stunned!
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press and authors Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen for this digital review copy for me to read and enjoy. As always, my reviews are voluntary and my opinions are my own.
I have read every book by this dynamic author duo, however The Golden Couple just didn’t work for me like their previous novels. Sure I can love a story with unlikeable characters, but this tale of slow suspense couldn’t make up for the loathing I had for the story as a whole right up to the predictable ending. I still look forward to what Hendricks & Pekkanen write next.
These authors continue to write books that keep me coming back. I liked the premise of this plot and felt it was a strong read. Although it was my least favorite book of theirs so far, I still enjoyed it and will continue to read books from them!
Another amazing thriller by Hendrick/Pekkanen! Loved the plot of this story, and all of the twists and turns that kept me guessing all the way. I have LOVED every book by this author pair and this one was no different. Kept me turning the pages until the very end. Could not put it down.
I have an unpopular opinion of this book, I did not love it! I almost did not finish it. Maybe that's because I was given an ARC audio and it stops, and I have to restart. Maybe I missed something, but I just didn't love it.
When you see that writing duo Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen have a new suspense novel out, you know that it is going to be a book that everyone who is a fan of the genre will be reading & talking about. This is the fourth time the authors have teamed up to write a compelling domestic thriller, so if you are new to their novels, you have a backlist of impressively twisty titles to enjoy after you finish their latest!
The Golden Couple is about an affluent husband and wife with an enviable relationship who begin to experience cracks in their life's perfect veneer when the wife, Marissa, cheats on husband Matthew. Determined to put their relationship back on course, they hire a therapist who is known for her unconventional methods. Avery doesn't just get to know you in an office setting ... she takes her practice beyond the four walls to discover what you're really hiding. What will she find when she looks into Marissa & Matthew's past? Is all that glitters truly gold?
Once again, Hendricks and Pekkanen have crafted a gripping suspense thriller, which will have you suspicious of every single character on its pages. In fact, trust no one & sleep with one eye open is a good piece of advice when reading a Hendricks and Pekkanen novel because their books are filled with deliciously despicable characters & nothing ever is as it seems. Multi-layered & absorbing, The Golden Couple highlights the dark side of domestic relationships & shows how dangerous things can become when you play with fire.
With that being said, I did find The Golden Couple to be one of Hendricks & Pekkanen's weaker novels, although it was certainly still entertaining. While I enjoyed the twists, they weren't shocking, and almost every character we were introduced to served some purpose, making this book a bit less suspenseful than it could have been otherwise.
Recommended to fans of Liv Constantine.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book! I enjoyed this one so much and thought it was really nicely written with the right amount of thrill. I could not put it down! Cannot wait to read their next one!
The Golden Couple is an engrossing thriller from everyone's favorite author duo Hendricks and Pekkanen. Told in multiple POVs, we get the story of what seems like a "golden couple" from the outside. They have issues, though, that lead them to therapist Avery who lost her professional license, so she has an unorthodox way about things. We think we know what brought wealthy Marissa and Matthew to Avery, but we find that there are more secrets buried beneath the surface. Highly recommended!
"He seems to be dead, but he has tricked me before."
I was excited to read this but it was so very meh that I actually wasn't sure it was worth finishing. (I did make it through to the end though) The characters were all pretty despicable and unrelatable (who would actually act like that?) and the subplot seemed far-fetched and convoluted. I did listen to this one on audio so maybe it would have worked better if I had read it? Either way, this was a let down for me .
Book Rating: 4.25/5
Audiobook Rating: 5/5
I have had the pleasure of reading quite a few author duos at this point, but none of them hit me quite the way Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen do. The Golden Couple is a tense read and provided me with more than one jaw-dropping twist which I LOVED. This pair's writing is so seamless that I never feel like I am reading a book by 2 authors because that's how talented they are, which is especially impressive considering they wrote this during the pandemic. I loved that the viewpoints switched between both Marissa and Avery, and even though most readers won't find a likable character, I actually really liked Avery. Sure, her methods are a bit unorthodox, but boy do they work!
Also, it really doesn't get any better than the audiobook! Narrated by Karissa Vacker & Marin Ireland, they really made Marissa and Avery feel like real people instead of just characters, and they each voiced their parts perfectly. I had such a hard time putting The Golden Couple down, and if time had allowed I would, and could, have finished it in one sitting. Each chapter is short and punchy making it feel like you are flying through the book, and the end, well, it was shocking and mind-blowing. I am actually still thinking about it over 2 months later, and I know there is a reread of this book in my future.
Thank you to the publishers for my advanced listening and reader copies of this book. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
