Once again, another great read from this amazing writing duo! Grabbed my interest right from the star. Just when I thought I had it figured out, another twist would happen which kept me rapt right until the very end
SO good. A fun, addictive thriller. One of their better books IMO. I flew through this & totally recommend.
The Bishops are known as the “golden couple”, but they seek out counseling from a former therapist with unconventional methods because, as we know no marriage is actually that perfect.
I enjoyed the story overall and where it ended up, but I felt that the actual journey to get there wasn’t quite what I wanted it to be. This was told with alternating perspectives between Marissa, the wife, and Avery, their former therapist. Though a couple revelations happened because something was seen through someone else’s eyes, this is the part where I felt like I wanted a bit more. A big deal was made about Avery’s unconventional methods, but aside from inserting herself into the Bishops’ lives (which is definitely unconventional), nothing else was really that out there. Maybe that’s enough, but I guess I was expecting more after the buildup.
I think because I like how this turned out in the end, it made the rest of the book more complicated for me. I was left with unresolved questions and wanted a little more backstory, but I didn’t know I wanted that until the end.
It was an engaging book and I will definitely read more by these authors.
I would like to thank NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, and Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Avery is an unlicensed therapist still treating people. After meeting a new couple to start sessions things go sideways. Infidelity leads to so many secrets. I don't think I'd ever have a therapist like Avery. I liked Marissa and Matthew, the couple. This book immediately caught my nosiness and I was hooked. The ending was so unexpected. This is my first book by this author and I loved it. I can't wait to try another of they're books.
I tend to shy away from thrillers because they all began to sound the same.
Enter Greer and Sarah- again another mind-blowing, twisty and surprising hit with The Golden Couple. The characters were all so brilliantly created that you could visually see them in your head as you read. And when you think you know where the story is going.....it goes another way...time and time again!! It's tough to put down so don't make any plans once you begin reading! Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Marissa and Mathew Bishop are a DC/Maryland "Golden Couple" They are beautiful people, popular, and successful in their individual careers and have the perfect marriage, or do they? When Marissa is unfaithful to Mathew, she knows their marriage is in trouble. She hires the infamous couple's counselor, Avery Chambers, hoping that her unconventional approach is going to salvage her marriage. Avery was a therapist who lost her licence for some questionable practices, but a counselor does not need to be licensed. She claims that she can help you resolve your problems with just ten sessions. She is also very selective in who she chooses to treat. Marissa and Mathew have an 8 year old child and Marissa is the main caregiver as Mathew works so many hours. Can Avery help them save their marriage?
This was a story that took me some time to get into, as the first part of the story sets it all up and is a bit slow, but stick with this one. There are also several secondary characters that play important roles in the story. The story is told from the POV of Avery the therapist and Marissa, the unfaithful wife. As I read this book, I wasn't sure who to believe. There were secrets, spying on each other, phonecalls and more that played a role, but you had to figure out what. Hendricks and Pekkanen took this reader on a wild ride as the true natures of these multi-faceted characters are revealed. Things happen that kept me trying to guess what was going to happen next? There was also a secondary storyline where Avery was a whistle blower and someone was stalking her. As tidbits were revealed, I was sure I had it all figured out, but wow, was I wrong. Secrets, unreliable narrators, lies and tension made this a domestic thriller that I enjoyed. This is one of those popcorn books that you just need to sit back, go with it and enjoy the reading experience.
I am a huge fan of this duo and their build-up of suspense is one of a kind. I am a huge fan of the multiple narrators that Hendricks and Pekkanen are known to do, and it adds the perfect thrilling chill when we can’t quite decipher who is the reliable one. Loved this book and can’t wait to read more by them

“The Golden Couple” is only a superficial allusion, clouded by secrets and deceit. Marissa and Mathew Bishop appear to have it all: a seemingly perfect life with life in the suburbs and highly successful financial standing and a much-loved son. Both husband and wife are very attractive.
It all comes crashing down with a single act of infidelity by Marissa.
In an effort to save her marriage, family and “perfect” family she convinces Matthew to seek therapy with a very unconventional, but renowned therapist, Avery Chambers. Avery would not take you on as clients, unless she felt she could help with her unique ten session therapy.
Avery has an extremely hands on approach, that not only involves office therapy sessions, but she frequently inserts herself into the field, to investigate material uncovered in the sessions; judging their authenticity and motivation. Her field work rivals the best of all fiction’s female amateur detectives—move over Miss Marple and Jessica Fletcher. Lies and deceit come tumbling down. All of the involved characters are deliciously laid out in a multi-layered web, confounded by secrets that will gradually unfold, amongst a plethora of red herrings. No one apparently is who we originally thought.
Hendricks and Pekkanen seamlessly craft a complex and twisted narrative that delves into the minds and actions of all involved, while slowly ratcheting up tension and intrigue, and culminating an unexpected explosive denouement. The reader is immersed in an intricate plot in this tense and addictive psychological thriller. Avery Chamber’s first-person narrative is expertly alternated with those of Marissa, encouraging the “hooked” reader into rapid page-turning to uncover the true motivations and secrets. There is a sinister element that binds the secrets and deceit together. Who really is trustworthy? Jump on board to this emotional roller coaster ride and explore the human psyche and diversity of relationships.
I personally switched back and forth between reading the book and listening to the audiobook. Marin Ireland and Karissa Vacker provided superb narration, their voices and inflections brought the multiple characters to life in the “theater” of my mind.
Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Publishers for providing an Uncorrected Proof and Audio Recording in exchange for an honest review. Just another excellent novel in a string of collaborations between Hendricks and Pekkanen, who possess amazing synchronicity.
If THE GOLDEN COUPLE, the latest by writing duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, is not already on your TBR, you need to grab it and sit down with it as soon as possible! I love how it kept me off balance with its twists and turns. Then there was the ending that I didn’t see coming. Wow!
Make sure you have plenty of time to read when you pick it up, you’ll be hooked from the first page!
Thanks to the publisher for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of the book. All opinions are my own and freely given.

I really enjoy this writing duo. They are able to piece together a story that just gives you the smallest of clues along the way to keep you guessing. The "Golden" couple is not what I expected and I'm all in for that.
The Bishops are "the golden couple" who have started seeing an therapist, Avery Chambers, after the wife admits to cheating on her husband. Avery's lost her license, so she's not technically a therapist, but rather an unconventional life coach (aka she bosses around and basically stalks her patients). Immediately after finishing this book, I recommended it to my therapist - I can't wait to hear what she thinks about Avery's "unorthodox" methods. There are lots of red herrings in this book, and you're never quite sure which person to be suspicious of. Every character is involved in some kinda mess, so we're kept guessing as to the truth behind all the drama. I've really enjoyed all of the books I've read by this author duo, and the Golden Couple is another fun page turner.
I look forward to Hendricks/Pekkanen's newest thriller each year! This one did not disappoint, All the trademark twists and turns that make me want to devour it in one sitting!
I have enjoyed each of the books from these two authors. They always have such fun twists and turns and leave you guessing until the end. Highly recommend for a thrilling time!
I received an ARC for my honest review. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher.
Easily one of the best thrillers I’ve read in a while! I’ll be adding a copy of this to my shelf on my next BOTM order! Thank you
Does gold tarnish?...
Marissa and Matthew are the couple in question. After a one time tryst and getting a recommendation to see a therapist, Marissa takes Matthew to see Avery, a nontraditional counselor with her own way of doing things. Promising success after just ten meetings of her very specific methods, Avery is sure she can help save the couples marriage. After losing her legal license to practice, Avery has changed her title and her approach to treating her clients. Her unorthodox, intruding and stalking ways give her more insight into her patients lives that she could never get by just in-person meetings. One of her demands is complete honesty from her clients but this couple is keeping secrets. Avery is so enamored by them though she stays on, committed to getting to the bottom of their relationship troubles to help them stay together. Avery has another problem though, there are people after her because of a whistle blowing indecent involving a powerful pharmaceutical company. She's protecting the source who gave her the information she reported but the company will stop at nothing to get her to reveal the person's name. Between these two cases, what could possibly go wrong?
This one was a bit of a slow burn to start but after some character development the pace picks up. Just when you think you know what's what and who's who, things are revealed that make you question what you think you know. It's a very clever and convoluted plot. I've really enjoyed this author duo's previous books and this one did not disappoint, it's a worthy addition to their list of work.
.
Thank you to the authors, St Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC to read, review and enjoy with my apologies for the tardy review.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, this author duo gets better and better with each release. I really enjoyed trying to figure out the mystery surrounding Avery, Matthew, Marissa, and Skip while reading this. The plot twist certainly wasn’t anything all that shocking, but I still had a good time with this mystery/thriller.
**Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing an e-arc in exchange for an honest review**
The Golden Couple is about a young couple, Marissa and Matthew. They have recently started seeing a therapist, Avery, known for her controversial methods. Marissa had an affair and wants to confess to Matthew with the help of a therapist. At the first visit Marissa confessed to a shocked Matthew. He reluctantly agrees to start therapy in hopes of saving their marriage. Avery lets them know they must do exactly as she says and not to let others know she is treating them.
Marissa and Matthew appear to be "The Golden Couple" but their marriage holds lots of secrets and lies. Avery is just as complicated. She has lost her professional license as a therapist and has other issues of her own going on.
I love the way this book is structured. The chapters alternate between Marissa in 3rd person and Avery in 1st person. Because of this, Avery feels like the main character. You aren't sure how reliable either character is in the stories they tell. This was a very fast paced read. I always love books by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen and this one is no exception! Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Very good thriller that kept me guessing up until the end. This writing duo did it again! It was interesting how all the characters were connected and you still couldn’t figure out why certain characters were acting like they do.
Secret and lies... Oh my!
I have enjoyed many books from the talented duo, Hendricks and Pekkanen, and they never fail to produce a twisty tale. The Golden Couple can be added to that list!
Enter Avery Chambers, former therapist turned consultant due to previous not so ethical treatment plans. While her style is not the norm, she claims she can resolve relationship problems within 10 meetings. Golden Couple, Marissa and Matthew become newest patients when Marissa reveals she's had an affair, yet wants to keep her marriage intact.
This book contains dual story lines. We learn about Avery, her backstory including past and present clients along with her thought processes for resolution of their problems. And Marissa, whose secrets threaten the perfect family as seen from the outside. The alternating viewpoints let you into the thoughts and behaviors of both women.
Who's truth is the truth? That's what this book boils down to. What's real and who can you trust? Suspicion, lies, and intrigue abound. This is a quick and most enjoyable listen. With well developed characters, it's a must-read for mystery/thriller fans.
Many thanks to Netgalley, the authors and MacMillan Audio for the opportunity to enjoy a juicy, twisty, original thriller. (I am copying my review here for the book version even though I listened to it on audio. I just want others to know it's so enjoyable)
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen always take you a twisty turny ride and THE GOLDEN COUPLE is just that. All the characters are deliciously flawed and are not exactly who they portray themselves to be. Everyone has a past that haunts them and colors how they act in the present. I flew through this book. Hendricks and Pekkanen are reliably great!
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of the novel for review.
