I began my reading relationship with Hendricks and Pekkanen with The Wife Between Us. The twists in that book were ones that made me yell out loud in shock. Ever since then, I've been seeking that same thrill, but it just hasn't been delivered in their last few novels.
The Golden Couple was full of promise: the perfect couple, seeking help with their marriage after infidelity. A rogue therapist who's poised to help them with her cutting-edge technique. The mood was quite ominous throughout, and there were many points where I read a character's dialogue and wondered if it meant more than what appeared at the surface. It felt tense, suspicious. I was waiting for an ending I never saw coming.
Unfortunately it was the ending we all saw coming.
The twist was not well-hidden, and the authors laid out breadcrumbs to the conclusion. I don't think anyone who has read their other books would have been fooled.
Maybe next time?
Thanks to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for an early copy to review.
The Golden Couple by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen is an outstanding read. I assumed this would be psychological fiction but it soon became an edge-of-your-seat thriller. Marissa and Matthew, the titular golden couple, begin marriage counseling with therapist Avery, who has an unusual practice. At their first appointment, Marissa reveals that she has been unfaithful, if only one time. From this point on the reader will be shocked and surprised at every turn. You will be astounded as you get deeper and deeper into this story. The authors have written a superior thriller. The characters are unforgettable and this mystery has an original and tense plot. The reader finds themselves holding their breath as the pages are turned. Hendricks and Pekkanen never disappoint and I look forward to their next book. If you enjoy a mystery that takes you on an emotional roller coaster, The Golden Couple is for you. Highly recommended. Thank you to St. Martin’s Press, NetGalley and the authors for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
So this is the fourth novel that I’ve read by this dynamic duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen and this one one did not disappoint.
We start off getting to know the unconventional (and unlicensed) therapist Avery Chambers, and her most recent clients Marissa and Matthew Bishop. Marissa and Matthew are trying to keep their marriage together despite recent revelations that seek to strengthen the odds against them.
One of the things I like best about this book is the depth of the characters. This book goes back and forth between Avery and Marissa’s point of views so we learn a lot about each of them and what shapes and impacts their lives. We learn about Avery's unconventional 10 session framework now that she is a consultant (Admittedly, this somewhat annoyed me because who the heck would go to someone who recently lost their license and is now a consultant. I would avoid them at all costs!!), we dive into her love life, her volunteer activity at the local animal shelter, and of course her sleuthing, which is completely unorthodox and again, I question is she a consultant or a PI? One thing is for sure, she is really invested in helping her clients!
We also get to dive deep into Marissa’s life, her marriage, we learn about Marissa and Matthew’s son Bennett and the extended family dynamic between Matthew and his father, which shapes how Matthew approaches being a father to his own son. We are also introduced to some other characters like Marissa’s assistant and some exes, etc. When a book makes me feel emotions like anger, annoyance, happiness, etc., towards or in regard to the characters, I know I am invested!
There were some twists and turns that kept me interested throughout the entire book and it will keep you guessing and trying to uncover the secrets and mysteries along the way. A couple of times I did go back and forth on who was good vs evil. No huge surprises for me but I love a good thriller that draws me in and this one did just that.
Thank you St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book. I recommend it for sure. It would make a great movie too!
A quick, fun read, though I cannot name one likeable nor relatable character. Kept me entertained and curious, though I did figure out most of the big reveal.
This was my first read from the author duo, but it won’t be my last. The story was well-paced and just dark enough to keep me wanting more.
3.5 stars rounded up
Thank you to Netgalley and St Martin’s Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A strong 4 stars! This was a great suspenseful and thrilling read! Although the page count of my copy seemed a bit intimidating, I was instantly intrigued by the storyline and was able to quickly read through the novel.
I believe I’ve read (and enjoyed) all of the novels by Hendricks/Pekkanen and this one did not disappoint. I would definitely recommend this satisfying story if you want to pick up a thriller/suspense read to read over the course of a weekend!
Big thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC!
The Golden Couple is a must-read thriller of the year. All the twists and turns kept me on edge all the way until the end. What a thrilling ride! Amazing job by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkannen. Will definitely keep an eye out for their other collaborations.
This book had me hooked from the start. I kept trying to figure out which character might be more involved then others in the couple’s relationship. I found myself rooting for them throughout the book but also had a sense of impending doom. I was caught off guard by the ending in a good way.
I'm already a huge Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen fan - and this one totally sealed the deal for me!! I love a book that snatches my attention from jump street and then takes me on all of the ups and downs of the saga. While some characters were easier to love than others - I found that I totally misplaced some of my "loyalties" and got a punch in the mouth with the ending that was served up! Yep - Didn't see that one coming lol Not sure if I'm just gullible (could be) trusting (not likely because I generally believe the worst of people lol) or maybe the book was just told in a way that steered my thoughts the way the authors wanted them to go - which is exactly what makes a "good" book - a FABULOUS book. I absolutely can't wait to see what's next~
I'm offering this HONEST review of The Gold Couple by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, courtesy of Netgalley and St Martin's Press in exchange for a digital advanced readers copy of this amazing book!
The way I rate thrillers lately is based on how many times I roll my eyes while reading or listening. I am happy to say I didn't roll my eyes once while listening to The Golden Couple! This author duo has been hit or miss for me and this book skyrocketed them into the win category!
I binged this book because I couldn't get enough. I needed to know what was happening and how it all unfolded. I adored the alternating POV's to keep us clear on both sides of the story, and even still I couldn't figure out what was coming next. I loved how there were a few side stories that all wrapped together nicely at the end of the book. The end was excellent - it finished up like a present wrapped with a tiny little bow after a bit of a mind blowing finale.
Thanks to Netgalley and Libro.Fm for my advance copy of this one!
Avery is a strong and unpredictable character. She is a therapist who is practicing after losing her license when a married couple enters her office with one being unfaithful and wanting to work with the other to resolve the issue. This becomes more then she bargained for as the entire world shifts and the couple is not only in danger of failure but also in danger of their lives.
This was just okay for me. I've enjoyed Hendricks/Pekkanen books in the past, but this one seemed to be more of the typical suspense/thriller that was more popular around 5-10 years ago. I will say, subjectively, I'm starting to enjoy more non-domestic thrillers, because I feel like we've been so saturated with them (like the blurbs say, it's similar to Gone Girl/Girl on the Train) that they don't feel as new and exciting. However, I do like the authors' writing styles and I do think I'd pick up another book by them, if they start to branch out a little more plot-wise.
4 stars! The narration is 5 stars! The Golden Couple tells the story of a marriage falling apart. It is told by two narrators, the therapist, Avery, and the wife, Melissa, who is trying to save her marriage. The chapters alternate between Avery and Melissa. Matthew is the golden husband who was cheated on by his golden wife with an, oh wait, I can't tell you that. It might be a spoiler. Matthew and Melissa met in high school. They have always been together and have a young son. Is Matthew without blame or innocent? You will wonder that. What about Tina, the girl who was murdered when they were all in high school? Tina who was a bestie of Melissa's. What happened that night in the woods? Who killed Tina?
There is more to the story than meets the eye. Who is the bad guy here? You will second guess everyone. Avery is pretty scary with her unconventional ways. I didn't trust her from the beginning. I didn't like any of the characters but it was a good thriller.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an audiobook to listen to for review. I highly recommend it. I have enjoyed all of the other books by these authors and was very excited to get the opportunity to be an early reader for this one.
Marissa and Matthew Bishop are "the golden couple" - the seemingly perfect couple with the perfect marriage. Appearances can be deceiving, though. Marissa has been unfaithful to her husband. She deeply regrets her actions and will do anything to keep her family together. Marissa decides to enlist the help of Avery Chambers, a controversial therapist who utilizes unconventional methods to help her clients. Will Avery be able to help the Bishops save their marriage?
I love a story where things aren't quite as they seem on the surface. The idea of a controversial therapist who lost her license, but is still practicing therapy was a cool concept to me. To say that Avery gets seriously involved with her clients is an understatement. The fact that Avery did in-depth research on her clients was a bit disturbing, but her methods are over-the-top and people generally aren't 100% honest in therapy sessions. This was a quick read with short chapters that alternated between Marissa and Avery. Great story with a great ending! I didn't want to put it down.
4.5⭐️
Holy jeepers creepers, the dream team has done it again!!!! Wow! Wow! Wow! These two actually blow my mind and I am always surprised by how creative their minds are and the plot lines and twists they are able to come up with.
This story did not disappoint and I honestly don’t even know what I can say about it without giving stuff away lol. As per usual, there is more than one storyline happening at once and they are just filled with things to try to drive your thoughts in one direction or another. WHY DO I ALWAYS FALL FOR THIS?!? Lol
I am so so happy I read this book and it really gave me an alternate view of people and how deceiving they can truly be!
I will say I did find the story to be a bit slow to start, but once you get into it you know why all the information and the pace was present. Worth the wait!!!
Thank you to St Martin’s Press, Sara Pekkanen, Greer Hendricks, and Netgalley for a gifted digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
Omg this book!!! Wow oh wow!! They really outdid it with this one! I mean I couldn’t stop reading and when I had to put it down all I was thinking about were these characters! Definitely a 5 star must read!
Another read full of twists and turns by this best selling duo! Unfortunately/fortunately for me this book came in the middle of a month long illness when I found focusing on books very hard. With that being said, I got to read this book slowly, allowing each twists to take hold and make it easier to digest. I enjoyed the characters and their development, and what they each brought to the story. I love to read stories about therapists and see how they dissect the situations, whether orthodox or not. People show you who they really are….you just need to read the signals correctly.
Thanks to this Ms. Hendricks and Ms. Pekkanen, St Martin’s Press and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone.
What a book! Just what you would expect from these authors and they never disappoint. It is filled with great characters, and twists and turns galore and just when you think you have it figured out, well you don't! Seriously, I could not put this book down. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes domestic suspense. This is as good as it gets!
Marissa and Matthew Bishop seem to have it all. But when Marissa is unfaithful, their marriage is at risk, but Marissa is willing to do what it takes to make her marriage work.
Marissa calls on Avery Chambers, a therapist who lost her professional license to help. From the beginning of their first meeting, Avery knows that Marissa’s infidelity isn’t the only secret between the two couples, and she won’t quit until she uncovers the truth.
This might be my second favorite book by this author duo! I’ve read all four of their books now and The Wife Between us was my favorite, but this one is definitely a close second! I loved how there were two different storylines happening that you knew were going to come together, but didn’t know how until the end. And the ending when Marissa goes to pick up Bennett from school made me so happy.
Wow! Just wow! This book was like a slow burn. The build up happened at a great pace and every time I thought I had the mystery figured out I got blown out of the water. I did not see that ending coming and it was CRAZY!!! I didn’t get really attached to any of the characters other then Avery because I wasn’t sure who to trust. I’m going to keep this review short because I don’t want to risk spoilers.
Thanks to NetGalley & St, Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this amazing novel.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the authors, for an ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen
have done it again!!!
I read "The Anonymous Girl" in 2019 & I loved it & was on the lookout for their next book.
When I discovered "The Golden Couple" was available to review, I requested a copy & I was thrilled when I received one.
"The Golden Couple" didn't disappoint, it was totally insane & I loved it every moment of it.
Twist after twist-nothing & no one was what it or they seemed & everyone was a liar & even the lies held deeper deception than met the eye.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves twists & turns with a side of shocking revelations.
I can't wait to read what they decide to write next.
