I wasn't sure what to make of this book. The characters were so unlikeable and the plot so twisted that I couldn't stop reading. The story felt contrived but did keep me entertained.
Not as good as the previous books. I do feel this duo has had their 15 mins and they need to re assess.
The Golden Couple certainly shines! The novel has well-developed characters along with perfect pacing. The authors create a number of whodunnit leads for the reader to explore. A second story line is also explored throughout the novel. Avery, the therapist the couple chooses to address their marital trauma, must also deal with the fallout of whistleblowing on a big pharma conglomerate. She proceeds to delve beneath the veneer of the golden couple, only to find a worn facade. Can Avery help them salvage the relationship? Are there other dark forces at play? The authors pull out all of the stops to deliver a great read, filled with delicious twists turns, and a grand reveal for the ultimate finish!
While I really enjoyed this entertaining domestic novel, I’m not sure I would’ve necessarily called it a thriller. More like domestic suspense/drama. That small thing aside, Hendricks and Pekkanen are really good at this type of story. Great pacing, complex characters that you really care about, and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. Really enjoyable.
This was a pretty straightforward thriller with a twist I saw miles ahead. Still it was a pretty good book.
It’s a story that keeps you guessing until the very end. All of the characters are complicated and seem to have secrets. There are twists and turns that you don’t see it coming, but you are engrossed throughout the entire story. If you were looking for an intriguing story with complicated characters. This is the book for you.
I'm giving the golden couple 4 stars. A full review of this duos latest book is coming soon. Please stay tuned
I throughly enjoyed this domestic thriller. The characters were interesting and all the twists and turns kept me turning page after page. The only problem I have is that the ending felt a little rushed. It didn’t seem to match the pace of the rest of the book. I still highly enjoyed the story though.
Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve been so invested in a book! After reading House of Earth and Blood, which was quite a snooze, this is exactly what I needed 🙏🏼
The Golden Couple is told in two different points of view. The first is told from Avery’s perspective, and the second from Marissa’s. Avery is a psychologist who lost her license due to a situation that was reported. She keeps working, but under the title of consultant, rather than psychologist. Marissa is a boutique owner who hires Avery as a counselor for her and her husband. She is hiding a secret and needs Avery’s intervention to help take care of the situation.
At first, I did not see how the plot of this book would evolve. However, as a certain mystery arose, I became very intrigued to find out this one secret. I had many theories and wrote them down as I kept reading, but to no avail. I was wrong the whole time, and the revelation hit me straight in the face.
Oh, how I missed Hendricks’ and Pekkanen’s writing! I love these two authors, they are wonderful and always write compelling stories that keep you hooked. And when you least expect it, BOOM, here’s a plot twist you never saw coming! 👹
Although I find the authors’ first two books — The Wife Between Us and An Anonymous Girl — superior to this and You Are Not Alone, this is an amazing read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I definitely needed something like this to get me out of my reading slump and make me yearn to pick up a book.
I am a mood reader and have a physical copy of this. When the mood strikes I will read this and update my review.
Avery Chambers, a therapist who lost her license, has an unorthodox plan for saving marriages. When the Bishops go through infidelity and seek out Avery’s services, they’re in for much more than they bargained for. All they have to do is complete Avery’s ten sessions and their marriage will be saved.
The golden couple is a good book for when you are looking for a palette cleanser between books or series. It was a quick read for me, but kept me engaged enough that I was able to push through without the plot feeling dull at all.
Not my favorite book by Hendricks and Pekkanen, but definitely a unique and interesting story with a lot of unexpected twists.
It's about a couple (Matthew and Marissa) that seek the help of an (unlicensed) therapist with a unique method for marriage counselling. I thought the premise was great, twisty and creepy and everyone with their share of secrets, it just ran on a little long and then wrapped up a little too conveniently.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced e-copy.

You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen was a wild ride. This psychological thriller started slower to build the story with great thrilling plot points and characters that you wanted to cheer on. I love this duo's books.
I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Wealthy Washington couple Marissa and Matthew Bishop appear perfect - until she is unfaithful and they start seeing Avery, a therapist who has lost her license due to her unorthodox methods. All three are set on a collision course because the biggest secrets in the room are still hidden, and it’s no longer simply a marriage that’s in danger.
This was one of those books where you have no idea where it's going. There are so many twists and turns - I can see why it is was so popular. The dynamic between the couple and then the strange methods of the therapist made for a very interesting and page-turning read.
Thank you to the publisher for my review copy.
The Golden Couple by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen is a 2022 St. Martin’s Press publication.
Avery Chambers lost her professional license, but that hasn’t prevented her from doing her job as a therapist. In fact, she has more patients than she can handle, including the well to do Bishop’s- Marissa and Matthew.
The couple is trying to save their marriage after Marissa confesses her infidelity to Matthew. Though the relationship has taken a serious hit, they seem willing to follow Avery’s ten step course- but can they manage Avery’s unconventional style? What if Avery has a few secrets of her own? What about Matthew’s ‘friendship’ with his former girlfriend? Is Marissa telling them everything- or is she continuing to keep a few things to herself… and what if those secrets are putting her in danger?
This story was tamer than I thought it would be, and perhaps the pacing was just a tiny bit slower than it had to be- depending on one’s patience for suspense building. Still, I thought the unhurried reveals helped to keep the reader from fully grasping the direction the plot is headed in-later- rather than sooner-
Because anyone who is a regular reader of PT’s will eventually catch on- though somehow it doesn’t ruin the fun, and there are still a few surprising last-minute pieces of the puzzle that padded the story nicely. There are some nice details, especially at the end, and I ended up liking some of these characters, enough to hope the door ‘left wide open’ might mean we could possibly meet again someday.
Some PT fans might balk at the lack of OTT twists, packed on top of more OTT twists… and that one final OTT cherry on top- but this one was more my speed- and I didn’t feel exhausted by the time I turned the last page. It could have had all that stuff, but then it would have lacked some of the deeper characterization that drew me in, and it would have squashed the atmosphere, hampered the human qualities that made the conclusion feel just right- especially when it came to one young character, and made me feel good about how it all wrapped up- and kept me thinking about some of the details for good while.
Overall, I really liked this one. I felt like there was some maturity in the writing, which was less dependent on theatrical twists. The story is absorbing and has all the important elements I like in a good solid psychological thriller.

Summary:
Avery Chambers is known to “fix” her clients within 10 sessions. Even though Avery has lost her license to practice medicine due to her somewhat unethical and unconventional ways of treating her clients, she still was a coveted therapist. Personally, Avery is struggling with the recent loss of her husband.
Marissa and Matthew Bishop are a beautiful, rich, and powerful couple who are struggling in their marriage. Marissa reached out to Avery for help. The only way she can help them is if they are honest about their relationship, which will be quite a struggle.
Their story unfolds from alternating narrators shifting from Marissa to Avery.
My Thoughts:
I always love the books by Hendricks and Pekkanan! This one definitely lived up to my expectations! Twists and turns and interesting characters all throughout! I was shocked at times and didn’t see that ending coming!
Thanks for Netgalley for the advanced reader’s copy of this awesome thriller!
Sooo good! One of my faves to read! Definitely would recommend picking this one up if you see it in the store!
I always read books from this duo. Not my favorite from their collection of books. This would be an interesting limited series or movie.
