I was underwhelmed. The writting was good which is what I kept coming back for.
The story itself however was slow in the beginning and kind of predictable at near the end.
Loved it!! This was one of the better books on a short list of ones that have really sucked me in lately. I liked the alternating chapters from different character view points. The further I got in, the harder it was to pull away. So many little twists and breadcrumbs that had me trying to figure out what was going on the whole time. Definitely a fun read!
Yet another picture perfect thriller from this writing duo.
MV Rating: 6/10
•Set in DC, the Bishops are the golden couple, now seeing a unique therapist to help save their marriage after a betrayal.
•The therapist has some problems of her own, and she slowly starts to question whether it’s a coincidence that these clients came to her when they did.
• Since it follows a relatively standard thriller timeline, I did feel like I had already figured out a few details early on in the story.
•The tension & twisty situations are so well written - it was moderately difficult to figure out the finale, which I liked.
Thank you so much to Netgalley & St. Martin’s Press for the ARC access!
This is my favorite by this writing duo thus far. There was a part close to the end where I was legitimately stressed TF out in a good way for this type of read.
Thanks to Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was able to read this book ahead of its release through Net Galley. I've been a fan of this writing duo ever since reading The Wife Between Us so I was excited to get to read this one ahead of it's release! Overall I enjoyed the book: I liked Avery as one of the main characters and enjoyed her strong female presence and therapist-gone-rogue profession. Marissa and Matthew were only kind of ho-hum to me, and didn't really exude "perfect couple" vibes throughout any part of the novel (even without Marissa's infidelity present) so the title of the novel seemed a bit off base to me. I was interested to keep reading to find out what would happen next, however the main thing that bugged me was that there were so many scenes in the novel that were supposed to be suspenseful with either Marissa or Avery holding their breath waiting to see if something would happen that never really did. It seemed like the author was trying to do a lot of slow burn/build up suspense which only really culminated at the very end of the book in one quickly wrapped up action scene. I wasn't able to connect all the pieces ahead of the ending but the conclusion also didn't blow me away. Not bad, but not a great read but still an enjoyable one.
I wanted to love this one. It needed up being an ok read for me, one that I would still recommend as it kept me invested due to an intriguing premise.
“The Golden Couple” Mathew and Marissa Bishop seek the professional help of Avery Chambers a therapist, referred by a friend. Despite having lost her licence due to unconventional practices Chambers claim; if she can’t fix you in 10 sessions, she won’t take you on as a client. After accepting to take on the Bishops infidelity problem she soon wonders if she can help them.
Are there too many hidden secrets and lies? … OMG YES!
Alternating POV’s from Marissa to Avery have you questioning the who, what, where and why throughout the entire read. There are quite a few side characters, a couple were important where others felt like unnecessary fillers. There are some things I really liked and others I didn’t but don’t want to give too much away.
Definitely entertaining, a bit slow to pick up but worth the read. I’m excited to read more by the authors.
Thank you to NetGalley and St.-Martins Press for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. It reads like a mix of contemporary fiction and thriller, and I am here for it. It was also quite the page turner. I zipped through it in few days. There were a few small issues I had with the book though which is why I’m giving it 4 stars.
I enjoyed the characters. The point of views jump between Marissa (the wife) and Avery (the “therapist”). I wish Avery had shown a bit more depth and emotion, but I get that as a therapist that’s not really her job. Marissa had more depth. She wasn’t particularly likeable at some moments. She got better at the end though and I actually got some good, heartwarming emotion from her at that point.
In terms of the story, this wasn’t exactly how I expected it. When you pitch a book about therapy, I expect to see the therapy sessions in some detail. The therapy sessions were mostly skimmed over quickly. The therapist has a title for each of the 10 sessions (confessions, devastation revelations, etc) but I was expecting more from them with names like that. When you call a session devastation i expect something devastating to happen, not a skim over.
I had some issues with the writing at certain points which is most of the reason why I docked a star. I found the writing in certain bits to be a little bit clunky, particularly in the first half of the book when some piece of information would be revealed. I thought the transitions into the revelations were a little jarring.
As we switch between Avery and Marissa, the verb tenses switch. This is probably just a me problem, but my brain had trouble jumping around from first person to third person. I totally get why it was done, but my brain just would not accept it. So if you’re like me with verb tense switches, that’s something to note about this book.
The story was a fun roller coaster. There were many twists and turns. I never wanted to put this book down. The book really did a good job of painting the picture of what was going on, which made the atmosphere all the more unnerving (in a good way). There were many details given to the point that I couldn’t help wondering details would end up being meaningful in the end. I will say that I saw the ending coming but I still think it was a good ending. Thrillers can often have disappointing endings but I’m happy with this one.
There were a couple of times that I thought there might have been continuity errors. For example, Avery says in their first session that she didn’t know Marissa and Matthew had a son but then later she says that she knew about their son’s school from the form she asked them to fill. Did she know about the son or not? It’s possible the form came after the first session, but it still took me out of the story for a moment.
Overall, I really liked this book. It’s a solid 4 stars for me.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC for The Golden Couple by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. In exchange I offer my unbiased review.
Every since reading The Wife Between Us, I’ve been a fan of this dynamic duo. The Golden Couple is another satisfying thriller with plenty of twists and psychological discomfort.
Marissa & Matthew appear to all as the “golden couple” but behind their glimmering facade lies some dark secrets. Hoping to fix their relationship Marissa hires unconventional therapist Avery Chambers, who has some secrets of her own.
As the story unravels we begin to discover how deceiving appearances can be.

I am quite honestly in the minority with this one and I love that for the book. Unfortunately, this one isn't for me. I wanted to be more invested than I was, the story never pulled me in from the start. The 'golden' couple were boring and as much I keep trying, a plot where the partner is cheating just ... isn't going to be for me. There is some real hype for the book already and no doubt will gets lots of attention.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press, NetGalley and Greer Hendricks for the review copy.
I was really digging this book.. it’s honestly been a minute since I’ve read a gripping adult psychological thriller. And I liked the character development. But this book, like many of its kind, flopped for me at the end. I just didn’t like the way it was wrapped up.
Another hit from the writing duo who keeps you guessing all the way through! I literally could not put this one down. Very satisfying read with plenty of twists and turns and a few scary surprises throughout.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC!
Very intriguing story, told in chapters that go back and forth between Avery, the former therapist turned counselor, and Marissa, the unfaithful wife. All the characters in here are keeping secrets, and little connections keep popping up. I wasn't sure until the end who was good and who wasn't. Avery's chapters almost take on a private investigator feel, as her special method of counseling sessions includes a pretty deep investigation into her client's lives. The book did a nice job of wrapping up most of the main questions, but there are still a few smaller things I'm wondering about.
4.5 ⭐️ So much happens in this book I felt like I was spinning out of control. I loved the way all these one off situations came together. I had an idea of who was behind it all? But I just couldn't piece it together (just like Avery!) I have not read something by this duo that I haven't liked. They are such amazing writers!! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review
Such a great book...the story totally pulled me in. And I really had no idea what was going to happen...great suspense.
Definitely one to pick up
Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for a early release of this book.
Wow! This dynamic duo of authors strikes again. I love a good Therapist trope, but usually they have so many holes, but since she wasn’t licensed anymore, this one became so fun! Per usual I was HOOKED in the first few pages. I finished in 24 hours and loved every minute. A classic who-dun-it mystery chalked full of family/marital drama, cunning women, and subtle clues. I never guessed quite what was going on and the plot kept me so invested. Easily a 5⭐️ Read.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for a review copy of this book.
This is a quick-paced domestic thriller that was an easy read. However, given what I have heard about this writing duo, I was not particularly wowed at the "final" reveal(s) as I found them predictable and guessed them quite early on in the book. To be honest, I haven't really read anything recently that has had a reveal that was surprising to me (Could this be my own fault for reading and watching too many books and TV shows/movies of this genre? Possibly!). The writing was good but the characters lacked depth as I didn't particularly care or root for either of the main characters (the two POVs from which the book is told).
I read for entertainment and to be distracted from everyday life, so I always prefer books that grab me from the very first page and keep me enthralled until the very last page. Author duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen not only do that, but always surprise me with their plot twists.
Therapist Avery uses unorthodox methods to treat her patients and is open with that fact. When wealthy Marissa Bishop hires her, Avery thinks it will be typical marriage counseling, until Marissa drops the bombshell that she’s been unfaithful to her husband, Matthew. She loves him and wants to save their marriage, but the fact he’s rarely home makes her vulnerable.
Despite Marissa’s admission, Avery suspects there’s something she’s holding back, but while she investigates that, she’s distracted by her own love live (as a recent widow) and threats from a pharmaceutical company against whom she issued a whistleblower complaint. When she learns of an unexpected connection between her and the Bishops, she becomes still more suspicious.
Another fabulous thriller by Hendricks and Pekkanen. #TheGoldenCouple #NetGalley
This was so-so. It wasn’t long, but it wasn’t a fast moving storyline. I think there were too many pieces going on with the plot. And I didn’t like the characters either, especially Marissa.
Overall, this was okay, but not something I would eagerly pick up again or recommend to others.
I received this book free of charge from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Avery Chambers is a maverick therapist who has lost her license to practice due to a questionable act but continues to see hand-picked patients. She's becoming well-known for her unique brand of intensive short-term counseling she swears works.
When Marissa and Matthew Bishop, the eponymous golden couple, walk into Avery's office, Marissa is there to make a confession to her husband that may destroy their marriage. It will be Avery's job to help them put back the pieces, if possible.
Avery digs into their lives like a detective as she tries to figure out the secrets they are still keeping and who all is involved. Maybe their lives are not as 'perfect' as they want people to believe.
Meanwhile Avery has some problems of her own after involving herself in a whistle-blower case. I enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot and the way the authors tie these strands up cleverly in the exciting ending. Nice tension and pacing.
I received an arc of this new suspense thriller via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to them for the opportunity.
I enjoyed this suspenseful story. These are two new authors for me and I can't wait to see what they have next for us. I enjoyed how these two authors created a story that is full of action and where three people lives are set for a collision course. A story that is full of secrets and a story that you won't soon forget. I enjoyed how the characters pulled me into their story from the beginning. They are connectable and will bring out emotions in you throughout the story. They had great growth throughout and made the story easy to read. I also enjoyed how these two author's use of details made the story realistic but also how they brought it to life. This is a great story that I enjoyed reading, so entertaining. I highly recommend this book. You don't want to miss it.
