I loved this book so much. It left you wondering who to trust and what the characters' motivations are. Since finding out this book will be one of the February BOTM picks I've told many of my friends it needs to be one of their selections.
This book has been long-awaited and Hendricks and Pekkanen met and exceeded all of my expectations. Everything they write is worth the read. After cheating on her husband, Marissa seeks out the help of Avery, a woman who used to be a therapist until she lost her license for her controversial ten-session method. Avery wants to save her marriage and her husband seems willing to try, but Avery is used to clients trying to deceive her and there is much more going on than it seems. For the first time, Avery seems to doubt her method and is concerned about whether or not she can fix this couple in only ten sessions. She must dig into their past, while also running from her own problems, to help the golden couple to be more than Instagram posts. As always, I had a lot of ideas about what was going on in The Golden Couple, but Hendricks and Pekkanen tripped me up time and time again until several surprising reveals in the last quarter of the novel. It's a must-read!
Avery was once a licensed therapist but her license has been revoked. She is not one to follow rules however so continues to work as a ‘consultant’. Enter ‘Golden Couple’ clients Matthew and Marissa whose lives are exposed after a confession of infidelity. Avery insists a commitment to a mandatory ten-session approach which includes Confession, Escalation, Revelation, Devastation, Confrontation and Exposure, The Test, Reconciliation and Promises. Hold on for a WILD ride!
I loved the gripping plot and mix of characters including the mysterious Polly who is on the fringes of the story, the surprises and twists. An unputdownable story to the end.
This is a book about Avery, an ex-therapist who has a unique way of helping her clients. She meets with the Bishops to help their marriage and lots of interesting twist and turns ensue. This one really sucked me in. I enjoyed reading it and I didn’t predict the end, which is always great!
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are quite a pair when it comes to writing twisty thrillers. They knocked everyone out of the park with The Wife Between Us, and I’ve read everything since. Some are hits and some, not so much. But they all keep me reading and hooked until the very last page. That was definitely the case with The Golden Couple.
I never know who to trust or what the hell is going on in these books. I don’t know what their writing process is like as two authors writing one book, but I can imagine that each character’s perspective is written by only one of the authors each, and they’re playing off each other so they don’t know what will happen next until it ends. It’s like that game you play at work where each person adds one word at a time to write a sentence collaboratively.
This book really is so twisty though, it could’ve gone so many different ways. You really can’t see it coming until it’s happening. I think that’s what Greer and Sarah do so well with all of their books - really keep you guessing until the very end, because everybody is a suspect.
I did feel that some things felt rushed, especially the end of this story, and I didn’t feel satisfied with how things were wrapped up. Like each little story line had so many different nuances, so there’s so much I felt was left out.
But overall, I was really impressed as I am with most of their other novels.
This one started out really well, Avery can fix you in 10 sessions. The buildup of something was going to happen or what had happened was going good and I was fully engaged. But about 60% in it turned into a soap opera drama and it did not live up to what I thought it could have been.
Not a bad read, but not a great one. If she could have stayed with a better storyline of the mysteries instead of straying to who was doing what with whom I think it could have been better. But other people may truly enjoy it. I did stick with it because I wanted to know “who did it”.
Received an ARC from St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for my unbiased review – This one comes in with 4 stars.
This writing and character development definitely captivated and kept my attention for this intriguing psychological thriller. I loved the alternating chapters between characters it really caught my attention and drew me into the story and love when the storyline finally comes together
Literary duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen deliver another electrifying new novel. Narrators Marin Ireland and Karissa Vacker dazzle as they deliver this twisted domestic thriller. Ireland expertly embodies Avery, a razor-sharp therapist who has lost her license for her unconventional methods and "10-session cure." Vacker's layered, emotionally driven portrayal of Marissa, the mysterious other half of "the Golden Couple," keeps listeners on the edge of their seats. Both narrators shine in this multilayered psychological suspense, edgy down to the last twist.

This book is incredible! It is a delicious psychological suspense with twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end. This is definitely my favorite book this duo has written (and that’s saying a lot since I’ve loved their other books)! The characters are well drawn and so real, and I loved one of them so much, they will forever rank as one of my favorite literary characters. (I can’t tell you who it is though, because I don’t want it ruin it😉). The plot was well-executed and logical, with the perfect blend of chilling trepidation as you weave deeper into the story. Mysteries like this are absolutely *chef’s kiss* and Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are pure writing protection.
I don’t want to say too much more, other than please read this book! The Golden Couple is chilling psychological suspense at its very best.
I can always count on this duo of authors for a page-turner that keeps me up long after my bedtime. I have enjoyed all of their previous books, and The Golden Couple was no exception.
The story follows Avery Chambers, a therapist with unconventional methods. She promises results in ten sessions, but her approach is so controversial she had to give up her licence. Her newest clients, Marisa and Mathew Bishop, are a seemingly perfect couple, but it doesn't take long for cracks beneath the glossy surface to emerge. Marisa's infidelity is just the beginning of the issues this couple needs to work through. Avery, Marisa, and Mathew's lives become intertwined both in and out of therapy in this wonderfully-twisty book. I will continue to read everything this duo writes - their books are always suspenseful and keep me on my toes.
I received an ARC of this book from St. Martins Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for this ARC! I enjoyed The Golden Couple but the twist and ending was predictable. Along the way the author built a lot of suspense and an interesting cast of characters. It was not scary or triggering, which I appreciated. If you like thrillers, this is a pretty good one!
Marissa and Matthew are the Golden Couple—they seem to have it all from outward appearances. They have the big house, good looks, lots of money, prestigious jobs, and an amazing son. But things are not always what they seem. Marissa calls a therapist to sort out her marriage with Matthew after an indiscretion.
Avery, a former therapist who has lost her license, has created her own controversial 10-step method for helping her clients. She knows there is much more beyond the perfect veneer that Marissa and Matthew present when they come for their first session. Avery is struggling with her own issues in her personal life, but she will stop at nothing to help her clients with her unorthodox methods.
Told in alternating chapters between the two female protagonists, Marissa and Avery's worlds tie together in ways that neither of them could have expected. The book contains many twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. I could not put it down and read it all in two sittings. I enjoyed the two strong, intelligent female protagonists that the authors created in Marissa and Avery. I have read all of Hendricks and Pekkanen's collaborations and loved them—this was no exception. I look forward to reading more of their work together. I appreciate the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I had been really looking forward to The Golden Couple by Hendricks/Pekkanen but unfortunately it fell a little flat for me. I struggled getting into the story. The start was really slow and the alternating POV chapters between Avery and Marissa wasn't doing it any favors. Neither character was particularly interesting , likeable or well developed. Additionally there was a host of side characters who added very little to the story. The first half was a bit of a slog to get through before the story line picked up, but even then it felt like a been there, done that trope.
Maybe it is just that domestic thrillers have been woefully overdone and it is getting increasingly difficult to come up with fresh ideas. Now granted, the gone rogue couples therapist did sound like it was a new take, but in the end that idea alone didn't save the story as I just didn't care about anyone in the book, wasn't properly invested in the storyline and found it overall less than thrilling. In fact, I think labeling The Golden Couple a mystery or thriller is misleading, as it really is more of a suspense novel. I really am sorry that it didn't click with me, and a lot of early reviewers seem to have a very different opinion, so maybe it's just me. Maybe I just need a break from domestic anything for a while...
So in conclusion, if domestic suspense is your thing, and you enjoy Hendricks/Pekkanen in general, give it a go and try it for yourself!
This book kept me guessing until the very end and it had me going back and forth before the authors identified what really was going on. I loved Marissa and how relatable her character was. I also love Avery’s confidence no matter the situation. Her desire to figure out Marissa’s and Matthew’s relationship made me want to keep going.
Sometimes the evil that is woven into everything about you is so intricate that it blends into the fabric of your life, and you never see it.
Marissa Bishop wants to fix her marriage. To do so, she must confess infidelity to her husband, Matthew, and he must forgive her. Based upon a recommendation from a friend, they seek the help of Avery Chambers. Avery still uses unconventional methods to treat her clients even though she lost her license to practice. The three of them become intertwined in the cause of saving the Bishop’s marriage. Strange occurrences result in more questions that resolutions and it is difficult to determine who needs to accept responsibility for what.
As the novel progresses, the reader becomes unsure of who is telling any part of the truth at all. The lies and misleading statements compound and send the story in a different direction at every turn. Typical of all novels written by these two authors, it is difficult to figure out the puzzle until it is revealed at the end. The suspense is deep, and the twists are thrilling. The characters are deceptive at every turn. Nobody is complete honest about what they think or do. Even knowing this, they are believable and most likeable. Another great book by two of my favorite authors. The narrators simply enhance the excitement of this story!
I received an ARC and an audiobook from St. Martin Press and Macmillan Audio through NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion or rating of this book. I am voluntarily submitting this review and am under no obligation to do so.
A couple in trouble. Unconventional marriage counseling. What could go wrong?!? This was a good thriller that keeps you guessing!
Let me start off by saying that while I love a good thriller, sometimes I’ve left less than thrilled. I really enjoy character driven novels more than plot driven novels. Often times, characters in thrillers are unlikeable. That is the main difference here. This book had awesome character development and I was actually invested in each of their stories. It was quite a web of deception and I loved every minute of it.
Everybody has secrets. The trick is to figure out what secrets they're hiding, what the mystery is and who is lying. Are you up for the task? If so, this is the domestic thriller for you. I will admit the first half of the book is a tad slow, though still intriguing. The second half I couldn't put the book down. And this book has all the twists and turns, bells and whistles to keep you interested and guessing!!
My thanks to the authors, St. Martin's Press and netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and the Publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for honest feedback.
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are one of my favorite writing duos and they did NOT disappoint with “The Golden Couple”. In fact, this might be my favorite book of theirs.
The Bishops are a semi my perfect couple, or “golden” couple, but their marriage has cracks. Enter Avery, a recently disbarred therapist whose methods are less than traditional. All 3 are keeping secrets from one another but whose secret trumps all?
This book had me gripped from the very beginning. There were so many twists and turns that until the last few chapters I wasn’t even sure who the “bad” person was going to be. Did I figure out a few of the plots ahead of time? Yes, but the book keeps you guessing and the plot moves quickly.
Easily a book you could devour in a day!
This is the story of Marissa and Matthew Bishop - a seemingly perfect couple, who enlist the help of Avery, a therapist, for some marital counselling after Marissa cheats on Matthew. What's fun about this book is that Avery is not your usual therapist. In fact, she has gone fairly rogue. I've never had a therapist go rogue like this in real life, so for me, the premise was interesting.
The book follows Avery and the Bishops through 10 sessions of marital counselling, each session revealing more pieces to the complex puzzle that is a marriage. What is true? What aren't they saying? What the heck is Avery doing now?
This book is one of 2022's most anticipated thrillers for a reason: the characters and storylines have many layers, there are many twists and the authors have inserted just enough red herrings to keep me curious.
Even though many of the twists in the book felt predictable, I liked it. Overall, I had fun reading it and was compelled enough by the story to not want to put it down. I'd rate it a 3.5/5 as a thriller/grip lit type book and recommend it to anyone who likes this genre.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced reader copy of this highly anticipated thriller.
