I wasn't surprised at all that I really liked this one. Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are a great combination of writers and I hope they continue to write together. The book was well-conceived and one that I'll be thinking about for a while.
Avery Chambers must have Red Bull on tap........
Avery, consultant, counselor, and former licensed therapist is quite the little suitcase to unpack. She lost her therapist license due to some "highly creative" approaches to getting supporting info for a patient. What works doesn't always work.
But that was five months ago and Avery just has to change her title in order to see new patients. She boasts that she can turn her patients' lives around in just 10 sessions based on the plug-ins of sensory emotions. She juggles a heavy schedule.
Marissa Bishop wears secrets like Joseph's-Coat-of-Many-Colors. Only the vibrant colors are all hidden in the lining. Marissa contacts Avery and desperately wants to set up counseling for her marriage that is quickly fraying on the edges. Marissa forgets to tell Avery that she's springing her infidelity on her husband, Matthew, during the first session. Matthew is clueless and Avery shifts the focus to cover for the gaff. Avery's Notes: These 10 sessions will be stuffed like sausage links.
Henricks and Pekkanen will take the readers on a wild ride as the true natures of these multi-faceted characters are revealed. Our heads will rotate back and forth as the settings lurch from Avery's home office to the Bishops' home in an upscale neighborhood to Marissa's boutique to the waterfront and to the roadways of the D.C. area. Happenings are gonna happen fast and furious in this one. And as always, whose truth is the truth?
And someone seems to have Avery herself in their crosshairs. Just whom did she tick off?
I received a copy of The Golden Couple through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to St. Martin's Press and to Greer Hendricks and Sara Pekkanen for the opportunity.
3.5 ⭐️
I have always enjoyed books by these two authors, and although this one was a bit slower pace and I as a bit tempted to stop early on, but since I enjoy the authors’ books, I’d I figured I’d keep on reading and I’m glad I did !
✔️ good story with some surprising twists that I didn’t see coming
✔️the authors did a good job with many of the characters in the book and how they wrapped up some of the interconnected relationships
The Golden Couple is suspenseful and intriguing. With alternating character perspectives, there were multiple twists that left me guessing. I really enjoyed the varying storylines and I was never quite sure where the plot was going until the very end.
Another great book from these authors. Talk about a cast of liars! Marissa, Mathew and Avery all have more secrets than you could possibly imagine and the twist at the end certainly caught me out. Looking forward to their next book already.
These authors do it again. I delayed starting this book since I knew I would be traveling and spending lots of time in airports and in planes. Gosh I’m sorry I waited.
The main character, Avery, is equal parts fascinating and repulsive. I don’t want to give anything away but she slowly redeems herself. The husband and wife duo fascinate me. I anticipated one story line in the beginning and although it didn’t go that way - it was so much better.
I enjoyed the twists - not what I would imagine which is the best part of everything these authors do.
Can’t wait to see what they do next.
Not surprising that I loved this book! These authors are sharp. The Golden Couple is smart, entertaining, and so much fun to read. This will surely be another HUGE book for them.
These are 2 of my favorite authors! Everything they touch turns to gold! Pun intended lol. Thank you so much to @StMartinsPress and @Netgalley for the arc to review! Once again they hit it out of the park. Awesome book and should be on everyone's tbr list.
I have read and enjoyed all the books written by this duo, but this is my favorite, which is why I am giving it 5 stars. The story is told from alternating points of view, between the unfaithful wife wishing to repair her marriage, and the counselor trying to help her, using a rather unorthodox 10-step plan. Many people join these two women to tell the story, but the characters are so skillfully drawn that I was able to keep everyone clear in my mind. The plot is deep and involved and intricately crafted. I highly recommend that you know very little about this book before you read it; the less you know, the better. Excellent work! Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for providing an ARC.
A couple in crisis comprised of a cheating wife and a husband with a temper…being counseled by an ex-therapist who lost her license for her “unorthodox” practices. I mean, what could possibly go wrong?
Power thriller writing duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen have done it again with another juicy, twisty, original thriller. There are sketchy suspects, twists, and red herrings aplenty in this story, which features intriguing characters and a plot that is creepy from the beginning. It’s best to know as little about this book as possible going in, and just let the writers guide you through the hairpin twists and turns.
I liked the narration of the audiobook but might have preferred just reading this one instead of listening, because all the clues, twists and mysterious characters take a little mental organizing to keep straight. When the ending came, I wasn’t super shocked, but found it very well-executed, as always with this dynamic duo.
This twisty outing was an entertaining and original take on the “who is cheating with who and how will they be punished?” domestic thriller. The addition of Avery the bizarre marriage “consultant” brings some extra fun to the thrill ride.
I’m fully committed to reading everything by this duo and am happy I had the chance to listen to this one. 4 stars for fun and originality.
Thanks to St. Martin’s, NetGalley, and the authors for the great advance copy.
This is my third book by this author duo and unfortunately it’s probably my least favorite. Thats not to say it’s bad, the story was fine and an easy read, it just never wowed me. I’ve come to expect lots of twists and turns from these authors and while there were tons of red herrings in this book, the twists never really came and the one big one was pretty predictable. I didn’t hate it, but I’m also definitely not planning to encourage others to run out and get
Yet another home run for this writing duo! I have enjoyed every last one of their novels, and this one is no different. It's told from alternating perspectives between a wife who cheated and the psychiatrist who works with the couple. BUT.....neither description truly explains all that is going on with either of these woman. Giving them those titles seems too simplistic, as you will quickly learn as you start reading.
This was a great psychological thriller and one that I thoroughly enjoyed! Sold 4+ stars.
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. The story is told by two people, Avery and Marissa. I normally have no problem with this but in this book it made repetitive conversations. I really found this annoying. The book just kept dragging. There were a few twists but I guess I expected so much more from this duo.
When I see Hendricks and Pekkanen I know I'm in for a ride. These two are one of the best suspense teams in the market today.
The Golden Couple is about just that. A couple that looks perfect from the outside because all of their dark secrets are hidden behind closed doors. In hopes of fixing their marriage before it's too late, the couple seek counsel with a radical therapist that lost her license to due to her methods. But as the couple start to make confessions it seems the web of lies continues to spread. Will the trio be able to fix the broken pieces before their whole lives fall apart?
Exhilarating suspense that will leave you breathlessly turning the pages.
I'm a big fan of suspense by the whip-smart team of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, and THE GOLDEN COUPLE does not disappoint. I was hooked from the beginning by Avery: The therapist who has lost her license and yet still has unshaken confidence in her very unconventional methods. As her "golden couple" clients begin Avery's patented process to save their relationship after an infidelity, the story unfolds from multiple points of view. I was glued to the mystery of which narrators were reliable, and who was holding back. A satisfying, page-turning read. (With thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy for honest review.)
The Golden Couple. That's how people describe Marissa and Matthew, but when they arrive in Avery's office desperate for her to fix their marriage, they are anything but. Avery is a disgraced psychologist gone rogue, forced out of her field due to her unconventional methods. The problem with that is, her methods work! She thinks Marissa and Matthew are prime candidates for her 10 session treatment, but as things progress, it turns out they're hiding more secrets than she thought; and so is she. Things begin to unravel as Avery struggles to keep up with Marissa and Matthew and the world they have drawn her into. Can their marriage be saved? Or will theirs be the case that ends Avery's career...or perhaps more? This novel is twisty, turny, and every time I thought I had it figured out, there was a new twist to reckon with. I enjoyed it so much. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Marten's Press for the ARC.
Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
PUBLICATION DAY: March 8, 2022
SUMMARY:
This is the story of a woman who has made a serious mistake in her marriage, and the therapist who is hoping to help the couple heal their way back to a strong relationship. Marissa is married to the handsome Matthew - lately they have drifted apart, but it’s no excuse for what she did. Avery is a therapist (sort of) who helps people with their problems in somewhat unorthodox ways - will she be able to help this couple before it’s too late? And what other dangers are lurking along the way??
PROS and CONS:
Now this is how you write a psychological thriller! Two narrators - Marissa and Avery - is this a case of an unreliable narrator; one, both or none? These possibilities had me guessing the entire way along. Quick story, great detail and the ending was great. I loved it!!
READ IT?
Yes - I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t enjoy this one!!
5 Stars
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Hendricks and Pekkanen have done it again! Everything these 2 write together is fantastic! Unreliable characters, so many twists and turns. This one will keep you guessing until the very end! Highly recommended!
The Bishops have it all. Or so it seems. Except for the fact that even their 8 year old son can tell how unhappy their marriage is. Until cheating and scandals bring them to Avery Chambers, the once renowned therapist who lost her license due to her questionable techniques.
I loved this book and devoured it so quickly! Highly recommend for fans of suspense. There are so many twists and turns that keep you guessing and rethinking who is good and bad, trustworthy and lying. You won’t regret this one for your next read.
I've been on a thriller kick here lately, and this one did not disappoint!
Avery is an unlicensed therapist who claims she can fix people in just 10 sessions. Marissa and her husband Mathew, aka the golden couple, find themselves going to Avery to help salvage their marriage. Little did they know, they were in for one hell of a ride! Avery’s style of therapy is being all up in your business, and I'm here for it!
The chapters alternated between Avery and Marissa, which provides a nice balance to keep your interest peaked. This book is full of characters carrying tons of secrets. The secondary characters are well developed. If you're in to domestic thrillers, I highly recommend getting your hands on this!
A big thanks to NetGalley & St. Martin's Press for this e-arc in exchange for my honest review!
