Ten sessions. Avery Chambers can fix any problem in just 10 sessions.
Marissa and Matthew seem to have it all. A put together life, a happy marriage… and a whole lot of secrets. When one of them is unfaithful, they seek out Avery for help to fix their marriage and to salvage what they can for the sake of their son, Bennett. They dive head first into Avery’s course and start mending their relationship.
But Avery is also harboring some secrets of her own. She lost her license as a therapist because of some rather controversial practices. Avery has also been dealing with threats from something in her past.
Will Avery be able to help Matthew and Marissa? Will she finally be able to put an end to the threats and put her past behind her?
This might be my favorite book by this author duo. I was very invested from the start, I felt like the twists and shocking points were realistic enough (for the most part) that this felt plausible to real life. I thought for sure I had everything figured out, but I kept second guessing myself. And then it turned out I wasn’t right at all.
I think the characters in this story all had a good side and a bad side, and that made me wonder who the true villain actually was. I enjoyed running through different scenarios in my head trying to piece together the clues.
I did feel like the ending was a little over the top, and honestly, maybe a little incomplete. Everything ended tied up with a bow, but the bow was missing some strings. I had quite a few questions after the book ended.
Overall, I enjoyed this story and I think this will be a popular title in 2022. 4 stars, probably more like 4.5, and I would recommend this to anyone who has read and liked their books in the past.
Pekkanen and Hendricks deliver again - a page-turning thriller that will leave you guessing to the end.
Excellent thriller, I was very invested in the story and there was a lot happening to keep you guessing and putting the pieces together until the end.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC: this is a an enjoyable read--a well crafted thriller with character development. The central protagonist is a therapist who has lost her license for being too involved with clients, yet that involvement allows her to push limits and help solve the central mystery. The book moves quickly. Appearances are deceiving and Avery, a now unlicensed therapist because of her unconventional direct approach, is a plausible sleuth.
I am a huge fan of Greer and Sarah. The first book I had the pleasure of reading was “An Anonymous Girl” and I instantly fell in love with their writing style.
That has not changed. This book was a page turning, fast paced thriller that I found myself chomping at the bits to return to any moment within my day where I could steal away!
The cast of characters has the reader on the edge of their seat, never knowing which way the road will turn with each chapter.
I recommend this read!
Avery is a psychologist that had her license taken away after she used some unorthodox practices while treating a patient. Now Avery uses a 10-session method where she promises to "fix" all your problems. When Marissa and Matthew Bishop come to her for help repairing their marriage, Avery dubs them the 'golden couple' since they appear to have everything. Everyone is keeping secrets, and no one is being entirely truthful. This was definitely a book of unreliable narrators.
There was a lot of suspense in this psychological thriller, and quite a few twists that I didn't see coming. I love this writing duo because the way they tell a story flows so smoothly through the characters they create. Avery and Marissa both have back stories that are interesting, and you find out more about them through their POV.
My favorite sub-characters were Romeo (Avery's rescue pitbull) and Bennett (Marissa and Matthew's son) - they both add so much to this book.
4.5 stars As with any book written by these co- authors it takes about 2/3 of the book to really get pulled in. This book was no different than the rest. Well written, good character development and special thanks to Netgally for the advanced reader copy.
A twisted thriller that keeps you engaged all the way!
Avery, an unconventional therapist meets with clients - Marissa and Matthew - the golden couple over a troubled marriage due to infidelity. Also Avery has her own troubles within her life both personally and professionally. But she is determined to help the couple even though she keeps finding new info that they have been hiding as days go by. There are quite a few twists and turns that keep you guessing as both of them hide a lot of things from Avery. Then, there are also other characters who bring in more confusion. The plot felt multilayered and each new revelation was like peeling another layer after layer.
Only issue was the ending tied up a bit too conveniently with all the subplots coming together which was probably not needed. Also I tend to avoid books based on infidelity, but this was more of a domestic thriller focused so it was fine with me.
Why I did not immediately think, "Wow. This book is going to be twisted." is beyond me. That is clearly Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's type and they do it so well! I was not disappointed.
This story revolves around Marissa and Mathew, aka "The Golden Couple". They are the couple that everyone dreams of being and they just have the reputation of being perfect. However, this is just an illusion, as Marissa has cheated on her husband. Wanting to get this out there so they can move on and save their marriage, they call up Avery Chambers. Avery is an ex-therapist who lost her license because the way she performs therapy is "unconventional".
I don't want to say much more for fear of giving something away, but let's just say that the infidelity is just a small problem compared to the rest. I definitely recommend this book, especially if you enjoyed Hendricks and Pekkanen's former works.
I was very excited to receive an early copy of The Golden Couple. The writing duo of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen has proved that they’re a forced to be reckoned with in terms of writing twisty, bingeable thrillers with their previous works. The Golden Couple was extremely hyped and I went into this book with high expectations. I was let down.
What I liked:
✨This is a fast read.
✨ I thought Avery’s character was cool; a therapist who lost her license but continues to practice? Color me intrigued.
What I didn’t like:
✨ There was TOO MUCH happening in this story. The side plot with Avery’s character felt very unnecessary. The link that tied it all together was silly.
✨This was very predictable, and not in an “I can ignore the predictability because this is a cool spin on an overdone trope” kind of way. When I say predictable, I mean every aspect was so obvious at the onset that it made me not want to finish.
This duo knocks it out of the park again! I love the dual perspectives and the pacing felt just right.
I adore this writing duo! All of their books have been so enjoyable and twisty. As soon as I saw The Golden Couple on Netgalley I requested it immediately. So glad I did, what a ride this was!!
First off, the pacing is PERFECT! Give me ALL the alternating chapters between different characters, it's my fav. The storyline grabbed my attention quickly and I was left questioning how the heck everything was going to come together right until the end ... well done!!
Huge thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for my review ecopy!
The Golden Couple is a captivating and engaging book with many, many layers. As I got closer to the end I had a harder time putting the book down. And boy, was it an ending I would have never predicted!
My only complaint is that there’s a few too many layers. I love how everything came together and finally made sense, but there were big chunks and plot points in the middle that took up a lot of seemingly unnecessary time. Looking back I appreciate the bread-crumbs and hints at the ending, but it really made the middle feel bogged down.
Overall though, this was an incredibly captivating thriller, great read if you need something to lose yourself in. Highly recommend.
Another awesome thriller from the duo of Hendricks and Pekkanen! I have read all of their books and they seem to be getting better and better. There were twists in every direction in this one and I couldn't put it down. I will gladly read anything they write because they do it so well. I loved the multiple POVs and quick chapters to keep the pages going.
Avery Chambers is a therapist and has developed a strategy that will cure her patients problem in ten sessions no matter what their problem is. She is no longer a licensed therapist due to some illegal practices in the past but that doesn't stop her. She is committed to her patients and snarky and absolutely confident that her ten session cure is the best therapy for everyone and every problem.
When her new clients walk in the door she is impressed by the apparent golden couple - they are rich, dressed well and have an aura of confidence. Marissa and Matthew appear to have a happy marriage and a wonderful life. The reason behind their need for therapy is that Marissa feels the need to tell Matthew that she'd slept with another man -- some guy from the gym and it was only once. Matthew is furious and doesn't even want to look at his wife. Why would she do this after over 10 years of a happy marriage? But...is everything the way it seems or are they both hiding secrets from Avery, from each other and from themselves? Avery starts her undercover work to find out more about them and she remains sure that they aren't both telling the truth but can't figure what the truth really is.
This is a tight, well plotted story that will keep you on the edge of your seat while you race to the end to find out the real truth. Once I started it, I didn't want to put it down. Matthew and Marissa are well written as the perfect couple but what made her sleep with another man if she is truly in love with Matthew? Avery is a fantastic kick-ass therapist. Her research methods are different than any other therapist and she is often close to the line of illegal but she gets the job done. I really enjoyed Avery as a character and would love to see her in future books by this amazing duo of writers.
This is my first book by this writing duo and I need to go back and read some of their earlier books. Be sure to start this when you have lots of time to read because you won't want to stop reading until the surprising ending. I highly recommend it.
A man and woman meet their therapist to discuss a troubled marriage. Marissa, the wife, reveals her infidelity to both Avery, the therapist, and her shocked, unsuspecting husband, Matthew. They begin the healing process and it is through their points of view that we witness the process. Each has secrets often leading to lies; each introduces supporting characters who complicate the issues and lead the reader to solve what seems a setup. Hendricks and Pekkanen are masterful storytellers as witnessed in their previous novels. Unfortunately this work did not hold my interest or focus as the others have. Perhaps the attempts at deception were not convincing. There are still the usual surprises so, despite this small inconvenience, I still look forward to their next work.
This book kept me hooked from page one. It is full of predictable twists and turns, but are they really as predictable as they seem? Who is lying and who is telling the truth.
Avery Chambers a therapist who has lost her license to practice starts an unconventional counseling service that guarantees she will fix your problems in 10 sessions.
Marissa wants Avery’s help to deal with her guilt from cheating on her husband Matthew. Sounds simple right? As the story progresses do you root for Marissa or Matthew? Both have secrets. Avery is able to see beyond the lies though.
The ending was a little abrupt as two parallel stories come together.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and want to thank NetGallery for the copy.
This was my first novel by this duo and I really enjoyed it! Right from the beginning, the concept of a maverick therapist working with a seemingly idyllic couple grabbed my interest.
This novel is told from dual POVs and I feel it worked really well. All of the characters are likeable yet you can tell something is off about them and they all have secrets of their own. But it's a question of who can you trust?! The accompanying characters are equally as suspect and I was left guessing a few times over how the entire story was going to play out.
This is a domestic thriller, so if you prefer some suspense without the gore, this one hits the mark for me. The plot moves quickly and was layered enough to keep me intrigued throughout!

All I can say is "WOW". This book will keep you guessing all the way to the end. Just when you think you may have figured out what is going on a new twist sends you spiraling.
A seemingly perfect couple goes to an unorthodox therapist for marriage help. Seems pretty straightforward but it is far from it.
I don't even know what to say other than just read it!
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen have become one of my few "must read" authors. I loved "The Wife Between Us" and "The Anonymous Girl-" unfortunately, "The Golden Couple" was my least favorite book by them.
My biggest issue is that I never felt connected with any of the characters- the story goes between two different perspectives. The story mainly centers around Marissa, who has cheated on her husband and is now dedicated to couple's therapy. The other perspective is Avery, her psychologist, who has had her license taken away and offers a non-conventional approach to resolving Marissa's issues. Both women are not particularly likeable, and their supporting cast isn't much better. Throughout the book, it didn't matter to me what the mystery was because I didn't feel like the story was moving in any particular direction. I kept expecting something to happen.
The conclusion wasn't as surprising/wow-ing as Hendricks and Pekkanen's previous works. The way that everything was resolved/connected made the world very small. I found the story of Marissa and her husband to be concluded well, but Avery's side story connection seemed to come out of nowhere and was very convenient.
I would happily read anything that these ladies write- I know I am in the minority for not enjoying this book, but I still really enjoy the writing style and hope that I'll enjoy their next book more. :) Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for an advanced copy of this book.
