The Golden Couple is about a therapist who can fix anyone's problems within 10 sessions. Her recent clients are the Bishop's-who look to be a golden couple from their outer appearance. I would give this book 3 1/2 stars.
This story is not your typical mystery. There’s no dead body or traditional crime to solve. But that doesn’t make it any less suspenseful.
Having lost her license, Avery Chambers is no longer bound by the regulations imposed on other therapists. She has created a 10 session approach to “fixing” people. It’s unconventional, to say the least. She delves into her clients' lives in a big way. But people sign up to work with her, based on the success stories.
Marissa Bishop has seen the WaPo story about Avery. She signs up herself and her husband, Matthew, after she cheats.
The book has dual storylines. The first is Avery’s and includes her backstory, even detailing previous and other existing clients. The second is Marissa’s and we quickly learn she is still keeping secrets. I often find books with dual storylines are unequal and I’ll care for one more than the other. But not here. I was equally engaged with both women. While Avery initially came across as prickly, her adoption of Romeo put me in her corner.
The book moves at a fast pace and there’s lots going on. In fact, it made me realize how quiet and stable my life is. These two ladies have issues in spades.
I kept finding excuses to read/listen to one more chapter. It’s fun, convoluted entertainment. Not at all believable, but what the H***. I loved that the authors totally caught me off guard. I had no clue how Marissa’s story would play out. I had figured out Avery’s.
The audiobook employs different narrators for the two main characters and both did a fabulous job.
My thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio/St. Martin’s Press for an advance copy of this book.
A therapist gone rogue, a beautiful wealthy couple in need of marital help, a clingy store assistant, complicated relationships and lots of moving parts makes for quite a domestic thriller story.
It goes like this: Avery is a therapist who’s license is revoked due to her violation of protocol. That doesn’t stop her from working without credentials, though.
She remixes her therapy practice to incorporate some private investigation and unheard of methods that will for sure make you reader raise a brow, but seem to work well for her clients.
When a gorgeous couple sweeps into her office seeking her counseling services, Avery begins therapy with them, and quickly realizes that there are many secrets and layers of deceit to uncover.
A spiders web of strange connections and drama just keeps spinning and will have you guessing until a twisty ending is revealed. 🕸
This was more interesting than a lot of the domestic thrillers I have been reading lately. The characters were not very likeable but that was okay for me this time! A nice change of pace from the usual. I recommend!
Hendricks and Pekkanen have delivered another intelligent, twisty thriller. They have yet to disappoint!
Hendricks and Pekkanen are two of the best thriller/suspense writers out there. (I call the suspense genre “husband killing books,” just by the way). I was hooked from the start. As always, expect the unexpected! Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s for the ARC!
Another fantastic book by writing duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen!
This one kept me enthralled from start to finish. Woven with dual points of view from both female main characters, as is their habit to do, this book is engrossing and suspenseful. Part psychological thriller, part detective story, this book is a must read.
The Golden Couple is exactly the kind of psychological suspense that I love. It's engaging, there's plenty of suspense along the way, and the plot twists enough to make it unpredictable, but not enough to fall off the edge of believable. I particularly enjoyed the fact that therapist Avery Chambers made her own therapeutic rules with her novel ten-session approach . She crosses the line from counselor to almost a detective as she attempts to help Marissa and Matthew through their marital issues. Don't make the mistake of looking at The Golden Couple and thinking it's just another in a long stream of infidelity thrillers, because ou're not going to want to miss this one!!
I was lucky enough to have both an early digital copy and an early audio version, and the audio version is impeccably narrated and incredibly easy to binge! Thank you, St. Martin's Press!!
I always enjoy the books written by these two. Great dual perspective, lots of plot twists and side stories. This one was great.
Very much enjoyed this book. I am a huge fan of both of these talented authors so I didn't expect anything less than spectacular writing and they did not disappoint. It had me intrigued until the very last page, which hasn't happened with a book in a very long time!!
This book is not what I expected. All I can say is wow! I really enjoyed this book. There were twists and turns that I was definitely not expecting. I highly recommend reading this book.
I would love to read future books about Avery and her clients! I really enjoyed her character and would to have more of her.
Therapist Avery Chambers has unconventional methods, but her results are undeniable. With their picture perfect marriage on the rocks after an infidelity, Marissa and Mathew Bishop seek out couples therapy with Avery because of her ten-session guarantee. As their paths collide, their lives are changed in unexpected ways.
THE GOLDEN COUPLE is the latest domestic thriller from writing duo Sarah Pekkanen and Greer Hendricks. At times I found the characters to be a bit one-dimensional and difficult to connect with. I enjoyed the twists and ways the past slowly unfolded to reveal the character’s motivations. I’m not sure if this book will be one that sticks with me for years, but chances are, readers aren’t looking for literary staying power here. If you're in the mood for a wild story to toss in your spring break beach bag, this will do just fine.
I enjoyed the superb audiobook narration by Marin Ireland (one of my favorites!) and Karissa Vacker. The story is told from two POVs and I appreciated the distinct narrators for each. Reading THE GOLDEN COUPLE in print or audiobook will make for entertaining poolside reading.

A big thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and Macmillan audio for advanced electronic and audio copies in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I read this duo’s previous book, The Wife Between Us, which I didn’t rate very highly. This book had such rave reviews, so I thought I would give them another try. Unfortunately, the book was a bit better than the previous, but once again I struggled with the plot line and the characters.
The book is told in two perspectives in real-time, that of Avery Chambers and Marissa Bishop. Avery was a therapist who used unconventional methods, and losing her license means she is now a consultant. Avery’s pitch is that if she can’t fix you in 10 sessions, she won’t take you on as a client. Marissa and her husband, Matthew, are having marital troubles. Marissa’s infidelity drives the Bishops to Avery in an attempt to save their marriage. And it seems like Avery will stop at nothing to aid her clients. She’s a stalker, an enforcer, a confidante, a shoulder to cry on and generally just meddles in every aspect of her clients’ lives.
There is a secondary plot line involving harassment and intimidation of Avery which, quite frankly, was more interesting than the Bishops. Unfortunately, the whole plot just kind of floundered along at a slow pace, with quite a few peculiar and unrealistic happenings. It isn’t until the very end when everything is tied together in a neat little package.
As for character development, I think they are well-defined even if not likable. Avery is definitely a strange and freaky therapist which may have made her entertaining if she weren’t otherwise such a disagreeable person. Marissa is a bit of a non-entity. The book centers around the Bishops receiving help from Avery, but the question, “Does she really love her husband, and why?” remained unresolved. My impression was she didn’t want the marriage to end for financial and status reasons versus losing the love of her life.

Hendricks and Pekkanen are absolutely at the top of their game. They've mastered the plot-driven thriller and this one is no exception. Fast paced and compelling, I stayed up all night to find out what happened. It wasn't my favourite of theirs, but it's definitely what you want when you're looking for something you can't put down.
I am so glad I got the chance to read this book early. This author duo is an auto-buy for me, so either way I was going to be reading this book. I think this is the best book they have written so far. I love a good domestic thriller! I like the dual perspective between the wife, Marissa, and the couples counselor, Avery. I’m also a sucker for rich people drama and this one hits all the right marks for me. I highly recommend.
Things I look for in a psychological thriller:
- Can't-put-this-book-down vibe
- Twists I didn't guess
- Tidy endings
- Investment in characters
.
While The Golden Couple isn't groundbreaking or the best thriller I've read by any means, it did tick all the aforementioned criteria and thus, I give this four outta five stars. I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish, and I also like this book more than the previous books penned by this author duo!
.
What I enjoyed most about The Golden Couple was the character Avery, a former therapist who lost her license because of her boundary-pushing methods. She is a strong female character that dubs as a faux-Sherlock, and I really enjoyed reading her methods of deducing the characters of those around her. From start to finish, I was rooting for her, and this connection is what kept the pages turning.
.
For a quick psychological thriller, this one entertains for sure! Thank you to Macmillan audio for this ALC - the audio narration is excellent!
I absolutely love these two authors and their books! This was yet another fantastic book that kept me on the edge of my seat. I thought I knew what would happen and…I was so so wrong. I highly recommend this book!
The Golden Couple by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen
I really like this duo and was super excited to read this book!!
Marissa and Mathew Bishop seem to be the 'Golden Couple', until Marissa cheats! Marissa would like to repair this, will Mathew agree? A friend shares an article on Avery Chambers, a therapist, who lost her license due to controversial methods.
Everyone has secrets!
I enjoyed the book! Although the first half for me lacked a little, I was interested, but didn't completely grab me right away. At about 50% I was hooked! The last half had my attention completely! Twisty and filled with layers of lies!!
Thank you Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanen, St Martin's Press and NetGalley for the advance copy of the book in return for my honest review!
Mystery, every character has an agenda, several viewpoints offered. Chapter heading tells whose head you'll be dipping into (which I liked because sometimes that gets confusing). Plot twists, couple who appears 'golden' but still has secrets. This one kept me guessing for awhile! I liked not knowing what was coming next. If I had to come up with a complaint it's that every single thing was tied up way too neatly at the end. There were so many crazy situations and consequences, the neat bow left me just a little frustrated. I get that I should have been delighted and maybe some of you will feel that way. Life is messy, though. Four stars because it kept me guessing.
4.5 🌟
Avery is a widowed unlicensed therapist who has a unconventional 10 step process she uses with her clients. Each step pushes the individual to dig deep and reveal every last secret they’ve been hiding. Marissa requests Avery’s help discussing an issue with her husband Matthew. During the couples ten step process Marissa and Matthew experience unusual happenings around them. With all the twists and weird behavior of those surrounding the family, you don’t know who the mastermind is behind all the strange occurrences.
This novel baited me from the beginning with mysterious characters and unconventional therapy. It was just a hooker, line and sinker for me! Make “The Golden Couple” one of your March 2022 reads.
