As always Hendricks and Pekkanen write a thrilling book, full of suspense! Avery, Marissa, Matthew and Skip come alive as we weave back and forth through their story, never seeing the twists and turns coming!!
Avery Chambers is a therapist that claims her 10 step program can help anyone, so when Marissa and Matthew Bishop enter her office she feels she can help them. Marissa and Matthew are described as the golden couple because they have everything, until Marissa has a one night stand that could destroy her marriage. They decide to work with Avery and promise to do as she instructs but will it work or will other secrets come out.
I loved this story. It's intensely mesmerizing and captures you from the first page. Each chapter brings to closer to an explosive ending I didn't see coming. A must read for mystery and suspense fans, one of the best books I've read this year.
This is the third story I have read by these authors and this one was just as good as the other two i have read.
I love psychological thrillers because of the twists and turns and the messed upcharacters portrayed and this book is exactly why i do
So many twists and turns. I was trying to figure out these characters the whole time as they all had secrets except for a dog.Speaking of characters they were well developed and the authors brought them too life.
It does start off a bit slow but it grows into more of a suspense as your reading
I would recommend this one for thriller fans as this one is a bit messed up which makes a good thriller.
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this arc for my honest opinion
All thoughts and opinions are my own
If you enjoy a thriller that’s chock full of drama, this one is for you. Avery is a recently unlicensed therapist who still practices her rogue methods as a therapist/private investigator. Her latest clients are Miranda and Matthew, who have come to Avery to help save their marriage after Miranda has confessed to being unfaithful.
This story has a LOT going on. Besides the infidelity, the lies slowly unfold, along with the manipulation and deception. There is a also a stalking situation, the loss of Avery’s husband, a murder from the couple’s past, and an unsavory friend who can’t be shaken.
The Golden Couple is an engrossing psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the end with its several plot twists.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press for the free book.
I was so excited to get an early copy of this book, and it did not disappoint. I have been a fan of these authors since their first book, and I liked where they went with this one. An unconventional ex-therapist, a seemingly perfect married couple, and some mysterious events kept me turning the pages as fast as I could to see where this story would take me. I had so many theories, but I was wrong. So wrong. That just kept me that more engrossed in the story. I spent this book being suspicious of every character - and I love thrillers like that. I honestly didn't know if all the plot points would tie together or where the story was going, but I enjoyed the journey AND the ending.
I eagerly anticipate any new books by these two stellar authors and this one does not disappoint. A married couple, faced with an infidelity, seeks the counsel of a disgraced therapist with unconventional methods. The story alternates between the therapist, Avery, and the wife, Marissa, perspectives. As the story of the infidelity unfolds, Avery leads the couple through her ten step process, each step designed to push the couple further into discomfort in order to confront the issue.
As the couple navigates the therapy sessions, Avery is faced with her own crisis. A client, Finley, has revealed a company secret that could threaten the lives of many. Without hesitation, Avery reports the danger anonymously. But it isn't long before someone is following her. The story banters back and forth between the two perspectives, and the reader is introduced to a mix of new characters, each with a different relationship to either Avery or Marissa.
As a reader, I found myself trying to connect all the characters and decipher who is truthful and who is less than forthcoming. I love books that challenge me to uncover the threads that weave characters together as I try to spot the red herrings. This is that kind of book. And as with their prior books, I was surprised by the ending.
The only criticism I would have about the book is that I didn't believe that Marissa and her husband would let their young son have a relationship with the estranged grandfather, Chris. Letting him go alone on outings with Chris just didn't feel authentic based on what I knew about the couple.
I appreciate being able to read this advance copy through Net Galley and look forward to many more books by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen!
Fantastic story and so many unexpected twists and turns that just when you think you have figured it out you will be shocked by a new direct.
Marriage counseling done in 10 sessions. A picture perfect social media successful marriage is in jeopardy. Can Marissa and Mathew be real and turn this around? What are the secrets that they are keeping from each other?
Stayed up to the wee hours reading this! Really enjoyed and would recommend. Thank you to Netgalley for complimentary copy!
I have read other Greer Hendricks/Sarah Pekkanen books both as solo authors and together and loved them but this one was probably the most suspenseful. A colleague of mine read it in a weekend and urged me to, so I was really happy when I received an ARC. I really enjoyed the storyline- it was believable in the sense that you could see the modern day couple wrapped up in the Instagram worthy life but not really examining the secrets that lurk underneath. I felt like with each character they introduced, I was guessing how they would come in to the picture. I couldn't quite put my finger on how this would wrap up..but I liked both Avery and Marissa because they weren't easy to pin down. I will definitely recommend this to anyone who needs a new page turner.
“Twelve minutes ago, they breezed into my office— glamorous, affluent, enviable. The golden couple. Now the underlying tarnishes they’ve never allowed the public to see are already beginning to show.”
Avery, a therapist who recently lost her license, has publicized her breakthrough ten session plan sure to fix whatever issues you have. The golden couple, Marissa and Matthew Bishop, have come to repair their marriage after Marissa admits to infidelity.
But things are not what they seem and everyone has a secret. Or two.
And the secrets are eerily entangled more than they realize.
Oh also— the Bishops are definitely not seeing Avery by mere coincidence.
The formatting of this book follows Hendricks & Pekkanen’s book, An Anonymous Girl— the main female character has chapters told in third person, the therapist has chapters in first person.
It takes awhile to figure out where they’re going with it. From the beginning I was questioning: Is the therapist shady? Which one of the golden couple is shady? Or are they for real and are innocently caught up in something sinister?
And can we trust the narration? I’ll be honest, ever since I read Gone Girl, I’m assuming I can’t fully believe anything from a first person narrative— talk about trust issues! Thanks a lot Gillian Flynn.
Also similar to An Anonymous Girl, this book is a slow burn. It does drag a bit in the middle and some of it feels repetitive. I didn’t like The Golden Couple as much as the other one. There was so much of it centered around the act of infidelity and the marital therapy whereas the other one had more of a mysterious psychological element to it.
So some of this was a bit boring— 10 sessions is a lot to go through!
As for the mystery— you might figure this one out, but there are enough red herrings that will make you second-guess yourself.
I agree with some other reviewers that Avery’s character seems more like a Nancy Drew type sleuth than a therapist. You wonder how much of her life is invested in this particular client. The authors do include bits of her other clients so you know she is working on multiple projects but it does seem odd with how investigative she seems to be about the Bishops.
I also agree with other reviewers that the characters aren’t super likable.
It’s not an amazing book, but it’s not terrible either.
I’m not sure if this and An Anonymous Girl are enough to keep me reading these authors. It seems like most of their books are domestic suspense that revolve around some sort of marriage dysfunction.
Too much of the same thing for me. But if that storyline intrigues you, I would guess you would enjoy their other books.
Sidenote: A language content disclaimer— there are quite a few f-words in this book.
**Received an ARC via NetGalley**
Loved this book! Well written, well-paced and with lots of surprises. I'm a fan of a good mystery and this one delivered.
The Golden Couple is the kind of book that you can't put down. The story follows two threads: that of Avery Chambers, a renegade therapist, and her client Marissa Bishop whose secrets are landing her marriage into hot water.
Each voice in the book is engaging and easy to follow. The authors do a fantastic job of twisting the two narratives together to create a solid adventure.
Readers who enjoy psychological thrillers are sure to love this book.
4.5 Stars
There is a lot going on in this book and I liked it. It made for a lot of red herrings and never knowing who to trust. The gist of it is Marissa and Matthew start marriage counseling with disgraced therapist Avery. Marissa reveals she had an affair and there starts the ten step process Avery sets the couple on. Avery is also a whistleblower and called the FDA on a pharmaceutical company a client worked for, they know it was she and they are after her to name the client who told her.
The story is told from the point of view of both Avery and Marissa. Neither of these women were particularly likeable but I liked reading about them. There were many twists in the book and the writing and plot were riveting. I could not put this book down and read it in a day. I would have given this five Stars but the ending was a bit convoluted in my humble opinion.
This is the fourth book by this incredible writing duo and I have read and loved every single one. There are always many surprises in their novels and they never disappoint. I highly recommend this one and all their others as well.
Thank you NetGalley, the publisher, and the authors for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
Avery is a therapist and counselor gone rogue. She has lost her license due to some unprofessional practices. She now works out of her home using her own philosophy of ten steps to counseling. She practices more like a private investigator than a therapist.
One night the perfect couple come in for an appointment. They appear to be a ‘golden couple’, good looking, successful, the perfect life. As things start to unravel, Avery sees that they are not being honest and their relationship is much more complicated than it first seems. A ‘one night stand’ case of infidelity is pretty twisted.
You will appreciate the twists and turns this novel takes. Characters are not always who or what they first seem to be. Guaranteed, you will want to keep reading till the end to discover the truth.
I love a good domestic thriller and The Golden Couple most certainly satisfies. Although at the beginning of the narrative, I was wondering where the "thriller" aspect came in and wow, did it ever at the very last quarter of the novel. Character development was spot on and so was the pacing. Overall, I am so glad that I had the opportunity to read this novel.
Thank you to Sarah Pekkanen, Greer Hendricks, St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for the ARC!
I rate this book 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. This was my first book by this author duo and I enjoyed it! The concept was unique and entertaining and kept me wanting to keep reading. I really liked Avery as a character too. Her therapist/private detective persona was fun and I liked that she was able to uncover some of the mystery’s surrounding Matthew and Marissa’s relationship.
I did find this book a bit easy to guess. I also found that some of the pieces that made up the ending and contributed to the climax seemed a bit ridiculous that they would have happened. However, it was still a good book and I am happy to have had the opportunity to read this one!
I would recommend this book to people who like family thrillers, just be aware that it can be a bit far fetched so as long as you enjoy it for what it is and nothing more, then you will like this book!
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this novel. I loved it! It isn’t really anything groundbreaking in the domestic thriller genre, but it’s well-paced, well-written and the plot is well-developed. It would make a great beach read.
This novel centers around the titular “Golden Couple” who begin therapy due to an infidelity. But as Avery, their therapist, begins to work with them, it becomes clear that the infidelity is the least of their worries. Stalking, obsession, & a decades-old murder all play a part as the story moves towards an ending I definitely didn’t predict.
Thank you St Martin’s Press for an ARC of this title.
Greer and Sarah have done it again! After reading their three pervious titles I wouldn’t expect anything less.
The Golden Couple tells the story of Marissa and Matthew Bishop a picture perfect couple from the outside. When Marissa clears she calls on Avery Chambers, a therapist with an interesting take on how to “fix” relationships. She guarantees to fix you in 10 sessions (but lost her license due to controversial methods)
As Avery follows the Bishops she realizes things just aren’t adding up. There are so many awesome surprises in this book I don’t want to give away spoilers!
I will say that every time a Hendricks / Pakkanen title comes out I will be the first one in line to buy it!
Looking forward to having so many discussions about this when it hits shelves in March 2022!,
This is the third book I've read by this writing duo, and I always wonder which author writes which character's point of view or if they both collaborate on both sides of the story or only focus on one. It's interesting to see how they weave the stories together throughout the story line and then merge them together to tie everything up. I was a bit disappointed by the ending because it seemed a bit abrupt to me on the solution with no hints at all that I could pick up on in hindsight. I'm not saying I wanted to solve it before everything was revealed, that ruins a book, ha ha, but a few subtle hints Agatha Christie-style would have made it more believable for me. However, all the details were wrapped up and explained by the end of the book. The characters are well developed. There are a few story lines that either merge together or stand on their own but are all explained with resolution and no open endings left dangling. This is a thriller. It's not gory. There's not a lot of strong language. There is mention of a murder in the characters' past but no heavy, gory details, but the circumstances might be triggering for some readers. This is another very well-done and entertaining read by this female writing team.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Saint Martin’s Press for the advanced reading copy of The Golden Couple by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen.
Greer Hendricks and Sara Pekkanen wrote the thriller The Wife Between Us in 2018 that I absolutely loved. Then in 2019 they wrote An Anonymous Girl which was mediocre. Last year they wrote You Are Not Alone which was middle of the road for me. I am hopeful this will be a a quick and enjoyable read. There is something about this duos writing styles that makes it so easy to read. I will definitely read continue to read more of their work in the future.
I went into this book not knowing anything (how I personally like to go into thrillers), which I’m glad I did.
Without giving away too much. This novel has a similar writing style to their previous works. This is a psychological thriller with multiple points of view.
Avery Chambers an unconventional and highly controversial counsellor, and former therapist who lost her practice and license. Avery only takes on clients for ten sessions.
Then there is Marissa, a wife, mother, and boutique shop owner who wants to fix her seemingly perfect marriage.
Avery, Marissa, and Marissa’s husband Matthew all have their share of secrets that are about to come to the surface.
I highly recommend this novel to readers who like unreliable narrators. If you liked this book it is worth looking into their previous novels.
Avery Chambers is a therapist with a unique strategy for "fixing" her patients problems. Despite losing her license, due to her controversial methods, her success rate is phenomenal but she won't take you on if she isn't certain she can fix you with her ten-step program. Marissa and Mathew Bishop, on the surface, appear to be the "Golden Couple" but Marissa confesses her infidelity in hopes that Avery can save her marriage but the biggest secrets are yet to be revealed...a dangerous web of deceits.
The Golden Couple is a fantastic new thriller/mystery novel that you won’t want to put down. Professional magicians are masters of misdirection, and like them, the dynamic duo that composes Greer Hendricks are skilled at leading your mind in a wild goose chase of whodunit. Just when you think you have everything figured out they will have you questioning everything you just pieced together. There is sure to be at least a few surprises for readers when they reach the last thrilling page. Avery is an unconventional therapist who methods have resulted in her losing her license. The death of her terminally ill husband leaves an emptiness she is trying to fill while she is learning to navigate her new life. Mathew's holds a high-power position at his company leaving Marissa to run a high end boutique while simultaneously raising their 8-year-old son. Marissa seeks Avery's help to save her marriage after she admits to an infidelity but someone doesn't want the couple staying together. The only way Avery will be able to help is if they choose to reveal all of their secrets...but even she won’t be prepared for what she discovers...A must read for 2022!
