'The Golden Couple' by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a complementary digital ARC for my honest review.
I found it started out slow but it picked up quickly, throwing in some twists along the way. I found it very suspenseful and was surprised by the 'guilty party'.
The tension kept building to keep you guessing until the very end in this psychological thriller.

I enjoyed this book very much! I have recommended this book to many friends and they have enjoyed it too.
Absolutely loved this book and it has been a big hit at the library this summer. Will continue to recommend it to our patrons.
another light read by this duo - and this page turner doesn't disappoint. It's a great summer read, recommend to beach goers!
Matthew and Marissa Bishop are the golden couple, until Marissa cheats on Matthew. They go a therapist, Avery, to help them. However, strange things keep happening and Avery keeps tabs on them to discover what they are hiding.
Matthew and Marissa's friendship began years ago when Matthew's family bought a summer house in a small Eastern Shore town where Marissa lived. Matthew, Marissa, Skip, Tina, and other locals would get together for bonfires on the beach. Then Tina died and everything changed.
There is a lot of misdirection happening, along with unreliable characters hiding things. I think you will be surprised by this well written thriller!
I loved this book! There were so many characters with secrets and things to hide that I didn't know who to trust and it kept me guessing until the very end. I love the other collaborations of these authors, and this book did not disappoint. Thank you to Net Galley for the chance to read this!
I wasn’t too impressed by the latest from this duo. The pacing was good, save for a few slow moments towards the middle. My biggest issue with this story is that it tried to do too much. I found it hard to follow at times, especially with Avery’s side plot. I wasn’t compelled by the motives of any of the characters. Overall I am a bit disappointed!
Oh HELLS YES! Reading this was such a thrill!
This is the second book that I've read by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen and I liked it SIGNIFICANTLY more than The Wife Between Us. There's just so much to love. The drama, the secrets, the lies. Not to mention the gritty female lead Avery was an instant favourite. I will also note that there's something excellent about reading a psychological thriller from the point of view of an actual therapist.
Absolutely love LOVED this one and would definitely recommend it to any Mystery/Thriller nuts like me out there.
The Golden Couple is yet another fantastic collaboration between Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. There is a gravitas to it that prevents it from being an unbelievable story. Plus, I stayed engaged throughout the entire plot and could not figure out what was going to happen at any point in time. Everything about The Golden Couple is interesting, and I cannot wait to see what Ms. Hendricks and Ms. Pekkanen have for us next!
Read Completed 6/29/22 | A solid 4 star read for me. THE GOLDEN COUPLE was a solid book from start to finish but it never quite had my jaw dropping. There were some really nice twists and the authors made sure everything came full circle, so the ending was satisfying and everything was well-explained. I think I could have used some of that explanation or maybe even just a couple more clues more towards the middle of the book to keep some of the intrigue up and give us some more tiny twists before the big reveals at the end. I really liked the split POV between Marissa and Avery. They each had a unique perspective to offer and switching back and forth let the right clues come out at the right time. Not my favorite book from this duo but still incredibly solid and definitely not my least favorite!
An amazing domestic thriller. Full of suspense. A whirlwind! The Golden Couple’s marriage is filled with infidelity and more. Marissa and Matthew Bishop seek the help in fixing their marriage from an unlicensed therapist. A therapist with methods that are anything but usual.. Avery Chambers’s has a 10-Step Program -- Confession, Disruption, Escalation, Revelation, Devastation, Confrontation, Exposure, The Test, Reconciliation, and Promises. She stalks those she treats. She has a past that is haunting in ways nobody could imagine. Told from two points of view, Avery and Marissa. Not going in to much because I do not like reviewing with spoilers. But this book definitely packs a punch! I just love these two authors and all of their previous books. I highly recommend all of their books! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the advance ecopy.
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen have done it again! The story has a duel narrative with a non-traditional therapist, Avery, and her patient, Marissa. Marissa and Matthew may seem like the perfect couple, but Marissa has been keeping a secret. Avery has ten sessions to fix the couple's relationship, but she also has some threatening circumstances to deal with. I loved reading about such strong female characters and couldn't wait to see how their lives would end up.
I really enjoyed this book. There were a lot of twists and turns, and a few things that I wasn’t expecting. Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen together are such a powerhouse writing team, and I always look forward to their new releases. Thank you so much @NetGalley for the ARC!
Okay this was so intriguing to me! I love a thriller involving a therapist, because I feel like you really get into the minds of the characters, and this was no exception. The characters were all very well written, and the plot twist absolutely got me. Loved!
Trusting the advice of many reader friends, I went with the audio version - a wise choice lately for my trips down thriller lane. I rarely really love a thriller but I always want to know the big twist, the buzzy plot…and I’m finding if the narration is good it’s much more entertaining to listen. And what do you know, my favorite Marin Ireland is the voice of one of the two female main characters, Avery…the therapist helping out the ‘golden couple’, Marissa & Matthew.
I’ve read all of this duo’s thrillers and consistently they’re pretty solid. That says a lot coming from this non-thriller fan. There was enough going on to keep me guessing until the very end and it was enjoyable listening to the two narrators. Forgettable, yes, but enjoyable in the moment!
3.5 stars
The dream team of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are at it again and I ended up devouring their newest book, The Golden Couple, in a day.
This twisty tale goes back and forth between two POVs. Marissa, who along with her husband Matthew, start seeing a therapist to work on their marriage after Marissa has an affair.
The second POV is Avery, their therapist who lost her professional license because of her unorthodox 10 step process to counseling.
This was one of those stories that I couldn’t stop turning the pages as I became so invested in the characters. And that twisty ending! Yikes! This is why these authors have become some of my favorites in the genre of psychological thrillers.
*Thank you so much to St. Martin’s Press and to NetGalley for the advance copy!*
Thank you Netgalley, St. Martin’s Press and Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen for free e-ARC in return of my honest review.
The synopsis got me intrigued - family drama and infidelity, the therapist who lost her license due to her unorthodox methods, the secrets that must be unrevealed and all of he parties are affected.
True to its word the thriller is fast-paced and gripping, it is hard to stop as basically every chapter has a cliffhanger which prompts the reader to read on and on long into the night. The plot wise The Golden Couple is a great throwing many twists, as reader I could not guess who is the main villain there and what it’s his/her goal. Character-wise the novel is good as well, everything reader can expect from the thriller. At first I enjoyed Avery’s chapters more, however, she got quite repetitive at times and I turned my attention to Marissa’s chapters. At the end, I did not see it coming at all, it came a bit surprising and quite exciting.
As usual, Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen did not disappoint and I am looking forward to more work from both of them.
A picture perfect couple seek counseling to help their marriage. The therapist is unconventional, but the couple are willing to try it to save their marriage.
Told using the alternating points of view of Marissa, the client, and Avery, the therapist. Marissa cheated on her husband, but wants to save her marriage. She finds Avery, a therapist who guarantees she can fix issues in only ten sessions. Of course, nothing is as it appears.
The Golden Couple is a gripping and twisty psychological thriller. Fans of Hendricks and Pekkanen’s other books are sure to enjoy this one too.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
When I first started this book- I hated Avery. She annoyed me with her out of the box methods. As I read on, the more she grew on me. Through each delectable twist in this story I liked the characters even more.
Giving this one a solid 4.5/5 stars - I was hooked from the beginning and the twists had me shook to the core! Highly recommend this one for thriller lovers.
